Tuesday

Happy Tuesday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

I watched the movie Sinister yesterday after reading that it was ranked as the scariest movie ever. I have to admit, it was a really good horror movie, and that’s coming from a huge fan of horror movies. I won’t say it’s better than The Exorcist (my favorite horror movie of all time) or anything like that, but it’s well worth a watch. If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend giving it a try. It’s the perfect time of year for it.

Another day along, another day closer to Vikings football. The Vikings play the Colts on Sunday Night Football, so we have a bit of a wait. In the meantime, we can engage in the usual rampant speculation, rumor mongering, and good old fashioned chicanary. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vikings/NFL News and Updates:

From Newsweek, Jordan Addison responded to trade rumors after people over-reacted to a harmless social media post.

CBS Sports provides us with an NFL week 8 injury tracker.

All the NFL week 8 scores and highlights, courtesy of NFL.com.

Also from NFL.com, the latest news from around the NFL.

Media Selection:

This is Heresy Financial. I like this guy, he has some interesting stuff on the financial markets. Not the usual same ol’, same ol’ that you hear from the networks. If nothing else, it gives you something to think about. Enjoy!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another

They went out and did something to potentially save the season. Good. Shows that they are dedicated and believe in themselves, IMHO. I like it.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing. Encouraging that they go out and DO something when the season is still more than salvageable after a devastating injury to a key player. Makes my night and lifts the spirits.

Looks like an ideal outcome for all parties involved, nice.

I see Diggs tore his ACL. Too bad, hate to see players go down. He was having a decent year, 18th in receiving yards, and probably just getting settled in the new offense, and QB.

Temps and weather in Tampa were very pleasant this morning so I went and played 18 holes at a course I had never played. I forgot my wallet, had to drive back home, and return, so I missed my tee time. The starter was great though and paired me up with a couple guys my age. We had a great, fun, round as we got to know each other. I shot 41-43 for an 84. We did play from the men’s white tees, not the back tees. They still had a 180 yard par 3 though, with water guarding the front and right side of the green, that was a challenge. I decided to lay up with an 8 iron, and pitch the ball over the water onto the green. Two putted for a bogey. Both my partners took double, as both hit their tee shots into the water, and didn’t get up and down successfully.

Made some new friends, played decently, and didn’t kill or maim anyone on the course. Good day.

Trivia Pursuit answer here…

Montana holds the U.S. (and perhaps world) record for the fastest rise in temperature over a 24-hour period. A downslope chinook wind event pushed the temperature at the town of Loma from -54°F at 9 am on January 14, 1972, to 49°F by 8 am on January 15th.

Also:

According to records, the greatest decrease in temperature within a single day occurred in Browning, Montana, where the temperature dropped 100°F (56°C) from 44°F to -56°F on January 23-24, 1916, due to a passing cold front; this is considered the world record for the sharpest temperature drop in a 24-hour period.

You are obviously about a 10 stroke better golfer than I am. But a 180 par 3 with water in front is right in my sweet spot. That’s a solid 4 hybrid that I can hit fairly high, and fairly consistently.

My problem is 110 to 160….I can no longer hit regular irons.

Well, I can tell you that as a matter of routine, any craniotomy performed for resection of an intraparenchymal tumor located near an eloquent center will take 12 hours or more to perform. Same with a spinal cord tumor. So there is one excuse for not voting in person. How about your child is hospitalized with a subdural hematoma and placed in medically induced coma? How about you are in labor? C’mon man, I could literally come up with 100 valid excuses just in the medical arena in less than 5 minutes.

If you federalize federal elections, the ” rules ” will very quickly mirror the rules of the most liberal state of the union.
Our system is not a majority of the votes. it’s winning the most electoral votes which is driven by winning individual states. So why that state say how it will regulate voting.

It happened because AOC and TW are a couple of slapdicks that don’t know what they’re doing……

0-0 happens when you’re fucking around and trying to ‘connect’ with a certain crowd – while being woefully unaware that Madden players are too smart to not immediately recognize you’re pandering to them.

