We Got To See Dr. J!

Kiddo and I went to a fundraiser, it’s an annual event by Cross Training Ministries, a Christ-centered sports ministry based out of Bismarck. The guest speaker this year was HOF NBA legend Julius Erving (Dr. J.). He talked about growing up in New York, his path to the NBA, struggles and adversities, and how his faith helped him along the way. He’s a really funny guy, great sense of humor & came across as genuine. We had a great time, bought a couple items at the silent auction, including a framed collage of Teddy Bridgewater prints. I bid on a helmet signed by Justin Jefferson, but it went for something like $4,500, and that’s above my pay grade.

If anyone wants to donate to Cross Training, you can do so here. It’s a really cool ministry and I’m proud to support them.

Vikings Discussion

So, there’s lots of chatter out there about Daniel Jones possibly landing in Minnesota. It kinda seems like Jones & KOC are flirting. Jones says he likes KOC, KOC says he likes Jones. What next, holding hands? Just kidding. I could see the Vikings making this move. It makes sense. If Darnold goes down, the season goes down with him, because I don’t think anyone expects Mullens to lead the Vikings on a deep playoff run. I don’t think Daniel Jones will lead them on a deep playoff run, either, but I’d say his chances are higher than Mullens’. Make it happen, KAM.

Vikings News

Over at Vikings.com, Kevin O’Connell covers a wide range of topics at his Monday presser.

The Vikings waived TE Nick Muse, according to Athlon Sports.

NBC Sports says that the Vikings gave the Bears too many chances on Sunday. Thanks, Captain Obvious!

NFL News

Daniel Jones has cleared waivers and hit the open market, per NFL.com.

This is awesome. The Jets are hiring some former GMs, including Rick Spielman, to help them find a new coach and GM, according to CBS Sports. They’re hiring a former crappy GM to help them find a GM? That’s a bold move, Cotton. Let’s see how that works out for them.

Media Selection

Here’s a cool video I found on Dr. J. Enjoy!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another

I’m actually kinda pissed today. Still not entirely sure I want to share, but of late there has been no shortage of mother-daughter and mother-son drama (my stepkids). Completely f’ing ridiculous how they are teeing off on my wife (latest is essentially how dare you invite him/her to Thanksgiving at your house). I really can’t wrap my head around it as comparing the way I was raised to my stepkids is like comparing spending a month in a concentration camp to spending a month at the Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii.

Daughter sent a shitty email last night (my wife and I have a joint email) taking a few swings at her. I’m in the process of typing out a response. My wife was in tears last night. She came in for lunch just a hour ago and said that one of the recent verbal knives that was driven in by her daughter was that I had really close relationships with my (they are all female and younger than me) technologists, “oh but he is probably oblivious to what’s going on”. F me. Who says that s? I can tell you guys with 100% honesty (my wife never visits this site) that I have never ever ever ever cheated on my wife in any sense whatsoever from a proposition, caress or hand hold up to the biblical version of cheating in the 32 years we’ve been together. Just totally meant to hurt my wife.

Deep breaths.

Drama queens (and Kings) have to have drama.
They will manufacture it if they have to.
This is a ‘them problem’ not a you or your wife problem unless you let them make it your problem.
Not easy to be in the middle of, condolences.

Here is where Sam Darnold ranks in some key QB categories thru Week 12…

Passer Rating — 8th
QBR — 14th
Expected Points Added — 10th
Yards Per Attempt — 4th
PFF Grade — 9th
Adjusted Comp % — 9th
Big Time Throw % — 5th

Average rank — 8th

(Kirk Cousins average rank in those same categories — 17th)

It’s interesting isn’t it? Is Darnold actually that much better or are the weapons and the coaching a big part of it? I’m guessing a bit of both. Also I think I would rather have a Darnold that will make a bone headed throw trying to make something happen than Kirk “check it down on 4th down with the season on the line” Cousins. Lol

Theres lots of factors that go into it. And like I stated below, KOC and this Vikings scheme and environment and coaching is why Sam is doing this well. Its why Kirk did well with KOC. But thats the point. We can get just as good and occasionally better production than Kirk, for 1/3 the price and put that money into other parts of the team. Thats how you build a legit roster and go places. And its what some of us have been begging for since Jan of 2020.

Get this, I was just singing some national songs here at home. No big deal, patriotic songs. My Country ’tis of Thee, God Bless America, etc.

I then wanted to sing the national anthem but stupid me couldn’t remember the second or third line. So I asked our Google Home what the lyrics were to the national anthem. “Sorry, I don’t understand.” I asked what the words were to the USA national anthem. “Sorry, I don’t understand.” I asked what the words were to the United States national anthem. “Sorry, I don’t understand.” I told my wife, who asked it what the lyrics were to the Star Spangled Banner. “Sorry, I don’t understand.”

