Question of the Day

Someone asked about favorite or best vocalists of all time yesterday. The GOAT is Aretha hands down, as far as male, its Freddy Mercury. This is fact and not up for discussion, though you could consider Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Al Green, Karen Carpenter in the next tier. As far as my personal favorite, I can’t pick one, but my top five favorites are Barry White, Paul Westerberg, Bradley Nowell, Mike Ness, and Randy Travis. I’ll post the media selection of my favorite song of each for the rest of the week starting with who passed the earliest. Who is/are your favorite vocalists all time?

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Curse of Oak Island is on tonight. They are now three episodes beyond the projected 20 they had scheduled for the season. In addition, there doesn’t seem to be any other shows scheduled, but there’s no “finale” for the season. Weird. I’m thinking this week is a discovery, maybe followed by a big finish next week of some sort. This season has been pretty slow so far. Not sure if they have actually gotten to something, or just running out of things to show.

At least the Twins made a game of it and ‘only’ lost 11-3.
They did manage more hits than strikeouts today by a grand total of 7-6.

Derek Carr thinks the Vikings need not necessarily draft a passer in nine days. Instead he seems to think Sam Darnold is the quarterback of the future for the Vikings.

Now that’s a bold take. Career 59% completion rate, and 63 TD’s to 56 interceptions. I guess there’s a chance…

Back on the course for the first time since November. 86. Not terrible.
Dude I was paired up with shot a hole in one.
Never seen one before. 138 yard wedge with a slight draw. Bounced once to the left and rolled in. Mine was up hill and rolled down a ridge and never saw it.

Hope you all behaved today!

Another Tuesday Kirk discussion? Oh well….

I’m not for selling the farm to draft a QB, but, we have two first round draft picks, if a good one is available, go get him.

We simply could not afford to keep Cousins around, with his required guarantees and cost. He will be missed, but he is gone. So, it is time to jump into the pool draft a QB.

Not sure why that discussion has to become so adversarial? Everyone is making good points. Let’s all have a beer and watch them draft a QB.

My first year of college (dumb ass 17 year old) I drank far too much beer, sickening to remember how much beer my friends and I would drink at RATT (room at the top) on the top floor of the SU building. Four of us would put away 10-12 pitchers of beer. Wonder why my grades slipped? My second year one of my best friends and I were talking and decided to see if we could still enjoy ourselves without drinking (funny because at 18 I was now legal to drink). Side benefit was I actually started having good conversations with the opposite sex and started to come out of my shell (don’t get me wrong I was still a nerd and shy af). As a DD I got to drive lots of different cars (I could neither afford to own a car nor the hefty insurance for a teenage boy in Alberta); some of the girls in my lab tech program had very nice cars.

My wife, haha, said that when we met I tamed her down. She wasn’t crazy wild but did have a few at the coed softball game, Thirsty Thursdays, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy a craft brew or two once every couple of weeks in the summer but a lifetime of seeing the sequela of alcohol abuse has turned me off any ideas of binge drinking.

I get it. My mother was and my father is a high functioning alcoholic. Great people. Successful. But both alcoholics. They were never violent but occasionally volatile. First time I drove my father home from the bar I was 12.

It’s the reason I gravitated toward marijuana as opposed to alcohol. I do occasionally enjoy a beer or two in the summer but always in moderation as I’m type 2 and alcohol doesn’t help at all.

With my oldest granddaughter graduating HS this year I’ve been reminiscing about her mother (my stepdaughter) leaving home for college and contrasting with my own experience. My stepd called after three weeks and begged to be allowed to drop out and come home. We told her she had to stay until the end of semester and she ended up clear sailing. I think her daughter is going to have an even harder time – she has a really good life and is very well taken care of, although she acts like she has a tough life.

My parents definitely helped me with room and board expenses in college.

