Weekend thread
Hey mods….
GM!
FTP
Where is our Weekend thread?
Morning Surly… this might be the weekend thread.
Good morning all and SKOL. The Steelers and the Ravens play at 4:30 today (EST) and then the Colts and the Texans play in the evening game. I’m sticking with purple now, and hope the Ravens win the Super Bowl. My wife is a Ravens fan so each Sunday we have cheered for the purple teams. Unfortunately “my” purple team is pretty much done for this year, barring a miracle. So, go John Harbaugh, go Lamar, go Dalvin!!!
In typical Jets like fashion see our last week’s starting QB has been demoted to the number 3 position this week.
Seems like KOC has a QB Dartboard to decide who will start/backup/emergency positions.
To hear his reasoning wold make any DC politician proud .
Well, he does suck
Which one, or should I ask sucks worse.
Mullens apparently sucks the least
This is wild, calling your boss a rat…
https://x.com/claytravis/status/1743382096297468270?s=46
I always thought him going to Woke ESPN was a mistake.
I don’t think it was for him, he got a ton of money and a bigger audience to grow his brand even more, and the truth is ESPN needs him way more than he needs them.
Yep, bingo.
Yep, sold his soul, and now there’s a clash because McAfee can’t be tamed. Who could have predicted that?
From what I’ve read, he was guaranteed to run his show as he saw fit, ESPN only had the rights to broadcast it in addition to his already established platforms. Also apparently the CEO of Disney Iger was the one to broker the deal over objections from people like the the guy allegedly trying to sabotage his show. Apparently that guy also alienated super left wing people like Dan Lebatard and Jemele Hill
Good for him.
Agreed if you listen, that boss has been a dick to him since 2018
Prediction time…
Lions pull their starters after getting up by 20.
Final score Lions 30 Vikings 13.
24 – 20 Lions
That might be easier to take than the wrenching drama of a last second Int to end the season.
Vikings 24 lions 27
Going out on a limb. Kitties cover.
That is indeed a bold call.
Vikings 23
Lions 20
I think it’ll be higher scoring than that
Just when everyone bails on the Vikings, they show up to surprise you.
Lose our tackles? Bradburied left to anchor line? LMAO.
O’neill out, Darrisaw/Ingram questionable.
Looks like Mullins could be running for his life.
The Ravens signing Dalvin Cook could just be what the doctor ordered. Cook had his damaged shoulder surgically repaired this off-season, has been on a team all year (so he’s in football shape), and hasn’t hardly been used at all (fresh legs). Now he’s going to a team with the best O-line in the league, who love to run the ball. After all he’s been through, being released, and signing with the Jets, who seemed singularly disinterested in using him, Cook could end up with a Super Bowl ring this year.
He’s their 3rd stringer, I doubt he gets touches however, it could also be a McKinnon on the Chiefs thing where he just goes off for some reason in the play offs and every one goes, WTF where did that come from. I bet he fumbles away a game in the conference championship or bowl.
Cook always should have been a guy who only got played in the back half of the season. He usually got dinged-up and run down over a full compliment of games.
This is the perfect way to use him.
don’ really know. Listened to some “experts” this morning that pointed put Jets had crappy coaching, poor QB play and a shitty offensive line. Ravens run a lot of screens and with Cook having fresh legs for this time of season. he might do well.
We’ll see.
Guess Campbell playing starters. He has the 3 seed but need a win and Iggles and pie lose to get 2. Imagine he’ll try and build a lead then substitute.
Vikes are losing as they should on Sunday. This is the way.
I’ll prob watch out of morbid curiosity.
As will I. Or just red zone…will see how morbid I am feeling
I figured they’d lose out after the Raiders game, so they are right on schedule for me. I will enjoy this one, I think. It is free of all expectations. I just hope the Lions get out of it injury-free. I’d like to see them make a playoff run once again.
I got a weird feeling the Vikings sneak into the playoffs.
That is weird DE.
Didn’t know you did gummies…its hard to keep track of.
My expectations were gone the moment the pre season ended lol. Its been a ride. Hopefully for a brighter future but will have to see.