I then asked Google what a recipe was for chicken with ginger. It began to answer from a website. I asked what a recipe was for sautéing mushrooms in vinegar (just a random thing to make up). It began to answer from a website.

Yet Google can’t tell me what the national anthem is? Dumb.

How’s everyone liking Trump Cabinet appointments? Let me guess… They are all the biggly bestest ever. Orange daddy can do no wrong. (I’m making fun there, calm down). I wanted Trump to win, this isn’t an attack on him. Just curious. Any President is going to have appointments that make you take pause if you don’t worship a party line. But just curious everyone’s actual thoughts. The Linda McMahon one is the silliest one to me but if you want to dismantle a department you don’t put someone in there that is overly qualified and great for the department. Just like Trump did last time, he put someone in there with no real experience in a classroom but just as a way of patting her on her back for all her loyal support. I’m all for school choice and state rights, the biggest overreach of the federal government in education was No Child Left Behind which was a Bush initiative that I am sure was still the Dems fault around here (Pubs can never do wrong EVER) but it highlights the issues with federal education mandates. I just think we’re letting the fox in the hen house. It’s very obvious that the real push here from many is finding a way to have federal dollars support religious education. That’s wrong in my book and wrong as far as the constitution is concerned. If you disagree then we are just going to disagree on this. I think federal dollars pushing religion is wrong, as does the constitution. I do also worry about how that looks if you dismantle funds from public education for students who are in low income areas that are already struggling. But I am starting to feel about education like I felt about Obama Care which is even though I don’t like the idea of Obamacare, something different needs to be done. I just don’t want kids born into poverty to have an even worse chance at being educated but again what we are currently doing isn’t working either. I’m for change, but the federal government should not be funding religious education. I put some jokes in here, but I am curious how everyone is feeling about them.

I like Elon and Vivek but it is funny that you have 2 guys doing essentially the same job for a department about getting rid of waste lol.

So yeah, just curious your guy’s thoughts. We’ve already argued about the education thing a bit. So if you think the federal government should be funding religious indoctrination we are just going to disagree. But I am definitely not against education reform as long as the kids born into shit situations still have a chance at a quality education.

Differently good, unconstitutional not good. This is my worry. That in the movement to do things differently we let the fox in the hen house and we start doing things fundamentally against the constitution. Change in education reform good. Federal government paying for religious indoctrination bad.

The cabinet in general. If the goal was to shake up DC and make an attempt at the swamp, this is a good start.
You and I have discussed the religion/school issue before. I simple know whenCatholic Schools existed in the inner cities. a great many poor, black kids got a real chance for an education. Now, they have ZERO. I wish there was some other large private group, that had the resources of the Catholic Church, that could do this so we could take your religion thing off the table, But no group has stepped up.
Why are you so consumed with separation of church and state? If the government can give funds to Al Sharpton to help poor kids why can’t it give funds to a religious organization to do the same?

It would theoretically incentivize the public schools to improve as well if they lose students. Keep the public schools, but remove some of the bureaucrats and union crap and make them compete with the private schools. The cost per child for education in this country is way too high compared to other countries when you take into account where the US ranks in education.

Agree completely. If you get tax credits, and you freely choose where to send your kids to school. the state should not be able to say ‘ any school but a religious one.’ Believe that would be unconstitutional.
Believe this whole separation idea is a complete red herring. The libs don’t want ONE dollar to be taken from their budget to go to any private school.

You’re telling me you would be just as OK if it was Muslim Synagogues or the Satanic Church doing all the inner city work? I bet not. People are OK with it when it’s their side doing the infringing on liberties and freedoms.

Is freedom and the constitution important to you? If so you can just have the parts that you like be the things that are taken seriously. And be OK with freedom of religion not being taken seriously.

No group has stepped up because the Catholic church has learned how to amass an insane amount of money with not paying taxes while at the same time knowing the future of any organization is in indoctrinating kids.

Do these churches actually care about education or indoctrination? Do the education without the indoctrination and we are fine. If Al Shapton is using that money without indoctrination then we are fine. This isn’t a hard concept.

You don’t understand the church community aspect that goes along with a good Catholic school. Pretty sure our school runs on a lower budget per student than the public schools, gets no public money and gives kids a significantly better education. The kids also appreciate the church community aspect of the school and it’s much more of a family than a regular school. Nobody is forced to attend and the government doesn’t fund it so why such a problem if I want to send my kids there and get some of MY tax money back for it? Nobody is infringing on anybody.

That’s crazy. Ours doesn’t even have nuns, just teachers who choose to work at a better school for less than the public school. They have a pretty radical school mission though “BCS will provide an exceptional Catholic education emphasizing formation in faith, family spirit and academic excellence.” They’re students only get into crap schools like Gonzaga, Villanova, Seton Hall, Notre Dame. Pretty lame when they have a whole 80 or so kids per grade. They also offer over a dozen AP classes starting in 9th grade as well as college credit classes. Then there’s the test scores that far exceed any public school around here and graduation rates the public schools couldn’t dream of, but yeah, it’s just a big indoctrination factory.

