Minnesota Vikings Discussion

The Minnesota Vikings offense is struggling to score. The team is averaging fewer than 20 points per game over the past four games. This, despite the fact that the defense is forcing turnovers, and despite the fact that the Vikings are dominating the time of possession battle. When your defense is doing its job, and you’re controlling the ball on offense, one would assume that this would equal more points. That hasn’t been the case, the Vikings’ scoring has faltered for the past four games.

One of the biggest reasons for this lack of scoring is the turnovers the Vikings have committed, especially in the red zone. Another reason may be the Vikings offensive play calling. It sure seems like the Vikings offense has a tough time punching the ball in once they get near the goal line. The stats suggest support this hypothesis, stats courtesy of teamrankings.com. The Vikings red zone TD% for 2024 is 56.3%, but has fallen to 41.67% in the past 3 games (I couldn’t find data for the last four games, sorry).

Question of the Day

Does it seem like the offense is struggling in the red zone? If so, why do you think they’re struggling?

Vikings News

Kevin O’Connell discusses film from the team’s last three victories, from Vikings.com.

Vikings.com takes a look at the Vikings’ placement in the power rankings after their third straight victory.

NFL News

The Jets fired their GM Joe Douglas after more than five years with the team, according to NFL.com. In those 5-plus years, the Jets’ record has been 30-64. That record includes a 3-8 record this year, a year when ‘experts’ projected the Jets to go on a deep playoff run with a healthy Aaron Rodgers under center. The Jets unexpectedly fired their head coach earlier in the year, now they unexpectedly fire the GM. Do they know what they’re doing over there?

CBS Sports looks at what the Douglas firing means for the Jets.

Speaking of firings, the Jaguars are evaluating everything as they contemplate coaching changes………again, story from CBS Sports.

Speaking of poorly run teams who seem to always be in the midst of a rebuild……..Kevin Stefanski says he’s not worried about talk that he’s ‘on a hot seat’, according to ESPN.

Media Selection

This is really good, a pharmaceutical rep turned whistleblower sheds light on the practices that lead to catastrophes that affect the nation. Enjoy!

We sold ‘as is’ so we could leave whatever we wanted in the house.
We donated, trashed and gave away close to 1/3rd and moved the rest with us.
But there was still furniture and stuff in the house. Certainly not 80 cu yards, although I don’t really know how much that is.

Alan Lichtman needs Dr. Phil.

Lichtman is the acclaimed “presidential predictor” using his 13 point test to predict the election winner. This year, he failed spectacularly.

I went through his test and came up with Trump winning.
My wife was upset when she saw him predict Harris.
I reassured her, that Lichtman is a staunch dem with TDS.

Anywho….
Here he is going bonkers because someone called him out for how wrong he was.

After reading this article is seems like a reasonable call.
Two officials threw the flag on the play and both had good views.

DB was in perfect position to swat the ball out of JA’s hands, but he chose to launch himself into his chest with extreme force.

You see it a few dozen times per game – defense could simply reach down and tap the WR or RB on the shoulder to touch them down but they choose to roll them up. They hit or tackle after the ball carrier crosses the goal line. Hits/tackles when it’s obvious the ball carrier is going out of bounds.

It’s so obvious they’re trying to injure the ball carrier, not just force a turnover.

Well any center-QB exchange fumble is automatically charged to the QB.
As well as any QB-RB exchange.

Incredibly dumb. So RB can never be at fault unless he is running with the ball for a few steps? That pitch was just fine – Jones just didn’t catch it.

Then again, I guess dropped passes are credited to QB as incompletions, and tipped passes that are picked off (sometimes 100% receiver’s fault) are credited to QB as interceptions too, so from the consistency standpoint, they have that going. Still goes against common sense, but the NFL is stupid and rigged.

I’ve always said it should be treated like a wild pitch/pass ball in baseball. If the turnover is clearly the recipients fault i.e. drop ball, catchable tipped ball, or pitch, it should be accredited to the recipient. If it is clearly the QBs fault than it should be accredited to the QB.

Got some stuff off my ‘to do’ list yesterday.

Made necessary changes to our health coverage while the ‘Medicare open enrollment period’ is open. I always dread dealing with those Voice Mail Systems just to get hold of a person who may or may not be willing to help. Got lucky yesterday and got 2 out of 3 helpful people.
We also got our Internet/WiFi upgraded to fiber optics. We went from 100-300 Mbps to 550-650. With the long term deal it is about the same price as before. The installer had to run some lines around the house and thru the crawlspace under the house to get it right, but he managed it.

Going to the store of some needed Pre T-Day pickups. If we spend $100 in store we also get a free turkey. We already got one for the AF Base but a free one for Christmas won’t be turned away.

So all in all it is a cold, windy, and wet Happy Wednesday.

AotD:

I believe it is a combination of play calling and the fact that AJ is hurting. When your RB1 is injured you don’t want to try and pound it up the middle. So, the play options become limited. Personally I would like to see a roll out with TJ on a chip and out, to give Sam the option of running if TJ is covered or a dump pass to TJ if the LB comes after Sam.

This is sort of similar.
I read somewhere last year we were one of the worse teams in the league on 3rd and fourth and 1 (or two) when we ran the ball – for two or three years.
So, I started watching out line on short yardage running plays. Now, just eyeballing, seemed we seldom moved the defensive line off the ball.
I sort of concluded, right or wrong, we were more of a finese group and not so much power. But hell, I don’t know.

QotD: Agree with Surley – all starts with IOL and if your not strong there, creates limitations for play callers. And then, I wouldn’t say we have big strong WR’s. Our guys are built for open field and things get tight near the goal line, limited space.
Would also help to have a big strong RB and TE.