Just their f’ing luck Goff will get hurt.
Then it would be Hooker time. Everybody loves Hooker time.
We are up to Moonraker in our Bond On series at The Last Movie Outpost. We just get more and more long-winded…
https://lastmovieoutpost.com/bond-on-moonraker/
This not a Cousins question per se regarding playing ability. I just don’t know how this works.
Is Cousins a FA starting next Monday after the season is over and his contract has expired?
His contract does not expire until the end of the league year in March.
Expires March 13, i think.
Technically he is not a FA until the new league year starts, which is March 13
Norseman1 and Ben have it.
The new league year begins @4pm eastern on March 13th, 2024.
So at 4:00:01pm Eastern is when Kirk becomes an UFA.
thanks to everyone for the answer.
That gives the Vikings sole ability to negotiate and potential sign him to a new contract for 3 months. Does Kirk want to wait it out and how confident is he that a team will actually sign him with the achilles injury?
My guess is, Kirk doesn’t even take the phone call until it’s at least $35 million fully guaranteed.
I’m with you.
Too much to pay for “competitive rebuild”
Wilfs can’t quit Kirk. He is here…
Is Ziggy gay for Kirk? Did we find the missing link to the nonsense extensions?!
Black Monday is just around the corner, will any other coaches get fired? I’m pretty sure Rivera has already been told he’s canned after their last game. I think BB will move on to somewhere else. Arthur Smith is a possibility. There’s always a surprise firing, wonder who it will be.
Current openings in LA, Carolina, LV. LA is obviously the best job out there.
Maybe Saints.
Yeah if they lose I could see Allen getting canned. I don’t really see why Saleh wouldn’t get fired, they’ve completely sucked all 3 years with him.
Agree about Saleh, but Rodgers likes him, so there’s that.
I’d be curious about a Herbert/BB pairing.
I really like Herbert. Wish he played for the Vikes for like $25 million a year.
And I was married to Gal Gadot…
Yeah I would too, we’ll see what happens, maybe BB just decides to retire. IDK who Gal Gadot is
Yeah, BB is 71 years old. He’s only a year behind Pete Carroll, who is the current oldest NFL coach, I think.
Crazy to think NFL coaches are hanging on that long. Then again, the president of the USA is like 97, so there you go…
Joe can’t put together a game plan tho.
Joe can’t tie his shoes or chew solid food.
Unfortunately he couldn’t a couple of years ago either and he still won.
I’d love a pregame speech from Joe:
“When we put the puck in the gutter back home on the pond in the Fourth of July, we didn’t leave home. Chocolate-chip cookies. Come on, man! Now, let’s score some buckets! What do you mean my cousin is playing QB? He died at Waterloo?”
unfortunately that doesn’t help
Just an actress that played Wonder Woman
\
She is taller than me, I don’t know if I could be married to her.
I’m just marrying Gal to make another guy I know jealous. I don’t actually like her, but he does. And she understands this. She just wants to be with me even if my love for her is a sham. She’s got it bad.
Poor thing….let her down gently.
Its Yahoo, why are you even on there? Their entire website is click bait, spam , garbage.
You have to get through 10 stories of orangeman bad before the click bait, spam and garbage.
Can he be president from prison?
Could it be any worse than being president from the Alzheimer ward like our current one?
Oh deff not, this past term has set a new bar of worthlessness that I didnt even think was possible.
Prob watch some Hou/Ind game, maybe get a look at Minshew. Buf/Mia prob good, with Buf more to play for.
My wife everyday of her life
Same here. Her famous quote: “But, it was 50% off…”
It is amazing how women can find all these discounts. It’s got to be a gene thing.
Yep, and I have stopped even asking the question “but did we even need that?”
So the big game this weekend is Buffalo vs. Miami, but Houston vs. Indy is also compelling as a win and in game for both. Indy likely isn’t a playoff team had their rookie QB not gotten hurt and on the flip side Houston probably would have already qualified if their rookie QB didn’t miss several weeks with injury.
