Twinkies survive a 1st inning grand slam and win it in the 10th 6-5.

I almost said good things about Simion Woods Richardson at the beginning of the game, He didn’t need my jinx as he walked 3 and gave up the granny.
But Twinkies win so it is all good.

The “can’t miss” 2021 QB draft class:

No. 1 Trevor Lawrence: $275 million extension but not overwhelmingly impressive yet
No. 2 Zach Wilson: Jets – traded to Broncos
No. 3 Trey Lance: 49ers – traded to Cowboys
No. 11 Justin Fields: Bears – traded to Steelers
No. 15 Mac Jones: Patriots – traded to Jaguars

Evidently the Rams tried to trade up from #19 to #10 in the draft, they offered #19 and #52 to the Jets who then called the Vikings who beat the Rams deal and moved up and grabbed JJ.

So much for the report from the ‘mouth breathers’ that the Vikings got scammed into trading up and overpaying for our QBOTF.

Ummm… were the Rams going to take McCarthy??? If not, there was no reason to trade up.

Some think for Bowers some think for Turner some think for McCarthy.
Some think for Latu and some think for Verse, who they eventually drafted for at #19.
Buttholemouth was saying he was the reason Vikings moved up, that he ‘played them’. There was more going on we played it safe and got the guy we wanted.

tiger is a great putter. But as you know, it’s really hard to try to play golf at this level only playing in events once a month or so. And then those events are set up as the hardest tests on tour. Even for someone like Tiger, there is no substitute like practice under “pressure conditions.”

Tiger has missed birdie putts by the width of a nasal hair the last four holes, and the last one horse-shoed out of the hole. He is going to miss the cut if he can’t get a couple putts to fall, but he’s fighting.

Where’s KFEY? I called the Falcons would be fined a 5th round pick (not 3rd or higher like many others, including him, were saying). Guess who was right with his “trash take”?

Gotta take time to gloat, as you know he would, particularly because he continually disagrees with the accuracy of my opinions and guesses.

I agree, that the Falcons “transgressions” were not really tampering. They contacted players to make arrangements to get them to the facility, to sign their contracts. That is not tampering. It’s being a good host. The NFL really succumbed to the media here, and ridiculously so. Anyone beating the drum for, expecting, and promoting “severe punishment” was being really foolish in my opinion.

Yeah, it gets the NFL some more publicity and they love trades/free agent signings, so they’re not going to discourage it too hard. That’s been my take all along, and you know they love attention, headlines, and most of all, money (which that prior stuff leads to).

A little prediction. With Cousins gone, who will be the new scapegoat. My guess, it will be Darnold. And even if he throws for 400 yards and we still lose, the JJ boys will be on the horn. And since NLV normally points out all the ‘it’s a team sport’ stuff, he’ll still get shot at.
Characters may change but the plot will be the samer.

I don’t know about anointed – but we did draft a rook at the highest point in the first round in team history – with the expectation/hope that he’ll be the guy. That alone is reason for excitement here and every other corner of Viking fandom across the globe. Might could be that he’ll be a bust and wash out of the league in 5 years (my gut tells me differently, same gut feeling I had about Mahomes and Allen)

I also think Darnold could really thrive given the really nice car he has the keys to. If he does I’ll be ecstatic – can never have too many options at the QB spot IMO – if he doesn’t it’ll make way for #9 to get on the field a bit faster and we’ll know what we’ve got (or don’t) that much sooner.

KC leaving was the best thing for both sides. KAM didn’t want to commit long term, KC got that commitment elsewhere.

The only other Vet QB that might’ve been an option long term was Mayfield (unless KAM thought Minshew had long-term potential) Not speaking for anyone else but I’m much more comfortable rolling the dice on a rook with potential than giving Baker $38mm per year.

I realize about drafting JJ and what the future might offer. I was merely pointing out the scrutiny darnold is going to be under – even if he is playing well,,
It was more of a strawman about NLV and his positions.

I wouldn’t necessarily call KFEY or others foolish in this situation, but he in particular was wrong (which is fine by itself) AND he was a jerk about it, so he gets called out. Guy needs a lesson in humility.

This was predictable, though, because it gets the NFL some more publicity and they love trades/free agent signings, so they’re not going to discourage it too hard.

It was clear from the start this was a nothing burger. Cousins said he talked to the PR director and the head trainer while traveling to Atlanta to sign his contract. It was obvious these were coordination calls for the next days events. Yes, we learned that this occurred with two other players the Falcons signed, but using the term “blatant tampering” and insisting “severe punishment” was warranted, was foolish. Even now pundits are doubling down and saying things like the Falcons received a “slap on the wrist” for their blatant tampering. Foolish.