I just thought of a down side and I’m probably going to pull my kids from the indoctrination camp now. They have only managed to win 4 state championships so far this school year.

I would have killed to go there when I was a kid, religion or not. All I’m asking is that my money, or at least a portion of it, goes to educating my kids. If you don’t like the religion portion of the school, then that’s what STEM and public schools are for.

My wife went to school back in the days the nuns carried a ruler or strap. Good times. Maybe it’s not common here (US) but in my public high school the gym teacher had “the slipper” and the principal had “the strap”…if you wanted to avoid the dreaded parental phone call you could take the slipper or the strap. Of course I never had such experiences (at school) as I was such a nerd that the teachers loved me.

Did you even look at any of Linda McMahon’s work with education. A simple Wikipedia search shows she has worked many years in education, maybe not as a teacher, but as an administrator. She also sat on Connecticut’s board of education. So, I don’t see it as silly, like you.

She has worked at some colleges and sat on a boar of education. That is NOT someone who has a fucking clue what actually happens in classrooms. She’s a rich person who got these positions because of her money. I see it as silly because I did know about those things but also realize being on a board to try and OK some curriculum is no where the same thing has being apart of the actual profession at any point in your life.

People, security everywhere,. You go to a nice place to eat and you’re likely to get waned by security as some big shot is there. Traffic is a mess but it’s nice to see all the horrah.

OSHA’s rule for employers is if it’s not documented it didn’t happen. Since they are all part of the fed, we simply apply that same logic, and if the crime isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.

In 8 statistical QB Categories Sam Darnold average ranking is 7th. Kwerk is 17th. For $10 million dollars its a steal and exactly what the team needed. This also goes to show what KOC means to this team more than Kirk did. Would Kirk be in the top 10 in these 8 categories of he was here? Probably. Would he be worth what we were paying him and Atlanta is paying him now? Hell no. And the more time goes on, the more of what I was arguing for years and years on here and the DN is proving more and more correct.

Hunting week is always a busy week around our house. Our second son is the big hunter in the family so he comes up and spends about a week at our house while we hunt on my in-laws land. He is also a much better handyman than I am. Honestly my wife is a better handyman than I am, but that is not part of the story. Anyway, when our son gets here, mom usually has a long list of stuff for him to do. This year we are working on revamping our home office. He has been ripping up carpet, putting legs on desks and next she wants him to help me put together the new tv stand. And we haven’t even gotten to cutting up the downed tree in the yard. The poor kid hasn’t had barely a minute to relax. I keep telling my wife that he is going to stop coming up here if she keeps giving him chores to do.

He shot two does on Sunday so we were cutting those up Sunday night. Now he is mostly buck hunting. He likes to get us and Grammie some venison while he is looking for his big buck.

Meh, Sam needs to be better in November to earn a Nickname like that. Sams November QBR was just 60.5 which would rank him 13th overall compared to the season average….Barely above average.

Cousins’ (Kirktober) October QBR however was an excellent 68.5, which would place him 5th in QBR.

I like what Sam is doing, but no nick manes until he plays a bit better.

Even if it’s only for the remainder of this year, why wouldn’t you want to learn from a HC like KOC, you know, a guy who has turned around Sam Darnold’s career? Speaking of which, Sammy is gonna get PAID this offseason. The pending free agent list sucks and the draft isn’t looking nearly as strong as last year.

Yes he will, and it wont be by us. HOWEVER. I feel like a lot of fans would be fine keeping him again, at the right amount. Whats the max you would pay for Darnold on, lets say a 3 year deal, 2 guaranteed, so JJ has more time to heal and learn? I also realize this goes against having a rookie QB on the cheap contract in terms of team construction but lets run the hypothetical anyways.

bowbunch

I would not pay him any more than 15 mill per year. Off the top of my head, I’d say, 12 per year with escalators for starting. If they sign Jones now, then just give him a low contract, similar to Darnold’s current deal since there’s no way Sam is getting less than 30ish, which is around what Geno and Baker are getting (25 and 33 respectively).

KFEY93
Reply to  bowbunch

4) Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns
5) Joe Flacco, Indianapolis Colts
6) Jacoby Brissett, New England Patriots

Sam has done well (very well) thus far. A lot will depend on here on out. If we go on to win the SB and he plays big, he’ll be here. And, even if we lose SB but he plays great – other factors cause loss – he’ll be here. But there are a myriad of outcomes in between that will drive this.

One, those type of injuries are tricky. Two, JJ is a rookie that hasn’t played one NFL down. And even if JJ turns out OK, rookie QB’s have their ups and downs (note the kid from DC) and even have second year slumps ( guy from Texans).
We are very close right now. Taking on risk not really necessary unless we have to.
