Vikings blog logo

Happy Tuesday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation. As always, remember to be cool to one another.

I’m sitting here watching the Chiefs-Eagles. The Chiefs defense is absolutely smothering the Eagles offense. It’s midway through the third quarter, and the Eagles have only scored 7. It’s too bad the Vikings didn’t pull that one out on Sunday, the NFC front-runners are all showing signs of weakness. Hopefully KOC and the gang can figure out a way to put together a complete game offensively with Dobbs.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

Dobbs is holding down the fort at the moment, but Jaren Hall also looked pretty good in the small amount of playing time he’s gotten. Choosing from Hobbs, Hall, and Mullens, which QB do you feel is the best option to be the Vikings QB for the remainder of 2023?

Minnesota Vikings News:

SI.com has Vikings snap counts versus the Broncos.

Vikings.com has a Vikings @ Broncos week 11 rehash, and Kevin O’Connell offers updates on Justin Jefferson, Ty Chandler’s role, and Joshua Dobbs.

The Broncos’ Kareem Jackson was banned (again) for (another) dirty hit, this one on Josh Dobbs on Sunday, per ESPN.

The Chargers’ Joey Bosa is likely headed to the IR with an ankle sprain, according to NFL.com. Ouch. That team was already struggling, this won’t help any.

The Jets have demoted Zach Wilson to QB3 and gave the starting job to Tim Boyle, while Trevor Siemian will be Boyle’s backup, according to ESPN. Wow, not even gonna let him be the backup, ouch. Wilson was the second overall pick in 2021, and has now been benched three times in the last 13 months.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Wouldn’t mind seeing some Hall. We need a plan going forward. QB is huge.

Dobbs is likely the guy going forward barring injury and/or abysmal QB play. I’d like to see Hall too.

“I see him every day in practice”

The coaches pretty much know by now what they have with all the QB’s. There has been a push in the NFL for the last 10 years for “mobile” QB’s. A guy who can do all the QB stuff, but also add an element to your offense with his running ability.

Clearly KOC sees Dobbs as more than a scrambler. The play with Hock under center handing off to him illustrated that to all. He sees Dobbs as QB/RB hybrid.

I don’t know if KOC wants a hybrid QB going forward or not, but NFL teams are moving in that direction.

Not sure what to think going forward. We are not SB contenders. Like to see some of Hall. Want more of Chandler and less of Mattison. Not sure what i think of KOC anymore.

I am not giving up on the Owl dream yet….simply because we haven’t been beaten badly by the “elite” teams….means we can play with anyone.

But if I see more games like that out of Dobbs I will start to agree with you.

QB situation aside, we are far better team this year than last. Even with our defense still learning we hung with the Eagles, had a shot at Chiefs, and beat the 49ers. Those are three of the best in the league.

I hate prime time games. I don’t know how those of you in the less exalted time zones can stomach those late starts. this is really interesting.

i would love to see like each teams that are in the lucky side of things, like their top 3 or 4 luckiest plays and then the teams in the bottom half, their top 3 or 4 unluckiest…

i know the vikings unluckiest….a sure interception that bounces off their helmet and directly into opposition hands for a td….

KOC seems to get into his head sometimes….

an obvious spot to go for it, be aggressive, get points before half (especially when denver gets the ball to start the 2nd half)

but then goes for it on a risky risky fake punt (perhaps it wasn’t risky considering the formation denver had, chandler could have crab walked for a first down), but at least the field position made it risky no matter what…

cruises in the first half (against saints) then takes foot off gas and gets super conservative…

he is hot and cold

Vikings lead by 6 with 2 mins left, Bears return a Dobbs fumble for a TD, Vikings get ball, drive down to the Bears 9 with 6 seconds left, Ingram gets called for a false start on the FG attempt, Vikings have no timeouts and the game ends with a 10 second runoff, Vikings lose by 1.

Thought I had on the way to work this morning. Mind you, this was before coffee. We’ve seen what a mobile QB can do in KOC’s offense. So, with the Bears in line for 2 top 5 draft picks, if they were to draft a QB high, should the Vikings try to bring in Fields for cheap and see if his troubles are just because he is stuck in a shit organization? You could bring Kirk back on a 1 or 2 year deal potentially or just roll with Fields/Hall/Rookie.

Why not do both? I’d like to see Hall get some play this year. If he looks good, great, draft somebody anyway. If he looks horrible, look to Kirk/Fields and draft a rookie. Rook can come in as the 3rd guy and learn/earn his way up the depth chart. Also leaves you with more flexibility should the guy you want to draft be unattainable.