It sounds like our 6 year old granddaughter is going to come stay with us for a couple of months while her brother is going through his leukemia treatments. Hopefully I survive.
She will probably spend most weekends with the other grandparents, so we will get somewhat of a break occasionally. It will be fine however, it will just take some getting used to having a little person in the house.
It will make you younger VP!
I like being old.
That’s good she’ll spend time at the other grandparents, weekends are the toughest part for me when my wife is gone for military duty. Its just hard to entertain kids for like 12 hours per day.
Oh man you have to kid proof your house.
My greatest fear when the grandkids were younger was them getting hurt or maimed under my watch.
A 6 year old girl is way easier to handle than two 5 year old boys. You can have my Nephews for a weekend you would throw them out in the snow and lock the door after a day or two.
Boys are crazy for sure, especially when there are more than one. We can see that on here everyday.
Usually true. But I had one 6year old girl that could raise hell with any of similar boys. As I have gotten older, find the energy level of any of those kids so high, wonder how I ever did it.
Good luck and hope your grandson is doing better.
Lol true true. Oh on their own my nephews are fine (one more than the other) but put them together and its agony. I try to do things with them but they dont listen and fight with each other then cry and im like “im out”.

I know it’s not Tuesday, but…
CBS Sports predicts Cousins to return to the Vikes.
Projection: Re-signs with Vikings on two-year, $76M deal ($38M per year)
2024 NFL QB market: Top free agents, trade targets, cut candidates, projected landing spots, contracts, more – CBSSports.com
They also predict the Vikes to Draft JJ McCarthy.
“If there’s a QB prospect destined to rise late in the draft process, it might be McCarthy, whose pocket presence and accuracy as both a tight-window and play-action thrower could give him a relatively high floor in the NFL. CBS Sports draft expert Ryan Wilson believes he’s comparable to Ryan Tannehill when the Titans QB was coming out of Texas A&M.
Projection: Drafted in the second round by the Vikings”
I would be fine with signing Kirk for 2 at that price and drafting a QB in the 2nd round like JJ…Go defense in round 1.
Same here.
Too pricy, you are forgetting that its that price on top of his pushed cap hit from the previous contract, his cap hit WOULD BE STUPID next year. No no no, hell no.
I’d be fine with that, tread water for a year or two with Kirk and then move on.
His cap hit next year his going to be so stupid but…if it gets him out the door faster, what ever I guess.
Why not tread water with a QB that costs less?
Because that makes too much sense and would make the Wilfs look like they are “not competing” for a season. Like we’ve ever been competitive the past 5 years right?
It is amazing how many fans buy into the “competitive rebuild” propaganda.
Rubes who dont want to think for themselves because that requires effort. Its fine.
Probably the same people that believe the economy is great, there’s no issue at the border, Ukraine needs all the moneys and Israel is committing genocide by hunting terrorists.
I agree with everything you posted here – the current event stuff. But also think the “competitve rebuild” is a bit of crap, as is the you must tank and suck for a while to get really good.
Very few teams have been bad and rebuilt fast. The best lately has been Jacksonville and they went from good to really bad and stayed there for awhile. Even with Five’s boyfriend at QB they still aren’t there.
Exactly the point. Either way has risks and Jax is a perfect example.
I didn’t say its what I would prefer, just that I would fine with that.
I’ve seen enough hints from reliable insiders that the Vikings are going to grab a QB this draft. The big question is who they take as a bridge QB.
Options:
Get kirk and spend 38 million.
or
Get a Gardner minshew as a bridge for about 5 million.
You could get 2 or 3 guys like Dalvin T. and Z. Smith who are helping make the Browns defense one of the best in the league with the savings.
Just think how good defense would be if instead of wasting 4 million on Lowry we paid Dalvin T about 12 million (8 million difference), instead of Davenport we paid Z. Smith 14 million (1 million more), and then still had 25 million more to dump into free agents. Maybe bulk up the O-line?
Something to think about.
Dalvin T has performed at about the same level as Jonathon Bullard. Smith has all of 5 sacks this season, Wonnum is better than him at this point. Neither would make any significant impact on the Vikings.
