Trade Deadline
As mentioned, it is Halloween today. More importantly for Vikings fans, it’s also NFL trade deadline day. Teams have until 3 pm Central time today to complete trades, and as you may have heard, the Vikings are allegedly trying to find a QB prior to then. I seriously doubt that the team will find a legitimate QB to lead the Vikings through the remainder of the year and hopefully the playoffs, because if another team has such a player on their team, it seems illogical to think they would be willing to part with him. The most common name being mentioned as a possible trade is Kyler Murray. I’m not a fan of that option, as the team would be giving up a lot to get a QB who just isn’t worth it. You might say that the change of scenery is what Murray needs, and you may be right, but that’s a big gamble considering his inconsistent production and some of the rumors about his preparedness.
Free Agency
I think the more likely scenario is that the Vikings will sign a free agent QB who can hopefully take the reigns from Hall, if that becomes necessary. If it were up to me, I’d have signed Carson Wentz already. There are rumors galore everywhere you look. The names I’ve heard frequently are Colt McCoy, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, and Wentz. The Vikings are an attractive spot for a quarterback, as he’d be leading an offense with major talent at the skill positions and a strong offensive line (it still feels weird to type that). The team also has a strong defense to boot, and they’re riding a 4-game winning streak and are in the playoff picture.
Another thing to remember is that the Vikings have Nick Mullens on the roster, and he’ll be eligible to come off of injured reserve in week 10. I haven’t heard whether he’ll be ready to play by week 11, but he is eligible to come off IR by then. If he will be ready, the Vikings may feel that he and Hall give the team the best shot of success. Any QB they bring in would have to try to learn the offense on the fly, where Mullens and Hall obviously already have experience in the system.
I’m not sure what to expect, but we’ll know by 3:00 this afternoon whether they’re going to try to upgrade the QB position via trade. One thing that I know for certain is that I DO NOT want to see Mannion take another snap for the Vikings.

Very busy day. I did see an alert that we traded for a qb. I didn’t see any of the specifics. What is the consensus? We hate it or love it?
We got Dobby, don´t gift him any socks.
He was cheap, him and a 7th rounder for our 6th.
He is better than Mannion so he gives up options if Hall fails and Mullins is still not ready/healed up.

The discussion took into consideration that he’ll be coming off an Achilles repair and has expressed his desire to stay in Minnesota. He may very well choose to test the market, whatever it may be, for a 36 year old QB coming off an Achilles tear. He’s likely got 2/3 years left tops and may not have the same price tag he once did.
The scenario isn’t as far fetched or laughable as you’re making it out to be.

Yeah, that’s where I wanted to see any extension anyway, so other than ending this year the injury may work out cap/contract wise better for the Vikings.
I’m all for extending him for 2 @ 20/25m per – provided they draft QBOTF in ‘24 and the deal isn’t guaranteed or doesn’t include a NTC so if said QBOTF is ready they can cut bait/find a trade partner.
At 20/25 that isn’t that terrible as a backup either. Maybe set it up where 2024 the salary is a little higher and there’s incentives and 2025 the guaranteed salary is closer to backup money with incentives for starting, etc.

Reminded me of something I read a year or so ago, don’t remember the author, but thought it was different and sort of neat.
It was talking about why Shanahan/McKay wanted a certain type of QB and a comparison of Stafford and Murray (he was considered good then)
The idea was Stafford was a cook and Murray was a Chief. Stafford could give you bacon eggs and hamburgers but limited beyond that. Murray could give you a soffle but may miss on the hamburger.
Going on with it, Shanahan and McVay want a cook – read the defense, go thru the keys, deliver an accurate pass to the right guy on time. Author pointed out this is not easy – a lot of the so called chiefs can’t do it. And that Tom Brady was the best cook of all time.
Going forward, looking at our offense and the talent we have at WR and TE, think next QB should be a good cook. OK if they have some chief in them, but at heart be a very good cook first and foremost.
Sort of a different thought for what it’s worth..

I’d call guys like Stafford, Kirk, etc more bakers. Need to stick to the recipe or things go haywire. When you’re cooking, a good chef can throw things together and give you a gourmet meal. Just depends on if your offense is a cake or a main course.
It’s more than that.
Maybe go back and listen to Nick Bosa’s presser after 49er game.
He was talking about how they were changing defenses at the line, but Kirk would move personnel, change the blocking and then audible into a play that put the defense into a disadvantage.
As such, they set things up so they don’t go haywire.
And this staying on script, all the reads and progressions, defenses jumpiing coverages etc, is far far harder than people realize.
Guys like Murray, the Chiefs that can throw things together and make the highlight reel plays, can’t do the “cook” things that well. And that’s the problem and why the Shanahans want a cook.
I think we are agreeing on everything but what a cook is. A cook to me is a less talented chef. What you are calling a cook, I would compare more to a baker. Baking takes more precision, timing and understanding of the different components and sticking to plan more. Cooking can turn out good by throwing stuff together.
Fair enough.
If Hall can just be a pretty good “cook” or “baker”, we’ll be fine.
Based on that analogy the current Vikings QBs are three dishwashers.
Let’s hope not. Hall has been in QB room all year. Just run the offense and do the basics well – he’ll be fine. Get the ball to our skill guys and let them make the plays.
Hoping his mobility helps WR’s get open, he still has to find them.

Most exciting today we didn’t give up a high pick. Stretch looks bleak to me. Mattison average 1.9 Sunday and KOC will go right back to him at Atlanta.
Vikings are currently #5 on offense and #10 on defense (based on yards per play)….This is the kind of well balanced team that can make a deep playoff run.

Thanks for the Hall highlights from BYU posted below. I don’t remember anything about him, but the draft was in the middle of the our move, and that time is just a blur. The only thing I remember about Dobbs is that he got benched in AZ. Happy we didn’t do a Bradford type trade though.
AZ traded for Dobbs at the end of training camp because Murray is still out. Murray is supposed to be back this week or next week though so they don’t need Dobbs. I think Dobbs started for Baltimore or somebody at the end of last year.
I believe Dobbs is 1 and 9 as a starter……but he has just never been in the right system.

From everything I’ve heard, despite the obvious physical limitations, he’s a consummate pro and he’s pretty good at adapting to a new playbook relatively quickly. Stands to reason having been on multiple teams and having been traded multiple times. I’m guessing he’ll get up to speed quicker than most.

The defense being better because of Flores has allowed us to play more complimentary football. Hold the ball longer on offense, even if we have to pass it to do so because Mattison sucks.
Curious – How does Flores and the defense help offense “hold” blll longer. Without running game, it seemed like Kirk hitting a lot of 3rd down passes for 1st downs.
I think it was more of a the offense is holding the ball better and the defense has also improved so we are playing more complimentary football. Phone rang in the middle of it. He didn’t say the Mattison sucks part, but he did say the even if we have to pass it to keep it.

Went to a Halloween party Friday. The hosts, this was their costume as well haha. My wife was sick so I went solo… The hosts brother’s wife didn’t know me at all but tried hooking me up with a 23 year old. She calls me over, asks what I do for a living and my age. She goes, this girl here is 23 and she said 37 isn’t a problem, isn’t she cute? And she goes to her, isn’t he cute? I said, yes she is but I am married, and she goes, “Bullshit, no you’re not, show me pictures.” So I pull up my phone and did. The thing I found the funniest was when she saw my pictures of my wife and I she got disappointed and in a disappointed voice goes ugh, she is cute… like what? If my wife was ugly she would have been like, she ugly, go for this girl right here… haha. I felt bad for the girl next to her, she was embarrassed and it wasn’t her fault.
