Behind the ESPN paywall, bet FA fit for the Vikings:

38. Sean Murphy-Bunting, CB

Best team fit: Minnesota Vikings

I originally had Murphy-Bunting to Arizona here, but I believe the Vikings will be seeking some corners for Brian Flores’ aggressive system, and he’d work well in Minnesota. With his long frame and fluid hips, Murphy-Bunting can challenge on the outside or match in blitz coverage. He has eight interceptions and 22 pass breakups over five pro seasons, with two picks in 2023 in Tennessee.

That same article has the Falcons as the best fit for everyone’s favorite QB

QUESTION OF THE DAY

What are your thoughts on the KAM/KOC regime so far? Personally I’m much more optimistic about KOC than I am KAM.

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Of course what CNN fails to mention (surprise!) is that the killer is a “non US Citizen” from Venezuela. The whole thing sickens me.

Saw an article that went down a path of using JJ in a draft trade-up scenario, to garner the #3 pick in the draft (from the Patriots). It’s a wild theorem, but that’s what the offseason is about. The author used the the baseline of the Jacksonville Jaguars trade of Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams to develop this scenario. That trade was as follows.

  • 2020 first-round pick
  • 2021 first-round pick
  • 2021 fourth-round pick

At this point in their careers, Jefferson is objectively better at his position than Ramsey is at his, so the value should be a tad more. That ended up being 3rd overall, 68th overall and a first round pick in 2025. If this trade were to happen (no way in hell), this is what that trade might look like, per the author.

3. LSU QB Jayden Daniels
11. Alabama CB Terrion Arnold
42. Washington WR Ja’Lynn Polk
68. Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley
109. Louisville CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
130. Clemson DT Tyler Davis
145. Louisville RB Isaac Guerendo
157. Missouri OT Javon Foster
166. Miami FL ILB/S James Williams
176. Florida Atlantic NT Evan Anderson
227. South Dakota State RB Isaiah Davis

Good morning NLV – good day for golf.
Hope they don’ trade JJ, but I don’t know anything.
Seems to be quite a few teams in flux – e’g., Eagles and Hurts/sirriana problems, Cowboys and poor DAK with no running game and Parsons popping off.
It’ll all work out.
Hope KAM has a plan – more than just balance the budget.

Good morning JR. Tomorrow is our 23rd wedding anniversary, so after the wife gets back from the gym, we’re headed into Tampa for an anniversary lunch, shopping, and getting her foreign currency for her trip to Sweden next week. No golf for me… grin.

Yes, the NFL offseason is about to get into full swing in 3 weeks, but this coming week the NFL combine will be going on. This where lots of team rumors start to crop up. Pundits will detail which managers they saw talking to which teams about their players, etc. So next week it will be wild and wooly as they say.

Congratulations on 23 – hard part over.
My wife wants to go to some famous steak house there – Burn’s I think, but there’s a several month’s waiting list. We’ll see.
I’m just not into the combine and all the buzz around it – sort of reminds me of batting practice in baseball.

Bern’s Steak House in Tampa is world famous, and yes, hard to get reservations. Malio’s is another great restaurant though, and it’s a little easier to get reservations.

I expect a lot of Cousins talk at the combine next week. Also there was some talk of the Bears sending Fields to us, which is goofy to say the least. Theories running wild.

I do expect the next Vikings QB to be a “mobile” guy though. So we got that goin for us.

Why do we need to double on on WR at 42 and 68??
Even with a JJ trade 1 will do and Defense needs more help.

Why are we doubling down on RB at 145 and 227?
I often get 1 in my Mocks but I hear good ones can be found in FA.
Would have gone with a big TE with some skills like Spann-Ford.

I see a few needs on O, RB/TE/OC.
If we can address these in FA then the need to draft them is reduced.

Of course a JJ trade could change that, plus a stud that falls has to be considered even if we don’t ‘need them’ right away, ala AD back in the day.

