Happy hump day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. Vikings Discussion

Not much news out there, the NFL slow news cycle is in full swing. Pretty soon, we’ll be seeing stories of how a team must be interested in a player because the player’s second-cousin’s baby sister’s uncle’s best friend was seen buying that team’s jersey at a rummage sale. Le sigh. Hopefully Kwesi will start doing some wheeling and dealing to accumulate some more draft picks prior to the draft. If not, we can just sit and wait impatiently for 3:00 pm on March 12th, I have a feeling that there will be plenty of free agency action for us to gripe about this year. Lots of cap space and lots of need.

Vikings News

Vikings.com looks at the defensive line in their 2024 Vikings Position Recap. I think the Vikings’ main focus this off-season should be the big fellas on both sides of the ball, their interior O-line is the main weakness, and the interior D-line needs to be beefed up as well.

Our old pal GASkol looks at the Vikings’ biggest offseason need over at the Daily Norseman.

NFL News

Mark Davis is not happy with how Jon Gruden’s ‘head was chopped off’ and is confident that Tom Brady and Pete Carroll can fill the void, from ESPN. I agree that Gruden got a raw deal, but Davis could’ve stuck up for the man, too. Then again, that’s back when the cancel culture folks were ruling the roost. I’m glad that crap is over.

CBS Sports has another piece predicting that Sam Darnold will go back to the Jets. I sincerely doubt that this will happen, dude probably suffers from PTSD after his stint with that organization.

CBS Sports presents their choices for the top 8 2024 NFL offensive linemen. @You’ll be shocked to find no Vikings on their list.@ I wonder why they went with 8 instead of 10? Writer just got tired or what? Hweird.

An interesting piece from Fox Snooze News, an NFL fan has filed a petition and wants to boycott the league over the NFL’s poor officiating and preferential treatment for certain teams. This will be a good discussion piece for the day.

Media Selection

The PurpleFTW podcast looks at 10 top free-agent cornerback targets for the Vikings this off-season.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

Sad breaking news.
Regional jet from Kansas landing in DC collided with a Blackhawk Helicopter .
60 passengers on the Jet + 4 crew and 3 reported soldiers in the Blackhawk.
Plane and helicopter are in the Potomac River reportedly.

In the “a man can dream” realm, here are some folks I “wish” we could garner in free agency:

First, Trey Smith, Guard, KC Chiefs. Smith is a powerful mover in the run game, as his run block win rate of 75.1% ranks sixth among guards. In pass protection, he has the foot speed to mirror interior defenders and the strength at 6-6, 321 pounds to anchor against bull rushes. He’s 26, and unfortunately, given his traits and age, Smith should reset the market at the position. Still, I would want him on the Vikings O-line, like, immediately.

Second, D. J. Reed, CB, NY Jets. I think Reed is one of the best pure cover corners in the league, with press-man skills and the transition speed to break on the throw. Over his career he has 40 pass breakups, and six interceptions. He is a scheme-agnostic corner who can fit in multiple NFL systems.

Third, Osa Odighizuwa DT, Dallas Cowboys. Osa had 4.5 sacks this season, and his 30 pressures were tied for the second most among defensive tackles. Odighizuwa fits best as a 3-technique and can be a pass-rushing threat in nickel fronts. I like this guys motor, and he’s a handful at the line of scrimmage. Immediate upgrade to our defensive front.

If I were KAM, I would make a serious run at these guys.

At that mileage rate, and 67 cents a mile, you’re making over $4,600 a month on travel. That’s about $55K a year (more or less). Pretty fair income. Then your pay on top of that, sounds like a nice gig.

Anyway, I have no appetite – I basically choke down 1 piece of toast and 1 small bowl of soup a day. The depressing thing is I checked to see how much weight I could expect to lose on such a diet in 1 week. It said 2 pounds. That sucks, I was thinking it would be 5 to 10 pounds.

The lack of appetite suggests RSV, but symptoms are not always consistent.

Here’s a rundown of a symptom list for each (COVID, FLU A, RSV).

