Around Here

We had a great night bird hunting last night. Fishing buddy, kiddo, and I went out for a couple hours and we got a couple birds. We saw a bunch more, but only got shots off a couple times. A lot of the birds were skittish, getting up & flying whenever we got within 100 yards (we didn’t have a dog along on this hunt), and some of them sat tight. I almost stepped on the first bird we shot, I walked right by him & he flew up when I was five yards past him & flew behind me. There were a ton of birds, more than I’ve seen in years, so I’m excited for the rest of bird season, it should be a lot of fun. Hopefully kiddo can shoot his first bird, he didn’t get a shot off tonight, but he’ll be ready next time, he wants to go again tomorrow. I think he’s hooked. I can’t wait for the pheasant & wild rice soup, I’m guessing that’s what we’ll make for Thursday’s game.

Football Stuff

The Ravens are beating up on the Buccaneers as I write this, I think the Ravens have this one in the bag. The Cardinals are in a close match with the Chargers, hard to say who’ll win that one, it should be close. Watching the rest of the league, I’d have to say that the Ravens, Chiefs, Lions, and Vikings are the best four teams in the NFL. The Ravens are stout, that rushing attack is fierce.

I’m as anxious as anyone for the Vikings to find an upgrade or upgrades at the interior O line. Ingram is our weakest link, and Bradbury is only slightly better. That being said, as bowbunch pointed out, that is often easier said than done. That’s true, but the pool of players to choose from should be large because it won’t take a whole lot to upgrade from Ingram, according to PFF. Ingram is currently ranked 71st in the NFL (out of 78 total guards who met the minimum snap count) in overall grade, and 73rd at pass blocking. Ingram’s PFF pass blocking grade is 35.8, which is bad. Again, these rankings are from PFF, so grain of salt, but the eye test seems to agree with this, as he’s been unpleasant to watch. Let’s hope the brilliant people in the Vikings front office can work some magic. Like bow said, the team doesn’t have much draft capital to use to go get someone, but maybe they can give up a guy like Jordan Addison? They’re talking about moving him after the season anyway. I don’t know, there are no perfect answers, but going with Ingram for the rest of the year isn’t a perfect answer, either.

Question of the day:

Which player would you like to see the Vikings pursue in order to replace Ingram, or do you think the Vikings should roll with Ingram? Something else? Let us know in the comments.

Vikings/NFL News and Updates:

From Vikings.com, the Vikings @ Rams week 8 injury report. Also, the week 9 Vikings vs. Colts game has been flexed to Sunday Night Football.

Someone over at SI.com thinks the same way most of us do. They say that the Vikings should bench Ed Ingram and start Dalton Risner. I don’t think they’ll get much argument around here, Ingram is the weak spot on the team, upgrade if you can, IMO.

Tough week for the 49ers. Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL/MCL against the Chiefs, and Deebo Samuel has been hsopitalized with pneumonia & fluid in his lungs, updates from NFL.com.

Your final NFL week 7 scores and highlights, courtesy of CBS Sports.

Media Selection:

Hey, here’s another interesting compilation from AJ at the Why Files. I love these episodes, he does a great job of exploring all sides of an argument & being open to other ideas. I also love Hecklefish, I think he’s hilarious. Anyway, enjoy!

  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

McDonald’s says they have no record of Harris working there. If true, that’s a pretty blatant lie.

Yeah, she made this story up when campaigning and pandering to minimum wage workers. She failed to list her claimed McDonald’s gig on a job application back in the 1980’s. She was asked to list every position she’d held over the previous decade, and curiously neglected to include the fast food job she now says she had during that time frame. She told a lie for a political end. Pretty clear to me.

Just politics IMO.

Almost anything Trump says will provoke the press to take one sentence, out of context, and proclaim him a liar.
Joe has been Irish, Italian, a truck driver, football star, academy prospect and no one seems to care.
So it’s no real surprise that Harris could claim anything and get away with it.

It’s clear to many that the mainstream media is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the left, and they have purposely misinformed (lied) to the public in order to influence elections in favor of their preferred party. We, the American people, should bring suit against them for their lies and put them out of business.

Interesting conversations on Sports Talk Radio this morning. Rumors of the Rams wanting to trade away Cooper Kupp and possibly Matt Stafford, as well.

The Chiefs picked up DeAndre Hopkins. More firepower for them…

We’re good, cleaned up all the debris in the yard, and cleared the downed tree. Waiting on the crew to come fix the lanai. Golf course behind us is still flooded. The lake was all the up to the lanai, and the cart path was under about three feet of water. The sand traps fronting the green were also submerged. Today (two weeks later) the water is out of the traps, and cart path is still under about a foot and a half of water. Half of my back yard is still under water too. The alligator has been seen in several folks’ back yards as well.

So a first round, and two fifth round picks… not real strong there.

I remember we traded our second, third and fourth round picks in the 2024 Draft in exchange for the pick used to take Dallas Turner.

We traded our sixth and seventh round picks to the Browns in the Smith deal in 2023.

I think we expect to be awarded one compensatory pick though based on our free agency comings and goings this past year.