My post grad experience was sorta like yours (only you were in hs). There was zero option to return home, in my case, after college. I was too tight to pay another month’s rent out of my savings, as I was hoping to buy a car. Of course, that is why I emigrated to the US for a job rather than waiting a month for a job that was going to open up in Cold Lake, Alberta. And that, that has made all the difference.

Seems to always happen. Few good days, then boom.
For sure Cousins got too expensive and we need to draft a QB.
Seems question is what to pay, if at all, to get one.
Other than Williams at number one, there’s a lot of differing opinions on these guys. Is it worth giving up picks to move up to take one that might well be no better than what you get standing pat.
It’s not easy and all thoughts have merit

My feelings are that if the right QB is there at 11 we pick him. If we use 11 and 23 to move up and pick a guy (with the team we are trading with knowing we are moving up for a QB ie fleece ready) it is a long long way until the 4th round.

People here who think it’s impossible to do a contract for an NFL player in an hour, don’t know the process. All a team needs to do is provide an offer sheet, and the players agent can “agree in principle” to the terms. Then the contract is actually printed up.

An offer sheet can be as simple as detailing a four-year, $180 million contract with a $50 million signing bonus, and $90 million guaranteed over the next two seasons with an additional $10 million guaranteed in 2026. Probably highlight a no trade clause as well.

That’s it. The rest can be hacked out between the agent and the team, but even that can be done in a matter of an hour or two.

Teams and agents do this like you drive your car.

No one said it was impossible.

I said it was not likely given that there was no previous contact about it, it had to be a three way negotiation between Team and Agent then agent and player and then back again. And it all had to be completed in a little over an hour so that they team could announce the agreement and the terms, which they did.

Given the size, price and details, I find it outside of ‘probable’.

I’m sorry if I come across as toxic. I am assertive, yes, but I don’t think I have ever insulted you SoCal.

The Falcons knew early on that they wanted Cousins if he didn’t re-sign with the Vikings. All they had to do was wait and see what the Vikings offered. Once the low-ball contract numbers came out, and Cousins said “no thanks, I’ll test free agency”, the Falcons just filled in the blanks. This not rocket surgery. It was child’s play as I said.

I was not insulted but I understand that some of the tone from the other conversation might have slipped in a bit. Thought it was more of a distraction. I am not so sensitive that I am upset.

I could be wrong, I have been in the past like with Wilson’s Pittsburg contract. I felt that there was no way he would sign just for the one year/vet minimum.

Time will tell about the tampering. I believe it is possible (probable?) that there was but that did not mean that Vikings would see any benefit or that the league would even admit that there was. That does not diminish those that feel otherwise.

Just so you know, over the last 15 years, there have been 46 QB’s taken in the first round of the draft. Of those, only 7 would be considered “home runs” and another 3 would be considered “solid” starters. So, 10 out of 46 would be the tally. That’s a “hit” rate of 21.7%. Bet your life on a 21.7% probability rate? Not prudent.

See how quickly this fell into the #8 rat hole bullshit – to bad.
Have read here countless time goal is winning a SB!!! OK.
So was looking back at recent SB winners
Pats – Brady (late pick)
Eagles- Foles (a backup at time)
KC -Mahomes( first rounder)
Bucs – Brady (FA)
Rams – Stafford (FA)
KC – Mahomes (First)
KC – Mahomes (First)
Seems other than KC and Mahomes everyone else did it by getting their QB other than a first rounder.
And if the goal is truly a SB, there’s several ways to get there.

Stafford was traded for.

But the point being discussed is what option gives you the best chance of success. NLNVF said 1st Rd is a poor one due to low %.
FA percentage and lower Rd QBs are less I suspect, even trades are not good. Although you can find examples of each if you want to find them.

FA is a good choice, if you have years of solid performance data. Stafford was a strong QB on a bad team. His production was high for years. Easy choice. Take the QB that produces every year, if you can swing it. The draft is a crap shoot. You just don’t know which guys are going to cut it, and which won’t. Vets are proven (good or bad).