I’d let AOC/TW pick my team….. and I’d smoke them both.

I’d smoke Kfey too.

Speaking of CC debt (long MT style boring tale to follow)…

I have a long history of paying my CC statement every month. In fact, I usually pay it the day I receive the bill so I don’t forget. I’ve had my Amex for 30+ years, etc.

I got a TSC (tractor supply) branded card as I shop there a lot for farm stuff and get discounts on dog food in their “neighbor club” faster using their card. They recently switched to a card issued by Citibank.

Long story short I did not receive a bill from them in September, nor did I notice I didn’t receive a bill. The October statement included a late charge for not making the minimum payment as well as significant interest charge, say something like $65 total. First time in my life.

Called and explained I didn’t get a statement. Beep boop beep okay we will reverse late charge but you still owe interest <grr> okay. They said to wait 48 hours to pay bill to allow late charge credit to process.

I pay bill on a Thursday morning. Friday morning my bank notifies me the bill has been paid.

I walk into TSC on Sunday, buy some saw blades. Run my CC – rejected – call vendor. They call vendor (line building up behind me), Citi wants to talk with me, give me the spiel that because my bill is overdue the card will be frozen until they get the minimum payment due of $whatever.

Personality flaw – I freak. Not freak as in I had a meltdown, but internally I am planning some Machiavellian takeover of Citi stock to bring them to their knees. I pay with my Amex, go stalking home, immediately get on phone while my wife tries to talk me off the cliff. Some Sri Lankan giving me the business, my wife is saying “tell her they said to wait 48 hours etc…” so I ask the rep if she can just talk directly to my wife (who is a master at these scenarios). Almost immediately the rep said that she was with collections and couldn’t answer my wife’s concerns.

What followed was one of the many things I so love about my wife. For the next 30 minutes, she started chopping down the tree the collections gal was climbing up, ended up with a citi rep from Virginia, both the late charge and interest reversed plus a $50 statement credit. Meanwhile I’m still huffing in the background “just cancel the f’ing card”.

Wrenage

That is pretty much what I would do…just cancel the card and escape with my rage. I view my time as more valuable than any hassle like that.

But my wife…she will spend a whole day to reverse a $20 charge, if necessary.

I can’t live like that.

I can remember in my 20’s I could walk on a bird hunt 10 miles easy on a warm day, carrying the shotgun, shells, birds, water for me and the dogs, etc.

Now by the end of six miles I’m pretty knackered. Plus I find excuses not to go out when the temps are in the 70’s (the Labs will get too hot, scent conditions are no good, etc). I find myself thinking do I really want to carry three pheasants all the way back home in this heat?

Often hearing your stories of working on the fences, greenbelt, misc chores around the house I often think ‘that is a lot more than I can do currently’.

I walk and do some upper body exercises but not nearly the level the Army/Prison required. Not unhealthy but not really ‘fit’ is how I would state my current fitness level.

Now hearing you say that walking while carrying some pheasant is a chore for you is surprising. 70s is cool for me, seems like I am missing something.

Yup, it is a combination of sore muscles as well as how quickly I can get the pheasant meat cooled down. Back in the day I could pretty well jog all the way back to the pickup with a handful of partridge, a couple of grouse and a couple of pheasants.

I can still cover lots of ground while actually hunting birds as that is a slower process, watching the dogs “birdiness”, letting them cast back and forth, investigating thickets, etc. But a six miler straight line over varied terrain – ugh I’m getting old.

When I hiked with the vizslas, I had them carry doggy first aid supplies and their water on a backpack. Hunting before the temps dip below 10 degrees is problematic as the dogs heat up fast (the rule of thumb is a dog covers 5 times the ground the hunter does), plus the backpack would likely get shredded, covered with mud, or soaking wet (or all three) even though the v’s are effete when it comes to thorns and thickets.

