Happy Thorsday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation. As always, remember to be cool to one another.

I got moved into our new shop yesterday, 30′ x 20′ heated shop with its own bathroom. I’ll have room to keep the boat in there over the winter so I can work on it. I need to replace the electrical system in it. Once I get that done, it’ll be basically like new……only 46 years old. Kiddo’s been killing it in school & elsewhere, so I bought him a basketball hoop for in the shop. He’s been bugging me about getting one, but the driveway at our house is at a steep angle, so that was a no-go. I surprised him with it after school yesterday, he was pretty stoked.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

Jim Irsay is calling for all plays to be reviewable in the last two minutes. Do you agree with him?

Personally, I’d love to see the NFL adopt a review system similar to college ball. If a play looks close, the booth stops play & reviews the play. The college system is FAR less clunky than the NFL’s mess of a system, and in the end, the game moves more quickly.

Minnesota Vikings News:

Vikings.com has the Vikings @ Packers Week 8 Injury Report, along with a game preview of Vikings @ Packers. Also, Cam Bynum was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Much deserved, in my opinion.

From MSN, former NFL player Sergio Brown has been denied release as he is charged with the murder of his own mother. Messed up story here, yikes.

CBS Sports released their QB power rankings.

Jim Irsay is calling for rule changes after the NFL admits to botching multiple calls last Sunday in the Colts-Browns game, per CBS Sports. That was an absolute mess, the Colts have every right to be upset about that game, the refs basically handed that game to the Browns.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Buffalo must think they are Minnesota. At the one yard line and can’t get a touchdown.

A minor website that I sell on has decided that they are doing a shipping program that most people cannot opt out of. He, the CEO, keeps painting it pretty, but it is just a way for them to make more money. It was not a site that was keyed toward book sales anyway as I rarely sold anything on there, but since it didn’t cost me anything unless I sold something and was minimal work to maintain I hung around for a bunch of years. After this heavy handed handling of things, I have closed my store on that site. I won’t miss them, they won’t miss me.

Saw something on the news last night that was beyond sobering. In case you didn’t see it.
Two guys in Nevada went for a joy ride and ran over and killed a retired policeman (they were looking for him). Then they traded places driving so the other person could run someone over – which he did.
They then show the suspects in court laughing about everything and giving the finger to the deceased’s wife and family. One big joke to them.
I just thought WTF has happened to us. And what needs to be done.

Short answer – more, good decent people that are tired of this crap actually start getting involved. As distasteful as politics is, it won’t change if you don’t get involved. Donations, volunteer time, whatever. It will take time for sure because as you say, there is a lot of corruption at top.
Off my head, elect a mayor that will be all over the Chief of Police fro crime. Many, many folks will support this. More need to speak up.
Schools – get some people (elected) on School Boards that can start cleaning things up.
The crazy people shooting things up – I don’t have a good answer for that. But I tell you this, if one of those guys gets caught alive, I’d make a hell of an example of him so the next guy would think about it – of course, that won’t happen

It’s coming boys…study from Northwestern U:

A new study has found that electrification of transportation can save money and lives, looking at the city of Chicago as a test case.

The researchers calculated that if 30 per cent of vehicles in Chicago currently running on combustion engines were converted to electric, the reduction in pollution would save more than 1,000 lives and $10 billion US in health care costs every year.

Vehicle emissions produce greenhouse gasses, of course, but there are other combustion products besides carbon dioxide coming out of tailpipes that affect health, especially in urban areas. Nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, such as the black smoke from diesel engines, has impacts on the respiratory and cardiovascular system.

Isn’t it obvious that if you remove polluting vehicles (carbon-fuel based engines), you will reduce the pollution in the air where the vehicles were located? You don’t need a study to understand that concept. However, it will me a increase in pollution where the electricity is produced, where the lithium is mined, and where the cars are made. It isn’t a question about the amount of pollution. It is a question about the type and location of the pollution.

