Happy Thorsday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation. As always, remember to be cool to one another.

We’re nearing the end of another week, the weekend looms just ahead. I’m ready for one. I’ve been crazy busy with the new business, and the new business is generating a bunch of new listings for us, so my wife is as busy as I am or busier. It’s been a crazy couple of months, it doesn’t seem like we’ve stopped to breathe. We’re both taking the weekend off, much needed.

Man, I’m slipping. I’m normally one of the first people to get Christmas lights up on the house, but this year, I’m way behind the 8 ball. We’ve been so busy with the new business that I haven’t put them up yet. We’re gonna get them done on Saturday, it’s supposed to be 40 with little wind, and there’s no snow/ice on the ground & roof. I think I’m going to rent one of those smaller man-lifts that can be towed behind a pickup. I’m hoping it saves some time, because it’s usually a full day and another partial day to put them all up. I’d love to cut it down to one day somehow, and putting up fewer lights isn’t an option. Go big or go home.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

What do you want the Vikings to do as a long-term solution at quarterback? Do you think they have him on the roster? Do you want them to re-sign Kirk (kfey, I know you do)? Do you want them to find him in the draft? Trade? Free Agent? Anyone in particular you fancy at the moment?

Minnesota Vikings News:

The Vikings are evaluating 2024 draft candidate QBs Jayden Daniels and J.J. McCarthy, according to SI.com.

Here’s another one they can look at. Clemson QB Nate Wiggins has decided to leave early and enter the 2024 NFL draft, per ESPN.

A new book, ‘The NFL Off Camera’, spotlights legendary Vikings, from Vikings.com.

At SI.com, Matthew Collier discusses who should be the Vikings starting quarterback.

NFL.com brings you the NFL-wide week 13 NFL injury report.

From CBS Sports, Joe Flacco is taking first team reps and may start for the Browns this week against the Rams.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

This weekend is Christmas tree and house decorations weekend for us. I have all the presents for my wife and son, just need to wrap them.

My son has a new girlfriend (about two weeks) and I’m trying to decide if I should put something under the tree for her, in case she shows up with him for Christmas. She seems really sweet, but only met her once.

Just read this sentence in a e-novel that threw me.

“Slowly, as if he were handling a live grenade, Joe placed the map gently in his lap.”

Yeah because that is what I want to do with a ‘live grenade’ put it in my lap??

If that contract is with the Vikings, I will be here daily to lament the Kwesi mistake.

If it is with a different team, the only regret would be if that team wins a championship. Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon got their trophy after leaving this team. It can happen again.

I only participated once, when I was in Basic. Final inspection and I had all of my shit in line. Asked my range buddy if he needed any help, he was the victim of several parties, and he said no. I checked in with him a few times, and he kept telling me no.

Inspection time came, Captain, 1st Sgt, and Drill Sgt come through. They inspect my locker and bed, walk over to his, ask him a couple of questions. I hear my name and Drill Sgt comes over and flips my cot. Found out later he said that he asked me several times for help, but I refused.

Needless to say, my socks were full of bars of soap that night.

Kirk winning the SB with the Peckers is not going to happen. If he does not sign with the Vikings he will not sign until somebody’s QB gets hurt or he will be on 1 year deals on shit teams a la Matt Ryan.

Well – heard an interesting SF story last week. Shanahan is like 1-37 when trailing in fourth quarter by 3 and o-33 when by seven. One reason given is he has had QB’s that lack real arm talent and this gets magnified when losing under pressure.
If they lose at the end because Purdy can’t perform late, don’t be surprised.

I forgot about Marshall’s, they (and TJMaxx/Home Goods) have the worst return policy ever. Even if you have your receipt they say you have to have the card you used if you paid by credit, otherwise they will only give you store credit gift card that they write your name on and if your ID doesn’t match the name they won’t let you use it. Anyway, jokes on them because I realized a few months you can actually use any card for a refund and it’ll refund to that card account.

I love all the rocky movies except for V. Sly made a lot of good movies, especially ones he wrote himself. He kinda lost his way there for a while in the late 80s and early 90s when he starred in horrible movies like Oscar and Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot, but he got back to doing what he does best with Rocky Balboa, Rambo, The Expendables franchise, and then the Creed movies. Between Rocky, Rambo, and The Expendables franchises, almost all of which he either wrote and/or directed, he’s probably the most successful filmmaker in terms of film franchises. I thought he was really good in Cop Land too.