Now you’ve hit on one that might actually have a guard to give, but I have a hard time thinking Shanny would. One of their starters is a rookie (RG, Dominick Puni) so I doubt they move him. Their starting LG is Aaron Banks. He is 27 and in the last year of his rookie deal. The Shanny system is similar enough that he might actually work here and he wouldn’t have a big cap hit to the 9ers. Not sure how they feel about the depth behind him or if he’s any good. If they don’t plan on re-signing him this year, which is possible with the cash they are going to have to give Purdy, might be able to get him for a late round pick. I would still be leery to give up a player unless they’ll take Nailor or Powell. The Vikings did bring back Jackson so maybe Nailor for Banks would be possible. (Also, Nailor? I barely know her)

Now that we are close to halfway through the season, I would like to see these changes to the new kickoff rules:

  1. If you kick it through the endzone – Return team starts at the 30
  2. If downed in the endzone – Return team starts at 25
  3. If ball is caught in the safety zone and downed – Return team starts at the 20
  4. If the ball lands in the safety zone and is retrieved in the endzone – Return team must return ball

I carry something called “avoidance” or if all else fails, a “rock” with which to persuade the rattlesnake to proceed on his merry way, or if close to my house bonk him on the head until I can retrieve a “shovel” with which to decapitate and bury him.

I find them very lightweight and unlikely to result in my toe getting blown off.

You should see my chocos heads snap when a rooster gives that gate swinging cackle on the other side of the creek. I don’t let them run out there for two reasons – they’ll take a meandering path back home through the muddiest part of the creek and they scare off the roosters that we will subsequently hunt when the master deems it is time.

That brings up an interesting question. Straw poll I wonder how many married couples keep their finances separate to the point that one spouse has no idea what the other spends any given month.

Us – my wife and I opened a joint chequing account two months after we started to date and completely merged our finances within a year…but it still took me three more years to convince her to marry me. All our financial decisions down to hunting gear are made jointly.

During younger and leaner times we had a rule any purchase over $50 had to be discussed.

Our finances are one. (Just like our union). For me I always thought having my “own” money spoke against a complete giving of myself to my wife. None the less, don’t fault others for doing it different. Most know what works best for their own marriages.

Same as SkolfromMT…we merged our meager finances immediately after getting married..

We don’t discuss every single purchase but anything significant (over 200 dollars or so) is generally discussed.

We do have a budget that we monitor and track, so if one of us were to purchase something outlandish it would be noticed.

I had a pretty good week. I continue my slow but steady rebound from bottoming out. I really only got burned by one pick this week. Since it is Tuesday, I can talk about it. All I have to say is in my best Captain Kirk angry shouting voice:

KIIIIIIIIIIIRK!

Just when you start to believe in Cousins and put points on him, he burns you. What was up with that spastic sack-fumble? Kirk has been playing only roughly one year less than Harrison Smith. Just curl into a ball and give up in that situation. Don’t offer up the football in the hopes the defensive player will have mercy. Whatever. I don’t hate Kirk, but I both loathe and harbor disdain for him…

(I just realized the irony of Captain Kirk screaming “KIIIIIIIIIRK!”)

Here is a league overview:

Little Fishin’ is at the bottom, but he continues to be plucky and determined to move up, despite missing some weeks.

Freezy and JacksonVike are hanging out in 9 & 10. I remember when those guys were up higher. Truly, Pick ‘Em League is a harsh mistress. You think things are fine, and then you come home to see the mailman, milk man and garbage man lined up at the door, ready to turn your world upside down.

I have quietly crept into eight place, ninja-style, which is fun for me because I had a fascination with ninjas as a child. I even got a book on ninjas for my birthday once, and I had a throwing star.

4-7 is a cluster rat king-style (if you aren’t familiar with a rat king, it is a clump of rats stuck together by knotted tails. Google it. It is disgusting but safe.). Bowbunch, Surly Viking, NoDakRube and DE Viking are all within five points of each other. I don’t even know who to cheer for since I hate them all for being ranked higher than me.

Really, you could almost attach I’d rather be fishing into that group, as well. He is only 10 points above them. This is I’d rather be fishing’s first week in a podium position. Where did that kid come from all of a sudden? Surely, Vegas bookies will be knocking on his door soon and telling him to start shaving points.

We also have a very tight race in the 1 & 2 spots. Only two points separate Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold and Kirk is still good, but that is what we like to see: lots of jostling and pressure where one single bad pick can spiral a person out of control!

Iconoclast Picks of the Week go to Surly. He was the only one to gamble on NE over Jax. Yet, we have a good smattering of Iconoclasts to join the party this week. DE Viking and JacksonVike picked Cle over Cin. Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold and Bowbunch picked Miami over Indy. DE Viking and Surly picked Giants over Eagles and me and Surly picked TB over Bal for some strange reason.

Genius Picks of the Week go to Freezy and Bowbunch. They were the only ones to pick Arizona over the Chargers.

Everyone got the Bills and Washington picks right. Chargers and Atlanta (KIIIIIIIIIRK!) burned the most people.

We should also mention that me, Kirk is still Good and DE Vikings were the only ones to pick the Lions over our beloved Vikings. What does that mean? It means we can be trusted to make dispassionate decisions. We should probably be put in charge of nuclear missile silos.

In closing…

My picks are in and the only one I may change is Chicago Washington, depending on Daniels injury.

I sort of have my picks done. I usually like to let them marinate a bit in my subconscious, but now the true nature of teams is starting to reveal itself a bit more.

QotD – Fire Ingram. Start Risner, draft replacement or coach up the current backups to take over next season. Trading during the season for IOL would be rough.

Starting to hate football again.

AotD: I agree, I don’t think there is much we can do with Right Guard at this point in the season. I would put Risner at RG and see what happens. I would expect a huge move in the off season to sign a good RG.

We’re 5-1 against the toughest schedule in the league and our only loss was by a few pts and you hate Football? You need football Therapy my friend.

I needed Godwin to score to win on Underdog. Instead, my account is now at zero and I am done.
Also failing in the pick em and FF things.

Combine the prognostication failures with the Vikings losing, and I am ready to just read or play video games.