Wonnum is just ok. Got a few more sacks than Smith. But there’s a huge talent gap there. Smith is on a whole different level.
Man you got some terrible takes today.
Yeah, Smith is so talented he has worse stats and is less productive, that makes total sense.
What’s your gut tell you regarding which QB they take?
BSFs gut has shit for brains, mine too
Fair. The question still holds….
He’s not on par with Bullard. That’s just nuts to type that.
There’s articles out about Dalvin T. and what a great pick up he was, and how he has completely turned around a weak interior D-line.
There were plenty of critics over the size of the deal with some saying he wasn’t a three-down difference-maker sort of player. That couldn’t have been farther from the truth as Tomlinson has played some of the best football of his career with the Browns in 2023. There have been more than a couple of games that have been taken over in stretches by Dalvin Tomlinson.
https://sports.yahoo.com/dt-dalvin-tomlinson-worth-every-142901159.html
Player A – 3 sacks, 28 tackles, 12 solo, 4 TFLs
Player B – 2 sacks, 41 tackles, 21 solo, 3 TFLs
Where is the major difference?
One of them is rated as the number 2 player in run stop win rate on ESPN and has articles written about how he has helped transform the teams weak tackles into a strength. The other is Bullard.
Not hard to figure out.
Ah yes the Anthony Barr argument, “he does a ton of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet”
Tomlinson is meh and Z Smith is washed.
Z. Smith is not even remotely washed, and Wonnum is not playing anywhere near his level.
This will be fun.
Smith Pff is 82
Wonnum is 62.
Its almost like there are some other intangibles that occur “that don’t show up on the stat sheet”
Now let me hear all about how PFF sucks.
Its what everyone says when they don’t know what they are looking at.
Wonnum is not playing nearly as well as you think.
A deeper dive into the numbers shows this.
Note article was on Dec. 4th:
Fifty-one defenders have rushed the passer on 300 snaps this season. Wonnum ranks 43rd out of those 51 in terms of pressure rate, according to Tru Media. His year-over-year pressure rate has also declined. In 2022, he pressured the quarterback on 9.9 percent of his snaps. This year, that number has dropped to 8.9 percent. His win rate is also down from 8.2 percent in 2022 to 6.7 percent.
So, why does it feel like he has leaped forward? It’s likely a byproduct of splash plays. Last year, Wonnum recorded four sacks. This season, he already has six.
The Vikings appreciate Wonnum’s commitment and work ethic, but his overall production still leaves a lot to be desired.
An interesting take:
Vikings Expected to Play Hardball With Kirk Cousins Ahead of Free Agency (msn.com)
“A Cousins extension without any additional years – just a simple, two-year, $60 million deal, like Spielberger’s contract projection — would dip into the voided hit before taking up any cap space. If offered a $30 million signing bonus and $15 million per year, Cousins would carry a cap hit of $32.8 million instead of $28.5 million, resulting in a net change of just $4.3 million.”
Finally, with the Vikings top stars on both sides of the ball secured, the team could still draft a quarterback — but that’s a likely point of discussion in Cousins’ upcoming contract talks that should reach their conclusion in early March.”
Like Bruce Allen, KAM will offer Cousins a low-ball, take it or leave it deal. Cousins will take a better deal elsewhere. KAM will insist they tried to keep Cousins, but in reality this deal was sealed last year.
How KAM proceeds post Cousins is anyone’s guess. Cousins contract is up before the draft, so when the deal expires, the Vikings will be without a QB. Or will they? The Vikings can sign any free agent QB they want, and release Cousins any time they want.
CBS Sports can kiss my ass. I bet Atlanta would offer him $40 + , he should go there.
When would the Vikings likely sign their bridge QB, be it Cousins or Minshew or Wentz?
In the offseason
Thank you BenDumDum.
Somewhere in March
Much more helpful than BenDumDum
Well, with Kirk they can extend him right now or anytime before the new league year begins, I just don’t think they will
I think Cousins would mostly likely be by March 13th @ 4pm eastern.
