Around the League
Well, the other three teams in the NFC North all decided to lose this weekend, which helped the Vikings’ position within the division. Watching the games from around the NFL, the power structure this year may look much different than it did last year, as is the norm in these days of parity. Hey, remember when some of the talking heads were talking up Green Bay and how the step-down from Rogers to Love may not be as dramatic as everyone is expecting? Around Bismarck
Kiddo and I ran another 5k on Friday, this was his seventh 5k. I’m proud of this little fella, I couldn’t have run a 5k when I was 8 years old, and he’s been running them since he was 6.
Then, on Saturday, I ran on a relay team for the Bismarck marathon. The team is made up of people who work at a treatment center where I do some volunteer work and where I lecture regularly. Our team name was the salty sober sloths. (I’m salty & sober, but I’m no sloth. Like Meatloaf said, two out of three ain’t bad). The day was perfect and I had a magnificent run, probably one of the faster paces I’ve ever run for a medium-lenth run (my leg was 6.1 miles, just under a 10k). With perfect weather and me enjoying the run so much, I almost missed my handoff to the next person on my team. I was cruising along, saw my teammates standing at the side, cheering for me, and I thought they were just there cheering. I had no clue I was at the end of my run.waved to them & kept on going. All of a sudden, the dude who was supposed to take the baton & do the next leg yelled my name. I would’ve just kept running if he hadn’t yelled, I was in the zone. The main thing was, we all had fun.
Kiddo and I did a little fishing on Saturday night, but we got skunked. We just fished from shore, it was more an excuse to just get out of town for a little bit so that I can retain what’s left of my sanity. We may not have caught anything, but wow, what a beautiful night. If it hadn’t been so late, we’d have taken the boat out.
Fantasy Football
This is my second year ever playing fantasy football, and the team we drafted (my kiddo and I pick together) is lighting it up thus far. I don’t talk smack about FF, because I’m literally stupid when it comes to FF, so I know that any success we have is likely short-lived. At least I can say that I’ve beaten kfey and ben so far. I’m fairly sure I started 2-0 last year, then finished close to the bottom by year’s end.
Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day
The Vikings are still in the hunt for the NFC North title. I think most of us will agree that the Lions are the team who will challenge the Vikings for the top spot. The Packers have a decent defense, but are limited offensively. The Bears are the Bears and don’t appear to be making any major positive strides this year.
This all being said, which position groups or specific positions on the team are the weakest? Does KAM need to be try to be active again this year prior to the trade deadline? If KAM has shown a strength, it has been his trades (not including draft day trades). He made a move last year to bring in Hockenson, and negotiated a pretty good deal for the Vikings on that trade. Do you have any favorite targets that are currently on the roster of a potential “selling team”?

So what’s the logic with Risner? Plug him in at LG where he would be comfortable and an upgrade over Cleveland?
Or get rid of the glaring weakness on the line at RG, thinking that moving a vet to a new position will turn out better than moving a young Cleveland who is struggling to play his own position?
Or our LT will be out a bit so they could move Cleveland to LT where he has experience and plug Risner into LG.
Not that Cleveland was a very good LT as a Pro but he might be the best we have with the backup gone for the season.
I know he played LT in college, but has he had any game snaps there in the NFL?
From what I can find he was drafted when Riley Rieff was our LT.
Then we made him a RG and then a LG.
PFF shows ‘starts at LT’ but number is behind a paywall.

2,396 snaps at left guard, 621 at right guard. None at any other positions. He’s played ~ 20% of his snaps at right guard, so moving him over there isn’t out of the question.
I think it depends on CD.
If he can’t go then Cleveland to LT and Risner to LG is a real possibility.
Using PFF grades, Cleveland is our best pass blocker on the interior line, his pass block grade is 76.9. Schlottman is 2nd with 66.0. The rest are in the low 50s
Omg…if he’s our best we are screwed because he’s a turnstile out there from what I’ve seen. If it was me I would try him at RG and plug Risner in at his natural position LG. I’m not opposed to putting Darrisaw at RG and Cleveland at LT either.

