Hey, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Since it was raining Friday and Saturday, kiddo and I decided to take a trip up to Minot (it wasn’t raining there). We go up there a few times a year, and we have a bit of a routine. We stay at the Sleep Inn, because it has a water park and is also attached to the mall. We hit the arcade at the mall, then go to the movie theater to get a tub of popcorn to bring to the room. Then we get up in the morning & hit Charlies Cafe downtown for breakfast. This is one of the best breakfast places I’ve ever been to, and we hit it EVERY time we’re in town. We also stop by Lucy’s Amusement Park on the way out of town for a fun round of mini-golf. We had a great time, as we always do.

Minnesota Vikings News:

CBS Sports looks into details of the Vikings 2023 training camp schedule.

CBS Sports looks into the biggest red flags for the 2023 contenders. For the Vikings, they list ‘the veteran exodus’ as the biggest red flag. I can see their point, the Vikings DO have a lot of new faces, especially on defense. For me, I see the change-over as necessary. I still believe that it is the correct move to make changes to a defense that has ranked among the bottom of the NFL for the past two to three years. I see no reason to desire continuity in such a disaster.

Florio at PFT looks into the latest alleged Stefon Diggs drama, and wonders if it ‘traces to Josh Allen’.

The Braves topped the Reds yesterday, moving to 23 games over .500, according to MLB.com`. Wow, what a season it’s been thus far! The Braves have the second-best record in baseball, and are the team to beat in the National League. The Twins also won yesterday, as they came back to defeat the Tigers 6-3. The win moves the Twins to one game over .500 and they remain in first place in the ELITE American League Central Division.

Here’s something with a little soul, takes me back to my days living in Mississippi. This is Johnny Taylor with Wall to Wall. Enjoy!

So I was on vacation last week, had a chance to work on the “screaming deals” the auctioneer told me I got at the farm auction (works great like new he sez).

The power washer wouldn’t start, dumped out the gas that looked like varnish and dismantled the cheap plastic carburetor as best I could and sprayed it all with carb cleaner, put in new gas and a new spark plug, fired right up.

60″ trail mower, started hard (battery at least so I wasn’t yanking away like long duck dong). Wouldn’t throttle up, blades wouldn’t engage. Gas was actually in pretty good shape. Farted around with the throttle linkage and sprayed the carburetor, changed the spark plug and filthy air cleaner, oil looked good. The short belt had popped off the guides so I got under there with monkey paws and got it back on the idler. Started it up got it throttled up and it mowed for about twenty seconds before the short belt snapped. Got a replacement generic belt at hardware store (guy warned me it might not last long) and indeed it broke quickly.

Ordered two OEM belts, took the time to remove the old long belt and check the pulley bearings, jacked it up to remove and sharpen blades. New belts came, got them installed with a minimum of fuss thanks to YouTube, now she runs great. Also welded a hitch onto it cuz it had some weird North Dakota style pin system before. Last thing I need to do is find two tires to replace ones that want to run flat and I’ll be in business.

I know you guys are jealous, you do things on vacation like go to Flathead Lake or Las Vegas, how boring.

I find it interesting to think about how different societies could have interpreted some of these scriptures. Up until very recently, no one would have thought that Wormwood could be nuclear. They had no idea what nuclear meant. Also, if you lived in Europe 85 years ago, would you think that the end of days was happening? It would really seem like it at the time.

Had a crisis this morning. Backstory the younger choco is the most food oriented dog I have ever owned, he will do anything for a piece of popcorn. On Saturday the dumbass got into a bag of flour (unopened) that I left on the bottom shelf and looked like Pacino in Scarface. Got the slipper for that transgression.

Finished breakfast and stepped out into the shop to let the dogs lick the remnants of the yogurt cup. The older choco ambles up and peacefully licks, no sign of Bubba. Huh. Oh the dumbass got into the utility room, door shut behind him. I open the door to the sight of him chewing away, had got into a full unopened box of Bar Bait and had managed to get a brick and a third (pound and a third) down his gullet. Yelled for my wife to grab the hydrogen peroxide, hustled him outside, gave him a couple of mouthfuls of that. Got the older dog locked in the studio and freaking out, called and left a message with the vet, wife said Bubba hadn’t thrown up yet, bring him back inside and he threw up the poison and his breakfast in short order, tied him outside and I call poison control while my wife is scooping the piles of vomit into the garbage. Got the mess cleaned up, vacuumed, swiffered while chatting with poison control.

The lethal dose for a dog of his size is about 800 grams. A pound is 454 grams. So he should have been okay even if he hadn’t puked it up.

Dogs I tell ya.