If he hasn’t signed by then, the full $28 million in cap hits the books and can’t be changed.
I just don’t see that deadline passing, and then signing kirk to another $30 million plus contract. Cap hit would be enormous. But kicking the can down the road is what the Vikings do.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Sending that cap hit into 2024 a disaster. I’d think they’d push hard around March 1 one way or the other. Have to think harder about draft if he moves on.
They should think hard about drafting one no matter what.
True. Talking a FA or moving up in draft.
They shouldn’t think about it, they should just do it
Why? If you build a good roster, you can get the QB you need then.
The teams that are competitive mostly have gotten their QB and then built around them. Only ones I can think of opposite would be the Niners and Rams. The Rams did not build for long term success though and mortgaged their draft futures on building the team. One could argue that the Niners didn’t really either with the Lance trade. They just got lucky that Purdy has been good.
Think Bucs did too with Brady. And in a way, Chiefs were already built when Mahomes came.
I really like the Niner model – it is sort of QB bullit proof. Picking QB is a crap shoot and they remain competitive even if they screw the pick up.
But Mahomes was drafted.
I think the point is going outside the organization for a QB or drafting a QB and building.
Building an entire team takes a lot of hits. One pick of Burrow and the Bengals turned the franchise around. The Chiefs were about like the Vikings in my mind when they drafted Mahomes. Drafting low teens, playoffish team with an aging vet. Draft good young QB, trade vet after a year and build the team with the cap space you have saved. It also gives you at least 2 years to fill some of the holes on the team via the draft and shorten the list of players you need to bring in via free agency if you hit on a few draft picks.
Your way will work great for sure if you pick a Mahomes or Buurrow. But what if you pick a Zack Wilson.
If we didn’t pick guys Cine and sign FA’s like Davenport you can build a hell of a lot better.
But the Chiefs were a playoff team, and already built to go, when Mahomes got there.
Polnt is if you built a solid roster first, you are less dependent on having to hit a home run with picking a QB
Given the success of both the Chiefs and Niners, I could go either way to do it, but really like the Niner model now.
Weren’t the Bengals kind of trending in the right direction before they got Burrows??
Maybe I am mis-remembering.
They had wild card years, been awhile.
Don’t remember the Bengals that well. but for sure the Chiefs were a playoff team.
They were going in the other direction, hence the #1 overall pick. Burrows first year he tore his ACL because their O-line made the Vikings O-lines of the last couple years look all pro. Then they drafted Chase instead of O-line help and went to the SB.
They had a few years with red rocket where they were ok but they were trending way down before burrow, so far down they had the #1 overall pick
Dalton – AJ Green years provided some entertaining games. Pack Man Jones did as well.
The Vikings don’t sign bridge QBs. They will chase some overpaid veteran and that will be it. Whether that’s Kirk or Russ is yet to be seen.
So, what are the odds on Dalvin Cook fumbling away the AFCCG this year?
I say about 50%
Some guy on Twitter is talking about how good Cook is, and showing college highlights.
Definitely possible… 50% sounds about right.
Also, Fallout auto rec.
Really looking forward to that TV series
probably, but if he does, there is a 90% chance it will be while getting hurt
I have him scoring 5 TDs during the play offs but Fumbling late in the 4th. 50% +
Its like he’s talking about people on here

Doing the Lords work!
I hear there’s plagarizing happening on this site too.
We should have our own investigation.
Wait, who is plagarizing?
Wait, who is plagarizing?
Someone said all NVF does is copy and paste over and over from outside articles.
Original thinking is pretty rare.
Source?
Links. We need links.
Or is this better?
Al Sharpton says you are racist if you are in favor of her ouster.
Good morning, SKOL!
FTP!
Ben asks hard questions lately and without sufficient coffee not really sure.
But, some thoughts quickly which may change later after caffine.
We need defensive talent – a stud up front and a cover guy.
Wouldn’t trade up given our overall lack of team talent and need valuable picks.