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?These are the main symptoms of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Symptoms appear anywhere from two to 14 days after someone has been exposed, the CDC says.
What are the symptoms of the flu?Flu symptoms tend to come on suddenly, according to the American Lung Association (ALA). They can include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Headaches, muscle aches, and joint pain
  • Cough that’s usually dry
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal congestion and runny nose
  • Muscle body aches and chills
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (this is more common in kids vs. adults)

What are the symptoms of RSV?RSV symptoms usually show up between four and six days after someone has been infected, the CDC says. They can include:

  • Runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing

If you can determine when you may have come in contact with whoever passed it on, that can help determine which ailment it is, in addition to symptom ID. You’ve been vaccinated for flu, so that decreases the chance it is Influenza, but doesn’t rule it out.

The flu vaccine is always at least 1-2 years behind the actual virus and therefore protects you from like 80% at best, assuming it works.

A Utah state senator wants to remove certain criminal offenses from the list of those requiring lifetime registration on the Sex, Kidnap, and Child Abuse Offender Registry, to a list requiring just a 10-year registration requirement.

Sen. Todd Weiler has worked on this multiple times. Should his ideas be enacted into law, it would allow an individual who has been required to register on the sex offender registry for life for a conviction, to petition for early removal, among other things.

Offenses that would change registry requirements include sexual abuse of a child, human trafficking, and child pornography crimes.

I don’t think this will make us safer, or more secure. I disagree with this elected official on his position.

My only issue with such crimes is when the ‘spouse’ in a divorce/custody proceedings makes an accusation about the father and gets the child to go along with it.
My daughter asked me questions of that nature after I divorced her mother. She believed my answers and dropped the subject. The questions were raised by her college professor in a Phycology Class.
So I guess I am biased since I see how easily that can go wrong.

I get you hate Cousins Surly, but he was the most productive QB in Vikings history. No Viking QB played as consistently well for over 5 years as Cousins, or put up numbers remotely as good as he did. He was always out there taking a pounding, and playing at a high level. You can “down” him all you want, but the reality is, he was one of the best Vikings QB’s ever. He averaged over 264 yards passing a game, and had a 101 passer rating across 88 games. That’s a whole lot of great QB play, you summarily dismiss.

Good center would help our less than stellar guard play.

I’m good with that. Expecting one player to make up for another players faults is a bad management plan.

So given our guard and center issues for years why hasn’t it been addressed?
Strikes me as kind of strange.

It has been addressed repeatedly. We have drafted players and signed free agents for years, trying to fix it. It has yet to be addressed successfully, but we did bring in two of the best offensive tackles in the league over the last few years. It’s a start.

Addressed – but not successful for guards and center.

So I guess they get an E for effort.
I would give them a D for results.
Maybe a C- with Brandel.

I believe the biggest challenge has been the Cap and being able to pay the price for good centers and guards.

A bill has been introduced in the California Legislature that would make fossil fuel companies liable for “major climate disasters.”

Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener, who co-introduced the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act, said SB 222 would shift the financial burden of disasters from homeowners to fossil fuel companies, thereby making victims “whole.”

Wow…

They should probably address the brush clearing too. 100 years of fire suppression practices has led to the fires being larger than “climate change”.

I was kinda miffed when that AP reporter (James Brady) asked Karoline Leavitt about providing the public the “unvarnished truth” from her podium. It was a seminal moment as far as I’m concerned, that went something like this:

AP Reporter: How can we be assured you’re not gonna lie?

Press Secretary: Actually it’s the MSM like you who have been lying for years.

Yeah… it’s like that.

I am fascinated that they are opening up media passes to social media personalities.

It is truly a seismic shift in news reporting.

I literally get all of my news from X now. I have not cracked a newspaper, turned on a news show or clicked on a legacy media website in a long, long time.

I’m not sure some of the talking heads are realizing how quickly they are being rendered irrelevant.

I have weather records for here going back to 1945.

Our record high for today is 48. Set last year. Previous record was 45 in 1990 and 1976.

Highest January temp was 65 on January 24, 1981.

I was alive, but I don’t remember that. My mom does, though. She went to a wedding anniversary that day in a summer dress.

Good morning all, and SKOL! I’m definitely not going to watch the Super Bowl. I don’t like either of the teams and the entertainment part of the “sports entertainment” spectacle they put on, doesn’t entertain me. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and I will be able to play golf.

in the next several months we’ll be treated to all sorts of stories on the great college athletes who will be stars in the NFL. The Vikings should do whatever is necessary to bolster the offensive and defensive lines in the next 5 months. Period.
