Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Twinkies scored 7 in the 4th and 11 overall and the bullpen managed to only give up 3 for a 11-4 win in SD to avoid a sweep.
Back home to face the Cards on Friday.

I hope….

Sam Darnold experiences a Keenum-esque resurgence and earns a hefty payday with another team for 2025.

T.J. Hockenson comes back healthy and productive – whenever that is – preferably playing his best football toward the end of the year with a good foot forward for 2025.

JJ McCarthy is soaking in all the little nuances of being an NFL QB. Meetings, film study, rehab….. First guy in, last guy out – his injury doesn’t change that expectation. Learn, learn, learn and learn some more. I want him falling asleep at night with the playbook in his hands and singing play-calls in the shower. It’ll be his car in 2025, and it’ll be Autobahn ready.

The Tua/Flores beef scares teams away from B-Flo as HC for another year – another year with money to burn on the defensive side of the ball where we can address the immediate Defensive needs (IDL, CB) with known commodities.

That one or both of those Defensive needs is addressed this year by finding diamonds in LDR and Dwight McGlothern. Khyree Jackson’s death was tragic both on and off the field – we’re due a little good Karma.

Dallas Turner is an immediate force and earns DROY and makes other teams sick for passing on him.

We find a GD running game – in particular in short yardage. Tired of 3rd/4th and short being a gut-wrenching experience. Exert your fucking will on somebody and run the damn ball!

I hope Harry has one last good ride before hanging them up. He’s a 1/2 sack away from having 20 sacks and 30 int in a career. Hope he increases both of those numbers.

I hope we play competitive, spirited football all year long. That, and a bit of luck our way and I think this team could win 10 games and be a playoff team.

Or….

The wheels fall off by week 4 with Darnold, IDL and IOL continue to be turnstiles and we’re in the bottom 3rd in passing yards allowed – with a boatload of mistakes and ineptitude paving the way to an 0-5 or 1-4 start before the bye. The dreaded locker room ‘schism’ makes its way into USBank, Flores is shitcanned by November, Addison gets popped for driving drunk on an electric scooter at Mall of America and Harrison Smith gets traded to another team and wins a ring……

Watching Vikings football and watching the young core guys start to grow and meld into the system, specifically on the defense. Also the unknown out comes, right now both our ceiling and floors could both be extreme based on some unknowns that are about to be known. As I stated at the end of last season, im more excited about 25 than 24, once JJ is starting, the breaks are off and this train is rolling. At best we have Keenum type year with Darnold, at worst, its a 5-6 win season. Enjoy the ride.

Try again.

  1. Sam Darnold turns into a good QB
  2. The offensive line gets its act together
  3. The running game gets its act together
  4. The defense leads the league in fewest points allowed
  5. The defense leads the league in fewest yards allowed
  6. The defense leads the league in turnovers
  7. The kicker makes every extra point
  8. The kicker makes 90% of his field goal attempts
  9. Yes

Pepper spray discussion below reminded me of this anecdote: Returning from archery hunting after dark, arrive at my drive way that is gated to keep horses in. My kid was also hunting that evening and his truck is at the open gate, running, door open and can of discharged pepper spray on driver’s side ground. Been having bear problems that fall and garbage can is right at the gate. I naturally think he got attacked, put headlamp on draw my .41 mag and start yelling and looking for him. Nothing. Call wife, house is about 200 yards from gate. I quickly ramble off story and tell her to grab a light and my .450 mag lever gun. When I stop rambling she tells me my son is in the shower. When getting back into his rig after opening the gate, pepper spray he carries got tangled in the seat belt and discharged right in his face. He staggered 200 yds up driveway, couldn’t call, couldn’t see his phone. His was miserable for about 4-6 hrs.

Yuck. I’ve heard of them exploding when left in a car in the summer too. At least it wasn’t a bear. You gotta watch how you wash that stuff off your face too. Don’t let the water run down to the nether regions or you will be experiencing a whole ‘nother level of burning reserved for cheap hookers.

By the time you get home you just want to wash it off and stop the burn and forget to be careful where the ‘runoff’ goes.

That’ll teach him to carry bear spray while in a truck. I keep mine attached to my belt on my right hip, that way if I go to put on a seatbelt it would be in the way and remind me to take it off.

