Wow, Kirk is on the bench in Atlanta! It’s not shocking, when you consider how poorly the Falcons offense has performed recently. They put up 15 points against the Raiders defense on Monday, and Kirk threw his first touchdown since week 9. That’s a long drought.

The Falcons will insert Penix into the starting slot, thrusting him into NFL regular season action for the first time. It’ll be up and down, as it is for any rookie, but with some stamina, they’ll produce pleasant results. Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Vikings News

Former Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has been benched in Atlanta.

Vikings.com checks the Vikings place in the various NFL power rankings. Some of these make little sense, until you read the reasoning for their rankings, then it makes even less sense. Read Josh Kendall’s (The Athletic) description.

NFL News

CBS Sports tracks the latest league injury news at their 2024 NFL week 15 injury tracker.

From Penn Live, an RFK Stadium site provision is included in the Federal spending bill. Great news for the Commanders, not so great news for taxpayers.

Media Selection

A song from Kirk to the Falcons.

Its a playoff game where you pick no more than one player per team. We call it horses. You fill a normal fantasy roster. There’s no points for yards just tds and fgs. More points for longer tds.

It’s kind of cool, Riffmas has been an even put on for years by the band Rifflord. Many years ago they always did it at this indoor skate park in Sioux Falls called “The Siouxer.” Address is “201 N. Harlem Ave.” So we are doing it there again. So, yeah in Sioux Falls. Rifflord is headlining again. Good dudes, known their front-man for a long time, his wife (also in the band) I went to high school with and their newest member a guitarist is a buddy of mine I’ve jammed with a lot over the past few years and lives right down the road from me haha.

He just has no cowboy gun slinger in him. Which being an NFL QB needs. He’s like a classically trained guitarist, or Jazz band only guitarist that can play anything or make any throw as long as it’s scripted and on the sheet music or is part of the play. But man, QB needs some dirty blues improv, and taking a chance at times and getting creative. He has every skill needed to be amazing, he has the work ethic to be amazing… just not wired to be that calculated risk taker… just decides to check that fucker down on 4th and a mile with the season on the line.

I wouldn’t. I’d put them in the Randy Rhoades and Eddie Van Halen category. Those two guys are classically trained musicians that can absolutely shred and rock out with the best of them. Beethoven is more known for his composing than his playing, to me that’s more of a coach than a player in my eyes.

Jefferson is obviously a bum. Thielen was never anything. The fact that KOC has Sam Darnold at 12-2 proves he is a hack. Shanahan was a bum. He never even won a SB after him and Kirk weren’t together.

He will undoubtedly flame out. He may get to Baker level, but he will never play at the level he is now. That’s what makes me confident in JJ if that’s what KOC decides. If KOC is ready to let Darnold walk to move to JJ, he’s gonna be a stud.

It was fantastic! Nothing but good things to say about the place, time there and the game. Booze prices on Music row were sky rocket high but I was prepared for that so it wasn’t a surprise. I got some pictures from the trip I can post some other time. Thats awesome! I got a SKOL chant going when I walked into a bar and two Packers fans walked out (WHY WEAR YOUR PACKERS SHIT THERE WHEN IT WAS A VIKINGS TITANS GAME IN NASHVILLE?!) I said ” Fuck the Packers” to their face as they walked by and the guy singing in the band at the bar door heard me, and went ” Fuck the Packers? Who are you a fan of sir, Cheifs? Go Mahomes” and I went “Fuck Mahomes, SKOL!” And I started doing the chant and, now I know this sounds like I made this all up, I did not, half the bar behind me started skol chanting with me, it was amazing .Drunk Kfey was on one that Monday night ha.

Seriously though, every one was nice, having a good time, weather was awesome, easy to get around, nothing too sketchy. And the Vikings chapter down there is huge.

Stuff that only I might be interested in…
Based on yards per game…

Team Offense Rank Defense Rank
Eagles 6 1
Packers 4 10
Lions 2 14
Chiefs 14 5
Vikings 12 13
Bills 7 23

I would say based on those numbers we appear to be the 5th best team.

But I think we are peaking at the right time.

The last line is key. Peak at the right time. Remember the Giants when they snuck in to the playoffs as a wild card? I’ll agree with Dr. Debbie Downer that the Packers may be worrisome. They seem to be getting healthier as well and getting their poop in a group, unfortunately.

Offense still goes stagnant at times. KOC still has occasional brain farts. Defense gets gashed. If they can clean that stuff up at the right time, they can do some damage.

If they cut or trade him they have like a 60 million dead cap hit next year and if he’s on the team after March 15 an additional portion of his 2026 contract becomes guaranteed. They either have to eat having the second highest paid backup in the league (Watson is going to take that award) or cut him before March 15 with a post June 1 designation so they only have 40 and 20 or so million dollar dead cap hits. Maybe he retires? I don’t know how that would affect the cap though.

