Minnesota Vikings Discussion

Not much news out there, lots of speculation about who the Vikings will target in free agency, and that’s about it. The Vikings have not re-signed any of their own free agents, but I doubt any of those guys will sign without testing the market to see what kind of contract offer they can get. Kwesi hasn’t shown any desire to offer more than a one or two year deal, and I’m guessing guys like Byron Murphy will want at least a 3-year deal, so it’s not shocking that they haven’t come to terms with any of those folks. We’ll have to wait until March 12th.

NLNVF posted a great comment late yesterday, a ‘wish list’, that I’m going to copy and paste here because I’m not sure how many of you saw it, and it’s well worth a read.

The following was posted by No Longer New Viking Fan:

In the “a man can dream” realm, here are some folks I “wish” we could garner in free agency:

First, Trey Smith, Guard, KC Chiefs. Smith is a powerful mover in the run game, as his run block win rate of 75.1% ranks sixth among guards. In pass protection, he has the foot speed to mirror interior defenders and the strength at 6-6, 321 pounds to anchor against bull rushes. He’s 26, and unfortunately, given his traits and age, Smith should reset the market at the position. Still, I would want him on the Vikings O-line, like, immediately.

Second, D. J. Reed, CB, NY Jets. I think Reed is one of the best pure cover corners in the league, with press-man skills and the transition speed to break on the throw. Over his career he has 40 pass breakups, and six interceptions. He is a scheme-agnostic corner who can fit in multiple NFL systems.

Third, Osa Odighizuwa DT, Dallas Cowboys. Osa had 4.5 sacks this season, and his 30 pressures were tied for the second most among defensive tackles. Odighizuwa fits best as a 3-technique and can be a pass-rushing threat in nickel fronts. I like this guys motor, and he’s a handful at the line of scrimmage. Immediate upgrade to our defensive front.

If I were KAM, I would make a serious run at these guys.

Vikings News

KX News thinks that trading down from 24 seems inevitable for the Minnesota Vikings. I think KX News is making the false assumption that the Vikings will enter the draft with the same number of draft picks that they possess right now, and I think it’s inevitable that the Vikings will make moves to procure more draft picks prior to the draft. I’m guessing one of us is incorrect.

Vikings.com looks at the linebackers, and also the outside linebackers in their 2024 Vikings position recap.

Jonathan Greenard joins ‘The Insiders’ at the Pro Bowl games, from NFL.com.

NFL News

CBS Sports lists 24 things to remember from the 2024 season.

Yahoo Sports grades every NFL coaching hire. Grading a coaching hire prior to seeing them coach a single game for that team is about as useless as grading a draft pick prior to that draft pick playing an NFL snap, IMO. Oh well, they need to have something on which to click.

Matthew Stafford plans to play in 2025, according to NFL.com. The headline doesn’t specify WHAT Stafford plans to play, whether it’s Monopoly, or pinochle, or football, or whatever, so you’ll have to read it to find out. Let me know!

Media Selection

This guy has some really good videos, all true stories, and this one is awesome. This is the story of Cassius Marcellus Clay, and I love this one. Oh, there is some NSFW language in this, so be warned, but also…….enjoy!

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.

  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

KX News thinks that trading down from 24 seems inevitable for the Minnesota Vikings

If I were KAM, I would not look for a trade with the 24th pick. If a team called me asking for a trade, I would do my best to fleece them. If he could trade back and stay in the 1st round and get maybe a 2nd or 3rd. Jump on it.

The can sign players to ‘Future Contracts’.

‘To be eligible for a reserve/future deal, players can’t be on an active roster when the season ends. Once a player signs such a contract, they are committed to join the team’s 90-man offseason roster when the new league year begins in March.’

Okay, so I should not be concerned that they have not signed any of the upcoming free agents? I understand that some of them are going to want to see what their market is, but I would think there are some that would prefer to stay in MN.

Players under a current contract cannot be signed until the new league year begins, and that contract expires, that is in March.

They can extend/sign their own players now as long as they are under contract.

Moral question –

I have one of my grandfather’s deer rifles. It’s a Winchester Model 1894 .32 Special, with a Lyman tang peep sight on it.

I will not use it. I don’t ‘collect’ guns. I am wicked accurate with the rifle I’ve used since Dad gave it to me on my 16th birthday, and I won’t use anything different unless mine gets stolen, and I would replace it with the exact same rifle.

I would really love one of them cheating fish finders that Minnesota is considering making illegal. It would be about an equal trade for one of the older models.