I’ve been charged by a black bear and a moose. I drew my pistol on the moose but he stopped. The bear, I was an idiot. I heard something behind me, turned, saw the bear coming, reached for bear spray and pistol at the same time just to find they were both at camp still. Luckily he stopped at about 15 yards and went the other way. Hopefully never have first hand experience with the bite force. I’ve been close to a couple sedated grizzly bears and they’re no joke.

Walked up on a sow and cubs, real windy, I was down wind. Bears were in a rose hip patch didn’t see them. Bear charged and hit a barbed wire fence that ran through the patch. Don’t think it saw it. It was about 3 ft from me. It took off after hitting the fence. I was surprisingly calm for about 20 seconds. Then the adrenaline that was released ran my HR up to about 140.

I can’t think of revolvers as more than novelties now. They have their use and are fun to shoot, and smaller ones are good for ladies that want something simple, but it is hard to go away from 15 rounds once you have had it.

If you want a large caliber, then they make sense I guess. I wouldn’t mind having a 454, but I like the fact that I feel like I could roll through a mud puddle and my Glock will still fire all 16 rounds. I don’t get the whole, gotta have a small gun for concealed carry either. With a decent holster you shouldn’t have to. I can conceal my full size Glock just fine under a t-shirt.

I like that the Glock is so utilitarian. I like to keep my guns “nice,” but that doesn’t matter with a Glock.

Finish is wearing off from getting put in and out of the holster. Who cares. Slide got scratched. Who cares. The Glock don’t care. It just keeps eating whatever ammo it gets loaded with over and over again.

Depending on the person, I like the Glock 22 or 23 (40 caliber). You can get the same gun in 9mm, I think it’s the 19. 9mm is nice because ammo is cheap but a 40 has a little more knock down power without the recoil of going to a 45 or 10mm. There are some other good ones out there in the same price range like the S&W M&Ps. I would go to a gun store and see what feels best. The Smith and Glocks now come with some interchangeable parts for the grip too so you can adjust it some. I have to have an extra grip on mine because my fingers are so long I either release the slide or lock it while shooting if I’m not paying attention.

Can’t go wrong with a Glock 17 or 19…other manufacturers also make quality 9mm striker fired pistols so you might try a few out at the counter for fit. Keep in mind the Glocks and many others have custom handgrip inserts to size the beavertail for your hands.

The Glock 19 is pretty common for people. It is 9MM.

The only gripe I have about Glocks, is I don’t like the longer trigger pull, but it is not a deal breaker. Glocks just plain work all the time.

I know people that also have Smith and Wesson MPs, also in 9MM. One of my coworkers got rid of his in 40 caliber version, though. It was too snappy for him.

Another coworker has a Springfield Hellcat that he really, really likes. He liked it so much he convinced another coworker to get one, and he likes it more than his SW MP.

Those are three you could look at that are manageable and affordable.

I also hear good things about the Sig Saur P365X, but I have never tried one.

Glock has done lots of tests to prove their reliability. They buried one in the mud for a few months, took it out, hosed it off and fired 100 rounds with no jams. Disassembled one, sprayed it with degreaser, put it back together, fired 100 rounds, no jams. There’s only something like 25 parts as well. There’s a reason most law enforcement agencies go with em. When I pull the trigger, I want to know it’s going to go boom no matter what.

The last conceal/carry class I attended had a bunch of different pistols there. I could not believe how many of the people had failures just firing 10 rounds three times. I didn’t really take note what models they had, though. They definitely weren’t Glocks, that’s for sure.

I just bring a .22 to that class because I am with my wife and don’t want to screw around with the firing portion. I just go up and plink my rounds and get out of there.

I remember these convos from the DN days. I’d mention bearspray and Warrior would always advocate carrying a handgun…as did Kodiak. Good times.

Not equivalent scenarios but when I was 17 I had a bull unexpectedly charge when my back was turned. When I first heard the stomp I glanced over my shoulder and time slowed down…that bastard was moving and I just had time to leap the fence in what seemed a single bound before he hooked me (plus I think he was turning to avoid barreling into the fence). I honestly cannot imagine in the panic of that situation drawing a pistol let alone getting a shot off – where are you going to aim on a 1500 pound bull when all you really perceive is a big ass animal bearing down on you.

