The Vikings came into this game looking to build on their 6-game winning streak. The Bears were already out of the playoffs & had nothing to lose. This could have been a recipe for disaster, the Vikings had to come in ready to play.
There were two Monday Night Football games last night, as the Falcons and Raiders squared off in Vegas. As of this writing, the Falcons are clinging to a 6-point lead, praying that they can hold on against that vaunted Raiders offense. If they don’t win this one, we could be looking at a new quarterback in Atlanta.
Vikings vs. Bears
In the first half, the Vikings defense stifled the Bears offense. They got a fourth down stop on the Bears opening series, and they alllowed the Bears offense to do very little the entire half. They held the Bears to 59 passing yards, 63 rushing yards, and zero points in the first half. In the first half, the Bears were 0-5 on third down and 0-2 on fourth down. That’s a nice performance by the defense. The offense moved the ball and did enough to get the ball into scoring range. They weren’t able to get touchdowns once in the red zone, settled for 3 a couple times, and attempted and failed one fourth down conversion while in range (I still don’t understand why they didn’t take the 3 there). The running game was working fairly well when used, and Sam did a good job of spreading the ball around.
The offense went into its customary break period to start the 2nd half, they actually gained negative yardage on the first series. KOC finally realized that the Vikings are allowed to run the ball, and once they started doing that, the offense seemed to hum along much better. Sam finished the night 24/40 for 231 yards and one TD. He also had one pick, but it was on a 4th down play, so he gets a pass for that. The Vikings defense continued to stifle the Bears offense, harassed Cayleb Williams, and closed out the game for the Vikings, helping the team get their 12th win of the season. In the end, the Minnesota Vikings won the game 30-12, they are 12-2, and they control their own destiny when it comes to the #1 overall seed. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, shit
Good luck.
he’s usually gone fishing…..
Lately he’s been gone limpin’
Say it ain’t so.
And on a Holy Kirk day.
The good news for Kirko, is that you know he was with his family when he got the news so he had some emotional support.
I am sure Penix was in the facility working out, so it was not hard to find him and tell him to be ready to start.
He was smart to want Mannion as backup here.

Cousins benched in ATL
Wow!
Wow. QB insurance for a playoff team? I don’t think Teddy would have said this if he wasn’t already talking to a team.
I am good with this, as long as doesn’t beat us.
Probably won’t play unless the starter gets injured.
He took a pretty good lick just prior to that.
But definitely not a ‘good look’ for him.
Ya, he got the s*** knocked out of him, not sure why he was jumping around like he was, but he got smacked hard.
LOL….
This is where Buck and Aikman said something like he is tired because the college season isn’t as long as the NFL.
Dumbasses
How is he not a shoe in? There were people predicting the Vikings would have the #1 overall pick in the draft and he has them in contention for the#1 seed in the NFC and possibly the best record in the NFL when all is said and done.
@It’s because we’re just lucky and have played teams when they suck or have key injuries@
Cause it does not support the NFLs narrative.
Whatever that is at the moment.
Vikes are 3 point road favorites this week
i’m a big fan of the NASCAR package, all defensive ends on the defensive line….
also, any news on O’Neil?
ok, i actually did the work myself and found out that everything came back clean and good in a scan of his knee, both KOC and O’Neil said he’ll be sore, but good to go for this upcoming week.
Gilmore should be back this week per KOC
Redmon is in concussion protocol but KOC said he came to the facilities today feeling really good so maybe he will pass those soon
Ivan Pace Jr is ahead of schedule and KOC said when he is eligible to come off the Injured list for the Packers game, he will be full go
That was a scary looking injury.
Slipped out to the funeral of a close friend for an hour and a half this morning. Snow is falling thick and heavy. Held at the Moose Lodge, must have been really dusty in there cuz my eyes were watering something fierce, plus I had some allergic reaction because when people were going up to the front to talk I knew I couldn’t do it cuz of the lump in my throat. That was tough.
When I got back to the hospital, some of the techs didn’t know I had gone to the funeral and were worried as I was gone for so long. They thought I had gone for a walk as I often do this time of day and were worried I had slipped and fallen, as there are several fractured hips transiting the ER today. Nothing makes ya feel older than having a couple of 30 something gals saying they were worried you fell down in the snow and ice and couldn’t get up or call for help.
