Prepare to be triggered snowflakes, links below!

ESPN mock here has the Vikings taking Dallas Turner at #11 and then Penix in the second round. I do not believe this will happen, I don’t think they’re going to take a QB just to take a QB.

From Big Blue View, the Vikings CB coach Daronte Jones interviewed for the Giants DC job

The Vikings age asks, should the Vikings bring back old friend Eric Bieniemy for as some sort of offensive assistant? I don’t see any way that happens, doesn’t seem like he’d fit in the kumbaya klub.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

One thing folks don’t talk a lot about with rookie QB’s is the difference between the college ball and the NFL ball. The NFL ball is larger, and some college QB’s struggle to throw it well initially. Lamar Jackson said it took him some time to adjust to the larger ball and threw a lot of “ducks” at first.

Had something happen to me last week, still kind of thinking about it – mostly politics, complete chicken shit and a little football.
My wife talked me into going to wine dinner (her favorite). Don’t know anyone and we get set at a table with two other couples. Right next to me is a couple (both trial lawyers) from Illinois. I knew as lawyers I needed to be on good political behavior – esp. drinking. Just trying to make conversation, I mention how much I like Chicago, and feel for everyone with all the crime. THE response – you must watch a lot of Fox news. Well, things went to crap real fast after that. But, when it got to the point when she said- well. you just don’t want a better America, just go backwards thankfully, my wife grabbed my leg and I excused myself and went to the bathroom. When got back, wife was in my place, which saved me.
On the way home. told my wife (usually don’t cuss too much around her) – I’m so fuckin sick of this limp dick, chicken shit crap of people pulling this high ground crap to put others down who disagree. Oh, their for American, and if you disagree you’re crap.
See some of this in football arguments too – Oh, you don’t want to win a SB, etc. That’s chicken shit too.
Anyway still running hot about this. Screw people who pull this crap..
Watch who you have dinner with.

Or stupid – had a conversation regarding how things have changed regarding tolerance on television and how a show like M*A*S*H couldn’t be made today with characters like ‘Spearchucker Jones’ – was immediately told that I had been brainwashed into believing that institutionalized racism within power structures is a normal thing and by watching shows like M*A*S*H and ‘All In The Family’ I was further perpetuating the problem. I excused myself and smoked a joint the size of my foot while listening to HW Jr’s ‘Dixie On My Mind’ in the basement to calm myself. Spent a lot of time in the basement while she was here.

I agree JRob…. Some of my closest friends and I disagree ideologically but manage to keep civil and discuss topics while finding the humor in it and understanding that a person’s politics and idea/belief structure is but a small makeup of that person. It also feels like it’s the far-edge & fringe elements of both major parties – the crazy left progressives that want everything for everyone right fucking now & the super far-right white supremacist wackadoos that openly lobby for civil war – are holding both parties (and the majority of actual voters that show up at the polls) hostage by keeping their respective nuttiness in the news and allowing Johnny Democrat or Jane Republican to keep believing that the other side has lost it’s goddamn mind. There is so much more common ground for people to find solidarity in. The mass majority want safe neighborhoods and schools, affordable goods and services, less violence, freedom of speech, the right to defend ourselves, free and fair elections, freedom to worship who/what we choose, clean air, safe water and sufficient healthcare that protects our young and sustains our elderly. We just disagree on how to get there (not us personally, society as a larger construct) the idea that disagreement somehow equates to either ignorance or lack of patriotism is fucking absurd.

So why do people associate white supremacists with the right? Because the left puts them there? I don’t know any conservatives who identify with white supremacists. To me they are political outliers. But the left wants everyone to believe the right are a bunch of racist haters, so naturally they claim white supremacist belong on the right.

I think it’s easy to associate the boogeyman with the thing you don’t like – associating WS with conservatives is an easy, cheap (and wholly inaccurate – I agree they’re mostly an outlier) way to discredit an entire belief/idea structure in one fell swoop, thereby undermining the credibility of that particular movement.

It’s the same as saying that the Democrats are all Marxists looking to turn your children gay and normalize pedophilia. Some may very well be – but it’s a low percentage.

I think the majority of WS that vote do probably vote republican – liberals are also a target of these groups as most anything decreed as liberal in these circles is equated to also being Jewish – so I think very few, if any WS are voting blue.

Regardless, I think the major majority of republicans and democrats fall somewhere in the ‘common-sense’ middle – hoping for things, willing to concede others and understanding that compromise doesn’t equate surrender as long as the conversation remains open and their voices have a chance to be heard.

Unfortunately it’s the screaming from the fringe that makes the best sound bite, and not the normal, common-sense voice speaking clearly and calmly.

The one lady (I use that term loosely) was all self-righteous about how bad diet soda is. They supposedly had some and everyone in the household got headaches, blah, blah, blah….. Diet soda probably isn’t the best thing in the world, but her self-righteous know-it-all attitude made me promptly order a diet soda.

Well in 5 weeks at the latest (actually 36 days from now) he has to tell everyone his decision on Cousins. Once he lets everyone know he’s moving on, the rest of the story will then be written.

