Good morning all and SKOL. The Steelers and the Ravens play at 4:30 today (EST) and then the Colts and the Texans play in the evening game. I’m sticking with purple now, and hope the Ravens win the Super Bowl. My wife is a Ravens fan so each Sunday we have cheered for the purple teams. Unfortunately “my” purple team is pretty much done for this year, barring a miracle. So, go John Harbaugh, go Lamar, go Dalvin!!!

The Ravens signing Dalvin Cook could just be what the doctor ordered. Cook had his damaged shoulder surgically repaired this off-season, has been on a team all year (so he’s in football shape), and hasn’t hardly been used at all (fresh legs). Now he’s going to a team with the best O-line in the league, who love to run the ball. After all he’s been through, being released, and signing with the Jets, who seemed singularly disinterested in using him, Cook could end up with a Super Bowl ring this year.

He’s their 3rd stringer, I doubt he gets touches however, it could also be a McKinnon on the Chiefs thing where he just goes off for some reason in the play offs and every one goes, WTF where did that come from. I bet he fumbles away a game in the conference championship or bowl.

Cook always should have been a guy who only got played in the back half of the season. He usually got dinged-up and run down over a full compliment of games.

This is the perfect way to use him.

don’ really know. Listened to some “experts” this morning that pointed put Jets had crappy coaching, poor QB play and a shitty offensive line. Ravens run a lot of screens and with Cook having fresh legs for this time of season. he might do well.

They also predict the Vikes to Draft JJ McCarthy.

“If there’s a QB prospect destined to rise late in the draft process, it might be McCarthy, whose pocket presence and accuracy as both a tight-window and play-action thrower could give him a relatively high floor in the NFL. CBS Sports draft expert Ryan Wilson believes he’s comparable to Ryan Tannehill when the Titans QB was coming out of Texas A&M.
Projection: Drafted in the second round by the Vikings”

I’ve seen enough hints from reliable insiders that the Vikings are going to grab a QB this draft. The big question is who they take as a bridge QB.

Options:

Get kirk and spend 38 million.
or
Get a Gardner minshew as a bridge for about 5 million.
You could get 2 or 3 guys like Dalvin T. and Z. Smith who are helping make the Browns defense one of the best in the league with the savings.

Just think how good defense would be if instead of wasting 4 million on Lowry we paid Dalvin T about 12 million (8 million difference), instead of Davenport we paid Z. Smith 14 million (1 million more), and then still had 25 million more to dump into free agents. Maybe bulk up the O-line?

Something to think about.

He’s not on par with Bullard. That’s just nuts to type that.
There’s articles out about Dalvin T. and what a great pick up he was, and how he has completely turned around a weak interior D-line.

There were plenty of critics over the size of the deal with some saying he wasn’t a three-down difference-maker sort of player. That couldn’t have been farther from the truth as Tomlinson has played some of the best football of his career with the Browns in 2023. There have been more than a couple of games that have been taken over in stretches by Dalvin Tomlinson.

One of them is rated as the number 2 player in run stop win rate on ESPN and has articles written about how he has helped transform the teams weak tackles into a strength. The other is Bullard.
Not hard to figure out.

Big Stupid Face
Reply to  benjammin
5 January 2024 11:16 am

Z. Smith is not even remotely washed, and Wonnum is not playing anywhere near his level.

This will be fun.

Smith Pff is 82
Wonnum is 62.

Its almost like there are some other intangibles that occur “that don’t show up on the stat sheet”

Now let me hear all about how PFF sucks.
Its what everyone says when they don’t know what they are looking at.

Wonnum is not playing nearly as well as you think.

A deeper dive into the numbers shows this.

Note article was on Dec. 4th:

Fifty-one defenders have rushed the passer on 300 snaps this season. Wonnum ranks 43rd out of those 51 in terms of pressure rate, according to Tru Media. His year-over-year pressure rate has also declined. In 2022, he pressured the quarterback on 9.9 percent of his snaps. This year, that number has dropped to 8.9 percent. His win rate is also down from 8.2 percent in 2022 to 6.7 percent.
So, why does it feel like he has leaped forward? It’s likely a byproduct of splash plays. Last year, Wonnum recorded four sacks. This season, he already has six.

The Vikings appreciate Wonnum’s commitment and work ethic, but his overall production still leaves a lot to be desired.

An interesting take:

Vikings Expected to Play Hardball With Kirk Cousins Ahead of Free Agency (msn.com)

“A Cousins extension without any additional years – just a simple, two-year, $60 million deal, like Spielberger’s contract projection — would dip into the voided hit before taking up any cap space. If offered a $30 million signing bonus and $15 million per year, Cousins would carry a cap hit of $32.8 million instead of $28.5 million, resulting in a net change of just $4.3 million.”

Finally, with the Vikings top stars on both sides of the ball secured, the team could still draft a quarterback — but that’s a likely point of discussion in Cousins’ upcoming contract talks that should reach their conclusion in early March.”

