Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Twinkies beat Royals 6-5.
At least they didn’t start another losing streak after ending a winning streak.

Let me add D-MO Cori Bush to the list of idiots who don’t know what Memorial Day is. The “squad”. Elected morons.

I don’t know of any close relatives that died during military service, but I would like to honor by dad who served from 1942 to 1945. He was a 2nd Lieutenant that served in the Army Air Force, stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He was a pilot that re-trained pilots that were shot down during the war. He also joined again for a short stint around 1950 but that must have been relatively boring as I never heard any stories from that time. I believe he was stationed in Omaha during that period. It was way before I was born.

Also I would like to honor my brother-in-law who is 20 years older than me. He served in the Army during the early to mid 1960s. He was supposed to go to Vietnam, but instead they sent him to Korea. We are all very happy about that.

And my son who joined the Army in 2017 as a cardiovascular specialist. He is now a Sergeant and is a nurse who is stationed at JBLM (temporarily on medical leave due to his son’s leukemia). His plan is to get into the Physician’s Assistant program and make the army a career.

Merry Memorial Day Monday Minny Maniacs!

Found this in my search yesterday – Pro Set released a set of Desert Storm cards during the first Gulf War. Pretty cool set. Saddam Hussein also has a card in this set, as does GHW Bush and Dick Cheney.

Very cool – I collected for years. Mainly football cards but quite a few baseball cards as well.

Got this one in a mystery box set a few years ago. It’s autographed – guy went undrafted and the Vikes signed him to as an UDFA. Now plays in Canada.

It’s not – saw a resurgence during the pandemic but it’s waned. Got a close friend that buys/sells/trades cards online – he builds custom cabinets for card sets complete with personalized engraving, and makes a shitload, or did during Covid.

I started as a kid buying individual packs and then eventually pack boxes. Occasionally would buy team sets, mainly Fleer & Pro Set football cards. Frequently went to shows and set up a booth as a teenager.

Got back into during Covid and started buying cheap individual cards for about $3 a pop – was originally searching for a buyer for my Billy Ripken ‘fuckface’ cards and it just snowballed. Bought a few complete sets of the ‘93 Fleer & Donruss baseball editions – opened one and one is sealed. The Jeter rookie I bought came in the ‘93 Topps set – I bought the individual card for $1600 in Gem Mint Condition and lost a bid for the complete sealed ‘93 Topps set at the end of 2020 (my bid was 3k and it went for almost 9) literally wanted the set to try and add another Jeter rookie (but who knows if the card would have graded well)

I was at the Naval Academy Graduation on Friday.
Secretary Austin gave the speech.

I don’t really care much for him, but credit where credit is due – he gave a pretty solid, non-political speech.

Then, he stood there in his suit and tie on a hot day, standing in the sun and shook every one of the 1,050 graduates hands as they received their diplomas. Took about 90 minutes.

He did it right, and definitely, standing in the hot sun greeting every new service member personally was awesome. Secretary Austin was a real Army 4 Star, and he knows whereof he speaks, unlike Biden who at the United States Naval Academy’s Class of 2022 Graduation and Commissioning Ceremony, claimed that he was appointed to the military school in 1965. He wasn’t, and in fact has never served.

A pathological liar is someone who excessively lies. They exhibit a pattern of consistent dishonesty that feels impossible to stop. Pathological lying involves an irrational need to fabricate stories, events, or facts.’

Sounds about right.

Good morning Surly. I think most folks know this day was originally known as Decoration Day, and it originated in the years following the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The last 15 years, I observed Memorial Day by visiting Arlington National Cemetery, and participating in ceremonies to honor our fallen heroes. Now I’m down in Tampa though, and I will simply say a prayer of gratitude to them and their families for their sacrifices. My wife attaches her American flag to her Challenger and drives it around all day as well.

BTW today also marks the unofficial beginning of the summer season.

Arlington Nation is a very special place and especially so Memorial Weekend – a sea of American flags.
Participating in the actual ceremonies is certainly a special honor. Very, very few folks can say that.
From a rear guy to a tip of the spear guy – THANKS.

What did John Milton say? “They also serve, who only stand and wait”. Your service was/is valuable, and valued. Service members are there to protect this Nation from all enemies foreign and domestic, and their families by default serve too. We are all a part of this, rear guard, or trigger pullers. I salute you for your service as well, JR.
