Vikings @ Bears

As a fan, you approach this game with the mindset of “This is a divisional road game in Chicago, where it is very tough to win. Just get a win and I’ll be happy”. Even though you have the perfect mindset going into the game, and even though the Vikings did win the game, the Vikings still managed to make you a little mad (after nearly giving you a heart attack). I get it, the game should have never gone to overtime, and the Vikings seemed like they missed a dozen opportunities to put the game away. However, the Vikings DID get a win on the road in Chicago, and they DID move their record to 9-2.

Offense

The Bears defense is a good defense, and the Vikings offense did a good job against them. The Vikings ran the ball very well, and Darnold did a good job of spreading the ball around and of avoiding turnovers. The Bears defense seemed focused on shutting down JJ, and they did a good job of limiting his impact. Putting all that attention on one person opened up opportunities for the other Vikings playmakers, and Darnold got the ball to them. Addison racked up a career-high 160 receiving yards, and Hockenson picked up 114 yards. Besides the Jones fumble at the goal line on the Vikings opening drive, the team didn’t cough up the ball again.

Defense

The defense started off strong, but then faltered a bit at the end and allowed the Bears a chance to come back. I thought the D would do more to harass Williams and force mistakes, but they just didn’t quite do that. In the end, they did enough to win.

Nick Muse was released today, on his birthday.
Suspect they will use the spot for DL Murphy coming off of IR.

Dr. J? Nice!

My day is winding down, I feel I lack street cred. When my younger choco brought me back the lone rooster I shot last week, he was so excited he pawed me in the eye while I was squatting down praising him and stroking the rooster (yup I stroke the rooster a lot when I get my hands on it). It looks like I scoped myself except it’s my left eye and I shoot right handed. Since my eye was already fugged up I decided to sizzle and burn off a little half cm or so growth on my cheek just below the eyelid. Figured surely someone would comment today that I looked like I had just emerged from a cage match but nary a peep from anyone.

Ham’s Grandfather passed away on early Sunday morning.

When the team landed in Chicago on Saturday, Ham was allowed to take a bit of a break from the team to go and visit his ailing grandfather in the Chicago area. He got the opportunity to spend about five hours with him prior to having to come back to the team and get prepped for Sunday’s game. On Sunday morning, Ham got word that his grandfather had passed away, news that must have been devastating for him to hear, but he got out on the field and did his job.’

My grandfather (Papa) was a huge influence in my life, an example of how men should behave. Condolences to CJ Ham and his family.

NewScum stated that he will replace the CV tax credit if DT axes it as expected when he takes office. Since Calif doesn’t have the $7.500 per they will have to reinstate a tax that expired last year.

BTW I found it odd that in the postgame discussion the Vikings bragged that they exploited a weakness in the blocking lineup (spaced too far apart) and Santos’ low trajectory which allowed them to block a FG, basically a carbon copy of the Packers doing same the week before. I assume that Chicago would have figured it out on their own but still wouldn’t want to help a divisional foe, unless they want the Bears to figure it out before the Lions games.

I would guess that they figured it out for the most part after the block.
They did have several successful kicks after that.
Although I did hear that Tillery was pretty close on the kick that sent it into OT so maybe not.

🔨 thoughts:

Winning on the road is tough. Happy to get the W. I’ve always thought of Soldier Field as a Vikings House of Horrors but we’ve won the last 5 in ChiTown….

Defense is gonna get burned from time to time – and at the worst moments here and there. But it’s also produced a ton of sacks and turnovers. Few things could be cleaned up for sure. But I’ll take the good that comes with the gambles of this defense.

Painted fingernails, crybaby momma’s boy and all that – Williams elusiveness and arm strength were impressive.

We really need Cam Robinson to be healthy soon. Quessenberry is a liability imo.

I saw the $5 Burger King Whopper deal on TV while watching the game yesterday. I always loved those deals when I was working at the prison, plus I love the Whopper Burgers. I would stop on my way to work, 1pm-ish, eat one for a late lunch and save the other for dinner.
It made for a nice shift once a year.
So I looked it up after the game thinking to pick some up today maybe. Scam alert! The deal is for Whopper Jrs, way less good-er.

