  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Glad the Bears didn’t get Matt Judon from the Patriots. He’s 32, but has been a force for years, and added to their front, would be a real problem for us. Pairing him with Montez Sweat? Would have been a real tough go for our offensive line.

Don’t be dishonest with this. Cousins wanted to stay, and offered a team friendly deal, which KAM rejected. This was never about the money, it was about guaranteed years, and a no trade clause. KAM would have none of that, and Cousins needed to find employment elsewhere.

Kind of ‘six of one half dozen of the other’ argument.

If KC offered to sign for small money ala Hitman KAM probably would have resigned him.
Money was an element of the decision, no doubt. Guarantee and NTC were also involved in the calculation.

It was not all one thing or another.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  SoCalMinnFan

In this particular discussion, DE misrepresents reality by highlighting it was only about money, and what Cousins “demanded”. He didn’t demand anything. He offered his services at a below market deal. KAM said he wanted “flexibility”. Never once did KAM say it was about money. They offered Cousins $38M a year, but only guaranteed him through 2024, and of course, no NTC. Thus, I see this issue exactly as I stated, and nothing more.

Yes, they offered him $38M without the guarantees and NTC.
What would they have offered him with those? $25M?? I have no way of knowing.
Obviously less than KC was willing to take as he knew he could (and in fact did) find all he wanted elsewhere.

Discussions go off the rails when the ‘absolutes’ come up. ‘All about the money’ or ‘All about the guarantees and NTC, security’.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  SoCalMinnFan
14 August 2024 3:24 pm

Hypotheticals do no work in this discussion. Cousins and KAM both highlighted it wasn’t about the money, but DE insists it was. Cousins wanted to stay with the Vikings. That desire could only be achieved with guaranteed years and a NTC. That was why Cousins departed the station. Why won’t people just admit that?

SoCalMinnFan

We don’t have all of the info so we have to fill in with hypotheticals.

Was money AN element of the discussion, yes, was security (NTC and grantees) AN element, yes. What percentage did each play? No idea.

Did KOC and KC agree about the $$ but not the security, sure. Would they have agreed about the security if there had been less $$ at risk, I believe so.

But you all can return to your regularly scheduled argument.

The price was never an issue. Ever. Stop propagating a lie. So ridiculous you say this. Clearly the sticking point was NOT money. It was guaranteed years, and the NTC. Stop pushing a false narrative. KAM wanted to keep stringing Cousins along on one year deals, and Cousins wanted to retire a Viking. The two agendas did not mesh. That is why Cousins moved on. He was committed to the Vikings, but the Vikings were not committed to him.

One of our inmates were given a wheel chair and the Admin let him come back to his cell.
When the Housing Unit staff said something we were told (by Admin) that ‘it will be ok for a few days’.

See, sometimes it is hard for me to read sarcasm into the comments. I personally wasn’t expecting JJ to start this season, unless we were so far out of contention for a WC spot that it would make sense to give him on field experience. Otherwise I was just hoping we would see him get reps late in games, etc…so I don’t see that the QB situation has changed much. Now if Darnold develops glass knee-itis game 3 that could change quickly.

Maybe some of you felt differently?

Don’t get me wrong, it is still a terrible outcome as he can’t take reps in practice, can’t take otherwise meaningless reps in games, can’t be the backup. Gonna suck seeing him in sweats and a hoodie on the sideline all season.

I wouldn’t be that surprised if they brought in somebody after going through Hall/Mullens/Dobbs last year. It’s a long season and Darnold doesn’t have a great track record. I don’t think they’ll be paying big for a starter or anything so there was sarcasm on that a little, but if one becomes available, I could see them trying to upgrade the backup position.

The QB intrigue now becomes who will the Vikings sign as the starter for 2025? Will Darnold do well enough to earn a contract? Will, as DE states, we be looking at a Tannehill when Darnold crashes and burns?

Even if he is just back to where he was Saturday that will be enough. And he could be better with a year of study and he should be good for training camp next year.

Agree to disagree. If that is the case, Vikings won’t need to put big money into the QB position (Mullens for another 2 year/$4 million?). That would be a precarious position for KOC and KAM to place themselves in.

