Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the DAY

The Vikings have two very good tackles but the interior oline still sucks according to my eyes and PFF, particularly because of pass blocking. PFF grades are Ed Ingram at 59 with 7 penalties (7th most in the NFL at his position) and 5 sacks (9th most in the NFL at his position) which is a combined top 5 worst in combo, and one strip sack of his QB (most in the NFL at his position). Risner had a PFF grade of 57 with 3 penalties (43rd most at his position) 0 sacks (least at his position) and 0 strip sacks of his QB: disclaimer, Risner played roughly 200 less snaps than the other IOL members. Bradbury had a grade of 60 with 5 penalies (13th most at his position), 3 sacks (14th most at his position), and zero strip sacks of his QB. Ingram and Bradbury graded either above average (Bradbury) or average (Ingram) in run blocking, but both had sucking grades in pass blocking. This is one of the few times I agree with PFF. Risner on the other hand graded well in pass blocking but below average run blocking. What would you do with this group considering Risner is a FA, Bradbury can be cut with no ded cap, and Ingram has sucked in pass blocking but is only going into his 3rd year (personal feeling regarding his character aside)?

I’m good. Tampa is cool… not cold. Played golf with a guy who pissed me off last Sunday. Started smoking this very stinky weed (he called it his medicine) as soon as we finished the first hole, talked in my backswing, and just overall was a rude, inconsiderate playing partner.

Shot 41 though, and told him I was going home after 9.

On the 4th hole, I left my approach shot short, on the front fringe of the green. The pin was tucked way back and I had about 90 feet. Had to go up one rise, then flatten out, then up a second rise, then downhill breaking right to the hole. He walks by, and says almost as I was starting my putting stroke, “good luck with that”. I had picked out my line, but obviously touch from that distance and the two rises, was pretty dodgy. I stroked that baby perfectly over the spot I’d picked out on the green though, and the ball rolled beautifully to the hole. I thought it was going in, but it came to rest about 2 inches from the hole. He goes “hmmmph… short”.

Yeah, dickhead.

Well, golf is a social event for me, more than playing competitively. I always compliment good shots and to me that’s just how you make a round more enjoyable.

I think this guy was competing with me, and I wasn’t competing with him. He shot 43 with a double on the 9th hole, to my par. He didn’t say “nice round” or “nice playing with you” or anything. Just asked me to drop him at the clubhouse while I took my clubs to the car. I brought the cart back and he got in and drove off.

Wasn’t NFL investigating Snyder for all the employee sexual stuff charges. But Snyder blackmailed them as he had stuff from owners meetings that would make the NFL look like crap.
Gruden then just sort of became a giveaway and Snyder got off (for a while).

Yes, the investigation into Snyder was centered around the Cheerleaders claiming he was basically pimping them out to rich friends at parties, and they were always sex objects wherever he had them go. But I also think there was a “hostile work environment” charge too.

I didn’t follow any of it though. The part about Snyder having dirt on the other owners made me chuckle. Billionaires gone wild…

Using the same data set I compiled in my long post on yesterday’s thread (I had to add the Buccaneers, Packers and Texans because they weren’t a Top 10 team based on RS record), here is my take on most to least likely upsets in this weekend’s games:

Chiefs – Bills is the most likely upset, to the extent you can consider a Chiefs win an upset (the Bills are only favored by 2.5 points which for a home team means they’d be a slight underdog on a neutral field). This is the most even statistical matchup of all the games, although the Bills 6th ranked offense trumps the Chiefs 15th place finish. That said, the defenses are both solid with KC getting a slight edge (2nd for KC versus 4th for Bills). The Bills have home field but the cold weather won’t phase KC, and their playoff experience over the past 5 season helps. That said, Mahomes is the real equilizer and the biggest reason

I think Buccaneers over the Lions is the next most likely upset. The Bucs have been on a roll the last 5-6 weeks but, more importantly, this is another fairly even statistical matchup. The Lions have the offensive edge, finishing the season 5th in points scored whereas the Bucs finished 20th. But the Bucs have the edge on defense, finishing 7th in points allowed compared to the Lions at 23rd. The biggest edge the Lions have is their 2nd ranked passing game against the Bucs 29th ranked passing defense, but despite the Bucs giving up a lot of air yards, they don’t give up a lot of points. The Lions have home field, and it will no doubt be rocking but, given their history, that comes with a lot of pressure that could affect both the team and result in some “Diaper Dan” play calls.

Next we have the Texans at Ravens. The Ravens beat the Texans on every statistical measure, other than offensive passing yards and rushing defense. That said, this is a “strength against strength, (relative) weakness against weakness” matchup. The Ravens have the #1 rushing offense but the #21 passing offense against the Texans #6 rushing defense and #23 passing defense. The Texans have the #7 pass offense and #22 rushing offense against the Ravens #6 passing defense and #14 rushing defense. The Texans also finished the season as one of the hottest teams in the league over the past 8 weeks, and Lamar Jackson has a “meh” playoff record. So, this could be a more competitive game than a lot of people are expecting.