Regarding the Risner signing, last season, the Vikings starting right guard Ed Ingram led the NFL in pressures allowed with 58, according to PFF. And to make Ingram not feel singled out during his rookie year, Ezra Cleveland went ahead and allowed 53 pressures, the third-most in the league.
Why did KOC and KAM not address this complete failure during the off-season?
No idea really. I assume and heard them say they thought Ingram was developing. Cleveland I assume they like his versatility to play tackle. They both have nearly got Cousins killed.
New Vikings OG Dalton Risner earned a 72.6 PFF pass blocking grade in 2022, which ranked 19th among all OGs in the NFL (min. 500 snaps).
This was a no-brainer in the off-season IMO.

There defense is great. But, they seem to have problems with the 49ers – they can’t out physical them like they do to most.

Well, through two weeks the Vikings have allowed pressure on 25.8% of drop backs, fifth highest in the league. Here’s a shocker… the Vikings quarterback leads the league in hits with 16, the next closest is Joe Burrow’s 8 QB hits.

Well according to what I have read here, all QB’s get hit, so Cousins is no different from any other QB in the league.
You may notice that all major league hitters get paid to hit major league curve balls Yet, you may also notice quite a bit of difference.
All I know is Cousins is hit a lot more than most other QB’s. Since 2015 only three QB’s in the league have been sacked more than he has, and that doesn’t account for hits and knockdown’s. All three combined, he’s probably the most pressured QB in the league over the last 8 years by a wide margin.

on a baseball note…I did see a Deion show with a few other athletes and they’re all taking ball and playing NFL, MLB and NBA and he was asked what’s the hardest thing in professional sports and he said far and away it’s hitting that baseball. Batting he said is no joke at the MLB level by far the hardest thing to do.

For the cigar aficionados here there is a favorite cigar shop of mine on front street in Traverse City, Nolans, so I popped in there today and picked up 3 stogies for the course. I had the sweet lady there help me pick some out. I’ve always loved monte Cristo #4’s but all they had were #2 in the white series. Also picked up a Padron 5000m and a Sweet Jane she recommended.
At first glance I thought those were joy sticks for the females. I have to get it together.

Yeah, as a pass blocker, Risner was effective last season with a 73.6 grade. His run blocking wasn’t quite as good with a grade of 53.4. With run blocking being the big issue with the offensive line at the moment, that is something worth monitoring.
That said, last season, Risner endured the misery of playing under former Broncos O-line coach Butch Barry’s bizarre philosophies and was a leader in a room full of frustration, low morale, and confusion. MAYBE he has some upside here we can make use of.
Hopefully…I’m pretty confident he’s getting plugged in at LG, Darrisaw should be back from the ankle by the Chargers game he was close Thursday. Where Cleveland goes is the question. I don’t know if he really is any better than Ingram but maybe at RG he can find a rhythm with O’Neal.
Is he a LG by design? I’d rather get Ingram out of the lineup.
Or maybe take more showers and more good things will happen.

I had high hopes for Ezra at LG as many did here but it has been a struggle. He gets less run over and more one move see ya run right by ya stuff then Kirk gets blasted in the ribs. I think he might be more tackle material than the interior stuff.

Starting safety for Baltimore and a strong contributor.
Hamilton came into the 2022 NFL Draft with a ton of fanfare out of Notre Dame. Shockingly, he exceeded his lofty expectations and was easily the NFL’s highest-graded safety (87.6). He was a monster in every phase of the game and made 24 combined stops on just 600 total snaps. While he hasn’t yet reeled in his first interception, he did break up five passes in 2022. His increase in usage was a huge reason Baltimore’s defense improved down the stretch.

He’s been pretty good, but he is on the Ravens and Kwesi passed on him.
Definitely don’t think it’s easy but seems like forever since ours has been anywhere above average.

First, it’s only two games. Long way to go. While I would like to see Cousins continue on this pace for the next 15 games, it’s not likely he will. Mostly because we have one of the worst (if not THE worst) interior O-lines in the league.
Second, that Miami offense is the real deal. Great line, great receivers, great scheme, and Tua can get it done.
Tua has a jelly brain though and will not finish the year.
Would much rather Kirk threw for 250 a game (JJ can have a 100) and we could run the ball for 150.