I think KAM will make a play for Russell Wilson, and draft someone.

Quit using logic.

Draft a rookie and let them sit being either :

  1. KC that you signed for 2yrs since you paying 14M for him anyway.
  2. Mullins that is already on the roster and making small money while you take the $28M hit from KCs contract.

Sit still and draft McCarthy unless he’s going to fall to the end of the 1st and then trade back in for him. The problem is you might outsmart yourself with that move, especially with the Donkeys behind them so if there is a guy that former QB KOC thinks is the guy, get him. Don’t worry about the price. If it works, then nobody will remember the price. If it doesn’t you’ll be fired either way.

Bow… you know the answer to that… KM says he wants “flexibility” in the contract, i.e. the team has to be able to dump the contract any time they want. Cousins won’t sign a contract that is worthless. The deal is done, KAM is hoping Cousins will change his mind. That ain’t happening, and in the next 36 days, KAM will have to make it public.

bowbunch

As already discussed, flexibility can mean more than simply being able to cut a player. There are so many ways to build a contract in the NFL that can give the player financial security while also giving the team what a GM might consider flexibility.

No longer New Vikings Fan

“Flexibility” in this case means limited guaranteed money, and no “no trade clause”. We all know this is the sticking point. KAM is getting nothing and Cousins is walking.

Lincoln, where I live, is a sanctuary city for both Vietnamese in the 70’s/80’s and a large Middle Eastern population mainly from Iraq/Syria in the late 90’s and another large influx after the Iraq invasion in 2003. Obvious cultural differences but for the most part we’ve avoided a lot of the crime and other issues. Lincoln is just under 300k people though – a far cry in population from say Chicago or New York.

I’m concerned with this. Many teenagers have been tried as adults for violent crimes. What parent can completely control the actions of any teenager? I had a girlfriend who would carry sexy clothes in her gym bag, and change into them for me once she got to school. Kids can get around parental control. This is a tragedy, and terrible. But unless the parents were actively encouraging their child to kill others, I can’t buy this conviction.

Because it is the ‘easy wrong answer’.

The Teacher sees it all the time. School Administrators are more worried about the consequences of any action they take then actually keep the kids/staff/workplace safe.
They figure they will get in trouble less often by doing nothing if they have any excuse than by doing their job and having someone/anyone complain.

ie
Had a Sgt ask me to come work for him. I knew that his crew cut too many corners for me to be comfortable so I declined.

Less than a month later there was a fight/small riot with about a dozen inmates assaulting staff. A dozen responding staff plus the Sgt were all fired.

The nurse (who was married to an inmate) complained that they were too mean so the Woke Admin threw them all under the bus.

They took some shortcuts and once the spotlight was on them it was easier/cheaper/safer for the Suits to throw them under the bus.

You mean the Mom who caused many of his mental issues?
The Mom who bought him the gun and didn’t secure it?
The Mom who didn’t take him home the day of the shooting like the school asked because she was going to see the man she was screwing on the side?

The mom caused many of his mental issues?

Thought his father bought the gun. I could be wrong.

The school didn’t insist she should take him home… obviously. They apparently saw no threat.

The school saw him daily, and witnessed his interactions with others. His mother was not there to witness his activities in the school environment. No one in the school stood up and said the child has issues and needs to be evaluated? Hmmmm.

I focused on the Mom as she was the focus of the story.
Dad’s trial is up next.
Just insert ‘parents’ for mom if it makes you feel better.

And he asked for that specific gun because he figured that was the type he needed for shooting kids at school.
Administrators did want them to take charge of the kid and they refused too.

Many at the school stated that the kid had issues and they referred him to the Administrators, that is why the parents were called in.

Start a blame pie and Admin and the parents both get a sizable piece. The Kid then The Parents then School Admin IMHO.

Likely so. NFL markets streaming their own channel and RedZone right now. NBC/CBS use Peacock & Paramount. MNF I believe can be streamed on the ESPN+ apps. Last night I watched all the Pro Bowl YouTube videos. I must say, they are more interesting than watching what had become of the actual Pro Bowl game.

It was nice to see how diverse the challenges are, and how they are making it more inclusive for all players on the team, especially creating things that the ST can contribute to. They actually put competition back into it.

However, the biggest disappointment was the Closest To The Pin challenge. What on Earth were they thinking, pitting players who actually know how to play golf against others that clearly had a club handed to them for the first time in their lives just minutes prior to starting the challenge?

I mean, seriously. They let the one dude hit a driver on a par 3 that most players were hitting an 8-iron. And I swear the one dude had trouble figuring out what end of the club to hold.

Cousins has been on two very dysfunctional teams. He made both of them competitive. Both teams pretty much failed on every level except the passing game. Cousins has always been great at throwing the ball. He doesn’t block, tackle, or kick the ball very well though.

Stop with this false narrative.

The team that preceded Cousins ran the ball effectively and had a historic defense. They brought in a new OC though, and their run coordinator died just before the season started. The offense was foreign to everyone, and the OC got fired, yet Cousins was spectacular. He completed over 70% of his passes with 30TD’s. How is that not better?