Like Bruce Allen, KAM will offer Cousins a low-ball, take it or leave it deal. Cousins will take a better deal elsewhere. KAM will insist they tried to keep Cousins, but in reality this deal was sealed last year.

How KAM proceeds post Cousins is anyone’s guess. Cousins contract is up before the draft, so when the deal expires, the Vikings will be without a QB. Or will they? The Vikings can sign any free agent QB they want, and release Cousins any time they want.

I think Cousins would mostly likely be by March 13th @ 4pm eastern.
If he hasn’t signed by then, the full $28 million in cap hits the books and can’t be changed.

I just don’t see that deadline passing, and then signing kirk to another $30 million plus contract. Cap hit would be enormous. But kicking the can down the road is what the Vikings do.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

The teams that are competitive mostly have gotten their QB and then built around them. Only ones I can think of opposite would be the Niners and Rams. The Rams did not build for long term success though and mortgaged their draft futures on building the team. One could argue that the Niners didn’t really either with the Lance trade. They just got lucky that Purdy has been good.

Think Bucs did too with Brady. And in a way, Chiefs were already built when Mahomes came.
I really like the Niner model – it is sort of QB bullit proof. Picking QB is a crap shoot and they remain competitive even if they screw the pick up.

But Mahomes was drafted.
I think the point is going outside the organization for a QB or drafting a QB and building.

Building an entire team takes a lot of hits. One pick of Burrow and the Bengals turned the franchise around. The Chiefs were about like the Vikings in my mind when they drafted Mahomes. Drafting low teens, playoffish team with an aging vet. Draft good young QB, trade vet after a year and build the team with the cap space you have saved. It also gives you at least 2 years to fill some of the holes on the team via the draft and shorten the list of players you need to bring in via free agency if you hit on a few draft picks.

Your way will work great for sure if you pick a Mahomes or Buurrow. But what if you pick a Zack Wilson.
If we didn’t pick guys Cine and sign FA’s like Davenport you can build a hell of a lot better.

But the Chiefs were a playoff team, and already built to go, when Mahomes got there.
Polnt is if you built a solid roster first, you are less dependent on having to hit a home run with picking a QB
Given the success of both the Chiefs and Niners, I could go either way to do it, but really like the Niner model now.

Weren’t the Bengals kind of trending in the right direction before they got Burrows??

Maybe I am mis-remembering.

They were going in the other direction, hence the #1 overall pick. Burrows first year he tore his ACL because their O-line made the Vikings O-lines of the last couple years look all pro. Then they drafted Chase instead of O-line help and went to the SB.

The Vikings don’t sign bridge QBs. They will chase some overpaid veteran and that will be it. Whether that’s Kirk or Russ is yet to be seen.

Ben asks hard questions lately and without sufficient coffee not really sure.
But, some thoughts quickly which may change later after caffine.
We need defensive talent – a stud up front and a cover guy.
Wouldn’t trade up given our overall lack of team talent and need valuable picks.
QBOTF – remember I just watched movie Farrari – I wouldn’t worry just right now about getting the right driver until I have a good car built. Can always get a driver at the right time later.
Also, before I pick, think it’s very important to establish a team “identity” and then pick guys consistent to that end. Saying I will to be a SB contender is hardly that – there’s many ways to do that.

Anybody notice that now that we don’t have Dalvin Cook, we haven’t had a single long TD run this year? Mattison has 173 carries, and has one rushing play over 20 yards (21 yards). Ty Chandler had a run that went for 31 yards.

I know that letting Cook walk was more than likely the exact right thing to do for a number of reasons, but anyone who believed Mattison could the guy was smoking crack.

Even aging home run hitters still hit home runs, just not as often. Guys that can’t hi the ball out of the infield, never hit home runs.

In 2022 his longest run went for 15 yards. So this year its an improvement.

Ty Chandler had a couple catches/runs longer than that, but they were called back due to iffy/fake penalties. He is just as explosive at this point, and less injury-prone I would imagine. You are correct, Mattison sucks.

Blackmon should be a solid player.
CBs have a lot to learn, and he has played decent in most games this year.

Its funny that Booth has played well in the limited snaps he has seen this year too. I would like to see Booth play a decent amount of snaps.
See how he does.

Regarding the discussion topic, I would like to see the FO trade every player of value, for as many picks as they can get and start all over. Do it like the OKC Thunder has done, no FA signings just start drafting the entire team. It will suck for a couple of years, but if done right, it can lead to a great team.

Dallas
Texans
Of course he signs with Ravens
214 yards, 3.2 average, Steels from Jets and a good shot at a SB
Side note, ididn’t know Penix was that banged up from college

Haha yeah, you’re right! Our line is always clutch!

But for real, even if we have two good tackles and a good guard, we have a below average center and a turnstile guard in Ingram, so even if everybody else does their jobs well, it all breaks down due to the incompetence of at least one person. That’s why it’s so hard to have a consistently good line.
