According to Krammer of the Strib, Cine and Booth are in danger of being cut...

“The phrase that I’ve heard behind the scenes is the light bulb not going on with [Cine and Booth] specifically,” said Kramer. “So how do you interpret that when you’re not sitting in the room next to them as they’re studying these things? … So yeah, the light bulb is just not going on, and it didn’t go on last year.”

Injury excuses will surely be made for both, but the bottom line is they both suck and need to show something this offseason.

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Never believed the report had any merit. Makes no sense to trade what many (including me) believe to be the best WR in football for an unknown, with the QB room still treading unknown waters.

If they had traded Jets for the number 5 on draft day wouldn’t they have gotten JJ at that point. Then Turner at #11 and then looked for a receiver at #23?

A lot less stress and drama that way. There might have been some moving around but we would have had all that draft capital that they used trading up to #10 and #17.

Way to simplistic to be realistic IMHO.

My nephew has just challenged me to a game of Madden – says he’s been practicing his defense and thinks he can beat me (he never has, not legitimately – he was up on me once 21-0 when I noticed that his offensive lineman were really fast – the little shit went into the roster and changed the attributes to all his players to 99)

I haven’t played in a while and we won’t play until Saturday so I have time to go into practice mode and get in some stick work.

Last time we played I had great fun in calling out his coverages mid-play, then exploiting their weaknesses. He’s starting to get the differences in Cover 3 vs Cover 2, man vs zone and how to recognize blitzes and find the hot read – he’s getting better, but still plays for the home run ball too often, usually leading to a turnover.

I must admit that I get a kick out of when he does score…. He runs around the house yelling and fist-pumping, not caring that he’s losing by 30+ points. It’s all joy…. and its contagious.

Skol!

I’m sorry (not really) but listening to an actor who spends half his time pretending to be someone else, and the other half in a shrink’s office trying to unscrew his head, isn’t wise, in my opinion. The fact that he’s out there in front of a courthouse where a sham trial is going on, promoting Biden to the masses, is galling. He needs to drink a gallon or two of STFU.

This from something called Will Ragatz from SI

“McCarthy has a long ways to go in his development. There’s work to be done on his footwork and lower-body mechanics, his upper-body mechanics, his ability to read NFL defenses, his command of the playbook, the consistency of his accuracy, and everything else you can imagine”

You can say that of every rookie QB. The NFL is a universe away from college ball. I spent some time watching McCarthy. Obviously Michigan was built around a running game, and a pretty basic route tree, but I saw plays where McCarthy correctly deciphered the defense, and delivered the ball to the right place on the field at the right time. These instances were occasions where a defense dropped a linebacker into the secondary to take away a specific throw, and McCarthy immediately went to the next guy, seamlessly. Same with safeties that started with showing they were going to shade to a certain side of the field pre-snap, but then went the other way, and latched onto a route immediately after the snap. McCarthy saw it, and threw a great ball behind the safety. It was a pro throw.

JJ does have a long way to go, but he showed some things NFL QB’s need to be able to do, to be good at this level.

Don’t you hate how things you could do physically at 18 and shrug off the next day now stick with you for a day or more? I finished getting my irrigation system installed and planted my 350 trees. That involved crawling on my hands and knees back and forth multiple times over the 3 x 700 foot belts, taking a break to pound posts and stretch the bottom wire of the repositioned fence, and (thank goodness my wife convinced me to buy it) use a kinda ice auger looking tool to drill holes for all the trees, then crawl along fitting the roots into the hole, tossing in a handful of potting soil, and compacting the loose soil around them.

The miracle of the whole thing was that the irrigation system from well through pump manifold and drip lines worked the first time I switched it on.

Drake Maye signs his deal.
I would assume now, that some of the dominos begin to fall for the other QB’s.

The New England Patriots agreed to terms with quarterback Drake Make on Tuesday, as first reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Media. The four-year, $36.641 million rookie deal carries a prorated signing bonus of $23.468 million, per the accounting of PatsCap’s Miguel Benzan

It’s not so much the amount for rookie contracts as they are mostly pre-determined. It’s the amount of guarantees and offset language.

So the other QB’s will be looking at the those two items I believe as well as how the signing bonus’ are structured.

Point is, once one signs, the others can look at it and try to get a little better in minor ways.

Here is an agent’s take on what is “negotiable”.

Negotiable items

There are very few negotiable items with rookie contracts anymore. The two primary negotiating issues, particularly at the top of the draft, are the payment schedule of the signing bonus and whether salary guarantees will have offsets. Another important consideration is the language outlining the voiding of salary guarantees.