If that is ‘the rule’ it is extremely stupid IMHO.
Both teams have access to that camera angle to the contest is equitable.
That other teams in other games don’t is irrelevant to that game.
If it is raining/snowing does that mean the game conditions have to be the same in all the games.
When the sideline staff went down and they pulled in the ‘alternate ref’ to work the sticks does that mean all the other games have to pull out their alt ref??

Ok, rant over, I feel a little better. Stupid DEI.

How did that happen (the tail)?

We are still very dry over here on the flatlands. Had a quarter inch of rain about ten days ago but no snow yet. In other words it is tough conditions for pheasant. I did take my chocos out three times last week, had a rare and picture perfect pheasant rise straight up in front of us and head arrow like with the wind directly over my head, I could finally pick out the rooster coloring as he neared the apogee about 30 yards overhead, missed with the top barrel, spun and tried again with the bottom barrel, I swear he cackled with glee.

Not sure on the tail, was out hiking he gets ahead of me sometimes and came back with 2-3 vertebrae exposed. The soft tissue was avulsed. Vet said typically they get tail hung up and then panic and pull hard.

Oh no! That sounds nasty.

This time of year I have to watch my dumbasses, they like to run down the creek and the ice is a little thin in places, more than once they’ve broken through the ice and thrash a bit until they pull themselves up on the bank. The water isn’t deep enough in most places that they could get in trouble, but I read a story in one of the hunting magazines where the author lost his yellow Lab after she broke through the ice on a slough in Miles City and drowned, despite breaking his shotgun stock trying to free her. So I like to keep them in view near the water so I would have a fighting chance to pull them out.

The Lions have the Bears twice, the Packers, Bills and 49ers….

They are playing great. But that isn’t a real easy remaining schedule. They could lose a game or two yet. I don’t have much confidence we beat them in Detroit. And it is my understanding that they would hold the tie-breaker even if we do beat them. So we need to run the table and they need to lose 2 games. Not likely.

Agreed, especially tie-breakers. But it is fun to do. So NoDakota – if we split with the lions and end up tied with them for first, the tie- breaker after head to head is divisional record (I think I have that right). If we are still tied then, it drops to common games, but both Lions and Vikes swept the AFC, so then I think it goes to strength of victory. at that point, we are likely screwed.

Our best hope is to sweep the rest of our divisional games and hope the Bears or FTP win one against Detroit

Yeah, I didn’t read the comment he was replying to. Atlanta is going to flounder and lose the division to Tampa and Kirko will be sitting at home for the playoffs.

so how about this…i’m actually gonna say something nice/good about the vikings for once!

i will say this…on our game winning OT possession/drive….we overcame 2 penalties, and one was a big holding penalty…

I really liked the play call after the holding call, get it to 2nd and manageable. I think it was a 9 yard pass to Hock, so it went from 1st and 20 to 2nd and 11. I like that alot. That’s super smart by both KOC and Darnold to not try to get all the yards back in one play. If it was a longer pass and incomplete, sitting at 2nd and 20 SUCKS…

i thought that Overtime drive had some REALLY good play calls…

Also, player of the game….

player named here
Nick Mullens

I am still washing the residual vomit from the back of my throat after watching that game. God, I can’t take it!

Darnold looked “jittery” to me. KOC definitely chatted with him about forcing the ball as he looks a bit more tentative and throws the ball away a lot. I guess that is good, but he did not run as much, is he getting beaten up and a bit sore.

The D is very prone to giving up big plays. That is disconcerting as well

But the rational side of me says any NFL win on the road is good, and any win in the division is good as well.

A few things that I use to talk myself away from the cliff:

– we are not the NYG or Jets!
– maybe we will play better against the upcoming better teams
– Thanksgiving week – time to cook, eat and drink

Darnold had a good game. He made some clutch throws when needed.

To me, and I was saying this a lot in the game thread, KOC needs to pepper in some more quick slant throws or quick, easy out routes. So many of the routes the WRs seem to run are long-developing, across-the-field crossing routes. Those are great, but we need to get 6-8 yards on easy slants every once in a while, especially on these 2nd and 10s.

agreed. We seem to rely on longer passes much more. personally, I love the 4-6 Yard completions. add a few yards of run after catch and you get longer lasting drives that wear down the defense and let’s our D rest. One telling stat from yesterday’s game. At halftime we had posted 3 nice drives, but lost time of possession to the Bears by a 2 to 1 margin

I said this last week, and was challenged a bit by a couple of people saying Levis’ plays were a fluke.