A post 1 June cut of Harrison Smith will save the Vikings $15.3M in cap space. That’s going to happen. Cutting Daniel Hunter post 1 June, will save a little more than $7.4M in cap space. That’s $22.75M in cap space in two moves. Add in Dean Lowry’s $3,882,353 cap hit savings as a post 1 June cut, and that totals a little over $26.6M in cap space. That would put KAM in a position to add a couple FA pieces. BTW, right now with the 9 draft picks we have, we need a little over $11M to sign whoever we pick.

Oh the Vikings “could” sign Cousins, they just won’t. They aren’t accepting the terms or “structure” of the contract Cousins is looking for. He wants to retire a Viking, but that means he needs guaranteed years, and a no trade clause. Neither of those are going to happen with KAM writing the contracts, so Cousins will be moving on, sadly, this coming season.

Morning Surly. Yes, this looks like the turning point for KAM. He’s had a couple seasons of moving on from some big name, big contract players (Kendricks, Thielen, Cook, etc) but now he’s going to finish that off, with Cousins, and probably Hunter. He may even divest himself of JJ.

Who will he bring in this year as the foundation of his Championship team? I mean Addison is the #1 guy in that regard, along with Hockenson, I guess. We’ll see who the workhorse RB will be, along with the QB, D-linemen, Linebackers, DB’s, and O-line.

Gonna be an interesting off-season.

think it’s some of the first two, and by inference if you have the first two problems you need to change scheme.
Now I realize all the Kirk/JJ extension stuff is the ‘sexy’ talk, but our lack of a running attack is a big hindrance to the success of this team.
You see our line blowing people off the ball on a 3rd and 1? See our RB’s moving the pile a couple of yards.

I was just joking because I know how bad DE wants to see Kirk extended. As of today Kirk has a $28 mill dead cap hit but that gets spread out if they re-sign him and the amount that would be save just happened to closely coincide with the change in overall cap.

Kirk extension pushes another 14 mill to 2025. Is Hunter’s dead money all hitting this year as well no matter what or is there multiple void years like Kirk that could spread that dead hit out if they get an extension worked out with him?

bowbunch
bowbunch

23 February 2024 1:09 pm

Looks like 2 void years so if they give Hunter a $20 mill per year deal his cap hit in 2024 would be $27.5 mill (ish) instead of a $15 mill dead hit for nothing in 2024. Similar as Kirk, I think try to work out a 2-3 year deal with him. You’re going to have to replace him one way or another and what sort of talent would you get for $13 mill?

bowbunch
bowbunch
Reply to  benjammin
23 February 2024 1:30 pm

As long as the deals are reasonable and no extra void years are added I think there is a definite benefit to extending them. Hunter is probably more likely, but that depends on what he thinks his market value is. Does he agree with Spotrac at $20 mill/year or does he think he deserves closer to $30 mill even though he’s almost 30?

As long as they can get rid of him next year when JJ is ready to take the reins that would be cool. Even if he has a no trade clause they could trade him after 2024 and have a good insurance policy this year should the rookie they better draft not be ready to go. If they draft Nix they will need Kirk in 2025 and beyond.

Goooooose Morning!

QotD:

I like KOC and think he’s done a decent job so far. I want him to hand play calling duties off to someone else.

I think KAM was outgunned and over his head in draft 1. Last years was a bit better – Addison looks to be legit and adding Hock was a definite upgrade.

As been mentioned below one good offseason can change things a ton. Must figure out the QB situation and hopefully land a few impact FA’s (primarily on the defensive side of the ball, although I think they should bring in another WR and potentially a RB)

KAM has to nail draft 3. If he doesn’t, it wouldn’t surprise me if a year from now we’re talking about an entirely different coach and GM and what they will do in ‘25.

Happy Friday!