How was golf today?
It was good…par’d the first hole, went on a double bogey run through a few holes mixed in with some pars. No triples shot a 91. Not what I wanted but by far the best I’ve shot on that course. Had a nice 275 drive on to the green on a short par four. Greens were lighting fast putting was a major challenge with the angulation they have. Had a good time shot 9 strokes better on the front 9 than my brother in law. He was impressed.
Well done – different course makes a difference.
Folks down here don’t understand how difficult bent grass greens with a lot of angulation – ball can get away from you really fast.
Bet you play better next day or so when you go out.

$$ shouldn’t be as much of an issue now that Cousins has 14 QBs being paid more than he is. He certainly handcuffed the team’s ability to sign quality FAs in the past, but now they’ve got the cash to significantly upgrade a couple of positions, they just won’t do it.
It’s amazing that he’s tallying those kind of numbers when we don’t have any semblance of a run game, but then we’re only 2 games into the season and the other teams haven’t game-planned to take away the passing game yet.
The lack of any effort to make the OL better in the past 2 years does suggest that they’re (not so) secretly planning to lose enough games and get in position to draft one of the studs next spring.
OL is wearing on me. WTH can qb behind that?
As opponents begin to shut down the passing game, our pathetic run game will rise to somewhere just shy of mediocre.
So we’ve got THAT going for us.

Seems passing game, right now, is our strength. All involved in that deserve credit. Better OL would only further strengthen that.
Defense needs help just about every where but may improve as season goes on.

One of his interceptions was a bomb and as good as a punt – put the team inside the 10. Ok by me.

Last time I checked, the stat people don’t hand out fumbles to the OL. It’s part of the game. Always has been.

With a couple games left tonight, the Vikings are currently 7th in the league in total offense (rushing yards plus passing yards per game). It’s interesting to note they have rushed for the fewest yards in the league thus far with 34.5 yards per game, yet are in the top ten in total offense. Hmmmmm…
They have to pass first. Pass to open up the run. Cousins, JJ, Hock, Addison, KJ… literally all of them are better at their jobs than any of our RBs…
KOC stated on an interview that running the ball from a gain per play perspective has made them throw the ball a lot more than they want. They simply can’t get any positive gains running the ball. It’s really sad that this is the case. That said, when they decided to bring the entire starting O-line back in the off-season, one could see this coming.
I tried to be positive about our RG but not have Bradburry hurts the whole OL. I know he has issues in the pass game but he mentally really helps the unit.
OK, but something doesn’t add up. We are suppose to be a better run blocking line. In addition, I would think most defenses are going to be playing against our passing attack.
So, what’s screwed up?
Well first, we played two of the best D-lines in the league our first two games, so that’s a factor. Second, we ain’t that good at run blocking. KOC said we kept missing the blocks we needed to make, to make the running game go.
You mean blocking the refs and our own guys isn’t the right strategy?
OK – will buy missing blocks will screw you up. But running right up the middle against strong defensive fronts ? Tampa’s ILB are great and Eagle are stout up front. Maybe run off tackle or outside?
And since we have a FB and a new huge TE, maybe some power runs using them?
I don’t disagree, but KOC is the offensive genius designing and calling plays. I’ll add he’s had all off-season to do this.
KOC went to the McKay school (not Shanahan). Rams aren’t noted for their running game.

Part of it has been circumstances but they have not run well at all.
Sometimes it’s about the Jimmies and Joes not just the Xs and Os. The interior OL sucks. Kwesi is 1/3 to blame for that… lol.

Oh man I really like Lewistown. Great fly fishing on Big Spring Creek…easy access to Little Snowies and the Judiths…nice little brewery (run by the Bozeman group GAH)…lots of little kitschy shops.
We drove into Bozeman for about fifteen minutes. People have been saying it for 30 years but Bozeman is destroyed.

With they way my family is, with me being the tag along on my side and my wife having a sister that is a tag along, I have nephews and nieces that are in their 50s and a couple of nieces that are under 5.
I’m 42 and I’ve got a 1 year old, her cousins from my brother, who is 4 years older than me, are 25 and 21.