Sorry for your loss Doc.
Gotta make you feel good that folks care.
Speaks to what you mean to them.
Naw
They just wanna keep doing xrays so they get paid.
Sorry for your loss, MT.
For a Gouger you have a soft heart.
It’s funny, you can straight up tell family members their loved one has cancer but to look at my friend’s family and tell them how much they are like my adopted family – one of the first people I met when I moved into my basement apartment right next door, had my first beer in Glendive with him – I couldn’t do it and didn’t want to start blubbering in front of 300 people.
Sorry for your loss, MT.
Sorry to hear that, amigo.
It’s looking like next year we will not need the services of both Greenard and Van Ginkel. I believe we keep one of the two, who would you prefer we keep?
I believe Greenard is under contract for one more year. Do we trade him and keep Van Ginkel or keep Greenard and let AVG walk for no return?
IMHO Turner overlaps Gink’s role and abilities.
Or you keep them both and with the versatility that you’re training Turner in find a way for all 3 to be on the field.
idk why we can’t keep all 3? greenards 22mill cap hit is already being taken into account with your 70 mill cap space next year
defensive line depth is ALWAYS a need
In KAM we trust.
Vikings Puker game will NOT be flexed in week 17.
Good news.
I had seen somewhere before for some reason they cannot flex it to Sunday night or Monday Night, but can they still flexed it to late Sunday afternoon?
Maybe
Fox has NFC and only noon or 3 o’clock time slots. NBC has Sunday night. ESPN/ABC has Monday Night. And Amazon has Thursday night. Fox won’t give up a good matchup.
*12-2
Also, I figured the vikes would drop this one against the bears. Can’t seem to shake > 2 decades of vikings stench. I am worried about the seahawks as well. We don’t oft win there.
That’s the past. The Seahawks aren’t that great this year, especially at home.
Cam Robinson will try and personally set the NFL record for false starts in a game (11 at Lumen Field in 2005).
And Geno might be ded
Sounds like he should be fine.
Just a tweek.
Or did he aggravate something?
I heard it was a reaggravation of an existing injury.
Turners sack was extremely athletic. he got LOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
That was amazing, and great hand violence to go with it.
too bad he’s a bust
I’m not sure if you will be able to read it, it’s from the Star Tribune so it may be paywalled.
Pretty much talks about how Turner’s development has been slowed to make him a better all around defender, and work on his pass coverage. Due to the fact our OLs are so good and we didn’t need him to play right away.
https://www.startribune.com/vikings-dallas-turner-first-round-pick-rookie-brian-flores-defense/601194406
I like it. Instead of throwing him out there and seeing how it goes, train him to be a versatile perennial All-Pro.
Love it. His skill set is unique.
He can be an edge rusher or a 3-down off-the-ball linebacker. His 40 time is faster than half the SS in the league.
Sky is the limit with this kid
I see him way down field in protection quite a bit. He had a decent game last night
I was told that Turner is a bust because he can’t get snaps (ahead of 2 All-Pro level OLB).

That makes me thirsty for beer.
I’m thirsty…not for beer.
Unless they change it, the Lions play on MNF week 17 so they will be on a short week going into the Vikings game.
Every time I fly commercially I swear that I will never do it again and at the time I am convinced I never will. Got back from Missouri this morning at 12:57 am. left my daughters house at 12:pm. 4 lane traffic near St Louis and I am not used to driving in it. Then, get felt up by TSA, then getting to watch a few plays of the Vikes on layover in Denver. Then a delay out of Denver. Then getting back to Helena 45′ late and having to drive over Mac Pass on crap roads. Didn’t travel > 45 mph for the first 60 miles. When I retire I am going to drive anywhere I go.
Son told me vikes looked sloppy, didn’t see enough of the game to make a judgement. What say you? Also can the vikes out score Detroit in a shoot out. Campbell knows his D is on the ropes and is gonna game plan to try to put up 45.
Buy your own plane.