My baby sister, the youngest of us all is a wonderful person and mother who had her own issues in her early 20’s but has turned into an incredible human on the cusp of her 40’s. I love them both, but desire to only see the baby and to never lay eyes on the middle child again.

Pretty much. I can’t really begin to describe how awful my sister is. Here’s a shot:

When my mom was diagnosed with cancer she was fearful of leaving behind a bunch of debt so she cashed her 401k in early and paid bills for her treatment as they came (good insurance, but still but everything was covered) she also gave large monetary gifts to both of my sisters. She offered it to me several times and I didn’t take it – not that I didn’t need it, it just didn’t feel right – she was dying and scared and how do I dare profit from that? Well my middle sister did. And then asked for more. Again and again. Then the cancer went into remission and tax time came and as it turns out my mother was unaware of the penalties and fines that would incur from pulling her 401k – she was on a lot of drugs at that time – so the IRS decided to kick my parents in the teeth to the tune of a $35,000 penalty. After a handful of attorneys, accountants and one local politician went to bat for her the fine was reduced to a manageable $3,000.. but lesson learned and she cut off the tap. Now I didn’t take any money so it didn’t affect me and my baby sister offered to pay my mother back. What did middle sis do? Doubled down. Asked for more. Said they clearly had it, would be hers eventually thru inheritance and if she ever wanted to see her grandchildren again she’d fork over the cash – I was standing in my mothers office when she took that call on speakerphone.

Your sister sounds like an addict. Addicts will do or say just about anything for their next fix.

My aunt was similar. She did all she could to ‘milk’ my grandmother. My mom was the Executor of my Grandmothers will so she just kept all the receipts and when it was time to disperse the ‘inheritance’ she subtracted all of that from her total.
Yeah, she (and her daughter) were a piece of work. I say ‘were’ because we have had no contact with them since then.

I’m certain she knew…. it’s made pretty clear to anyone with a 401k that there’s a penalty – I don’t think she knew the penalty would be so severe and I don’t think she thought she’d be alive to deal with it and that whatever the penalty was there was life insurance to cover it and the benefit of giving out the cash short term outweighed (in her mind, anyway) the costs/penalties.

Yeah, I have issues with my sisters as well. The older one, middle child, lives 15 minutes away from me but hasn’t spoken to me directly in 6 years, I’ve called, texted, send cards, etc. but she won’t respond and has never met my children aged 4 and 1 despite living 10 miles away from me. We used to be very close, I lived with her when I moved back to MN 7 years ago but once I got married and moved out she just cut off all communication and blocked me on everything. My younger sister is just a complete spoiled brat who has literally been given everything she has ever asked for by my parents (technically she is my half sister and the only child of my stepmom), though at least she speaks to me, so there’s that.

I’m in the little contact with my sisters club as well. They both live in Calgary and often talk of coming to visit me but to this point in my life it is only if I travel to them that I see them…plus I have to put in the effort even when I’m in the city to go see them wherever works best for their busy schedules. My half sister is older and I didn’t meet her until I was in my 40’s, she is very sweet but there’s not a lot of common ground to discuss, and my sister is 10 years younger than I and has always harbored a grudge that I left home for college when I was 17 and she was 7.

Werid I had a very similar situation when I was about 25 I learned I had a half brother 11 years older than me that my family never had anything to do with, shortly after he was born his maternal grandparents adopted him and my dad never spoke of him to any of us kids. But good on you for not enabling. It can be tough. I know I enabled behaviors of my drunken ex by swooping in and saving her drunken ass way too many times.

But sometimes you just have to let them lay in the bed they made.

My ongoing family drama is I have a cousin who is staying at my grandmas in a SHITTY old broken down camper that is really her dads. Her dad has had 3 strokes and lives in the house with grandma. Cousin and her boyfriend stole thousands of dollars from her dad and replaced the money they stole with fake bills. Didn’t think he’d notice, well he went to deposit it. He for some reason wouldn’t deposit until he had a bunch of money, saved him trips into town. Grandma won’t kick her ass out because she lives in that damn camper with like 4 or 5 kids (none of which are the boyfriends kids). Boyfriend not long ago stole a Harley from a dealership while leaving his dogs in the car in the heat of the day, drove it out to my grandparents and left the bike hidden in the woods, small grove between my parent’s house and my grand parents. Grandma needs to kick her ass off her property damnit. We keep telling her to but she won’t.