Bear spray is nice assuming the bear isn’t four feet away as it gives you an option. Put a bullet into the chest of a bear and your options are pretty limited to hoping like hell it decides to run away rather than decimate the human that hurt it.

Oddly enough, I have hiked several hundred miles in the Beartooths and have never encountered a bear, as in I’ve never laid eyes on one. Maybe my eyes are bad. I have run into fresh scat from time to time which prompts me to carry the spray in my hand for awhile. I purposely am far from stealthy, jangling tools hanging from carabiners, dog has a backpack on with water bottles gurgling away, etc. For that matter, they recommend keeping your dog on a leash but who can do that for a twelve mile hike up and over deadfall, rock fall, etc? I figure the dog will lead the bear in a big circle ending up right where I’m standing.

Black bears typically aren’t a problem and I’ve never worried about them that much. In general, black bears are more predatory and griz are more territorial. A griz will charge or bluff charge just to tell you to leave his turf. I’ve always been told that if you get charged by a black bear it’s because he plans on eating you. Glad I got lucky and he decided I was too skinny to make a good meal.

Just an opinion here. Think if an old white guy, dressed like a dumb, started acting poorly, he’d get throw out. Now, if one of theses “newer” type persons misbehaviors, there’s more tolerance for fear of – lots of things.

Also if a dumb white guy was doing that people wouldn’t feel the need to say “a dumb white guy” did blah blah blah, they’d just say “some idiot…” or something like that. There is not reason to add the “Butch” part if it has nothing to do with the action.

Been there – real world. Old white guy misbehaves – out the door. Old black women acts up – it is handled more carefully.

No. Ran a rather large outfit with numerous retail storefront locations. We never allowed our counter help to be mistreated. Customer would get one warning, and then the manager would ask them to leave if they didn’t comply.
No one has a right to go into any type of establishment and mistreat the working staff.

Yeah, there is a season of life for it, and then it isn’t the same.

I had to quit because I lost a step in the outfield. I loved chasing down flyballs. Making outfield catches is one of the most pure feelings ever. Nothing else exists once that ball is in the air and heading your way.

Plus, my eyes got bad. I started losing the ball when it got within ten feet of me. Lost all confidence that it wasn’t going to miss my glove and hit me in the face.

I hate the outfield. I successfully avoided it for the last 15 or so years but got roped into it this summer for a tournament and again last night. I should have missed a few easy ones on purpose but instead caught some harder ones so now I’m worried people are going to try and get me to play outfield more. I prefer pitching and 3rd.

My noodle arm never got me into too much trouble because I caught everything in my area, even stuff that shouldn’t have been catchable, so guys always had to tag-up on me. Then I could usually get it to a cut off man and minimize the damage of having a noodle arm.

I remember one night the other team made comments about my noodle arm, and it ticked me off into a new level of catching everything, and I took great pleasure in beating them.

Still, the niftiest catch I ever saw was a left fielder running in on foul ball. He sprinted in, jumped to the top of the fence, held himself there with one hand and then swiped DOWNWARD with his glove to snag the ball as it was dropping below the level of the fence.

That was crazy.

Nice. We had a guy rob a home run last year in left center. He hit the fence in stride and his foot was at the top of the fence in two steps. Looked pretty cool, but was totally unnecessary though since the other team had already used up their home runs.

When I played, I was basically utility man.
Whatever position needed a spot, it was me.

I outwardly stated that anything is fine except 1st base and catcher. Since I was good, it made no sense to even put me in either of those spots.

I played mostly outfield in my younger days, and infield as I got older.

My favorite part about playing was doing a pop single to right, and just continue running the bases. I made it to third often. Almost always a double.

I miss playing. But my body doesn’t.

My biggest problem is that I’ve played too much infield so my first step is always forward and I get burned in the outfield. Pop fly or line drive in the infield, I’m good.

DE Viking
Reply to  bowbunch

Definitely different tactics for infield and outfield. For the infield, I just tried to stay quick with my feet on the pitch. Not forward or backward. Just moving feet to keep me mentally ready.

Now I remember my greatest catch, that I will regal people with…

I was in center field. A guy hit one of those low level screamers at me that was also a worm ball. I immediately knew it was going over my head, so I turned and sprinted back. First I looked over one shoulder, and the ball looked to be going the other way. Then I looked over my other shoulder, and the ball seemed to be going back that other way. I could not get a bead on it for whatever reason.