QBOTF – remember I just watched movie Farrari – I wouldn’t worry just right now about getting the right driver until I have a good car built. Can always get a driver at the right time later.
Also, before I pick, think it’s very important to establish a team “identity” and then pick guys consistent to that end. Saying I will to be a SB contender is hardly that – there’s many ways to do that.
Building a team from the trenches out makes perfect sense. I hope they do that.
Anybody notice that now that we don’t have Dalvin Cook, we haven’t had a single long TD run this year? Mattison has 173 carries, and has one rushing play over 20 yards (21 yards). Ty Chandler had a run that went for 31 yards.
I know that letting Cook walk was more than likely the exact right thing to do for a number of reasons, but anyone who believed Mattison could the guy was smoking crack.
Even aging home run hitters still hit home runs, just not as often. Guys that can’t hi the ball out of the infield, never hit home runs.
In 2022 his longest run went for 15 yards. So this year its an improvement.
Ty Chandler had a couple catches/runs longer than that, but they were called back due to iffy/fake penalties. He is just as explosive at this point, and less injury-prone I would imagine. You are correct, Mattison sucks.
I just want them to draft starters. Don’t care what position. Get guys that can play and make an genuine impact.
So far, KAM looks like a genius at doing that…
WHAT??????
He’s playing chess… while everyone else is playing football.
I owe you $50 on our Cousins passer rating bet. I’ve been trying to get the admins to get a contact for you, but no luck.
Let me know how you want me to get you your money.
Don’t worry about it DE… Cousins didn’t finish the season, so we’ll call it a wash.
Forgot the sarcasm font, but yes, Kwesi is making a lot of poor decisions not named Addison.
addison is for sure a good pick. But how hard is it to pick a WR2 with a first round pick. Guess should just take good however it comes.
LOL
Got Addison, Pace and maybe Blackmon
Mot trying to pick this apart but think there may be some disagreement over the term “genuine impact.”
All three are starters. And worthy of starting IMO.
Blackmon should be a solid player.
CBs have a lot to learn, and he has played decent in most games this year.
Its funny that Booth has played well in the limited snaps he has seen this year too. I would like to see Booth play a decent amount of snaps.
See how he does.
They both suck. I think it was Doogie who recently said its possible both Cine and Booth are cut in the offseason.
Blackmon does not suck.
Booth probably does. But when he has been in the games he has been decent this year.
He sucks, cut him
Booth threw a sloppy right hook in the postgame scrum on Sunday. Cut him.
Like Cine?
Yep, we need more than just a QB. We’ve got a long way to go to build a solid roster.
Regarding the discussion topic, I would like to see the FO trade every player of value, for as many picks as they can get and start all over. Do it like the OKC Thunder has done, no FA signings just start drafting the entire team. It will suck for a couple of years, but if done right, it can lead to a great team.
“If done right”
Basketball is a bit different, only 5 guys play at a time and your total roster is like 12 or whatever, so you only need to find 5 starters. In football you need 22 starters and have to field a 53 man roster and a practice squad. The Vikings have something like 27 free agents in the offseason so if you trade everyone of value and don’t sign FAs you’re going to need to draft 30+ players.
Happy Birthday, Brad! Hope you’ll be around again sometime soon.
Love NFL speculation: Read Davin to,
Browns
Dallas
Texans
Of course he signs with Ravens
214 yards, 3.2 average, Steels from Jets and a good shot at a SB
Side note, ididn’t know Penix was that banged up from college
Penix tore the same ACL twice, I’ll pass on a QB with that knee history.
Sounds like Kwesi’s type of guy.
After Daunte, Bradford, Teddy, I’m tired of knees.
I would suggest that a QB without knees will have some serious mobility issues.
He’s great, we just need an OL that holds up well, say a top 3 OL. Hasn’t been a problem in the past.
Haha yeah, you’re right! Our line is always clutch!
But for real, even if we have two good tackles and a good guard, we have a below average center and a turnstile guard in Ingram, so even if everybody else does their jobs well, it all breaks down due to the incompetence of at least one person. That’s why it’s so hard to have a consistently good line.