Retirement would like void the year 2 payments, no way he walks away from $40 million
i also read he has a $10 million “injury clause” ( similar to Daniel Jones), so that may have played a role in them benching him. If so, that may indicate Atlanta plans to cut him after the season
$100 million for 14 games, I picked the wrong sport….

They might be more willing to with the success Denver is having, especially if Penix looks good for the rest of the year. That’s still going to hurt though. Cut him prior to March 15 and take a $65 mill dead cap hit. I thought $29 mill was bad.

Discussion on the matter from Florio.
I wouldn’t expect Kirk “I want to retire a Redskin/Viking/Falcon” Cousins to do them any favors.

They already owe him $27.5 million, beyond the $62.5 million he has received for 2024. If he’s on the roster on the fifth day of the 2025 league year, another $10 million in 2026 becomes fully-guaranteed.

Why should he waive the no-trade clause? He won’t make any more money with a new team than the $27.5 million he’s due to receiver. And his new team would have to give up a draft pick to get him.

Kirk should dig in his heels, refuse to be traded, and either take $27.5 million to not play (plus another $10 million in 2026, if they don’t cut him) or get released and pick his next team at the league minimum, sticking the Falcons for the balance.

Again, it’s just business. And business goes both ways. Teams routinely make shrewd business decisions about their players. Cousins has made a series of shrewd business decisions about his teams.

Why should he stop now?

bowbunch

Waiving or not waiving the no trade clause makes no difference and would actually give him a chance to realize more of his contract. If he plays total hard ball he ends up getting cut. If a team were actually willing to trade for him then he’d have a chance at the rest of the contract. He’d make more money if a team were unexpectedly willing to trade for him.

Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League Update #15

I had another good week, only getting one wrong. I picked the Chargers over Tampa which bit me. That was a tough game for me, heart-wise. I really like Baker Mayfield 2.0, but Herbert is incredibly dreamy, so I went with him in the end

I don’t feel any betrayal, though (not like I would from a QB with the initials of KC). Sometimes the dreamy ones simply don’t come through. It wasn’t Herbert’s week. Oh well. Hopefully, he can come back with a win next week.

Here is a bird’s eye view of things:

Bowbunch continues to live dangerously with his gambling picks to gain ground. It is fun to watch. You can’t help but pull for the kid as he tries to catch Little Fishin’, Freezy and JacksonVike in the 8-10 spots. Freezy and JacksonVike need to stop going easy on Little Fishin’. He’s going to lull them, pass them by and then laugh manically in their faces and they look upon his ascendance and beg for him to take them with him.

I have been trying to catch DE Viking and Surly Viking for ages now. Since I write this summary, I’m going to say I have caught up to them. If they don’t like that, they can take it up with management. I’m now only 14-17 points behind them. If I would stop following up a good week with a trash week, I could conceivably catch one of them this week. Unfortunately, I continue to follow up good weeks with trash week.

Whose fault is that? Kirk Cousins, of course. He has taught me how to be .500 too well.

We have a heated battle in the 2-4 spots, with NoDakRube, Kirk is NOT still good and I’d rather be fishing only separated by eight points. Lots of movement can happen there. I set the league to go through playoffs because…what else are we going to do? Soon it will be January. Pick ‘Em League is the only thing we will have going for us while the world freezes to a crack glaze and the only turtles are in our pants.

Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold continues his dominance of the number one spot. Somebody better send some goons to his door with baseball bats, so they can drop hints that it would be in his best interest to shave some points in the coming weeks.

Iconoclast Awards go to Bowbunch for taking Browns over KC and Indy over Denver. They also go to Kirk is NOT still good and Freezy for taking Miami over Houston and I’d rather be fishing and Little Fishin for taking Detroit over the Bills.

It is interesting how many of us took the Bills over Detroit. We must all be dazzled by Josh Allen, who is dreamy, yes, but not as dreamy as Herbert. Unfortunately, Herbert also burned the most of us. Only Kirk is still NOT good, Surly and Bow got that game right.

Everyone got Cincy, Washington, Baltimore, Arizona, Minnesota and Atlanta right. Wow, how about that? Everyone of us picked Kirk to win.

I guess it is Christmas, after all. Tis the season to be charitable. So let’s not go out mocking Kirk. Let’s bask in the glow of the man, the myth, the dream…

I know GF and a few others were complaining about the play calling, mostly that we should be running the ball more. I would agree with this argument, but I have been thinking about it and maybe KOC was so sure we would dominate the Bares, that he decided to use it as a “scrimmage”. Try some new things in the pass game early in the game, so if you have to you can change it up and still get the victory. When it was time to put the game away, we pounded the rock, gaining 5-10 yards per run it seemed.

Run plays, in my opinion, are less complicated. Whereas, a pass play takes timing, choreography and reads to accomplish. So if we are trying some new stuff in the pass game, a game against a bad team, where you get real time results is more beneficial, than hand the ball off and run through somebody.

Kirko benched, Vikings at 12-2. All things football are looking good. Tomorrow is my Friday, and I am ready for the staycation the rest of 2024 and watching all the football.

Happy Hump Day!

Gone fishin'

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing.