Mullens has been much better at throwing the ball in his career than Dobbs ever has. Mullens has thrown for a ton of yards and TD’s as a starter. He has also thrown a ton of interceptions though. The question is, has he learned enough from being around Cousins and KOC to make fewer mistakes with ball? If so, he could do enough on offense to let the defense carry the day.

If you watch Dobbs on a typical pass play, he sets up really deep…like 10ish yards back and holds the ball longer than Kirk did.
He has a tendency to try and bail out by running back and then to a sideline. Denver figured out how to pressure and contain him late in the game, and Chicago capitalized on it.
Chicago schemed this well.
Statistically, Sweat gave O’Neil one of his worst pass blocking games.
But if you watch a few replays Sweat would just line up wide and run to the 10-12 yard mark where Dobbs would be at.
It was very difficult for O’Neill to get out that far and make that block.
Sweat is a good player, but most teams have a speedy edge who can out rub O’Neill on a really deep drop.

We countered in the second by running through the tackle and got nice gains. But unfortunately the tape is out on how to pressure and contain Dobbs.

Chicago is one of the worst pressure defenses, and they looked like one of the best.
The line didn’t have their best game, but some is on Dobbs.

He did. But at the time Hall was named starter we had just acquired Dobbs, Mullens was still hurt so KOC’s options were Hall or Mannion. I think Hall being EQB last week is a pretty clear indicator of the pecking order. I’m guessing Mullens starts going forward. I’d rather see Hall – but Minny still in contention – not exactly time to ‘see what you got…’

Hey BSF, in response to your question yesterday, I was in Uppsala back in July. We were just passing through however, so we were only there for a few hours. We had been in Örebro, the area where my great-grandmother grew up, and were heading back to Stockholm. We took a little detour to go through Uppsala because my sister wanted to stop at the university and talk genealogy with someone. After that we had lunch with a pastor from our church organization at a neat little restaurant and then we went and toured the Swedish National Cathedral, which is beautiful. As it is in any of the cities in Sweden, parking is a nightmare. However, once we stopped at the pastor’s apartment, we were able to walk to the restaurant and to the cathedral. If you are going to be there a week, you could probably rent a bike. There were lots and lots of bikes in the section of town that we were in.

Good morning.

My QB choice for next year?
Not Kirk.

It would be nice to get more work in for Hall, to see if he can become a decent starter.
Dobbs is a backup. I am fine if he is on the roster as a backup, but if they start next September with him as the starter, the hope will be over before the season starts.

If they start the season with Kirk as the starter, we know he will put up good numbers, get sacked too often, and make a boneheaded play in a playoff game to end the season.

We want something else (MASH reference for old people)

I seriously doubt Cousins will be a Viking next year. Folks who are discontented with him will get their wish. I do think this year, with the defense starting to really flourish, and Cousins producing TD’s at a higher rate than pretty much all the other QB’s in theague, the Vikings actually might could have made it to the Super Bowl. Definitely not the odds on favorite of course, but think the 2007 Giants, who backed into the playoff’s and won three playoff games on the road, and then beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Technically the Vikings could still pull off a season like that, but I don’t think we have a QB on the roster who can get the job done. Cousins definitely could have in my opinion though.

I think Super Bowl would be a huge stretch with this team after the 0-3 start.
With or without Kirk.
While the defense is playing well above the talent on the roster, breakdowns happen, and eventually the team would have to face a very good QB that would tear them apart, or a smothering defense that would dominate the game.

Both O line and D line seem to disappear too often.
There are too many holes to fill on this roster, and next season I will be complaining about JJ’s inflated contract as the reason for those gaps in talent.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Surly Viking
30 November 2023 6:50 am

I agree with you on those fronts, but the 2007 Giants had a similar situation. No one thought they would win a single playoff game, much less win the Super Bowl. But they did.

I’m saying I think they “could have” won the Super Bowl this year with Cousins. I say that because of the defense, and because Cousins was playing at a very high level. Whether or not folks like it, Cousins is one of the best QB’s in the league. Since he came to the Vikings in 2018 and through 2022, only three QB’s in the league threw more TD’s than Cousins. The Vikings have had a top shelf QB under center for them for the last 6 seasons. They will be very lucky if they find a replacement that can match him.