I think everything but the 5th year option is guaranteed at signing and the offset language simply means the team gets cap space and possibly a cash savings in the event they cut the player and that player re-signs with a different team.

DE Viking

It has to do with “future earnings” from another team. While the signed guaranteed is guaranteed, it is still an amount of money that a player want’s to earn on their next team.

Offset language — Contract clauses for guaranteed salary that define whether a player can collect salary from another team exclusive of the guaranteed salary he is already earning should he be released.

Offset language relates to what happens to a player’s salary if he’s cut during the first four years of his career, while he’s still playing on his rookie contract. For example, if a player has $4 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract and is cut, he’ll still be owed that $4 million.

bowbunch
Admin
Reply to  DE Viking
28 May 2024 1:44 pm

The offset language means that the player doesn’t get to double dip if they are cut. If the player is cut and their contract is guaranteed (like rookie contracts are), then they get the remaining money whether they get another job or not. Let’s say the player is owed 10 million dollars in the 4th year but is cut after the 3rd. With a full offset, if the player signs for 5 million with a new team then the former team only owes him 5 million. With no offset language, then the primary team owes 10 million no matter what and the 5 million from the new team is in addition.

DE Viking
Reply to  bowbunch

Correct.
IMO, that has something to do with guaranteed dollars. Rookies want to be able to guarantee future dollars if they can.

bowbunch
Admin
Reply to  DE Viking
28 May 2024 2:04 pm

I though their contracts were fully guaranteed at signing and the only difference was when the money was paid? Signing bonus you get the cash now. Salary you get in the future, but on a rookie contract it’s still guaranteed. I’d want as much up front as possible so it could be invested and make interest whereas any future cash is making zero interest.

DE Viking
Reply to  bowbunch
28 May 2024 2:24 pm

It’s still guaranteed, it’s about whether or not if the player is cut, will the player be able to get the guarantee PLUS the contract from another team. That’s the offset language that you are correct on.

I’m just saying that future dollars are important to the rookie and is tied to the guaranteed amount. The rookie either gets $4 million guaranteed from the two teams, or the rookie gets $4 million from the team that drafted him PLUS whatever else a new team wants to pay him, if he is cut. The offset is tied to the guaranteed amount.

It’s really not that much of an issue, but it is if the rookie sucks and is cut in year 3.

I’m a bit more a baseball guy than football but do see similarities.
As such see similarities between pitchers and QB’s. A lot of stats, W/L’s etc.
Reading below about SB appearances for QB’s, made me wonder.
Nolan Ryan was I think one hell of a pitcher. Save for his rookie season with the Mets, which was carried by Seaver and Koosman, he never went to a World Series again and even his playoff record was just .500.
But he was in my mind a great pitcher.

Well, off my head – there’s Ferguson Jenkins (great Cub pitcher) never won a playoff game.
After his rookie season, Dan Morino never got back to SB. And there’s another great pitcher named Mike Mussina (believe not sure in HOF) but folks said he had bad luck as Yankees didn’t seem to score as much when he pitchjed (affected his W/l).
And then the other way – Jimmy G wins playoffs and gets to SB, but I don’t think he’s an elite QB.
Believe as a general rule, in most endeavors, when humans are involved it’s not like odds on a dice throw.

Dan Marino played in 18 playoff games. Yes, there are QBs who have had a playoff run that weren’t great and were carried by a team and that does not make them great. However, there are none of the best in the history of the league who didn’t repeatedly and consistently make the playoffs. I’m not going into baseball. No good QB in the history of the league has ever failed to make the playoffs numerous times. Good team or bad team. Good QBs have proven through 70 years to be able to get the job done no matter what. Until you can provide an actual example other than a vague statement you are wrong. Rogers is not an “average QB”. Many people consider him one of the most talented of all time.
You stated ‘ no good QB in the history of the league has fsiled to make the playoffs numerous times.
I simply asked who?

That is simply incorrect.
Rogers is not AVERAGE – he’s one of the best of all time.
So again to your very question, what ‘average QB’ takes their team to the playoffs regularly with a bad team?

We’re not talking about average QBs. Average QBs don’t go to the playoffs very often unless they are on good teams and will even miss the playoffs when they join a team that is good enough to go to the NFCCG with a journeyman QB because they are nothing more than average and that is the point. If you want to put somebody in the good to great category then you have to explain to me how they are the only great one in the history of the league to have such “bad luck”.

Simple. Different OCs (even though 3 of them ran very similar schemes that were evolved form the previous ones so it really isnt 3 different schemes)

Changing OCs is commonplace in the NFL, especially if you’re a good team and is overcome by the good ones.