The least likely upset, IMO, would be the Packers over the 49ers simply because San Fran is statistically, the most consistently, highly ranked team across all categories. They have the #1 QB in terms of both RS QBR and QB rating and the #3 offense and defense. Their offense attack is very balanced (#4 in passing, #3 in rushing), as is their defense, although a little less so (#14 against the pass, #3 against the rush). That said, Jordon Love has had a hot hand over the past several weeks and the Packers have a “top third” passing attack. Their best plan may be to attack the 49ers relative weak pass defense and hope that Shanahan abandons the run too early in the game, as he’s been known to do when pressed, especially in high pressure games (the Patriots vs Falcons Super Bowl, for example). On paper, the 49ers look like a team of destiny but I do believe the Packers have a punchers chance in this game.

Very solid take. Couple of thoughts.
Bucs offense can be very up and down – against Atlanta a couple of weeks ago was terrible. Against Packers, was great.
A thought on Packers. If Niners shut down Packers running game, will be interesting to see where Love is at as a QB.

Those are apparently things Kirk wants and Keiwsi won’t give. Not all contracts are guaranteed…so I sign a 3 year contract for 20 mill a year to play tackle for the vikes…if the contract is not guaranteed, they can cut me after year 1, not have to pay the remaining 40 mill, and not have it count against the cap.

Adding void years and restructuring contracts has become the norm when it comes to cap management in the NFL. KAM added two more void years to Cousins contract to navigate a one year extension.

Sooner or later you have to pay the Piper though.

I think KAM dumps Cousins, Hunter, and the Hitman this year. Smith is like a $15M cap savings if he’s a post 1 June release. That money will offset Hunters $14.9M cap hit, leaving Cousins $28.5M hit the only real issue. Of course Davenport will also be a $6.8M cap hit next year.

The Vikings have “done it” just fine themselves. By cutting ties with Cousins, Hunter, Smith, and Davenport this year, they’ll be in fantastic cap shape in 2025. They’ll be fine in 2024 as well, if not the top of the heap.

Day 8 of the outlaws in town. Day 8 of 11. The entire point of staying so long was to help my MIL clean out her house – she and my FIL are/were hoarders and there’s a lot to do. A LOT. Furniture, albums, clothes, piles of newspapers and magazines, tools, CD’s, etc….

18 totes of Survival-style MRE’s and protein powder for the upcoming apocalypse.

So far I’ve went every day to pick up my MIL and bring her to my house to play with her granddaughter – then I go back – alone, and clean/move trash, move snow and ice the walkways. I’d estimate I’ve spent about 35 hours over there the last week or so, with many more hours ahead of me.

Day 8 and my in-laws have spent 0 hours there – remember it’s their ‘top priority’ (heard that phrase constantly since they’ve been here) So far they’ve: Went to dinner with friends, 2 different museums, the movies, numerous shopping trips, trashed my house, let their kid tear up an ENTIRE ECONOMY PACK OF TOILET PAPER (laughing maniacally at the mess and NOT cleaning it up – I did), broke my favorite coffee cup and somehow lost a Roku remote that I cannot find anywhere.

In reference to his contracts, just like Kirk, I believe so. Taking money from corporations and saying your contract is not about the money are two different things and taking money from corporations could actually make him comfortable taking less from the Vikings. If he leaves MN, is he going to have the same opportunities as he does now? Kohls, maybe. Pizza Ranch? Probably not. Kirk: I’ve been blessed beyond my wildest dreams and at this point in my career, money isn’t the most important thing. In fact, I’m going on record to say I’m never going to make any money doing anything ever again. I will play for free, do free promotions for any brand that wants me and I will not take another dime in my lifetime. I’m also changing my name to Theresa, but you can call me Mother.

Dude, I am far from a Kirk apologist but you are so far off on this one you need to just let it go. He obviously was talking about signing a new contract. Do I expect he’ll play for $20 mill? Nope. Money may not be the most important part of a new contract, but he isn’t going to want to get disrespected either. Sponsorships are not at all connected to that statement. Of course he’s going to take the commercial gigs when they’re offered to him. That in no way shape or form has anything to do with what he will pursue in a new contract. If anything it incentivizes him to take less from the Vikings to keep those sponsorships.

The problem with a JJ trade isn’t the JJ trade itself. It’s whether or not we can trust Kwesi with whatever draft picks such a trade would net.

If Kwesi had nailed the last two drafts, I’d be all like, “Heck yeah! Trade JJ! Let’s Hershel Walker some team!”

Kwesi really, really has to not suck this offseason.

HUNViking

It’s whether or not we can trust Kwesi with whatever draft picks such a trade would net.

This is the crux of this matter. Queasy has not shown the ability to draft well – or even average – so far.

Trading the face of the franchise in such a situation might be a big mistake. Queasy really needs to nail this draft, I’d rather he does that with the picks he currently has to work with instead of getting rid of our best player.