I agree that a ‘proven QB trade’ is less of a crapshoot.
But for every Stafford trade there is multiple Wilson trade that comes up negative.
So we can trade ‘examples’ all day or we can agree that getting a QB is a crapshoot but 1st round by not be a good way but it may very well be the best way percentage wise.

I think Wilson was clearly a bad trade… stupid, in fact. Wilson was successful on a team with a great defense, and a powerful running attack. He doesn’t really process, as much as he creates. Anyone who knows anything about QB play could see Wilson is an athletic talent, not a superior QB.

Brady was a FA and Foles was a backup. And to begin with Brady was a late rounder.
According to those SB winners, only Kc has done it with a first rounder.
And I buy you have a better chance of getting a better prospect with a first rounder than a later pick. But this data suggests you don’t have to go that route to put together a SB winner. And seven years in a row is hardly outliers.

Sorry, my minds been clouded by your endless and insane #8 defenses and whataboutisms for almost 2 years now so, its a little fuzzy. Please, remind myself and our fellow posters. Does it involve drafting a QB later where the “success rate” is even lower? You know there’s factors other then WHEN a qb is drafted that affect if they turn out and are good enough to win a SB. Its what team they go to, the coaching staff, and the weapons they already have in place. All of those things matter. And the Vikings have a lot if not all of those. If you dont see how drafting a rookie QB now is an utmost MUST, I have no words for how out of touch you are with the modern game of NFL football.

Rules are that the team can only talk to the players agent, trainers/players are ok.

Punishment by the NFL is fines and taking draft picks but there have been incidents of teams ‘settling the dispute’ by swapping picks and then the NFL ok that agreement.

Talking to players, trainers, etc. is not tampering. Tampering is telling a player or his agent what a team is prepared to offer in a contract before the “legal tampering” date.

For the under-informed here… the Vikings publicly advised they weren’t interested in guaranteeing Cousins anything beyond 2024, and also said they offered him $76M. Falcons knew what Cousins wanted… guarantees he was going to be on the team past 2024, especially with a no trade clause. They knew exactly what they needed to offer Cousins on Sunday, when he said he would be entering free agency instead of taking the Vikings low ball offer.

This is just a lot of crap the media is stirring up to garner clicks.

Head of PR is not players/trainers.
Multiyear contracts do not come together in just over and hour.

Shenanigans? Yes.
The NFL may ‘decide’ that it didn’t raise to the level of ‘tampering’. Much like DOJ decided Hillary’s and Joe’s classified document handling didn’t rise to the level of charging them.

Not sure what you’re arguing. Some players (like Lamar Jackson) don’t have an agent. The bottom line here is tampering. Tampering is discussing contract terms before the “legal tampering period” begins. Talking to a trainer, or other players, does not constitute tampering. This is a whole lot of baloney.

So Lamar was/is his agent.

By admitting in his press conference that he talked to more team staff than other players and trainers he already admitted to tampering taking place.

Who else he talked to is part of the investigation.

CB is listed as one of our Needs and this draft is kind of top heavy at the position with 4 rated in the Top 30.

DeJean, S, Iowa can play CB in fact he is listed as such on some Mock sites. He is rated in mid 20s and gives Coach Flores more of that Positional Flexibility that he craves.

I have circled back around to him as a possibility at 23 if a QB falls to us at 11. I think good DTs are available later in the draft than good CBs are. Although it pains me to pass on a Newton/Murphy II type.

Heard interesting talk about draft success in the first round. Criteria was their 5th year being picked up. 44% success rate. While they delved further only 34% were offered a 2nd contract by the drafting team. Obviously there are some outliers to those stats like maybe the athlete hit the FA market and didn’t want to resign but still wow. Someone yesterday was saying how it’s so easy to land a WR these days… actually WR have the highest fail rate in the first round out of ANY position. I found that interesting as well.

I asked about favorite vocalists.

If you are talking biggest range is Axl Rose from GnR, this is literally A FACT!