Do I sell/trade the gun?

Is Minn considering making the ‘selling’ of the fish finder illegal or the use of?

When my mother was cleaning out her house to move into assisted living she had a truly horrid set of formal dishes with a ‘bamboo design’.
She tried to sell them online and couldn’t so she offered them to family but only if they promised not to sell them.
She failed to see the illogic of that, but she can attach whatever conditions she wanted on the gift I guess.

The family who hunt and were a part of his life are pretty well stocked with guns. With Dad passing last week there will be several more rifles available as well.

I believe the push is to make ‘using’ the forward facing sonar devices illegal.

I don’t believe they should be illegal, but limit numbers must be decreased or we’ll end up with lakes full of rough fish only.

Of course, that will piss off the people who don’t have FFS, having lower limits because of the “rich folk and their toys.”

Not really. Fishing is fairly poor locally because I live in a higher populated area and relatively few lakes – the decent lakes get hammered. Good fishing is at least 90 minutes away.

We fish mostly “up north” – 2 hours away. We also take a few trips waaaaaaaaay up north – 5-6 hours drive.

There’s a good sized lake here within city limits. I’ve lived here for 25 years. I used to fish it a lot. In 25 years I’ve had 2 good days on the ice. Daily limit is 10 panfish in aggregate. The lower limit just hasn’t made the fishing any better because a jillion people fish it.

Last time I fished there I caught 3 perch.

3 weekends ago drove an hour away – son and I caught over 100, all tiny. Last weekend, I drove 90 minutes away. Fished 2 hours, son and I caught over 80 bluegill, kept 34 good sized fish, threw back a bunch of other keeper-sized fish.

I miss panfish, always a lot of fun. I quit fishing trout about 8 yrs ago because I got tired of floating rivers with 100’s of people. Way too many guides. Closest walleye water is about 2 hrs. Limit is 5 but only 1 can be over 15″. Doesn’t make sense to me, hasn’t seemed to change the age classes since implemented. I did get a 32″ out of there and daughter got a 30″

Had a similar situation: Late paternal uncle gave me a custom single shot scoped .223. Composite stock, sweet trigger. Shot many pdogs 150 yds +. Quit shooting it for a variety of reasons, mainly was shooting other stuff. Wanted to get Humminbird CHIRP with SI and DI etc. Wife wasn’t big on the upgrade. Asked my dad what he thought, he thought I’d use the Humminbird much more and the pistol would continue to sit. He thought his brother would approve. I sold and bought the fish finder. You looking at live scope?

I’ve been watching the coverage of the terrible accident last night. The commentary about what the helicopter was doing I think is off center. The helicopter was on a training flight, which the news folks inappropriately assume means the pilots were engaged in flight training, to improve, or maintain their skills. This isn’t quite right. This was a Continuity of Government (COG) training flight. COG flights by a military helicopter take specific Government officials including the President, away from the Capitol, in the swiftest possible means to preserve the function of the Government in times of crisis. Think of an impending nuclear attack on D.C. by an enemy to destroy the Government leadership. The military trains to take the Government leaders to specified safe spaces as quickly as possible, to maintain continuity of Government. By the way, night goggles are not viable in highly lit areas, basically blinding the wearer.

Lots of speculation going on here, that are missing the mark entirely.

These training flights go night and day JR. The flights are indeed conducted after midnight. The pilots fly in bad weather, and all times of the night and day, so if they are needed, they can execute at any time, and in any type of weather.

As a former Huey pilot this is a bad place or situation to be in. You (thses guys) are going about 110 mph and the Jet is going at 150, closing speed 260. Not much time for left or right. The jet is probably falling at over 100 feet per second. So really hard to adjust altitude that quickly. I’m saying by the time you’re ‘there’, you screwed.
Something is wrong. Put the black hawk on the far side of the Potomac at 200 feet and the planes will be at a higher elevation coming in or going out.

No. I was replying to NLV’s comment Continuity of Gov’t post. When they are in that situation, the airports shut down.
Now. I’m sure they are many shuddles daily of officials but doubt many of those are flying in the middle of the Potomac in the glide paths of in/out aircrafts. It’s a big river, lots of space.
Interestingly, just read on Fox this was a ‘night pilot certification’ which I think is different than what NLV is suggesting (maybe not though).
Additional the potential sec of Army is questioning this place/timing of training.