Vikes looked sloppy in the first half. Second half they came out and looked terrible on the first drive. After that the game was more fun.
They can outscore Detroit, if things are firing as they should Detroit does not have a great pass rush right now, and you can also run the ball against them. We just need a lot of points to win vs the Lions.
More worried about FTP and the Seahawks right now. Win this week, then I can stress about FTP.
Win that, then I can stress about the lions.
The Vikings have a good enough defense to not give up 40+ too like the Bills. They aren’t going to have to score 50.
I have not flown since 9-11.
Drove from SoCal to Houston for my daughters wedding 24hrs straight coming back.
It was fun.
Strong work!
The Taco Ma did me proud on that trip.
On your recommendation my daughter and I have been shopping for a Taco Ma for several months. We are in no hurry, boy are they expensive in these parts.
New? Yes very.
Part of the reason I am not giving mine up despite several offers.
Not sure what the used market looks like. My 2007 probably won’t get me what it worth to me.
My daughter has read much about them. Relays that ’05-07 are the best. and also pre-2020. Looking 17-19 for her (our) budget.
Love to hear that ’07 were among the best.
Got a great deal on it. It was the last ’07 on the lot so they sold it to me (with all the bells and whistles) for the cost of a basic ’08. They even showed me the invoice for the ’08 to compare.
TSA is a joke.
TSA in Montana is a delight. Same in Hawaii on our annual trip there. But big city TSA is nightmarish. Orlando is by far the worst I have ever encountered. I have stories too numerous to count.
Doesn’t Montana TSA give you a gun if you don’t have one?
Buddy of mine worked TSA in Billings. Old timer from Big Timber came in and was complaining that there was no way he was going to fly to Chicago unless he was allowed to keep his carry.
I’ve seen them bend over backwards as in hold the line to allow people to run a knife or what not out to their car, or leave it with the front counter for a family member to retrieve.
I think if I had a knife in Orlando I’d probably be escorted to a quiet room and given the rubber hose.
Guantanamo is a short flight.
Darn, I was hoping to get some good airline miles. Does that hop have lay flat seats?
No but it has full beverage service.
Lodging when you land as well.
I tried flying out of Denver once with a loaded 22-250 round in my backpack (unknowingly). That took awhile to clear up.
Montana TSA agent: Hey der, looks like you forgot your side arm fella. Hear take this spare one, we keep just for this sorta instance.
Sounds more like Grand Forks. No daers and fellas in these parts. That reminds me, I always loved how small Billings airport is and then I flew out of Grand Forks once. They changed the gate to the opposite side of the airport, didn’t tell anybody and nobody missed the flight.
Well I live in Orlando. And before that DC, and Dulles is almost as bad.
I think those pricks that work TSA at MCO work on the kill floor at a hog abattoir in their free time. Sure feels like it.
Living in Glendive you have to live with the fact that it is expensive as hell to fly in and out of Montana, plus you get to drive 200 miles before you even get on a plane.
I would say the drawback of living where we live is about $300 extra per person to fly…and a jar of Miracle Whip is $9.
I am not 200 miles, am essentially equidistant between Missoula, Bozeman and Helena. Last thing we want to do when getting off a plane is to drive 3 hrs. Oh well, small price to pay.
Re: grocery prices, my 33 yo school teacher daughter was with me and mentioned that prices were crazy cheap in Missouri. Sales tax is 7.5 % though. Always screws me up when calculating a running bill while in states with sales tax.
Private is the best way to fly. Too bad I’m not at the corporate gig anymore.
Other than the obvious cheering against the Lions, Packers and Eagles this weekend, it looks like a Tampa victory over Dallas and a Jets win over the Rams are the games that can help the Vikings this weekend.
How does a Tampa victory help the Vikings?
The whole strength of schedule/victory thing since Philly plays Dallas twice.
A loss by Dallas lowers Philly’s SOV percentage.
Ah ok
If we are getting into the SOV tie breaker with the Eagles,
Losses by the following teams helps the Vikings.