If you are talking about most consistent high level performance then you are talking Dio… also sort of a fact lol. People who toured with him said he NEVER had a bad night, that’s unheard of. Every athlete, every musician etc… all have bad nights… no Dio, he is a god!

Freddy is probably the greatest musician as a frontman, one of the very few frontmen who is also the best musician in the band lol.

Personal favorite like I said yesterday Mikael Akerfeldt. Most of you, if any don’t even know who he is. He has one of the smoothest and chill singing voices and an amazing brutal gutteral growl and a music genius ta boot!

Also on the music side, love Sublime. I saw Jakob Nowell, the son of the late original frontman just played with them and played his dad’s one of a kind guitar and his amp. Pretty cool shit!

Two songs showing Mikael’s insane ability as a musician. First song is from Opeth’s Damnation album. I very much did not like death metal gutteral vocals until getting into this album. It was a whole album of this sort of proggy chill Pink Floyd type stuff. This is real audio too not doctored up. Most studio and live footage is usually doctored up, Mikael refuses. So while he doesn’t necessarily hit crazy high notes and stuff. It just just how smooth it is with his amazing playing ability at the same time.

Nick Wright did his mock and didn’t have the Vikings taking any QB with #11 or #23.

I have done that when Mocking before.
With Trade backs especially you can acquire quite a few good/decent players that way.
Then either go with the 3 QBs we have on the roster or take a flyer on a Milton, Rattler, Pratt or Travis type.

Chad Forbes from NFL.com says……

With the NFL Draft 10 days away, Forbes identified two ideal rookies for each NFL team late last week, and for Minnesota, Nix was the selection with the No. 11 pick and UCLA EDGE rusher Laiatu Latu at No. 23.

I have seen reports/breakdowns/opinions of ‘experts’ on each of the top 6 QB in this draft. Some from people/sites I trust, some not so much.

You can find pro and con arguments on each of them. For example I have seen articles/videos this week saying that ‘JJ will get a GM fired for picking him‘ and others that say ‘JJ will make us SB contenders‘.

At this point I will have to throw up my hands and trust in KOC, McCown, and KAM to get it right, which is a hard thing to do.

I want to ‘pray’ for a good result but I don’t believe that to be a valid use of prayer morally.
So I will have to resort to keeping fingers crossed and other luck related activities instead.

If it is on The Curse Of Oak Island it has to be true.

This would be almost more of a KOC we trust. I know KAM would be the one responsible for picking but KOC as the HC and OC and former QB… He would most likely be wanting whoever we land.

Why I put KAM last.
But he is the one who will decide if the ones KOC/McCown want are worth the price to go and get them.

Music is not really my thing – certainly not much of a critic.
Just asking, is Pavarotti a vocalist? Elvis, or is he more of an entertainer?
And Streisand seemed to be able to hit all the notes.

oddly enough, i played baseball in college with a kid who’s dad was an elvis impersonator AND his kid brother was a young elvis impersonator

AND my co-worker knows an elvis impersonator and rather than actually listed to the real elvis, he listens to the impersonator friend…..

I thought of that, too, but I don’t think Opera singers count as vocalists. I checked with Google, and it sort of agrees. Different technique, no microphones, etc.

i can’t argue any of your comments…

quick story about when Layne Staley died.
I worked at meat market when i was 15-17 and one of the main butchers was a HUGE music guy, so he introduced innocent little me to many bands, one of them being Alice in Chains. When we closed the shop together on many occasions he would blast Alice in Chains through the store speakers. Anyways, the day Layne Staley died, the butcher guy was VERY emotional, and i didn’t really understand at the time what was lost until i got more into AIC a few years later.
But i will always remember that butcher and i’m thankful he introduced me to the bands i had never known/heard of until him

QotD – You mention Aretha for female singer, and that is a solid choice that I cannot argue. Same with Freddy.

For currently “Alive and Kicking” singers, this could be a fun topic.
Kelly Clarkson can sing. This topic would take some thought, and I have not had any coffee yet.