Surly Viking

The front office failed to provide what Kirk needs to succeed. A dominating O line. Kirk’s massive contracts have been part of that reason, and GMs being bad at drafting / bringing in talent is the other part.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Surly Viking
30 November 2023 7:48 am

Ummmm that seems like a false narrative completely to me. Cousins has been the most productive QB over a 5 year span in Vikings history, despite the poor O-lines in front of him. Could he have done more behind a better line? Absolutely. But the weak running game and defense has been the Achilles heel of this team, not the QB. The team has invested MANY draft picks on the defense and the O-line that have not panned out. Bradberry leaps to mind…

No, under scrutiny, your narrative doesn’t hold water. Cousins “massive” contract has not held this team back. Bad drafting and bad play by the O-line and the defense (as well as the worst kicker in the league) are the reasons the Vikings have not won more games.

With Cousins injury and the dynamics around the timing of everything and free agents, I think there is a reasonable chance Cousins is re-signed. If Kirk didn’t get hurt, I would absolutely agree that Cousins would be gone.

The injury has changed everything.

There have been average QBs who have made it to the SB (and won) with a good team and Good QBs who never made it (Dan Fouts for example).

So a QB is part of the equation but not all of it.

Since KC is part of the team still (allegedly) spitballing a way to get the team there is not unrealistic.

Poo-pooing every mention of QB by ‘sharing your opinion’ gets old.

I don’t know what metric was used, but the offenses purpose is to score points, they’ve been in the 22 ppg area all year, including when jesus christ on a football field Kirk Cousins was playing, which puts them right in the middle of the pack, or another way to put it is average. Even when JJ and Kirk were playing it was 22 ppg, or again, average.

With our “average” offense, four fumbles and no running game, how did we put 28 on the Eagles?

The Vikings had zero chance at making the SB with Cousins, in fact they had a losing record while he was playing. Not saying its his fault, but they were 3-4 when he went down, so yeah, nowhere near SB caliber team. I’m not sure what is in the cards for Kirk moving forward, but it would not shock me if he somehow re-signed with the Vikings.

No longer New Vikings Fan

They were 4-4 after the Packer game, so they were 3-4 going into it. The reasons for the losses early in the year were clearly turnovers, so they were anomalies. Our turnover rate was somewhat unfathomable. Cousins threw for 9 TD’s and 1,075 yards in the first three games.

Now, in the part of the season where the Vikings are playing weaker opponents and the defense is shining, I feel strongly we would have won the last four games going away, and the Vikings would be sitting at 8-4 under Cousins. The next couple games would be extremely winnable, setting the Vikings up to go into the last three games at 10-4. With Cousins and the defense playing well, I think we win the last three, go 13-4, win the Division, and have a chance in the playoff’s to make some noise.

None of that reasoning is hugely flawed. The Vikings were just starting to surge when Cousins went down. I think they would have gotten better and better as the games went on.

Since this kind of arguments are sort of who really knows, but my 2 cents.
Think the Niners and Eagles are the class of the league (No Cowboys).
We played both of these teams. Hung with both despite four fumbles against Eagles and Flores finding his defense. Niners, well we beat them and their great defense didn’t seem to have answers for our offense (without JJ).
As Tom Brady recently said, the most talented team doesn’t win, the team that plays the best football does.
The way our offense was playing, coupled with the surge in our defense, we would have been a tough play for anyone in the playoffs.

Cousins will be recovered in about 8 weeks and able to play well before March. Not sure where your logic is coming from?

Regardless, Achilles injuries are not the death knell for QB’s that they might be for other positions on the field. Especially for pocket passers. Cousins does not beat defenses with his feet, he beats them with his brain and arm talent. Much like Brady, he can play well into his 40’s if he chooses to do so.

Might not beat defenses with his feet, but he needs that right leg to be able to throw with power and that muscle on the back of the bottom half of his leg is pretty integral to that power. It should really be connected on both ends and healed properly. I think Rodgers’ is his left leg so less of an issue. Kirk’s is his right so needs to be fully healed or pop goes the weasel.

Well the history of recovering and playing is much longer than you claim.

Will Dissly from 2020.

Nine months after rupturing his Achilles tendon, tight end Will Dissly was able to pass his physical upon reporting to training camp.

https://www.seahawks.com/news/seahawks-te-will-dissly-passes-physical-rb-rashaad-penny-opens-camp-on-pup-list

I highly doubt Cousins can even pass a physical before June. So Cousins ability to sign a big contract is going to be limited. I doubt any team signs him until he passes a physical. Therefore, the Vikings are probably the favorite to re-sign Cousins.

Being healed and playing are two different things.