Finally, a the last moment, I spun around and backpedaled. One problem: the ball was coming on the side away from my glove hand.

“YEAH, BURNED HIM!” I heard one of the players on the opposite team yell.

Then I figured, well, I can at least reach out and swat the ball out of the air with my bare hand, so it doesn’t roll all the way to the fence.

So I shoot out my bare hand. The ball smacks into my palm and starts dropping to the ground. At that point, I think, while still backpedaling, hmmm…why don’t I just catch it with my barehand then. I should have just done that to start with…

So then I pluck the ball out of the air with my bare hand in a downward swipe.

Batter out!

Awesome memory play there!

I can remember a couple plays where running in from right field and sliding for a diving catch.

Or turning an unassisted double play.

I never played much baseball or softball, growing up. But my son played from the time he was 4 to present, 25 years old. In youth baseball he played 2nd base.

He was in a tournament, probably 5th or 6th grade and he gets a slow roller coming at him. The batter has some speed to him, so my son scoops the ball with his glove, goes between the legs to his throwing hand and throws the kid out at 1st.

His team ended up winning the tournament and that play was a momentum changer for the day.

Pepper spray effects the sprayer as well.

You try to get close enough to get it in their face (incapacitates all but the most dedicated or mentally ill) but everyone in the area is effected by it.

C/S or Teargas can be used for large groups if you can deploy it well and make sure you ‘upwind’ of it.

We never had access to ‘cattle prods’ so I have had no training on the use of those.

Also some officers would ‘prank’ their partners and spray them on purpose. That never happened to me but have been accidentally sprayed during an incident when partner had bad aim and the inmate moved fast.

Plus ‘accidental discharges’ happen when everyone is wearing a quart sized canister on their belts.

The Sgt later admitted she aimed at our faces because she didn’t like the attitude of some of the people in the group.
She did admit we handled it better than expected but there was no ‘task’ we had to complete afterwards.

We had multiple types of Pepper Spray grenades, the ‘burning type’ could not be used indoors as it could start fires and it would actually use up the oxygen in a small room/cell.

Small ‘popping’ types we could use in a cell.

I’m gonna VOTE RFK if I can. Not even sure if I can in SD. But truly my vote in SD doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter who runs under the Republican ticket this state is gonna vote Red. It’s disgusting. I had a co-worker who is a very devout Christian conservative but a real one, not a blind sheep, had her parents tell her they are voting for Trump because he’s a good Christian man (assuming he was because he is on the Republican ticket). She had to explain to them, no, no he isn’t. Just like Dems who assumed Obama was some kind of peaceful president… the dude drone striked (struck?) more innocent people than any president in history. This is why I hate party lines, people are blinded to reality. It’s disgusting and breeds corruption.

Good and fair answer.
But as we say down south, when you’re ass deep in allegators, it’s not time to worry about draining the swamp. Our political system is what it is at this point. And as a country, it is where it is at this point.
And it’s not about voting the best of the best, or even the best of the worst, but perhaps what direction we go in from here. And there are fundamental differences here.

Sigh… It exists, the Republicans have a vested interest in making it harder for some demographics to vote and it has been documented and has happened, it’s easy to find examples, go for it if ya want.

Dems have a vested interest in Tom Fuckery with voting as well. neither is above being dirty to win. Just more proof that neither has actual moral grounds they stand one, neither gives a shit about this country or you or me. Just winning, that is all that matters. And we can’t keep this shit from happening because Dems go, “My side doesn’t do voter fraud ever” which is wrong it’s provably wrong. But the wool has been pulled over their eyes. Pubs go, “My side would never and has never done any kind of voter suppression!” Which too is very provably wrong.

Prior the training camp and the preseason, the Minnesota Vikings were ranked 23rd in ESPN’s power rankings. Fast forward to J.J. McCarthy’s injury, the signing of Stephon Gilmore, and the Vikings going 2-0 in the preseason — Minnesota still slots in at No. 23 in the latest power rankings.

so speaking of the republican vs democrat blah blah blah…

went on a walk with the family last night, walked by a house in my neighborhood that had a Harris/Walz sign and here is what it said:

“watch out for your neighbors, don’t be WEIRD”

so, this sign could be read in many different ways. I’m ASSUMING it’s supposed to mean like…help your neighbors, be a good neighbor, but then the “don’t be weird” threw me a bit. Until after some googling, i realized the Walz calls Trump/Vance weird, and republicans weird….