Pukers
Saints
Browns
Giants
Bengals
Cowboys
Ravens
Panthers
Steelers
I was trying to simplify it a bit since some of those teams play each other. The Saints play the Packers so that one is a wash or I guess a Packer win might help the Vikings, but FTP. Browns and Bengals play each other as do the Steelers and Ravens. I missed the Jaguars one because I don’t see any way they lose to the Raiders, but hey anything could happen I guess. Giants play the Falcons so that is one I missed as well. Falcons winning that is a double help. Panthers play the Cardinals, so there’s another one that would double help if Arizona wins.
The Commanders pulling off a win would be ideal and a Bears victory would be glorious.
Tyrique Stevenson mocking the Skol clap down 10, in the midst of a 7 game losing streak he partially caused is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen.
Stupid is what Stupid does.
Bad things have happened to every player or coach to mock the Skol clap. I think he got hurt pretty shortly after this too.
Also, if he was smart he would have just knocked the pass down. He actually cost his team by intercepting that pass since it was 4th down.
That’s why I didn’t mind the INT all that much. Would have preferred 3 points (and also NOT having a running into the kicker a few plays later), but I understand why KOC went for it.
I was glad that he threw it up for grabs. That’s the right move and an unselfish move in that situation.
Now that you mention it, I think you’re correct.
Is that the same guy who shoved Addison away in the end zone and then shook his head when he got called for DPI?
I don’t remember but probably lol
yes. idiot for sure.
I believe he was the one that pretty much tackled Hock before the ball was even close and couldn’t believe he got called.
I am starting to think the reason the bares are bad, is because they have no idea what the rules are.
They have proven that during this losing streak that they are poorly coached.
They do seem to have decent talent on the roster though, some of it is too stupid to be used effectively it seems. Not sure if fixable.
I called this out in the game thread.
when will people learn?
DO. NOT. MOCK. THE. SKOL. CHANT
Dude was later called for PI on JA and injured iirc.
SkolKarma is real
He ain’t the sharpest light bulb in the happy meal
Sam Darnold did NOT have a great game last night, in fact well below average according to stats…but his stats would have been better if JJ had not dropped a wide open TD pass.
Kirko on the other hand was awful, producing a sub 10 QBR against the 31st ranked defense. Terrible. I know that Atlanta is one game out of first, but it may indeed be time for them give Penis a try.
Any of you ever do any fantasy type things for the NFL playoffs? We usually do a deal where you can pick no more than one player from each team and there’s some different scoring. I’m trying to find somewhere to do it online. It’s always been a spreadsheet thing and it is onerous to say the least.
Well, sometimes I like to dress up as a Vikings cheerleader and … oops I see what you were asking. NVM.
I don’t need to know what you and the labs do when the wife is away.
No Kink Shaming.
MT when he is alone……
Funny thing came up when I Googled Glendive doctor cheerleader.
Whoa.
😂
LOL
I do a league where you make a line up each week of any play from any team that plays that weekend. But you can only use a player 3 times max through the whole play offs. So its a balance between who do I think will score the most this week but also will be on a losing team or be able to be used all the way through the play offs. That kind of thing. Its fun. Ill find the website for you.
Since I dropped the 100 on the Vikes to win the SB they have moved from +1700 to +1300. COME ON!! JUST ONE TIME!
Happy Tuesday Everybody! What a great day! Vikings win last night AND everybody’s 2nd favorite QB pulled of the win against the Raiders….AND
Today I have been married to the same female for 36 years! Have to remember to stop by and pick up a few flowers on the way home.
Happy Anniversary!
are you a biologist? how can you say she is female?
also congrats!
She’s got no stem down below so I am assuming she is indeed female.
And thanks!
Happy anniversary!
Happy anniversary. I was 2 when you got married.
38 is a good age to be…Old enough where you have some idea of how life works and you have likely stopped doing stupid things, and young enough where all of the body parts still function at a high level.
Please let your wife know we are praying for her. 36 years…that poor woman!
Lot of truth to that Wrenage! I can be difficult to live with, but so can she. Marriage is certainly work.
Congrats!
You two are so cute…..
Ha! Replace the little lap dog with a Cat and it would be about right!
Actually, my wife does 20,000 to 25,000 steps a day and is in excellent shape….I think she just goes on all of those long walks to get away from me for hours every day.