This D gives up long plays at the worst of times.

But a win is a win, and the Vikings now have a 3 game lead for a wild card with AZ coming to town

Good position to be in.

They for sure are giving up chunk passes. I tell my dad every time that it’s because they do a terrible zone coverage call. It’s even worse when they do zone and blitz. I don’t think our team has the speed to get away with that.

Press-man blitz with a safety over top is the best, imho, or even just do press-man with 2 over the top and rush 4.

I would argue, almost everyone on here said they would rather give up a couple big plays and be aggressive, than have the shell defense we had under Donnatel.

When a play breaks down and WRs play the scramble drill DBs are going to struggle to keep them covered.
The CryBaby is particularly good at those, probably because he does them so often.

That style of defense is going to be suspect to big plays. They cause a lot of hell but in hell sometimes you’ll get burnt ya know? I am ok with it, better than not being aggressive and sitting on your heals. I am most worried about… what is the status of Pace and Robinson?

The defense has been severely overrated this season. They have decent games against bad QB’s, but they are not clutch on 3rd downs at all IMO. Good teams like Detroit are going to continue to have their way with them.

I missed most of the game since I was in the woods hunting. However, I kept up by getting alerts from the NFL app and checking on here. Because of that, I knew what had already happened when I watched the condensed version of the game on NFL+ later in the evening. As I was watching, I was thinking that there should be absolutely no way that it should be tied and go into overtime. We were really in control of the game until the last 1:30. Also, with watching the condensed version you only here portions of the announcers and even then I got sick of listening to Daryl Johnson slobber all over the Bears. I used to respect his commentary, but the last couple of times I have heard him on a Vikings game he as continually talked about how great our opponent is, even though we were winning most of the time.

Sunday mornings is chore time for me…so I didn’t start the game until 1230 MST. I was about halfway through Q3 when I noticed the little recording icon/red line of the length of the game was going significantly longer than if it ended in regulation. Even when I saw thirty minutes remaining in the broadcast after the Vikings kicked the FG I refused to believe the game could somehow go to OT.

Definitely would call that a game the Bears lost, rather than the Vikings won. Blocked FG, muffed punt return, and it was still close. It is funny watching OT, it seems like every other team that I watch in OT you are just waiting for the defense to somehow stop the inexorable flow of the offense…with the Vikings you are just waiting for A. Jones to cough the ball up or Darnold to throw a deep pick.

PS why can’t we do those short crossing routes opening up the slot and TE (like we did in OT) more often? It seems like the playbook is run, screen, deep ball.

I did not see much of the game. Saw a good chunk of the first half and then turned it on in time to see the onside kick.

It appears the rule changes have really hurt the onside kick chances. That is too bad. The onside kick is one of the most exciting parts of the game.

I wonder how they can tweak the rule to get it back up to previous success percentages…

I’m just spit-balling.

Maybe make it so the ball only has to go five yards instead of 10.

Maybe allow the kicking team an extra player or two.

Maybe turn the onside kick into a tip-off like in basketball. Just set the ball on the 50 yard line. Recovery team is 10 yards from it. Kicking team is 15 yards from it. Ready. Set go.

But they got to do something if it the odds have been reduced that much. Plus, it now has to be announced, so you can’t even do the surprise onside.

Definitely needs addressing. It is is currently wrecked.

Of course, the Vikings would be the only team to have a successful onside kick done against them this season…

What I hate about the onside kicks is exactly what happened – ball accidentally bounces off player’s leg on the return team, who is locked up blocking someone. Shouldn’t be a live ball yet.

Now, if the player hasn’t been engaged yet, or makes an attempt to recover the ball, yeah – live ball.

Only the Vikings could allow a long kickoff return etc, 2 pt conversion, onside kick recovery inside of the two minute warning. I honestly don’t think this team is safe with a 16 point lead inside of two minutes with the opponent having no timeouts.