Yes because “BPA” is weighted towards needs to some extent. If there is a WR sitting there at say 25 they have ranked as the 5th best player then you take the player and figure it out from there. As long as you don’t reach ridiculously like Ponder then having targeted positions can still work. Just don’t pigeon hole yourself into having to take one specific position no matter what.

My concern is the “diva” angle. JJ as a WR is prone to the diva syndrome. If the team is loathsome and he’s not getting catches and TD’s and W’s etc, in other words he gets frustrated = locker room problems and press room highlights. He plays hard and makes awkward catches = chance of significant injury. If the purpose of the team is selling #18 jerseys and keeping fans hopeful they will build around a superstar WR go for it, but best chance to build a complete team is trade valuable pieces at prime and start in the trenches and at QB. I think the team will have a terrible season next year so see the whole “well we will REALLY suck without JJ” as fools gold.

That said, per my post yesterday, if 70% of the Top 10 teams have a QB with a Top 10 QBR, then you can infer that, on average, 7 of the Top 10 teams have a “Top 10 QB” which leaves only 3 other QBs that are spread somewhere among the remaining 22 teams that didn’t finish in the Top 10.

Same goes for QB rating, which had a 60% correlation, leaving 4 Top 10 QB rating QBs among the remaining 22 teams. But as I said yesterday, QBR seems to be a better indicator than QB rating in terms of correlating QB stats with team wins.

I appreciate the effort put into your post and I wasn’t asking for you to do the homework. I just thought it would be interesting to see how many top 10-15 QBs are on teams that have bad to mediocre records.

My opinion on the IOL is draft or sign FAs to replace all three. Have a “true” starting position competition throughout the offseason and start the best players at their respective positions.

IOL is kinda ugly in the draft this year.

I could make up 10 names and you wouldn’t know the difference lol.

players with eligibility are returning vs. Bring day 3 picks. NIL money and the transfer portal making it possible

Or you could look it up and see what I’m talking about.

listing potential day 3 picks who have eligibility and you’ve never seen play to tell me they suck anyways doesn’t seem like a great use of my time

All three are weak. But before Kirk got hurt, line seemed to gel some and pass blocking became OK. Now, run blocking is another matter. We have to improve on this and I’m not sure if it’s the RB, scheme,, blocking or some combination.
do think a big strong center will help both the guards.

sucking is relative – it can still suck but if it’s.adequate enough to execute the play, it’s not good but livable (for now).
Still, run blocking sucks and has for a while. Need to be able to move the pile on some 3rd and 1’s.

The running is a two headed monster. Because we can’t say Mattison can’t see the open holes and then say there were no holes. I say it’s a combo of both. Obviously need to upgrade at OL and RB.

If they go the rookie route at QB there is probably some value in keeping Bradbury to make checks at the line. If you replace Bradbury and have an inexperienced QB then Bradbury’s replacement needs to be a solid vet. Are there any available that are actually that much of an improvement on Bradbury?

If you keep Risner, or bring in IOL that are not good at run blocking, we need to pick up a bruiser RB that can blow up a lineman on 3rd and short.

if you need 2 yards I’ll get you 2 yards, if you need 5 yards I’ll get you 2 yards.

What Edge are you taking at 11 and why?

The best there is, because we really need one. Should win “most insightful answer” with this post… 😉

This guy?

11. Minnesota Vikings: Laiatu Latu, DE, UCLA

Minnesota has made due on the defensive line, but Danielle Hunter’s age and pending free agency makes edge rusher a need. Latu has established himself as one of the top edge rushers in the class after recording 23.5 sacks over the last two seasons.

I’d take Newton from Illinois, then Taylor from the Hurricanes.

Newton is probably a top ten pick, so do you take a QB or Newton at 11?

Leonard Taylor III, Miami
His pass-rush win rate is one of the highest at his position, making him one of the best — perhaps the best — pass-rushing defensive tackles in the class.
If Taylor is the pick, Kwesi will likely have to move up to get him in the second round.

That’s kind of what I was thinking as well.
Take the best DL first, find your QB late round 1 or round 2.

Newton doesn’t rwally
fit Flores scheme.

need a big NT like Vea not a 3T

Yeah that didn’t bite em in the ass did it?

the Vikings DL had the worse pass rush win rate in the league in 2023.

Harrison Phillips wasn’t a NT, even though he tried.

Vikings trying to make square pegs fit in round holes

having a real 0-tech vs trying to have a smaller DT like Newton, who’s too small to be a NT as wel as not having the length to play a 5T is setting him up for failure.

Why are we taking Edge somewhere at 11? Am I missing something. Did he make you angry and so you are doing some mafia stuff to him?

But he wants to “retire a Viking”, give a team discount because “it’s not about the money”, and “win a super bowl”.

How can Kwesi say no to this?

Depends on the discount. If it’s truly a great deal then by all means let’s have Kirk back and pay him 25 million…

I agree with this. I cannot fault Kirk or his agent for wanting all the money they can get, and I cannot fault the Vikings for wanted flexibility.

Should be an entertaining off season.

Regarding the iOline.
Replace two of the three, and Risner can at least pass protect. But I would be happier if all three could be replaced.