Happy anniversary!
Kirk & the Falcons put up 15 points on that vaunted 31st-ranked Raiders defense. LOL
PAY HIM ANOTHER $50 MIL! HE’S A PROVEN PRODUCT TOP 5 QB! DURRR!
it was nice to finally hear announcers not slobbering over Williams…
aikman was pretty blunt and called him out quite a bit.
also buck seemed lightly tipsy. waving at the camera goofy like, giving the camera thumbs up etc etc
i loved hearing their banter back and forth for how much qb’s make vs what aikman made, and buck just giving it right back to aikman (they still made bank back when you played)
i actually enjoyed those 2 last night
Buck was high on hair plugs
Way too many references to the Packers by Joe Buck Yourself, though.
Bucs gonna beat the Eagles in the playoffs?
Nope, not this time around.
Rats!
Lions will beat the Bucs/Rams, Packers will beat whichever they don’t and the Commies will knock out the Eagles. That would set up a Lions/Packers Divisional and the Commies come to Minny.
No way on earth the Commies beat the Eagles.
I think they might at least win this weekend. Playoffs, in Philly, might be a different story though. In the hypothetical seeding above, that would mean the Packers come to Minny and Detroit goes to Philly in the divisional. I think Philly would beat Detroit.
Right now Phily is the team to beat. Their coaching is suspect but they have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.
The Commies were gifted two wins, Bears and Saints. They’re over rated.
Division matchups can be unpredictable and Washington is fighting for a wild card. They go on a losing streak and Seattle, Atlanta, or Arizona could pass em. I think they will be more desperate and the dysfunction in Philly comes to a head this weekend and the Commies pull it off.
Lions can easily lose to the Rams and Bucs with the current state of the team.
Williams looked like he was going to go into crybaby mode on the sidelines.
Buck and Aikman were so loving to say he was tired.
Poor baby.
That hissy fit he was throwing was pathetic.
The way his neck jerked back I thought for sure that a. a flag would be thrown and b. it had to hurt bad.
Falcon fans are starting to get it.
Kirk be carpetbagging.
Why are you h8ing on Carpet Baggers like this??
Good call.
I have no right to be that harsh on carpetbaggers.
Carpetbaggers can probably grill.
Seahawks with probably their backup QB who LOVES throwing to other teams…
Packers… well they are the Packers but we’re at home at least that helps.
Lions are a team decimated by injuries…
Winning out is a real possibility!
Yep.
But we are talking about the Vikings.
Losing out is also a real possibility.
Enough with the negativity. Let the past go. It’s a new era.
A new error?
I tentatively tend to agree, but they still have to prove that they are not the same old (cursed?) Vikings. We’ll find out.
#nojinx
I won’t change until they change.
0-63
You’re pining for Kirk again? What is wrong with you?
Of course not.
Just living in Viking reality.
Enjoying the ride, but not getting overly excited.
Seahawks should be doable with Geno out. It is an opportune time to play them in that regard.
The only game the Packers might still lose is against us. They only have the Saints and Bears left, so if we don’t beat them, they are winning out.
I am concerned about the Packers gouging us with Jacobs.
Fortunately, they have that wimp at TE. What is his name again? Velveeta?
I dunno, backup QBs scare me.
Did you see Howell play?
How well did Howell play? Like Thurston or Lovie?😁
Remember when we played Cooper Rush a few years back? Made him look like Tom Brady!
BUT this defense is different.
Howell looked really bad. He went 5 of 14 for 24 yards on 7 and a half drives. Walker and Charbonnet are a good pair of RBs though.
I used to think this way, but with b-flos defense, it’s different. He can confuse any qb that isn’t one of the greats.
ha! I will be at a Vikings Brewery in Phoenix to watch the game, in Vikings gear still cheering for Tucker. Always confuses people.
Geno might play:
MacDonald didn’t offer clarity on a specific diagnosis, but said that “structurally, it’s all there.” He believes that Smith will practice this week and has a chance to play in Week 16 against the Vikings.
I’m not worried either way. They have not looked that great in any game this year. They’re a .500 team with a losing record at home. The Vikes need to show up, but KOC will have them ready. They’re on a mission.