Agreed. I think the honest trickiest part of that… if you are a gun owning person and you know if you go get mental help then there’s a possibility your guns are taken… then you don’t go get help. It’s tough.

I know, its a slippery slope but my goodness this seems like an easy one.

Maybe if you get a psychiatrist to certify you as mentally stable post treatment you can get your guns back? I don’t know but there has to be a way.

Slippery slope – probably.
But that aside, what do you think of the state of psychiatry. Heard a guy recently say he felt that psychiatry is at about the place medicine was before they realized there were germs and viruses.
For sure, crazy people shouldn’t have guns. But looking at some of the people that the psychiatrists release from prison and say they are safe for society, I wonder.
For sure, a tough issue.

Psychiatry is an Art not a Science.
It is not ‘provable/repeatable’.

Had this argument with Mental Health types at the prison all the time.
They didn’t like the argument but they could deny it.

Kind of a continuation of the discussion regarding how difficult a 9-5 office job is for our coddled college grads. I left the horse pistol about 2 pm as the roads were getting worse and the highway department is short of both trucks (as many are still configured for construction) and drivers (as some of them are also firefighters and were dealing with the monster fire downtown), worked from home.

They wanted a paracentesis later in the day on some guy coming through the ER, was getting admitted. I think paracentesis is a simple procedure that any HCP can perform. However, the clinical notes are festooned with references to “rad is unavailable will perform as soon as available”.

I may have to address this issue. I’m fine doing them for convenience sake but when you start getting called out for something that simple to perform one gets defensive.

I think younger/new employees are so scared of making mistakes they get paralyzed. Not saying it’s a good excuse but in my experience just enabling them and saying you can do this, I know you can etc… goes a lot better than… DO YOUR JOB!!!! I know it’s weak sauce to go that route but this is where we get into the generational issue with them being soft. Not all of them of course.

We had 6 inches of snow yesterday and supposed to get 5 more today.

Freezey didn’t come up and get my snow blower running. So I had to hand shovel the 6 inches off of the driveway…That sucked I will have to do the same tonight.

I had my mechanically inclined friend try to get it going. He failed (but he is a Cowboys fan so not surprising). He cleaned the spark plug, which he said looked good, put new gasoline in, and the bitch still didn’t start. He says it sounds like its not getting fuel but doesn’t know why.

Next step for me will be to ask my neighbor to try and get it going, I will offer $100. The neighbor dude is very good with engines so if he agrees to do it I like my chances, well worth the $100.

Roads are almost completely iced over, I just trundle along at 40 mph. The truck stop must have 150 trucks, amazing how they squeeze in there.

The fire at the “historic” Jordan hotel has caused a major mess downtown, ice on all the power lines and main street blocked off, like a skating rink. Pisses me off the way that building was abandoned and became an eyesore. If a first responder had been hurt fighting that blaze I would be pissed.

Yes and no. Last winter my wife got me the Vulva after I saw visions of the pearly gates driving my RWD Ranger home on glare ice, that thing is a tank. She mainly drove the 4WD 2011 F-150 which I have snow tires for, but she eschew as they are messy and deliver poor fuel economy and all seasons are just as good (her words).

Sounds like this year she will drive the Vulva with all seasons and given the vehicles at my disposal I will drive the old F-150. Once I get some time off a couple of weeks from now I’ll have the tire shop swap the winter tires on. Last couple of days I have been driving the AWD RX450h which is actually very stable on ice with all seasons if you keep it in snow mode. Guy ahead of me last night in a half ton was really struggling.

That sucks, I have a little four wheeler I’ve been fighting for a couple years. Had it running once, not quite right, tried a new carburetor and now nothing. Have you tried putting a little gas directly in the cylinder? If it will fire with that and then quits fuel flow is likely the issue. Putting some fuel directly in the cylinder may also pull enough of a vacuum to start drawing fuel.

Breast u/s, guy or not, is a MQSA procedure and I don’t do mammo. Told ’em a) no sonographer on duty that does breast b) Friday afternoon good luck finding a breast rad to read it and c) CT is a better option.