Since Cousins arrived here, he’s compiled more TD’s and more yards in a five year stretch than any QB in Vikings history. How is that not better?

False narrative? You’re the one that said Kirk made them competitive. Whether Kirk had anything to do with it or not, the Vikings actually competed for a SB pre-Kirk. Kirk did not make the Vikings competitive, nor did he make the Redskins competitive since they also went further in the playoffs pre-Kirk. Kirk puts up good stats, but not a single team he has been on has actually been competitive. Time to move the goalposts to the parking lot.

Of course he made them more competitive. He scored more points, and threw for more yards than any QB in Vikings history in a five year span, and he threw the fourth most TD’s in the league during that time. How does that not make the Vikings better, and make them more competitive?

1 year pre-Kirk : NFC Championship Game

All the years since Kirk got to MN: 1 playoff win.

The Redskins won the NFC East the first year Cousins was the starter, with no defense, no running game, and a rookie OC.

The two years before Cousins became the starter the Redskins went 7-25. With Cousins they went 24-23-1. Since Cousins left, the Redskins are 43-71-1.

Cousins kept the Redskins in almost every game. He led scoring drives in the 4th quarter multiple times inside two minutes, that the defense pissed away. I guess if I detailed every single game though you would still claim that Cousins did not make the Redskins competitive.

It’s also correct to say that Goff was there 5 years, got to 1 Super Bowl in year 3 (and lost) had his option picked up, played 2 more seasons.

No Super Bowl wins after 5 years and he was gone.

Then the Rams won the Super Bowl the next year.

Mahomes signed a contract with a big roster bonus in every year so the team can gain something like 30 million per year with a simple restructure. While long term and reported as big bucks, Mahomes left a lot of flexibility for the team. Plus he is 10 times better than Kirk and can cover up warts that Kirk can’t.

That’s true… if you have a rookie QB on a rookie contract like say Bryce Young, you can invest in all those other guys and win like the Panthers did, or Darnold and the Jets, or Jones and the Giants. Rookies normally take a couple years to get good, then if they become good, you have to pay them a big contract. In the meantime, they usually aren’t good and so the team is lacking.

Kind of works two ways Ben.

Or like Stroud and the Texans, or Burrow and the Bengals, or Allen and the Bills, or Russ and the Seahawks, or Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Stroud hasn’t won anything, nor has Burrows, nor has Allen, according to the standards of some folks here (I disagree). But other than Stroud, name the bad team these players were on. I’ll wait.

There is no guaratee he will ever win another one… is there? Also, I totally agree, once in a while you will luck out and get a guy in the draft who plays well out of the gate. The odds are hugely against that though, statistics show.

The Bengals were so bad they drafted #1 overall to get Burrow and went to a SB his first full year as the starter. The Bills have been true contenders for a championship and not just a division title.

With that Defense and the OL would have to be healthy. That’s the kicker right? Mahomes can get out of trouble. With the Chiefs lineup healthy, yes.

I would say no. Cousins has been in the NFL since 2012, and has devoted himself to studying opponent defenses, and developing his ability to beat them with his brain and his arm.

Purdy is still just 24 and developing as a passer. He has certainly fared well throughout his first two seasons, but he has had some bumps in the road, especially against top defenses.  Shanahan uses a ton of timing routes in his offense. The receivers win quick, and are open for pretty easy throws a lot of the time.

They are going to be losing a lot of guys even with Purdy’s contract next year. They better get it done this year, but I fear the NFL will not miss out on the opportunity to have Swift on the stage after the game. Plus, if the Chiefs lose they risk losing all of those Swift fans.

Ummm Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers agreed to a restructured one-year contract that made Garoppolo the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL in 2022. He counted over $26M against the cap that year. Trey Lance signed a four-year $34,105,275 contract that was fully guaranteed as well. Yet the Niners STILL brought in all that talent.

What do 2 players not on the 49ers and with 0 cap hit this year have to do with anything? At least Kirk was nice enough to make sure he’s an almost 30 mill cap hit in 2024 without even taking a snap on the Vikings. And before you scream GM! GM! GM!, it takes 2 to tango and Kirk could have done a differently structured deal but he knew KAM had no choice but to do something so he held a fully guaranteed, no tradeable gun to his head.

We were talking about how the Niners have great players because they have a QB on a rookie deal. They acquired those players while paying a lot for two other QB’s though.

Started his career at OU and played pretty well – was a Heisman favorite at one point. Then he was benched for Caleb Williams. Then transferred to South Carolina. Can make impressive throws and immediately follow it up with a boneheaded decision. I don’t hate the kid.

Really think this is KAM’s reset year at QB, and actually fiscally across the board. The Vikings have 27 free agents on the roster. Cousins will have to walk, because KAM can neither afford him, nor will Cousins sign a deal where KAM can trade him or cut him, at will.

I guess I consider anybody under 50 dying “young” but beyond that, you’ve lived half a century and you’re approaching average lifespan of around 74 in the US. There’s a lot bigger tragedies than dying at 62 with a life full of experiences.