Ahh, my curiosity is satisfied…

The phrase “pushing the envelope” originates from the aviation industry, where an “envelope” refers to the limits of an aircraft’s performance, like its maximum speed and altitude; “pushing the envelope” therefore means to exceed those limits and fly an aircraft beyond its safe operating parameters, essentially testing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Long story, but I took the Air Traffic control test in 89, without knowledge that there was even a study guide. I did well(88 out of 100), and was scheduled to start training in Oklahoma in January 1990. I was very much looking forward to that job. It felt like playing Missile Command a bit, and I am sure I would have been good at it.

Never got my paperwork. Called in December 89 to see what the issue is.
“We are only taking female and minority candidates at this time”
I was incredulous, as I had turned down two job offers because of that career choice, and I was shocked that my score meant nothing. Anyone that fit the preferred profile only needed a score above 80.

I have hated all quota’s and DEI things since that day.
I would be fully retired now, if not for the need to please people on the left.
And yes, that was a Bush Sr mandate.

I hate all politicians.

Not getting that job maybe extended your life.
DJT just talked about that the stress from that job shortens life of air traffic controllers which is why we need the best and brightest doing the job. That is the opposite of DEI hiring practices like the ones you experienced.

Thank you for that commentary Surly. It was bad 25 years ago, as the military was indeed directed to increase the numbers of women and people of color in those days. Still surprising in regards to Air Traffic controllers, because the FAA requirements are pretty strict.

Having landed at Reagan many times do not at all understand how this can happen. This is a very busy airport and with all the restricted air space around there, the Potomac North and South is all there is. What was an Army helicopter doing in this air space?

They were on a training flight, normal for that area.
They are supposed to stay to a certain corridor and hight. I have heard that their ceiling is suppose to be about 200ft and the crash occurred at about 350′.

My wife has a friend that insists on going to eat with us on occasion. She is normally a decent person, but when she goes out to eat, something changes. For one, she can never order off a menu, everything she orders has to have either something removed or substituted. If there is a small thing on a menu or a special that does not make sense, she makes a big deal about it. Or, she will be the first to complain about how long it takes to get food, even if the place is busy.

As a former restaurant owner and service worker, I just want to explode every time we go to eat with them. My tongue is bloody from biting it the whole time.

I reviewed The Killer. Mostly because they needed an article today.

I find that movie infinitely rewatchable. I think it is because it speaks my my ideal existence: not to be a killer, but to live a lifestyle without extras, so I can concentrate completely on my interests.

Yet, it is flawed, no doubt.

And, we got the Culligan system 25 years ago. I have looked at buying a new system several times over the years, but I keep delaying that in the hope that my wife will finally want to move to a warmer climate.

I hate spending money on the current house, since I want to leave. Since my wife gets her way, I will probably die in this house.

We have a whole house Express Water system that I picked up on Amerzon after reading reviews, pretty easy to install if you have intermediate plumbing skills (if not call a plumber, it is tied in to your main line). Then I have an RO system plumbed to the fridge and kitchen sink with that little 1/4″ propylene stuff called iSpring that I also picked up on Amerzon and was pretty easy to install if you have basic plumbing skills.

Get an RO system. Pretty easy to install. When I put one in, my wife “got mad” because I ruined the taste of water. I don’t use the “re-mineralizer” filter. I like the water just pure and clean.

Hey GF, kind of flattered you used my comments I posted last night in your discussion points above. You also mentioned that KAM is averse to long term contracts. The Vikings have reportedly had extension talks with Byron Murphy. This is KAM’s M.O. He will extend a players contract, vice offering them a 3 year deal. This gives the GM the most flexibility with managing the roster, but it gives the players the least sense of commitment or security. We’ll see how KAM moves forward with the roster, and we can discuss his methodology over the next few months. Players want a team to commit to them, but GM’s prefer not to. Just business.

Liked your pickup choices. After these three maybe get a just an above average second guard.
Don’t know enough to comment about the contract stuff.

Honestly, we need a far better center as well. Darrisaw and O’Neill are as good as it gets in the league when it comes to our starting tackles. The interior of the line though needs to be built up. The offense has all the skill players they need, with Jets, Addison, Hock, and Jones, as our key weapons. McCarthy should have open targets to throw to, if his protection holds up.

KAM simply must address the interior of the O-line, if he intends to start McCarthy this coming season.

I am willing to suggest that Bradbury will be good enough WHEN we have better LG and RG. i feel like having BRUTAL IOL makes bradbury look worse than he is.

but that’s just me. i’m not GM or NFL scout

I think improving the line is a big deal if we really want to go far. And I’d go as far to suggest trading one of our skill players, like JA, to pick up some talent in the line.