I’m talking 2nd or 3rd string and see if there is something salvageable there or at least have a backup with skills and starting experience, if it’s cheap. Don’t get stuck in only drafting one or only extending Kirk or only signing somebody. Do all three and keep Hall. Take more shots.

Kirk is your starter and you have a guy on a rookie contract and a reclamation project. Kirk will not be around that much longer one way or another. If you end up with a stud rookie, great it’s his time. If you are able to revive somebody like a Fields then you have trade capital while also having a second insurance policy should Kirk get hurt again or retire and the rookie sucks or isn’t ready.

The main thing there is I think Dobbs is what he is. Fields has a higher ceiling from a physical skills point and could just be a product of an inept organization. Dobbs and Fields are pretty similar to me other than Fields is more physically gifted and doesn’t know how to fly a rocket.

I started down this because the more I thought about it, the more I think the Vikings will not draft a QB this year. The general assumption/hope has been that they won’t. I was trying to brainstorm a path forward assuming they re-sign Cousins and do not draft one.

It;s a nice discussion. I actually think (if Cousins gets healthy), it will come down to what the Vikings want to do with their offense. Kirk was playing really well and so has Dobbs.
My simplistic thinking – Do you want a Stafford or a Murray type offense. Their are tradeoffs to both and somebody smart at Vikings HDQ;s will figure it out.

@Dobbs is a pants shitter, on prime time he had 2 turnovers, 2 muffed snaps, and on 4th down on our last series he didn’t throw it in the area code of any of our receivers@

Seriously, I believe Dobbs is what he is, a highly athletic, intelligent QB with below average arm talent. His ceiling is Case Keenum, not that we can’t when with that, but that is what he is. I do think if we our considering moving forward with him next year we should trade JJ and Addison, you don’t need stud receivers if you are seldom going to throw for over 250 a game.

But for now, there is a lot of season left, let’s enjoy the ride.

He sure ain’t no Josh Allen. But read Mahomes lead league with completions of 20 plus yards beyond line of scrimmage. And Cousins was second in the league – like 3000 of his 4000 plus yards .
Seems like the arm is OK enough.
Keenum does not have a very good arm and haven’t seen Dobbs enough to know.

I get the idea of trading JJ in that situation, but you don’t trade a good WR on a rookie contract. I don’t think they’ll bring Dobbs back next year, they know what he is. My gut tells me that if Kirk’s recovery is on track they will extend him before the new league year and all of his 28 mil ded cap hits the books for next year. I don’t really care one way or the other as far as Kirk or Dobbs being here next year, I just want them to draft a QB early.

Kirk will get an extension. Nobody is going to sign him to a long term deal with the achilles injury and nobody but the Vikings will sign him before August. By then all he would be able to do is go in as a backup or wait for another QB to get hurt in training camp. Kirk’s only viable option for a starting gig is MN.

DE Viking

Correct.
The gamesmanship comes at the new league year date in March.
Kirk could say eff you and not sign anything forcing the Vikings to eat all the void years 2024. But if Kirk does that, KAM will low ball him even more.

Still think Kirk retiring might be higher odds than him signing a low rent deal with anybody.

Yeah, if they don’t work out an extension by the new league year I don’t see him wearing purple and gold next year and he might be forced into retirement via lack of contract offers. If he truly wants to continue playing then he needs to work out an extension with the Vikings. Other than that he will at best end up a journeyman bridge QB for a couple of years like Rivers or Ryan.

If he was healthy, sure, but he won’t be able to pass a physical until summer. At that point he will have missed OTAs and a lot of time to learn a new offense. Is a new team going to sign him to lead a new offense without the offseason to prepare and while also risking a set back and him never getting on the field? The Vikings have 28 million incentives to extend him. Nobody else has any incentive to sign him until he’s healthy.

Let’s see. Hall – 3 series. A bit overwhelmed series against GB – understandable. First series against Atlanta shakey – understandable(first start). Second series, looked good but got knocked out. Not much there to evaluate.

The fumble was poor ball security, he was already getting stripped by another defender and the ball was coming out, if not already out, by the time the “torpedo” hit came. The int wasn’t a poor decision, he got hit as he threw, which happens. Picks aren’t the issue, he leads the NFL with 14 fumbles this season and is on pace to end up with the second most fumbles for a season in history, though he probably won’t get to Culpeppers most ever in a season at 23. For perspective, Fields is also a fumble machine and led the NFL last year with 16, Dobbs may very well pass that mark on Sunday.