QOTD: KOC is safe and will probably get an extension at the end of this year or beginning of next year imo. KAM on the other hand, this is the start of year 3 of his 4 year contract, and its make or break for him imo. This draft will decide if he stays a Viking going forward. I think they expect him to pick our new QB, and he will do what it takes to get it. And its going to have to pan out, or he’s gone, and they will get someone else to find the future. This draft will also suede how I feel about him, right now I could take or leave it.

Diamonds are forged under pressure. MN nice and nostalgia are why MN Sports teams are barren of relevance and championships in 30+ years. Its time someone makes a move under the gun, gambles, and stops being nice. Im ready for it, in all major mens sports.

Fans get what they want.
In MN, it appears making the playoffs once in awhile with good stats and a nice guy leader is enough.

And I absolutely despise that “Every resident in Fargo” nice mentality when it comes to sports Fandom. I acknowledge it, some people just want entertainment and dont care about the out come that much. I care about both. And Im more entertained when they win (not how they win – stats) Just winning in general, and winning against other known winners.

I’m MN nice about high school sports and stuff at that sort of level, but I don’t like to cut the Vikings much slack.

They are professionals. They have a stadium. They have a state-of-the-art training facility.

Also that, but my point ties into why they dont win enough games. Players they extend, players they dotn want in the locker room even if they are good, etc. “This guy is a dick in the locker room” Who cares? He’s good. Ryan was booming kicks his first year and not so much last year.
I was wondering if he was told to ‘tone it down’ a bit as he was out kicking the coverage.
Not sure what else would cause that logically.

He should call out the media about their false reporting and try suing for libel.

Mike Florio at the time:

It’s a tough call because he’s entitled to due process. He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence. But, good Lord, these allegations are horrifying. If I was the Bills, if I was the NFL, I would want to get to the point very quickly where I have a feeling, a reliable gut feeling, whether or not this guy may be responsible for what he’s accused of. Because if he is, see you later Matt Araiza. You can’t work here.”

In general feel better about KOC than KAM. KOC really took Rick’s team and turned it into 13 wins. Last year the injuries made it tough, but didn’t think KOC handled the QB’s all that well after Kirk went down.
I’m poorly informed on the GM stuff, but I wouldn’t draft a safety with my first overall draft pick. Also kind of skeptical of ‘bean counter types’ calling the shots – but we’ll see.
Some say give him two or three more years, well, if he screws up this draft, don’t think so.

I don’t think Kwesi or KOC are the answer, but they still are allowed this season to prove differently, so I’m in shrug-mode at the moment.

The tricky part is it is hard to have a prove-it season when there are two clearly superior teams in the division. We are in no-man’s land.

We played all four – so went back and watched some of highlights from our games against. Didn’t see “clearly superior teams”

It is an easy thing for the Vikings to prove. They play the Packers and Lions twice every season. If they are superior, they should end up more than 2-2 next season.

I think we can’t have it both ways. I say I give KAM 2 more years to really see what kind of roster he can put together but at the same time if I won’t damn him for the roster that currently is then at the same time I can’t really give him credit for it either… so yeah I agree. I don’t hate KAM but I’ve liked KOC. He’s young and I believe will get better with the years.

Bold prediction, Kirk will not be the QB of the Vikings the next time they win a playoff game. I still think he will be back this year and they may even make the playoffs but Kirk will Kirk and they will lose in the wildcard round until JJ is ready to lead the team to glory.

Question of the day. I will be patient with Kwesi for another 3 years, unless he extends Kirko. If he does that, bring out the pitchforks.

KoC is doing well for what he has. He is not holding this team back imo, even though there are areas to improve (play calling)

As long as there’s improvement in the draft this year (ie they get JJ no matter what it takes) I will give KAM a pass on the first draft since the scouts were all Rick/Zim holdovers scouting and grading all year based on what Zim would want. Last year was better but still left a lot to be desired. We’ll see what happens in a few weeks and go from there. I will give KAM a grade of incomplete for now.
