Wow, I’m watching the Lions-Packers game. Jordan Love really sucks, this is going to be fun to watch, the Packers are going to suck for a while. It’s well-deserved, their younger fans are spoiled and can be insufferable. A decade or so of misery will do them some good.

The Lions appear to be the real deal this year. However, my dad was a Lions fan, so I’ve been watching them for a long time, and one thing that I’ve learned is that the Lions will ALWAYS eventually Lion. Lions fans and Vikings fans share some misery, and have a little in common, but the Lions have basically had zero hope for as far back as my lifetime goes and further. The Vikings have years where fans, even the most crotchety, develop that deadly disease of hope. Then we get our souls crushed. At least the Lions never really have any hope. That may change this year.
The discussion topic of today is: Could this be the year that the Lions go all the way? If not, how will the Lions screw it up this time?

Ribeyes on the grill tonight. Yum.
We had those last night and they were absolutely perfect. Tonight its organic wild caught Atlantic Salmon from the EU on a big Greek salad with all the fixings. That is probably my favorite dinner because you go to bed, dream like a banshee from all the omegas, and wake up feeling like a million bucks from all the healthy ingredients.
My favorite cut of beef although I prefer bone-in when I can get it just for the bit of additional flavor. Those steaks look great though…nice marbling. My guess it that picture is a glamor shot though, so your actual steaks look different and you’re FOS.

Got me. Those are a glamor shot. It would take too much effort for me to take a picture of the ones I have. We buy a quarter beef each year and have it processed at a local butcher shop. The ones I have will do very well.
We have a specialty butcher shop and they have these dried aged bone in black angus ribeyes that are amazing off the grill. Expensive though I think it was $70 for two but they are thick.

Let me start by saying, I’m full of shit. So, proceed at your own risk. That said, like probably all of us, I’ve been spending a fair amount of time trying to figure out what the Vikings need to do to turn their season around (except for you “tank” fans which, BTW, you’re full of shit too). And I’ve come to a conclusion.
First, turnover differential is the main reason we are where we are. If we had averaged one less turnover per game, we’re likely 2-1, maybe 3-0. That said, we are where we are so, beyond fixing the turnover problem, what’s the next most important thing (and there are several possibilities to choose from)? I think the key is in KOC’s offensive game plan.
It’s been interesting to see how many analytics sites have come out over the past week suggesting, on the aggregate, our O-line is top 5. But that doesn’t pass our “fan eye test”…not even close. So, why is that? As easy as it may be to say those reports are full of shit (per Ben, we all are), there may be a reason for the disconnect. At some point, when analysts grade O-line, the responsibility shifts from the line to the “time to throw” which is a combination of the QB and the scheme.
Earlier this week, someone posted average time to throw stats and, IIRC, Kirk is in the bottom third of the league. Is some of this on him? Sure. But it’s not all on him…it’s also a side effect of KOC preferring long-developing, explosive plays. So, what’s my point?
Quick aside before I answer. I don’t remember why KOC didn’t make it as a QB in the league and I’ve never watched tape on him from San Diego State. But if I had to guess based on my experience with him as our HC, he was probably a guy that didn’t understand that sometimes, you just live to fight another day. In other words, and I may be totally wrong here, my assumption is he never wanted to just get rid of the ball or take the underneath route…he focused too much on the “big play” and it played a big role in ending his brief QB career.
Anyway, regardless, this is how he seems to run our offense. He’s too quick to give up on the run game and, other than his awful TE screens, he’s too greedy in the pass game. I’m not suggesting we shift to “dink & dunk” but I think a better balance of “possession ball” with “explosive ball” could help a lot.

I applaud your honesty! We all have our moments of bullshit because we are, for the most part if we admit it, emotionally tied to this historic dumpster fire of broken souls, dead fathers, brothers, uncles who also rooted and never got the pay off snakebit team. So yeah its a sensitive subject on many levels.
Turnovers are most definitely the biggest factor on the losses. If you put a percentage on how something negatively effects the game, turnovers are probably a 50% or more effect. You lose an entire possession and give an extra possession to the opponent. That’s huge. Layer on top of that if you’re in the RZ getting ready to put up points it probably goes to 80% negative effect especially if the other team goes down and scores and its a 10 or 14 point swing. You’re not likely winning that game unless you force some turnovers and we currently sit at a 1-9 turnover ratio. That is death on a cracker period.
The other stuff, untimely penalties, 3 and outs or 3rd down conversions or stopping the opponent on 3rd down all add up but can be overcome with playing even good complimentary football. We have the talent and can overcome that but not if you add in the turnovers. No chance.
In regards to KOC why he washed out as an NFL QB was as he stated he wasn’t accurate enough. You have one square foot windows you must be able to throw in to consistently to be a successful QB in this league. It is no joke so I laugh when I see the hate guys like Zach Wilson and many before him who have fantastic arms but just can’t deliver the ball in the exact spot consistently enough get. It’s hard, very hard with supreme 250-300 lbs cyborgs trying to kill you.
I’m actually a pretty simple guy. If I see, hear, smell BS…I call it out. Whether in person or, more often these days, online. I’ve always been that way, for better or worse.
That said, I know I could dial it back a bit. It’s just not really how I’m wired, but I’ll work on it. And, yes, some of my frustration stems from a lifetime of Vikings futility, which isn’t anyone’s fault but my own…I can’t quit this stupid team.
Take this for what it’s worth – free advice. I’m simple straight forward guy too. But as I have gotten older, and I mean older, I found sometimes what I thought was BS actually wasn’t. I wasn’t quite the oracle of knowledge I thought I was.

