I liked one of my coaches philosophies, having fun is important, but isn’t it more fun to win?
Absolutely, they have to enjoy getting better at playing. It’s way more fun to play when you play good.
Playing baseball is probably the most enjoyable thing I’ve ever done (not including family stuff and such). I LOVED playing ball.
Fishing is right up there, but man, I loved playing baseball.
I was coaching 12 year olds in a tourney in Minnesota one year. They had 10 players and were batting all 10 – you could bat one extra. I like that approach in non-important tournaments. One of the their players got hurt and had to leave the game. According to tournament rules he should have been called out next time his spot came up. I told the director to wave the rule….let the kids play and have fun. Winning a mid-season tournament isn’t the most important thing…the other coach was surprised and pleased.

Pistol Pete Maravich was my idol. Wanted to emulate him from the earliest days on a basketball court. Unfortunately there was this little thing called talent that prevented me from fully realizing my dream. That said I could dribble a ball, pass it no look to a forward, pass behind my back and even shoot a ball while doing a full 360 in the air. In the end, though I liked football the best. I tried out for my High School football team as a wide receiver, but eventually the coach noticed that I threw the ball better and was smarter than the QB. So I did that.
We are both old enuf to remember him. Something else.

Laughing… I got pulled from a game for throwing a pass behind my back to the TE for a first down. Coach was mad at me for showing off. I was getting rushed hard and I instinctively threw the ball behind my back like a basketball pass I had done most of my life. He sat me the rest of the game. We lost.
Dumb coach, thats quick thinking and improvising. He was stuck in his ways. Dont make the same mistake 😉
Yeah… I didn’t think at all. I had thrown balls behind my back in basketball forever, and often threw outs behind my back to the receivers in practice just goofing off. It was just an instinctive move really.
Well, the best thing you did was throw it to the TE, they are the best athletes on the field….smartest, coolest, and best looking too.

Our TE was tall but skinny. His best play was when I lobbed it up in the end zone and just caught it way above the defensive guy.
I as 6’4, 230, and ran like a tackle…..but I could catch…
For the record, I have always felt good TE’s were hard to come by. Some can catch, some can block, some can get into open space quickly where a QB can get the ball to them. Some could run. Put that all together into one guy though.

It’s also possible they draft a QB who leads them to multiple SBs. They need to take a shot. If nothing else to have a succession plan when Kirk retires or old man time inevitably catches up with him.

Preparing for the future while you have Kirk around is not rational? I never said they need to dump him, but why not have a succession plan in place in case he retires or declines due to age? Cousins plays long enough that you trade him like the Patriots did with Jimmy G and until then you have a solid backup? Wow, you’re right, when I write it out that does sound like a horrible idea. Rolling with Mullens as the backup is a much better idea should Kirk get injured or decide to hang em up.
Certainly that is rational. Unfortunately I think Cousins will move on as a free agent next year so whatever transition plan the Vikings have, it’s in-place now.
Then that’s stupid. If they don’t have a legitimate plan then he should have just been re-signed. There’s no reason they couldn’t have extended him and got a young guy. The 2 are not mutually exclusive. As I’ve said before, instead of Mullens I’d trade for Z. Wilson too. He might end up a turd as well but he’s young and had the talent to be highly drafted so maybe he can learn from Cousins. Worst case again is he does learn and improve and you have trade bait in a couple of years or he doesn’t improve and you’re out a 6th or 7th round future draft pick. I just can’t see New Jersey keeping him or him wanting to be there.

I just provide data, while you just say things like you did above. Data shows that Cousins plays consistently well against other teams, regardless of their record every year as a starter. he has bad games and that is a norm for QB’s. I read an article that analyzed Cousins play in “big games” and the author was shocked in watching those games that indeed Cousins played well but the rest of the team did not for the most part. He was very fair in his analysis though. Went through game by game and stated whether Cousins played poorly, average, or above average. In the end, out of the 15 games he reviewed Cousins played poorly in three. This is the data I look at, rather than listen to someone say “He’s great in meaningless regular season games against scrub Defenses.” That is disproven by the data.

18/25 turnovers on defense happened week 10 or earlier… and th bye week was week 7.
That’s right, the turnovers did shut down at a certain point. Turnovers were the only thing making the defense somewhat useful in the first half of the year.

My theory is that our inability to generate pressure was the main reason for the drop-off in turnovers.
Z Smith got hurt, D Tomlinson spent time out, our defensive pressure was more and more nonexistent into the second half of the year. QBs could just stand back there & wait for someone to get open. Made our DBs look much worse than they were.

Offensive coordinators said fuck it will just throw to the open guy five yards down the field, and he will still get 20 yards.
4/6 times the vikings gave up 30+ points they lost Buffalo and Indy were the only wins….
They lost only once, to the Eagles, when giving up less than 30.
Maybe thats a something they should look into.
Might it depend upon who you play? Don’t know who exactly is the 32nd defense, but you have a better chances against them than the 49ers if you give up 30 points.

Someone will get 1 x1, but depends on who you play. Dallas will still pass rush like hell and play tackle the RB on the way to QB. The game will be can someone get open quick enough for a quick throw and hurt them some.
The OL having some consistency year to year for the first time in a long time is a reason for hope.
Maybe the continuity will be the reason for improvement all around.

Yep. I expect them to shift from a zone scheme type running to downhill style running. Cook not good at that and matty a little better at it. Given that move and the Oliver signing expect the old school Zim type running again

Saturday I took the hard cover off the pickup bed, then decided to put it back on since it was pouring in Dickinson. Went to Dickinson, vanity wouldn’t fit so I took the cover off. Loaded the vanity. Got home, unloaded the vanity and put the cover back on.
Sunday, I did some planting, dug up a bunch of dirt, hauled a couple of those big bags of soil, took the sandbags out of the smoker (keep it from rolling away in the wind) and smoked some stuff for Mother’s Day. Loaded a couple of 50 pound bags of dog food from TSC.
Sunday night my back reminded me I’m almost 54.