Got this snarky response that u/s was her preferred option for the patient. I asked her why then every other patient with two weeks of diarrhea has to get a CT in the ER but this guy asking for a CT was like massively inappropriate.

It was the NP on duty in the ED.

It was a dumb convo from start to finish. Her calling me to gripe that a sonographer wasn’t available was as fruitful as calling a cardiologist to complain that the echocardiographer won’t do a thyroid ultrasound. Figured when I pointed out that I wouldn’t read a breast ultrasound and they probably wouldn’t get a report until Monday anyhow that would be the end of it. Oh no she had to school me on the best imaging test for a male inflamed breast even after I pointed out that the workup would include a diagnostic mammogram in that case (yes we do those on men).

Not that the CT was massively diagnostic but at least I could say lots of swelling and inflammation, no abscess, probably infection if fails to resolve in two week proceed to diagnostic mammogram given risk of inflammatory breast ca.

I have a 7 quart dutch oven and I agree, it is a great way to make soups/stew/chili/roasts.
I have a crock pot, but I have gravitated more and more to the dutch oven.

Crock pot is good for lazy week night meals you can set in the AM. Or pot luck/ party stuff. I rarely use it, Id say less than 10 times in 5 years. Also using instant pot less and less.

Happy Thorsday, Friday for me. This is the last day of owning our restaurant, we are closed tomorrow and transfer ownership. So I will be down to one job and all of my kids’ and MIL’s projects to work on.

I can’t remember who originally thought of the idea, but basically there would be an official in the booth reviewing every play as the game goes on, and if they see something the call down to the field and change the play call.

Wrenage

They got to do something. It’s just stupid that bad calls are made, bad calls are replayed over and over in slow motion, announcers say it was a bad call, the official commentator says it was a bad call, every viewer can see it was a bad call…and then they stick with the bad call.

And they do all of that while the refs are bumbling about the field talking it over. Be quicker and more accurate to do it all remotely.

The way they have made roughing the passer, illegal contact and hits on defenseless player rules subjective and simultaneously catastrophic for defense further complicates the matter.

Clearly, today’s system is pretty poor.
Not sure about this, but it seemed before reviews even existed, the refs actually did a better job. Missed some but nothing like today.
Roughing the passer, holding, PI and illegal contact, are all subjective and not for review. Seems that’s where the big issues are anyway.
You can’t review a PI but you can whether a WR drug his foot just right on the sideline.- seems out of balance.
Would tread east towards any type of more review.

I reckon they missed a lot of stuff in the old days, but now TV coverage has gotten so much better, and we have YouTube, etc. with replays at our fingertips, it is more noticeable.

I watch about 10 percent of the amount of football I used to watch, and it seems like even in that 10 percent, I regularly see game-breaking calls where a defense has an offense stopped and then a phantom call grants an auto-first down.

I especially hate that defenseless receiver stuff. Blow to the head. 15 yards. First down. Then replay shows the DB hit was actually shoulder to shoulder. They got to clean that up.

How?
Look at two recent SB’s.
Bengals stop Rams 3rd and 8 at goal line end of game. Weak, weak PI call favor of Rams- ball game.
Chiefs/Eagles. Eagles stop Chiefs on 3rd and long – again weak, weak defensive holding call against Eagles – ball game.
These calls help decide ball games and were at best very marginal.
They’re not reviewable.

At the end of the day, probably the best solution is to just shrug and say, “The NFL is broken. Don’t be surprised if your team gets screwed.”

The problem is, once you open every play up for review, it slows the game down and it possibly goes down a rabbit hole.

It might lead to breaking the 3 hour gametime rule you were hoping for.

Broderick is a BEAST! You ever listen to Nevermore? Jeff Loomis and Broderick together is one of my all time guitar combos. Too bad they never made it bigger and Warrel Dane died, he had such a unique voice. But their album This Godless Endeavor is a friggin master class in riffs, leads and great catchy melodies.