I was going to ask the guy who was in the yard with that sign, what exactly that sign meant, but decided to enjoy the walk with my family, vs put him on the spot to explain why he thinks calling others names is acceptable…

The “joy” branding of Kamala and the “weird” branding of Vance are mean-girl level tactics. No substance for policy because they know it will be torn to shreds and the only shot to win is to reshape the image of the opponent.

Went to AFB yesterday morning for grocery shopping. At the same time a the bank in the small town just outside the base was being robbed. After a chase stopped by a PIT maneuver on the interstate the guy was caught and the money recovered.

See that stuff in SoCal all the time, don’t expect it in Idaho.

Crime is everywhere.

I used to live in Twin Cities and complained about traffic.
I live in rural Delaware and the traffic is just as bad.
Not as many cars, but fewer roads.

It’s always something.

We used to hear police sirens several times a day back in SoCal now we might hear them once a week or two. And this town we are in is much bigger than the one where we were.

So more a case of amount of crime vs the lack of crime I guess.

Any highlights from the rap concert, I mean DNC last night? I had to quit watching after Lil John performed unfortunately.

I am sure you referred to the RNC as the Trailer Park Trash concert because of Kid Rock performing right? Naw, it’s only the left doing these shallow appeals to the masses, per the usual the right would never do such a thing.

You regard republicans as trailer trash?
I thought they are for the evil rich.

Hay I thought the Clintons were trailer park trash, and millionaires too.
And poor poor Bernie, was an absolute nothing for decades, runs for President, and is now a millionaire.

Are you saying he was referring to Dems as a rap? I was saying Kid Rock’s musical genre is Trailer Park Trash. Not the people ya dingus!

Not sure what onceb4idie’s point was.

But you called republicans trailer trash for listening to Kid Rock.

RNC as the Trailer Park Trash concert because of Kid Rock performing right?

I didn’t know the genre of Kid Rock was officially trailer trash.
What other musicians fit the “trailer trash” genre?

I came across a bunch of Kid Rock jokes awhile back. They were pretty funny.

My favorite was “Kid Rock is the soundtrack of copper theft” or something to that effect.

he called it a “rap concert” the word rap being used as the genre of music. Truly Kid Rock is just pop, sometimes it’s Pop Hip Hop, Pop Rock, Pop Country, depends on the song. I was making fun of Kid Rock and his shitty music not the people while also pointing out I doubt Onceb4 boiled down the RNC as just a shitty Kid Rock concert. You guys are so offensive toward one side then not oddly enough VERY defensive about your side… shocking.

I was just curious as to why you called him trailer trash. Your words.

I’m no kid rock fan. I can’t even tell you what his number 1 song or album is/was. So you are completely wrong that I was offended.

Not shocked by you at all. You are a one way street, most of the time.

I never said you were offended. I said you were on the offensive towards one side while completely defensive about the other side. But facts be damned.

Funny how nobody wanted to touch the actual hypocrisy I pointed out… interesting right?

I don’t care what his beliefs are, but I will say that he puts on a good show. I’ve seen him twice and he doesn’t disappoint. Always has a couple of hotties up on stage with him dancing to the songs also.

I like when they blare the “Born in the USA” anthem (as when Harris got the requisite number of delegates). As someone NOT born in the USA I sometimes think that people listening to that song think it is a fiery pro American anthem.

The irony in Bernie’s speech was amazing. The crowd cheered as he said that the elites in both parties should not be able to simply install somebody, including in primary elections. All while they are spending the week doing just that after doing the same thing 4 years ago and 8 years ago.

She is way hotter than the male so I will allow it in this case as long as it is not the back of my head she is aiming at.

Maybe she was busy breast feeding, all the top agencies (Secret Service) do that on duty.

I think you would just need the right ‘inspiration’, and a lot more recovery time of course.

As Toby Keith said ‘I’m not as good as I once was but I’m as good once as I every was’. It was even in the video.