I doubt changing OC’s every year is “commonplace” in the NFL. But I also doubt QB’s are usually successful when a different OC comes in every year. The ability to play well, regardless of scheme, play calling, etc, is a mark of someone who is really good though, in my opinion.

Question again as YOU PUT what GOOD?

You just said average QBs? Maybe the confusion here is the interpretation of the word good? I simply used that in place of writing great again. The fact remains that the good/great ones made the playoffs consistently and repeatedly and I answered your question about a QB taking a less than stellar team to the playoffs. Rodgers did it multiple times. Contrary to popular belief, the Patriots were not a stacked team every year for 20 years. They had the best QB of all time on the team. It may have been a one year wonder, but the Texans went to the playoffs last year because of their QB. That team was nothing special. Shoot they drafted #2 overall last year which should tell you how stacked they were. There are plenty of examples of QBs elevating the team but nobody has yet to show me the great one that was brought down throughout their entire career by the players around them. While it is a team game, the great ones are great because they get it done.

JRobert

It is indeed “average” versus “good” . Rogers is neither so him taking a poorer team to playoffs is besides the point.
The Patriots lacked true WR talent but had good olines and good to very good defenses – not to mention their coaching. And their QB is maybe the greatest ever.
We’ll see about the Texans – they did get there.
And again, there is no dispute about what GEAT QB’s can get done. Now, what the good to very good ones can accomplish with poor teams around them is debateable.

bowbunch

But there is a debate about the greats because I have been told repeatedly that a great QB still can’t win, even though the greats always did find a way to win repeatedly over their careers.

Honestly, I think Matt Stafford will qualify nicely here. Stafford went 0-3 in the playoffs, in his dozen seasons in Detroit. After getting there in his third season in 2011, the Lions settled for two more wild-card appearances in ’14 and ’16. Stafford owns tons of Lions franchise passing records, and indeed I think he has a couple NFL records. He won a Super Bowl with a “good team”. But he couldn’t get anywhere with a “bad team”.

Since I started this with Nolan Ryan believe he touched the ball more than 10-15% of the time. In his days, a lot of complete games or certainly late innings.
In football, with both teams having the ball about 50% of time, given the kicking game, half the time for a QB seems high.

Question for you animal whisperer types.

A lone pronghorn has been stalking my dogs and I on our walks the last 4-5 days. When he (has little spike horns) spots us (it is like he is watching for us and knows our schedule) he runs down from the ridge or up from the creek bottom and stands about 60 yards away, makes a chuffing noise every ten seconds or so, and follows along as we walk. The older choco pays him no mind, the younger one will move out between the pronghorn and I creating a buffer zone about ten yards out.

Pronghorn seems to have literally no fear of us. Not sure if he is looking for a mate or companionship or just curious. Any ideas?

Of course, when season opens antelope won’t let a squirrel get within 200 yards without jetting off.

That’s a possibility…(s)he just attracts our attention cuz the pronghorn is approaching us from a half mile away…it’s not like there is a fawn in the alfalfa field or road ditches. Also, I was putting along in the hills spraying for spurge in my side by side all through the areas the pronghorn would be bedded down and no sign of it.

I am not calling out anyone – so please do not take offense…sometimes I am indeed the Donkey. Nonetheless, I find this parable to be accurate in describing some of the disagreements we have on this site.

The donkey told the tiger, “The grass is blue.”

The tiger replied, “No, the grass is green.”

The discussion became heated, and the two decided to submit the issue to arbitration, so they approached the lion.

As they approached the lion on his throne, the donkey started screaming: ′′Your Highness, isn’t it true that the grass is blue?”

The lion replied: “If you believe it is true, the grass is blue.”

The donkey rushed forward and continued: ′′The tiger disagrees with me, contradicts me and annoys me. Please punish him.”

The king then declared: ′′The tiger will be punished with 3 days of silence.”

The donkey jumped with joy and went on his way, content and repeating ′′The grass is blue, the grass is blue…”

The tiger asked the lion, “Your Majesty, why have you punished me, after all, the grass is green?”

The lion replied, ′′You’ve known and seen the grass is green.”

The tiger asked, ′′So why do you punish me?”

The lion replied, “That has nothing to do with the question of whether the grass is blue or green. The punishment is because it is degrading for a brave, intelligent creature like you to waste time arguing with an ass, and on top of that, you came and bothered me with that question just to validate something you already knew was true!”

The takeaway: The biggest waste of time is arguing with the fool and fanatic who doesn’t care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions.