With the Labs, the backpack would be gone in 60 seconds as they have zero compunction blasting through any cover whatsoever.

In the current election year, the issue of our country’s potentially unsustainable level of national debt has largely been sidestepped by party leaders, likely due to politicians adjusting their policies to the desires of the electorate. In a democratic form of government, a nation’s leaders enact policies that please their constituents, or they will be replaced.

The natural conclusion is that the deficit spending that has occurred accurately reflects the will of the American people and is thus likely to continue. With elevated deficit spending appearing likely for at least the next four years, a problem arises as to how this spending will be paid for. Investors cheered the September rate cut by the Federal Reserve along with the prospect for future rate cuts. However, the sheer increase in outstanding debt (combined with the requirement to roll over existing debt that comes due) increases the likelihood that lenders will disregard Fed actions and demand higher interest rates to compensate for the additional credit risk of the U.S. government. Higher interest rates would only add to the significant fiscal challenges already faced by the nation while also increasing the borrowing costs for all individuals.

To avoid this unpopular scenario, politicians have historically decided to print money to finance budget deficits. Inflation is likely to follow.

Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League #8

We have reached the halfway point of the regular season (roughly). I did okay this week, coming in third in the weekly standings.

We had a lot of unanimousity or homogenousity or sameity in our picks this week. On paper, a lot of games seemed somewhat obvious. They didn’t all go that way, though.

This week I picked against Kirk, so of course the Falcons won. There is no getting around it. Kirk is the single most annoying player in the history of the world. I wonder what team will give him $100 million next…

Since there was so much parityity in the picks this week, not much happened for changes of positioning in the standings.

Little Fishin’ is still at the back of the pack, chasing the big boys. He does have youth on his side, though. He knows all of us will be drooling in wheelchairs soon, so all he has to do is wait for his opening to strike.

Freezy and JacksonVike are hanging out in 9 & 10. One bad pick, or one good one, could flip-flop them quite easily. Who will blink first? It is hard to tell since they are both Vikings fans. In that case, they will probably both blink at the same time and somehow both run into a wall.

I continue to be stuck in no man’s land at #9. I have a slight gap on the guys behind me. Yet, the guys in front of me have a gap on me that I can’t quite close. This is junior high all over again. Not geeky enough to excel at Knowledge Bowl and not cool enough to be acknowledged by the upper echelon. I’m stuck in the middle with Kirk.

3 through 7 is a proverbial cluster-bunch. NoDakRub, I’d rather be fishing, DE Viking, Surly Viking and Bowbunch only have a 14-point difference from top to bottom. I can’t tell who is who anymore. They have become a freakish blob of golfing, fishing, hunting and IPAs.

Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold has opened a slight 11-point gap on Kirk is still good in the 1 & 2 spots. Everyone needs to combine their psychic energy together and reel Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold back a smidge. Everyone concentrate on this thought, “Put 16 points on Carolina every week, Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold…”

We had two Genius Picks this week. DE Viking was the only one to pick the Rams over the Vikes. It appears that the days of automatically picking the Vikes to win are slipping into over. Meanwhile, Kirk is still good is the only one to get the Eagles over the Bengals.

We also had multiple Iconoclast Picks this week. Little Fishin’ was the only one to pick the Saints over the Chargers. Surly was the only one to pick the Seahags over the Bills. Jackson Vike was the only one to pick da Bears over Washington, and JacksonVike and Bowbunch were the only ones to pick the Cowgirls over the 49ers.

Everyone got a bunch of games right: Detroit over Tenn, GB over Jax, Houston over Indy, Denver over Carolina, KC over LV and Pit over NYG. Like I said, lot of easy games to pick this week.

Baltimore over Cleveland is the only game that everyone got wrong.

Onto Week #9. I can already tell Kirk is going to screw me again. The Falcons play the Cowboys. Cowboys suck, but if I pick Kirk, Falcons will suck worse.