An ENT associated with NASA is giving grand rounds talking about the challenges of surgery in space. Fascinating. Things like pockets of carbon dioxide that build up because of lack of gravity, ventilating a patient adding high amounts of oxygen to the cabin atmosphere (flammability), the cabin of the space station has high microbial loads (smells like gym socks) making a sterile environment impossible, how to operate without being pushed away from the patient as you manipulate instruments, how to control blood flying around, etc…

I think of the psychology of it. Let’s say I was selected as a physician to go on the first mission to Mars (and they will have to have a physician). Weight and volume. They’re only gonna give you so much space for medical equipment and only so much volume. That includes you, so you need to be able to do lots of other stuff than sit around in the fictitious sick bay flirting with Nurse Chapel and stating, damnit Jim I’m a doctor not a geologist. Two year return mission approximately. Long periods where you will not be in touch with Earth and of course the huge delay in communication. You train with these people for years. A fellow astronaut gets severely burned in an accident…trying to treat her…do you run out of options and medical or surgical adjuncts and now in severe pain, terminal. What do you do? After they die, where do you keep the body?

I sure as heck couldn’t do it.

That reminds me, back when we lived in the city of Glendive, had a willow branch that had partially broken and was laying on the wire running between the transformer and our house. I got out my lopper doodad, that extendable thing on an orange pole that has a saw and rope operated snipper…was carefully cutting the base of the branch and when the branch shifted the lopper landed on the wire, big spark ensued and power went out to our house.

The lineman that came out was very nice, took the branch down and reset the fuse, put it down as “wind downed branch” so I didn’t have to pay.

I had a locate done when I was trenching a couple of months ago, but a month later when we moved the fence my wife’s ex was running the Bobcat with post pounder (he used to work for the natural gas company) and as he’s setting up to drive a 2″ pipe six feet into the ground I asked him, “isn’t the natural gas pipeline really close here?” “nah it is like a good foot over that way (weenie).” I was just waiting for the loud hiss and dust flying everywhere, that would have been a nice “visit”.

Had several run ins with the gas company when I worked for a cable company when I first got out of the Army.

Cut one of their lines and you get quite the reaction. Then you get to argue about who was at fault. Don’t remember it ever being ours.

Now the water company, that is another story.

When the hammer or whatever that heavy weight is called gets lifted up in the air and then comes banging down on the pipe you can feel the earth tremble ten feet away. That would do a real number on any 2″ gas line and the presence of the steel pipe jutting out of the ground would firmly establish blame haha.

One summer I worked for the natural gas coop out of Wainwright, a farmer had hit one of our lines somehow and I was sent out to shut off the valve to that region (taking out gas supply to about six farmsteads) and then dig down and deploy a squeeze next to where he had hit it, so that the gas could be turned back on to the other homes, boss was going to come up with some more equipment in a couple of hours so we could fix the break. We were talking before I left about whether we should charge the guy. I took my personal car as the second truck was in the shop.

I turn off the valve, and am them booming along an unfamiliar gravel road in my Mustang, hit a curvy stretch and the damn rear axle starts hopping, I put the nose into the soft muck on the edge of a slough. I ended up walking two miles to the nearest farm house which was the one in question, he came and pulled me out with his tractor.

We did not charge the guy.

We had a large 6′ street saw. We would do an ‘Underground Service Alert’ (USA) as we could, and did, cut everything.

Once marking was done we stopped and hand trenched near any marked utilities. If something was cut (water, power, phone, gas, etc) then pictures were taken of the markings and those would be used to determine blame.

There are four more trees (3 pine, 1 palm) also slowly pushing the block wall over.

Part of the reason I went with an ‘As Is’ sale. Easily $20k to remove all those and repair the wall. I didn’t even remove the stump or roots, only concerned with neighbors house. New owner can deal with it all.

$2500! Well, there’s inflation for ya.

Elm trees with their big canopy would be tricky, but if you tie off a ladder and cut branch by branch as you suggest I bet you can get it done.

FWIW, a different tree altogether, but I cut down all of the hated aspens in my yard in Billings using the ladder and stand in the tree approach, and “wife on the ground yanking on a rope” technique meant no fences or home damage occurred. Cut down all except two, that is, as a guy was driving through our neighborhood and saw me setting up to cut down two in my front yard and offered to cut ’em down for $200 on the spot.

I love felling a tree, using a little wedge so it goes where you want it to, after you’ve limbed it.