He will definitely be more advanced next year, if he applies himself, and I’m absolutely certain he will. Everything will be easier on him in his second year. He’ll have a year of studying the position up close, under his belt. He’s gonna see what works, and what doesn’t work, in the NFL.

How can Darnold’s odds of winning the Come Back Player Of The Year improve if he is not eligible since you have to be coming off an injury as we have been told here a time or three. (quite the run on sentence there)

Correct.
Anybody betting on Darnold hasn’t read the updated AP rules.

The spirit of the AP Comeback Player of the Year award is to honor a player who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season. The decision to provide this guidance was made last December but could not be implemented for the 2023 awards because the season was almost completed.

I was wondering if that would come up. Dick Vermeil’s famous comment “We’ll rally around Kurt Warner, and we’ll play good football” will live on forever. Obviously they won the Super Bowl that year.

Obviously an exception, but our likely backup QB going down, while extremely disappointing does not necessarily mean doom. JJ will come back as good as ever and he still has a 20 year career in front of him.

Laughing. Pocket passers last in the NFL. IF McCarthy becomes more pure pocket passer, and less scrambling playmaker, he could last 15 years. Might get beyond that, but not likely.

Years, more than age. The abuse on his body will add up. We all know this. What will his body look like after 15 years in the NFL? Again, pocket passers tend to last longer than guys like Cam Newton for instance.

Yall, we dont know the extent of our lord and savior JJs injury yet, and only the Dr who open his knee up and does the surgery will give us an accurate time table and return to football activites. Wait and see mode, not wild guess and speculate mode. This rebuild season is still going to be fun and have ups and downs and im STILL jacked to go see them beat Tennessee.

But I have zero hope this year or 2025.

I mean, JJ plays 2 quarters in a practice game and gets hurt.

Dooming and Glooming and Cheering and Watching are not mutually exclusive as we ‘Hope for the best but expect the worst’.

I notice the kickers foot never goes about the kickees knee. I assume there is a brace or something there that doesn’t allow it any further.

That would also help keep the kickee from flinching as the kick is on the way.

Unless I did more extensive reading, I could not answer that question with 100% confidence, but I’m going to say no…the menisci are these kinda fleshy flaps that cushion the femoral and tibial condyles and if you cut out a wedge you can’t just go back in and graft in some artificial or cadaver meniscus (in my nonexpert opinion).

QOTD. I’ve heard for decades at the NFL level the game is 90% mental and 10% physical. Regardless of amount of time out, JJ can use the time to really bone up on the mental aspects of the game – every meeting, every practice, soak it up.
Without reps, the physical side will be behind, like game speed, but can be quickly picked up with reps when appropriate.

KFEY93

Agreed. Its also the reason why a lot of QBs cant get over the hump in the play offs, mentally fold under pressure, getting hit, making mistakes and they get in their own heads. I dont see that mental weakness in JJ so far, its refreshing. Hoping he comes back ready to go and sling it.

JR, there is so much to learn at the NFL level for QB’s. Both the offensive schemes they will run, and the defensive schemes they will face, are a quantum leap from what they experienced in college. Yes, rookies come in and they compensate initially in their careers with exceptional athleticism, but if they are going to last, and be long term franchise QB’s, it’s what’s between their ears that counts. Understanding it all, and mastering it all, takes a while. McCarthy can sit with the OC and take in the scheming and planning for games, and see how it works. All NFL QB’s have to be drilled endlessly on the four progression and read categories, and understand the nuances and adjustments that are made for every single opponent. It takes a lot of work and studying to get those many hundreds of read adjustments into your head.

I was a semi Texans fan when they started as well and have family down there so if the Vikings aren’t going to be successful then I’ll pull for the Texans. That’s probably going to only last the first couple weeks and then JJ will be back and lead them from the depths to a wild card spot.

I could create auto populating macros that say for example “The subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor tendons are intact, with tendinopathy or partial tear.” However, personally I find that by having to say each noun I actually study each tendon.

He’ll still be learning. It was most likely going to be Darnold’s job for most of the year anyway. Hopefully he’ll miss just a few quarters of preseason football. No big deal.

He’s young, it’s not a super major injury either way, he’s driven. He’ll be alright. The sucky part is the lack of excitement for a young QB this year (if he misses major time).

But I don’t think JJ plays another down in 2024.