If our defense plays like it did last night, i’m not worried at all.
we just need to stop running into eachother when almost getting to the qb, and just wrap him up
Winning in Seattle is a must at this point for seeding. I hate when the Vikings go into an opponent’s stadium needing to win, especially when they are clearly the better team. If they win this one I can relax and just hope for wins weeks 17 and 18. Of the last two games, GB at home will be the toughest, methinks.
‘GB at home will be the toughest, methinks’
Because of the Loins injuries??
That, and GB is looking really good right now, and they match up well against our weaknesses and vice versa. So it will not be a cakewalk.
If only they had already played to settle that….
one thing i really liked seeing was with like 7 minutes to go, we essentially had our backups in on defense.
that’s the big difference between a well coached team/smart head coach vs an aggressive/meathead coach…
our starters get rest and our backups get valuable play time and we stay healthy while the lions play their starters the entire game even when up 4 scores, and they are dropping like flies.
goodness i love this team.
Except-Sam stayed in the game…. that puzzled me
i can see KOC’s thoughts on that though. He still wanted to get first downs and just ice the game completely.
but I think something is wrong with Sam’s hand, some of this throws were not his normal throws….but then his 1st down to jefferson at the 1 was an insane throw, so idk
if you are talking about the throw to the 1 yard line…. I still can’t see how that got to him!!
yes i am. that was an incredible throw.
He hit somebody’s helmet at one point pretty hard. Maybe he bruised it a bit.
well he did have his pinky sort of taped at the start of the game and then i do remember seeing him hit a helmet as well.
just seemed a bit off on some throws. but i’m not mad at him. he did what he needed to do to secure a good win
Yeah, nit picking a 30 to 12 victory that got them to 12-2 is a pretty good place to be.
and i’m really not nitpicking, just saying it seems like his hand is bothering him based on a few of his throws is all..
For sure. I saw talking heads right away last night and this morning saying that the Vikings didn’t really win that convincingly and they still aren’t a good team. 12-2 record doesn’t really mean much and the Lions are way better and already handily beat the Vikings. I can’t wait for them to be the 1 seed to see what ridiculous narratives they come up with.
Right now the Lions defense can’t stop anybody. Tough to go very far in playoffs without a defense.
Yet all you hear about is how great they are and how the Vikings are frauds. I hope the Vikings beat em by 30.
I hope in some way, the Week 18 (17th game) against the LOLions is meaningless yet Meathead Dan plays all his starters and wears them out some more. (Not wishing injury to happen though)
They would have to lose their next 2 games. It would be amazing, but I doubt it.
That would be sweet.
They may have been the ‘chosen ones’ but their defense is falling apart. They may score points but they give up a ton.
At this point, fear the Packers and Eagles more.
Dennis Prager autorec
(Maybe I don’t wanna know but…)
When do we think Jones suits up? My guess is next week.
Someone has to be cut in order for that to happen.
Could happen, but my guess is they don’t do anything with Jones until they have to.
Isn’t Rypien on the 53 man roster? Jones can take his place as soon as he has a cursory handle on the playbook.
Rypien’s the emergency QB last I looked (yesterday)
Well, that would be the likely move yes.
Like I said, someone has to be cut first before Jones can be in a uniform on the sidelines.
Actually no one has to be cut, he just needs to be designated as the emergency QB, instead of Rypien.
Rypien is on the 53 man roster.
He (or someone else) would have to be cut for D. Jones to elevated from the PS.
https://www.vikings.com/team/players-roster/
I meant they could swap the two out, if they wanted to.
Rypien would have to be cut, and clear waivers before he can be added to the PS.
Victory Tuesday! SKOL! FTP!!
I agree. Every Vikings fan should be happy.
12-2
Kirko had another dominating performance.
Finally threw a TD pass last night.
You can’t stop…
Good Victory Morning Skolos,
Skol
FTP
FTB
Defense played well. Got some good luck when that OL didn’t report. That’s the difference between well-coached teams and not well-coached teams.
We give up a ton of yards between the 20s, but the red zone defense seems to clamp down.