I’m not manly enough to do that with trees that close to the house, so I had my father-in-law help with one and he laid it down perfectly. It was an awesome sight to see. The other one was on my neighbors land but leaning over our lp tank. We had the tank moved and the neighbor had a cousin of his cut the tree down. He also dropped it perfectly. Some people have a talent.

That is so beneficial for a lot of stuff. Just gotta make sure you don’t hit the video of someone doing it wrong (that’s why you watch a few of them and surprisingly, read the comments haha).

I did that for my water heater replacement and saved at least $1000.

that’s the plan, limb by limb, maybe tying a few off and having my neighbor pull them away from the house/fence…

I am a total convert to battery powered chainsaws. I have both a smaller bar saw I use as a limber and a bigger 36V one with an 18″ bar that handles anything I need it to do at the compound. Always ready to go, quiet, no fumes, light, no mixing gas.

I have a very large willow tree in my back yard that is reaching the end of its lifespan. I’ve been toying with getting a quote to take it down since I don’t want it to land on the house. If I get that kind of quote, I will definitely find an alternative.

Currently, 15 players out of 156 are under par at the U.S. Open. Schefler is actually playing very well, but all pars through his first 12 holes. Has a birdie putt upcoming. He’s +3 for the tournament at the moment.

That’s the way it’s suppose to be – par is a good score. The PGA this year was a joke for major championship play.

I agree, the best players in the world will make a lot of birdies on courses that aren’t set up, or play, particularly hard. The U.S. Open has a tradition of being the toughest test of golf in the world, year in and year out. If you win a U.S. open, you’ve done something.

Tiger played his first six holes well yesterday, then his putter went cold. Four of his five bogies over the next seven holes, were three-putts. Tee to green, he actually played well. If he gets his putter going, and makes some birdies today, he can make the cut. I think, if he shoots one under today, he makes the weekend.

Think he ‘drove’ the ball well off the tee, but his irons were not very sharp. Some puts caused by poor iron shots leaving long puts.

I agree, he left a lot of irons off to the right. Not sure why that was. He still missed approach putts by six to eight feet though, and also missed a couple four footers for par.

Saw this:

Highest paid QBs (average per year):

Trevor Lawrence – $55M (signed a big new contract yesterday) Last year he was 10th
Joe Burrow – $55M
Jared Goff – $53M
Justin Herbert – $52.5M
Lamar Jackson – $52M
Jalen Hurts – $51M
Kyler Murray – $46M
Deshaun Watson – $46M
Patrick Mahomes – $46M
Kirk Cousins – $45M
Josh Allen – $43M

Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott are probably gonna make some serious money, soon.

If you look at what Lawrence has done in his career so far — 63.8% completion percentage, 58 touchdown passes, with 39 interceptions, and passer rating of 85 over three seasons — you might wonder why the Jaguars made him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks. He isn’t statistically one of the best QB’s in the league. Yet. Last year though, he was 10th in yards, and 15th in TD’s, and had an 88.5 passer rating.

Definitely, but every single QB in the NFL ever, “flashed at times”. Obviously the Jaguars are convinced Lawrence has “it”. Three years in, he’s pretty low from a production standpoint compared to his peers. Last year he had just three more TD’s (21) in 16 games, than Cousins (18 TD’s) had in 8 games. Yet the Jaguars gave him a massive contract. The Jag’s are 20-30 with Lawrence under center, but as you know, I don’t consider wins and losses a QB stat. He is average as a QB at this point in his career, not excelling in yards, completion percentage, TD’s, or passer rating.

Think this is really strange. First year was very so so. Second year first half about the same but played second half well. Last year, a lot like first year – some injuries but he sure forces the ball a lot into coverage.
This is betting on the come big time.

TBH, I wouldn’t consider him a “very good QB”. I would consider what he’s done so far to be “above average”, but that’s about it. WAAAAAAAAAY overrated. Just like Watson, which I said would be a huge mistake to begin with. Lamar and Murray are way overpaid as well. Makes Kirk’s contracts look like child’s play (he was paid what he was worth for production when he was here, IMO).

Well, he was the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, and lots of folks lauded him as the “young GOAT” pretty loudly, right off the bat. The Jag’s have not been a great team the last many years though, and fired their head coach in 2022. Doug Pederson started making them better this past year. We’ll see if he continues to make the team and Lawrence better.

I probably would’ve waited a year at least to pay Lawrence. His rookie year wasn’t good, but Meyer was a disaster as a HC, second year was much better, but last year he missed a fair amount of time with injuries, I’d have waited to see him play a healthy and improved season