All of my previous dogs have been acquired at seven weeks of age and are taught food manners at that early age. I must redouble my efforts at teaching him not to counter surf or open boxes of “food” in storage.

It is tougher somewhat on the nose. But this type of surgery has come a long ways. And as DE suggests, if it’s not very deep, may require no stiches and they will simply allow to heal up from inside out.
Hope all works out well for you I’m sure it will.

DE Viking
Reply to  Mick
26 June 2023 1:07 pm

Griddles are not considered healthier than grills due to the way how cooking on them works. Unlike grills, they usually require at least a small amount of oil to cook and the grease from the food has nowhere to drip. This means the cooked food is likely to be higher in fat and calories than food cooked on a grill.

While you can slightly mitigate it by placing the food on a paper towel to wick away some of the oil, it will still have more fat content than the same food cooked on a grill.

Railroad lobbies have paid the dirty politicians to not have to adhere to safety regulations and invest in infrastructure maintenance. Rail is a very good method of transportation but like anything some percentage of profits have to be re-invested back in to the infrastructure.

Lol…it is exactly the polar opposite of what you’re saying. The sheer metric tonnage you can transport over rail is far and away the most economical and environmentally the best method of transport.

Now if you mean because theres been a lack of investment in new rails lines and safety adherence then yes its woefully under invested.

bowbunch

Have you ever dealt with having things delivered or shipped via rail? Obviously not or you wouldn’t question my statement. Railroads are unreliable and inefficient. Transport times are minimum 10x longer than trucking or pipeline, and that’s best case scenario so like 90% of the time. If you can wait indefinitely until the RRs decide to deliver your products then yes, rail is typically a cheaper option. A semi delivery of something from Billings to Minnesota for example will take about a day, if that. That same trip for the RR is about 10-14 days.

No shit Sherlock. I deal with the RR every day. Industry still relies on inputs. No inputs = no products. No level of investment is going to make it more efficient. Safe, reliable, economically beneficial, maybe, efficient no. Reliable does not equal efficient and the main reliability issues are personnel, not infrastructure.

The only option is the RR, which is part of the problem. That bridge isn’t getting repaired any time soon. Quite a bit of oil from North Dakota goes over that bridge every day on it’s way to west coast refineries. Now, you get to reroute it through a couple other rails and add a week or two transit time. At least if there was a pipeline and that had a problem, there would be rail for backup. Coal, grain, etc doesn’t have much backup option other than trucking. New cars, windmills, airplanes, all getting delayed weeks now.

It can be more efficient with more investment in rail lines so we’re saying the same thing I believe. It’s not the best option now but could be better if not for the Railroad Barons from the turn of the century who amassed wealth and political power and then sat on their profits bought Washington DC and now just collect subsidies and clear profits for life. Capitalists a love story.

bowbunch

Reply to  Lifer

It really can’t be any more efficient based on the way it works and has to be done. When you are collecting multiple products from multiple places, it takes time. That must then be combined into a train that can only go so fast and then that train stops multiple times along its trip to get more cars or drop cars, all of which takes a lot of time. With limited track, all of these movements must be scheduled in such a way as to allow traffic both ways further delaying travel. This all assumes everything is done efficiently and correctly, that cars are picked up from an industry when they are ready, they are taken to the right yard, they are then put on a train, that that train is the right one and then that train makes it to the next yard in time to catch the next switch to it’s destination.

I do believe you to be wrong about this one bow.

Currently, yes, the RR can be a big pile of shit. No doubt about it.

There is more at hand than just the RR though. Would the RR love to expand? Sure. The gubmint/people will not allow it.

Why do we have a highway system transporting people when we could have ultra efficient railroads doing so? Gubmint regulations and red tape.

Moving oil by rail is stupid especially when pipelines do exist but there is no other way to move that amount of freight that amount of distance for less.

I think the hang up here is “efficient”. I’m not talking money wise. It is the most economical way to move lots of material, that does not make it physically efficient and reliable. If you want to but something from me and you need it as soon as possible. It will be shipped via 3 trucks over 1 railcar. I could have those 3 trucks to your door before a railcar gets filled, much less shipped. If you need product, you truck it. If you can wait a month, you rail it. Unless you are a large industry and built your business around the RRs, you will still need to truck the product since you are likely not next to a switch yard as well.

What else can you move 20k+ trailing tons on less than few thousand gal of diesel fuel?

Read a study over the weekend that showed people (typically Europeans, Asians that do) as they age take daily micro naps slow the shrinking and hardening of the brain (normal occurrence as we age) by 7% to 10% compared to those that do not take naps.

Makes perfect clinical sense that the daily resting of the brain, quick dive in to rem sleep, would be immensely beneficial.