The offense does need more consistentcy and balance. We are far from dink and dunk but need some. At the same time, we seem to drop a fair amount of the short throws and don’t do a lot with the ball after catching it. All of this is fixable, it’s early and we have talent.
Defense which I think is better because they go after the ball better and actually tackle better. But we need some better adjustments. Once Phily adjusted, we stayed in the same defnse and they ran all over us And I thought the scheme for LA was actually self defeating. If you’re going to rush 6 and brin g pressure, you can’t play soft on the backside. and allow easy underneath throws. Hope Flores will get used to his people and adjust.
Having said this, KOC will keep the deep shots. That’s OK though.

I think maybe the best offensive play (not just because we scored a TD) from the Chargers game was the crossing route JJ ran, catching the ball in stride. That type of route, even on a shorter crosser, can allow Kirk to get the ball out of his hands and potentially generate positive YAC. Also, we desperately need to fix our screen game because, in general, it sucks.
Unlike the 4th and 6 which took forever.
I’m not as worried about protection as some (49ers?). But our line held up well enough in the Eagles game for Kirk to tun a pretty effective passing game – with no run game. We seemed to throw the ball all over the field.
Stop the turnovers and let’s see what we got.
Flores made an interesting comment this week regarding the Vikings having the highest blitz rate and with Herbert you have to pressure him and force him to get the ball out quicker but why it didn’t work is per Flores: “We didn’t make the plays”

Cuz I’m a suck I let my wife’s ex-husband talk me into not only helping put up a 1/4 mile of fence on my place but to purchase the posts and barbed wire. I’d like to say it’s 12 foot wire with outward facing concertina wire with razor barbs but in reality it’s a simple 4 wire 2 point fence for cattle. The old fence is in ba-a-a-ad shape.
He had originally told me that we would take down the old crap rez style (racist!) fence on Thursday but due to factors beyond our control he has decided to take down the old and put up the new on Saturday, I was informed last night. I informed him that I was walking in the breast cancer event in the morning with the rest of my department and I could tell that just bugged the crap out of him.
He is supplying his expertise and all the equipment for removing old fence and wire and replacing same, including some hydraulic whap-whap-whap equipment on his Bobcat. So we need to get the skid steer, an old grain truck (for the old posts and wire), and a side by side from his place and bring it to mine. My wife can run him back in our side by side to fetch his but the point was that I needed to drive either the skid steer (that won’t happen, he loves that thing) or the grain truck. I’m like okay as soon as I get back from the walk we will come down and I’ll drive the truck. He leaned over and says,
“Do you know how to drive a stick”
Being of sound mind, I know what it means when a rancher asks if you can drive a stick. Thanks to you guys I have a much thicker skin than I used to and I just chuckled and said, “Oh B____ you make me laugh”

Part of the deal with NFL+ get audio calls of ALL games. Way back in the day when I was a young and poor hammer I’d drive to the northern part of Lancaster County and sit in in old graveyard in the country and listen on 570 out of Yankton. Listened to many games amongst the dead. Fitting really….

My first dog (Zeus – a vizsla), he really taught me to hunt rather than the other way around. I would take him out in birdy fields day after day as a puppy and he really started to eye where I was and figure out how to push and then point the bird so I would praise him. The first time I downed a sharptail he looked at me like I was a god.
Had a bad day once, kept missing the pheasants. About the third time that happened he went after the bird. Would not answer the whistle and the last time I saw him was running over a hill a good mile away. Thought I lost him but started walking that way. What do I see but him coming back slowly towards me and as he drew closer I saw he had the (live) pheasant in his mouth. I thought we might have a problem after that, but thankfully I got my head out of my ass and started hitting them again after that.
Great story. When I was still in HS I had a Golden/Setter cross. He got so excited hunting and would range too far ahead, flushing partridges out of gun range. The one day we got to a good birdy spot and sure enough he dashed ahead, I heard a thunderchicken take off, started yelling at him.
He came back with it in his mouth – the brush must have slowed it down just enough for him to catch it.

I guess I will weigh in also. I was around last night when there was some sparring going on. Do I believe that NVF is who he says he is or not? I don’t know. I also don’t think I care. On the other hand, I do get it when there is someone that gives you that burr under your saddle. We probably have all been there when some person that most everyone else is fine with, just annoys us. We also should be civil however. We don’t all see eye to eye, but I don’t want anyone to be driven away because of disagreements. While I don’t necessary agree with all that NVF says, I do enjoy that he annoys the Kirk doomers. He is a good part of our community.

It’s a like a Tractor Supply Company. Lots of gear for outdoor types – in particular those who work in the elements. They sell all the usual stuff: farm/outdoor supplies, mowers, weed eaters, etc…. Got a little bit of everything. I’ve only seen them in SW Minnesota – Worthington and Windom in particular.

When my oldest son was just a little guy, I would turn on a hockey game and he would sit entranced by it. Probably part of the reason I’m not a big hockey fan is because I never played and because the North Stars moved. I do however like annoying people that enjoy hockey. That is fun.

Well…I think it has as much to do with the Packers decline especially at QB. Love looked absolutely unqualified last night.