Just going to depend on the structure of the contract. Is Jets more worried about actual money or is he like most NFL players and is more concerned with a headline saying he has the highest annual average even though he isn’t ever going to see most of that money? I have a feeling he wants to win enough that he’ll take a deal that is structured to give the team some leniency (I’m guessing a lot of roster bonus) and gets him a meaningless headline.

Well here’s a thought – not mine got it from a show few weeks back. And if you hate Cousins, might need to put that aside a minute.
Here goes – JJ has had two guys throw him the ball. Burrows and Cousins – both are accurate and throw the ball well. If JJ is going to sign long term, no matter the money, he wants to ‘make sure’ there is someone there that can get him the ball well.

Then you would think he would be at OTAs to start getting a feel for the rookie unless his mind is made up one way or the other already. Going to the Timberpups game with Addison tells me he’s still happy in Minny and he’ll be around. I’m guessing the deal is 99% done and they are waiting on some weird NFL timing thing.

This actually speaks more about Trevor Lawrence than Gardner Minshew. Lawrence was the #1 pick in the 2021 draft, and some labeled him the “GOAT” immediately. To date, though, he hasn’t lived up to the hype. Even so, pundits still rank him highly. Minshew was drafted in the sixth round, 178th overall, of the 2019 draft. Thus he’s been in the league longer and had more time to develop than Lawrence. Still, Minshew was not highly touted, and Lawrence was. I’d say Lawrence has more talent than Minshew, and he’ll eventually demonstrate it.

“That Cousins has looked like himself to this point doesn’t hurt, either,” wrote Breer. “He already has a lot of command over new Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson’s offense, and is raising the standard for the other 10 guys in the offensive huddle.

You hide behind the implication of your words as a way to dance around what you are truly feeling. Its a pretty common and obvious tactic at this point with you. “I never SAID that” but if you read between the lines, its pretty obvious you value individual player ( one in particular whom you personally know) success over that of a teams, and had he never been the QB of the Purple and Gold you wouldn’t even be here right now.

Like I said, ALL great QB’s that have numerous playoff appearances and wins, did so on great teams. That’s a fact.

BTW I answered the Gardner Minshew question already. The comparison is a false equivalency. Minshew has been in the league for 5 years, and Lawrence has been in the league three years. I see a slight difference in experience there. Also Lawrence was the #1 pick and thrust into the starting position quickly, on a bad team, much like Bryce Young. So yes, this early in his career, Lawrence is not “living up to expectations”. Watching his play, I see really good NFL QB traits. I’d be willing to bet he makes a big leap in production this year.

It is not a false equivalency if we use your logic because stats are the medium with which QBs are compared to their contemporaries. That is what you said so you either believe it or you’re full of hot air. Quite frankly I don’t think you believe half the stuff you say about QBs because you are so inconsistent. And Cousins does his job on the field at a high level. That’s every single year as a starter. You say they’re “just stats”, but in context, Cousins has had a different OC almost every year of his career, played behind bad pass blocking O-lines, and still managed to put up better production than most other QB’s in the league, over the course of his career. I actually find that remarkable.

Butker has every right to believe what we wants to believe and every right to say and support those beliefs especially when he is acting on an individual basis. You start representing your team or the NFL in those regards the water gets murky. But when I hear this stuff about time honored Catholic traditions… Do we really honor the traditions and true history of the Bible? Because damn near every time I come across information that shows how things really were but it goes against a current stance people never then want to honor the ACTUAL past stance and original stance of the church and Bible. As we have talked on here before most of you should know I am on the fence about abortion. Came to the conclusion that 8 weeks, cut off unless the pregnancy threatens the mother’s life… K? And I know many of you disagree but if you want a real, true, not twisted biblical perspective then there’s this. Great information, just great. So do you stand with the church or twisted history which is really party lines… What’s more important the church or party lines?

Why can’t you stand with both? My personal view is separate from what I think should be done legally/politically. I don’t understand why it is so hard for a politician to stand up and say “look, I am against abortion personally, but a complete ban is never going to happen and is just not realistic. If everybody digs in on the extremes nothing will happen. Over 60% of the country agrees with a ban after 8 weeks with caveats for health of the mother, etc. Let’s meet in the middle and move on.” Oh wait, if the dems agreed to anything, they wouldn’t be able to shout that republicans want to control a woman’s body (even though in my opinion restricting abortion is protecting a child. The whole my body my choice I agree with. I just realize that you had the choice sooner than you want to make it other than is extreme cases that could easily be addressed in legislation. You’re just proving my point. Politics is your most important religion. More important than your God and his book. What are you so scared of?