Hopefully we can get home for more sacks against less mobile QBs. If Caleb has one elite ability (other than applying nail polish) it’s probably elusiveness.
The game would not have been so close if JJettas doesn’t drop that perfect pass from Sam. That seemed to change things.
I feel like Sam’s throws were off more last night. I wonder if hitting his thumb on that helmet affected his accuracy.
Agree. Not sure what was up with Sam, but he missed some throws he normally makes.
Glad they got the win on a sloppy performance. Pulled together in the second half, or CHI just gave up.
Bit of both, I think.
Williams has a rocket for an arm you could see it at times.
He seems to be lacking between the ears, though. Hope dabears will wallow in futility for a long, long time.
Yep, he does, but the trajectory of that rocket needs calibrating.
Darnold is just letting us down easy, so we won’t miss him next year.
They’ll tag him.
No way. That’s a BS move. Let the man get paid.
We’ll see, but it wouldn’t surprise me. That way he’s around for them to make sure JJ is really ready to go or they could always tag and trade. That way they get draft picks out of the deal and Sam would still end up getting paid.
I could see them using the tag to keep one of the defense guys around though too.
who on defense do you think they would tag? gink and greenard are already on contracts, think it would be someone like patrick jones?
I thought the Gink was on a 1 year deal. Looking at Spotrac though I see he is not. Murphy, Gilmore and Griffin are all set to be free agents. I don’t know if they are worth tag value but I would think they need to bring back at least 2 of those guys somehow. Bynum and Jones are both set to be free as well. I’d like to see Jones back next year. We saw how well it worked last year with Mattison. Don’t go down that road again.
Bynum?
That’s what you say to your plate when the waitress takes away a really good steak.
Why would the waitress take away a really good steak?
Was it too rare for you??
It was too big and you couldn’t eat it all or maybe you gave her lip and she took it away like your mom when you chew with your mouth open.
‘it was too big for you’
They don’t have to take it away to ‘box it up’.
And they are surely not taking away food I paid for, not even my mom.
Tagging him for a year means he doesn’t get paid??
$40-45M seems like getting paid to me.
For one year, yes.
Sam is going to get a 3+ year contract with guaranteed money adding up to a value greater than 45MM elsewhere. Plus, he won’t have a first round, second year pick on the roster threatening his job on most other teams.
^this^
You don’t think he’d get a deal after getting tagged? If they tag and trade him, the receiving team can give him a long term deal. If he stays in MN on the tag then he’ll either start and have an opportunity to increase the contract offers or at the very least make 45 mill and then have the same market in 2026. He loses nothing.
Mmmm…career ending injury?
Yep. Tis why players h8 the franchise tag.
If he gets hurt or gets beat out by JJ, his big contract goes…poof!

Too bad for him he doesn’t have a say in getting tagged unless KOC and Kwesi are just feeling nice.
That’s exactly the sentiment that’s being communicated by them. They told him they wouldn’t tag him when he signed and being player friendly they aren’t likely to.
So you honestly think KAM will tag Darnold at a $45 million a year contract?
It wouldn’t surprise me. I would rather just roll with JJ next year, but if they win a game or two in the playoffs it might be hard for them to do. They did let Kirko walk though and JJ is KOC’s guy so who knows, but my gut is telling me that if he doesn’t turn into a pumpkin they are going to have a hard time letting him just walk. At least in a tag and trade scenario you get some picks out of the deal and end up not losing anything in cap.
‘a $45 million a year contract?’
It would be a one year tag.
And the braintrust would have to believe we are very close and have doubts about JJ being healthy/ready.
Or they are close and it’s an insurance policy. How contract discussions are looking with some of the defensive free agents could play into it as well. If they are looking like they might need the cap space for them then let him walk. If they are able to extend a couple key guys and still have the cap space, then use it unless you are confident in somebody in free agency that you think you have to have.

Kirk still sucks, even though ATL got a lucky win.
12-2! What a season so far! On to the Seahawks!
Crazy that we’re 12-2. Some tough games ahead, but it’s been an awesome season.
What a season! Man, last summer I was a doomer and predicted 6-7 wins. I suck.