Oh you can but the question I’m bringing up is when people say things like Christian values or Catholic traditions (like Butker said) but most any time I bring up actual basis and foundation of Christian traditions but it goes against current values that have been twisted over the years then all the sudden the Biblical stance they claimed to adhere to previously no longer matters. Just food for thought.

An interesting discussion, as a conservative Christian I go with Psalm 139, versus 13 and 14

For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,

    I know that full well.

But, even your religious discussion really does point out how difficult the abortion question is….which further supports my stance that it should be left to each state and the Feds should stay out of it.

If you want to live in a state that allows the killing of babies, then move to such a state.

Well, I watched it.

First off, Murder is defined by Jesus as hating someone.
Jesus redefined the term, so this little video doesn’t even address Jesus’ view on the matter, which is what defines Christianity.

Second, there are numerous biblical texts that discusses GOD creating you and blessing you in the Womb.

So there is no way that you will fully understand where Christians come from on this.

I think abortion is wrong.
But I understand the challenges our society faces in determining what is right.

This guy is overcomplicating the issue and is stuck on Mosaic Law and worldly philosophy for his points. It is not that complicated.

Generally speaking, Christianity believes life begins at conception due to Psalm 51.

Next, Christ has an entirely more profound definition of murder that goes far beyond human understanding of it. The Mosaic Law was abrogated at the cross. According to 1 John 3, God considers someone who even hates his brother to be a murderer.

Eye for an eye is an Old Testament concept. If this guy doesn’t even realize that, he is next to worthless as an authority on theology.

Thank you for actually watching and giving your perspective on it. I understand and respect your take on it. I don’t think he’s overcomplicating things at all. So we’ll disagree here. But that’s fine. I have no idea if this guy is a believer or what, I really don’t. But he presents things from a historical and informational perspective that I enjoy. He uses actual examples. Psalm 51 is interpreted as life begins at conception… It doesn’t actually say that. That is our interpretation of the English interpretation used to back a stance someone is trying to make. This guy in the video isn’t saying he’s for or against abortion but just showing actual history of the church’s stance on the subject isn’t what people make it out to be and I really appreciate that.

I truly believe to understand Christianity you have to understand Judaism and the old testament so to throw it out as basically not important to the story doesn’t make a lick of sense to me.

I also wonder why he didn’t mention in the Didache that it says, “You should not slay a child by abortion,” if he wants to present what the early church taught. That is a pretty big one to leave out on the subject.

I’ll give Kwesi a slight pass on his first draft. He had the job for 3 months. The information he got on players was from Spielman’s scouts, and he was being influenced by Donatell, on which players he needed for his scheme.

The last couple of drafts he has gotten better.

What if Donatell said he thought Cine was every bit as good as Hamilton, who we should have picked and that swayed kwesi’s decision to make the trade.

Don’t get me wrong the trade was terrible as far as return on investment.

‘Blame the coaches….’. NLV and I have had a few arguments over out offense being too complicated – he thinks so and I think not.
But maybe you guys are right. Recall Bill Walsh simplyfied Montana’s read down to one on his base west coast play. Joe Gibbs made it where Thieisman had to read only half the field on all passing plays. And Chuck Noll basically told Bradshaw one read and dump it.
Maybe there is something to this coaching thing.

KOC’s offense has a lot of moving parts as we’ve discussed. Both the QB and WR’s have to understand what the defense is doing, and the WR’s are expected to alter their routes, while QB is expected to know where the receivers will go, and deliver the ball. Purdy in San Francisco throws a ton of timing routes, that work well. He has been thriving, and doesn’t need to wait in the pocket for his receivers to decide where they’re going and make their move. He drops back, and lets the ball go.

I think KOC will need to adjust his offense without Cousins under center, because the processing required to run his passing scheme is very high.

I’m not sure why people started calling Raggedy Ann “Cine,” though. She is not looking good these days…

First…..suckers….

I know most if not all of you have both wondered where/how I have been and if I have been surviving californiaaaaaaaaa

It’s been a great vacation so far. Bummed around the santa clarita/simi valley area since Wednesday, now spending 3 days in San diego.

Ocean, not surprisingly, is freezing, but boogy boarding with my kids was A BLAST.

I am safe and alive SO FAR. And have enjoyed InNout multiple times (surprisingly prices haven’t been gouged with that restaurant yet.

Going to the San Diego Zoo tomorrow. Hope I don’t fall into the Tiger pit. Or maybe I do hope since I just paid 5.29 per gallon for gas….BLAH.

Santa Clarita is just over the hill from us.

We spent the weekend organizing/cleaning out the storage unit, much less fun than your weekend.

You can find cheaper gas but have to know where to look, Costco, Sams Club, AFB, etc.
