VIKINGS NEWS – Nothing until July 21
NFL News – FTP
Seriously, FTP
Tuesdays are Bash/Defend Kirko days. Have at it. I drank the Kool Aid in 2018, and by December of that year I was convinced he would never lead a team to a championship(he could be carried along like Trent Dilfer, but will never be the main reason a team wins. I feel his pay does not match performance). Pretty sure I am correct on that one, and now we have Sam Darnold and JJ to suck less of the payroll off the roster and the crazy genius Kwesi is building a championship caliber team. I approve.
Media Selection
Training camp is now about a month away. Saturday, July 27 is “Back Together Weekend” and Monday, July 29 will be the first padded practice for the Vikings. Still a long way to go till September, but we’re getting there.
Meetings all day tomorrow then off to the mountains. Behave yourselves and I won’t think about you while I’m hiking and fishing.

Can you watch the debate in the mountains?
I don’t need to watch it to know how it went. Biden will be all hopped up and incoherent, the “moderators” will interrupt Trump as often as they can and as long as Biden has a pulse afterwards and doesn’t fall asleep the media will rave about how great he did. Pretty sad that the president’s bar for a debate is that he lives through it.
Yep, that is pretty much it.
If Thump can keep his head, and I realize that is a HUGE if, keep his cool, he may surprise.
For sure he is going to get slammed with Jan 6 and a 34 count felon – would hope he is prepared with sound answers.
Needs to keep his cool.
I should have just said that I am going to watch fish debate about biting my fly but I wasn’t very quick that time.
1/2 the gag order on Trump is lifted.
Trump can talk about witnesses and jurors.
Trump is NOT allowed to talk about the Judge, prosecutors, staff and their families.
Not sure 1/2 a gag order is even constitutional.
Which means CNN and Joe can say whatever they want and Trump can’t respond.
FJB. I like that one, covers Jill too. I’ll watch close just to see any BS the network and people hosting do.
I am a member of the LGBFJB+ community.
Isn’t it the. prosecutors tied to DOJ that is important at this point.
Yep. That’s was the whole reason for the trial.
Trump can’t respond to that without risking violating the gag order.
It’s a meaningless act by the judge. Surprise surprise.
I will enjoy any free beer, even a sour, or a Blatz.
If I am paying for beer, I prefer malty beers like scotch ales, but sometimes I want the IPA kick.
Yeah, that’s mostly where I am.
I will drink any free beer unless it is just nasty or Bud Light.
If someone offers me an IPA I will drink it.
Agree!!! Booo bowbunch! Booo!!!
Because it is KIRK TUESDAY.
Here is an article showing that KC is the 2nd best QB in the NFL when giving 2.5 seconds or more to throw the ball. CAN YOU SAY ELITE???
However, when throwing the ball in less than 2.5 seconds he does not crack the top 10.
Top 10 NFL quarterbacks by time to throw in 2023 (pff.com)
Makes perfect sense, and is exactly what I saw live vs Buffalo and Chicago in 2018.
Pressure up the middle, Kirko becomes Spaz.
Would be interesting to discuss – rationally.
Pretty sure I am rational about this.
Kirk is a top 10-12 QB, and has been for awhile.
My complaint is he has been paid much better than that, and does not deliver.
Glad he got himself paid, and I am happier that it was not the Vikings overpaying yet again.
Could be quite the drop off at QB this season, but the rest of the team is improved with the dollars saved by not keeping him.
Correct.
To claim that we are irrational is just…irrational.
I wasn’t thinking so much about Kirk.
For example, because of Tua’s concussions the Dolphins put together a system where he can and does get rid of the ball very quickly – most of the time.
The Rams, and Stafford, use a system much like ours that has deeper developing routes thus requiring QB hold the ball more.
The Lemar stuff is interesting but explainable. And other stuff here.
I was not suggesting you or anyone else was irrational. Rather when discussions turn to QB play, seems things lead eventually down ‘one’ road and then things get less rational.
WRT the Vikings – I have no idea if QB play will fall off much, or if the rest of the team is improved much.
All that money goes to JJ now, so no better situation. You realize this, yes?
$35 million < $45 million
If we kept Kirk, we couldn’t keep Jets.
You realize this yes?
I’m not saying we should or could have kept Kirk, but there’s really not that much more money to spread around to enhance other positions like people think. We are at the mercy of lucking out with draft picks, essentially, like a lot of what eventually becomes good teams.
Fair point.
I would argue that we paid Kirk a lot over 6 years and it didn’t help much. Time to try something different. Not saying it works. Just going younger at QB with a stud WR.
Just wait until they give JJ $70 and we are all happy with it because he’s brought 2 rings to Minnesota.
Thanks. And I agree – fine with trying something different. But people act like we’ll have all this money to throw around to upgrade different positions. To me, it’s same song, different verse; a lot of money tied up in a few people (just other people).
My other thought is that even if Kirk was overpaid, would that, let’s say $5 million/year that he was overpaid, have really enhanced the rest of the team that much to make a big difference? My inkling is no. So I wouldn’t blame the failures of the last several years squarely on him being overpaid. He played at a pretty high level IMO, and was not at the top of the list of team problems/failures.
Kinda defeats purpose of cap. Had we signed Kirk, new JJ contract and sign Darrisaw. You have a qb, wr and 2 tackles taking how much money? Bad math.
Not sure what you mean. I am not talking about resigning Kirk – I am talking about the past 6 years with Kirk. People make out his being overpaid to be the solitary reason our team didn’t win anything. It wasn’t even close to that. He may have been overpaid by 5 million per year for his “10-12” ranking status, but that certainly isn’t enough to move the needle on upgrading the rest of the team IMO (especially with what was needed).
In the first part, I am saying now, we have a ton of money tied up in Jefferson and possibly our tackles. Even if JJ is the best at his position, it doesn’t leave money for upgrading everything else (or necessarily keeping other good players). We need a lot more help than those 2 positions.
We agree, we have some position players getting a inordinate of money. How you fix? Doubt league can do anything about that.
Everyone acts like Kirk was the only guy getting paid good money by position.
Just look at that play off game against the Giants. Aren’t Hunter and Z. Smith well played – they did nothing.
Kendricks – high paid LB. He looked like a lost dog out there.
H Smith – pretty well paid, missed a seasons worth of tackles.
And Peterson- don’t know what he was paid, but he was step slow all day.
All those players played like crap
And then Dalvin and JJ didn’t show up either. Think Dalvin was pretty well paid too.
ALL the players need to actually play.
Hmmmm….I detect truthiness
Kirk was overpaid, and overpaid by a lot for 2 of his 6 years here, based on performance.
The front office failed to improve the team around him, and made some bad choices.
However, if they had drafted a QBOTF and kept teddy/keenum/whomever as a bridge qb, they would have had a lot more money to throw around.
Still would have failed, for sure. Since Wryck is a fucking idiot.
I never wanted them to throw $ at kirko. Even though I did embrace the hype.
The extension he got from wryck was criminal.
The extension from Kwesi still baffles me.
Glad he is gone.
I will relish ATL failing
Not this year because there’s a $28 mill cap hit for a player not even on the team. It will give them the room to extend JJets (done, obviously), Darrisaw and others.
Good math – 35 less than 45 but apples to oranges. And ten there’s they could have had Cousins last year for three years at 37 but all of that is water under the damn.
Question can you build a team around a WR being the highest paid player – not sure that has been done, but could be OK.
but as you say you have to hit draft picks regardless.
Or water around the dam if you’re in Mankato.
this is all interesting. I’d say if we don’t start running the ball better, and playing better defense, QB play isn’t all that important anyway.
Interesting.
So why would any team pay big bucks for a QB if their play is not that important unless you run the ball and play defense?
Note playoff teams – these are not mutually exclusive.
OB play is important but come playoff time you need to run the ball some and play good defense.
Look at SB last year. Good QB play, both teams ran ball well and both defense only gave up 19 points in regulation..
And believe I said ‘ isn’t ALL that important’ without a running game and defense.
Nah, Jets is paid a lot less than Kirko.
That 10-18 mil per year will pay for another player.
When JJ McCarthy is no longer on his rookie deal, that is when they will be in the same situation. Unless JJ is better. If JJ is better, and the roster has been build up the next 3 years, you should have another 3-5 years of very competitive before you have to reload again.
And, there is always the chance that the ownership group comes to their senses and puts a cap on what 1 player can make, according to % of the cap
How are things going Ben?
I think the connection between his brain and arm is slower than other QBs. Not bad, but noticeably average. He is better than average with pre-snap reads, the problem is NFL defenses disguise their coverages. If the time to throw was simply from longer routes, his average intended air yards would be above average and through 5 weeks it was not. He was in the neighborhood of some very meh QBs, a rookie and Mahomes who had nobody to throw to but Kelce and Mahomes scrambles a lot to up his average time to throw.
Perhaps so – two thoughts.
One – go back and listen to what Bosa said after the Niner game and Belichek after last year’s Pats game.
That aside, don’t we have presnap reads and then post snap reads (defenses usually change after snap now) and then our receivers adjust their routes post snap too. /would think by design of scheme that is going to require more time.
Hammer’s Viking Rushmore:

Fran Tarkenton
John Randle

I can see that those 4 are good choices.
But for me any list that does not contain Allen Page is wrong.
I would put him in over John Randle, as much as I love John Randle.
That’s fair – I struggled with several spots. Really wanted to add Paul Krause. Same for Doleman. Randle is my all time favorite Viking so he was a lock – but Page is deserving too. As are Eller, Marshall, Yary, Randall McDaniel, Jared Allen and several others….
Bud Grant, P. Krause, Doleman are certainly worthy.
Arguments can be made of the others as well.
It is one of those arguments/discussions that will never be resolved to everyones satisfaction, as personal preferences play a large part.
Who says that Mt. Vikingmore can only have 4 faces? If we find a big enough cliff we can add as many as we want.
Kind of a Ring Of Honor type thing?
Great point on Bud Grant.
0 rings for all 4
Welcome back.
You are sounding a lot like a blast from the past.
.
Thanks captain obvious….
I still swear Moss mimics pulling his pants down, steps in front of the goal post and begins wiping his behind on it when the other guys grab him and stop him.
Thanks for the electrical suggestions a few days ago.
I installed a new GFCI outlet and it handled the camper unless the water heater turned on, then it popped. At least it wasn’t popping immediately though.
Pro Tip:
Always do your electrical work with wet hands and the power turned on.
What up losers
I am in the 27th best country in the world baby!
For MT
USA! USA!
It was a good series, hard fought by both sides, enjoyable for even a non-hockey fan like me to watch.
How can you be from ND and NOT be a hockey fan?????????????????
I know, right? Nor do I like hunting or fishing….I am living in the wrong state.
I really enjoy hunting and fishing, but I am so bad at both things that it turns out I just like being outdoors.
Golf is moderately better, but more expensive and more frustrating.
Well, I never got into hunting or fishing either, but I grew up in the cities and never got into it. Not sure what your excuse is……
Hey, thats me! Hockey is boring on TV, never watched it as a kid. Dad watched Twins and Vikings, pretty simple.
Which four all time greats would be the Vikings Mt.Rushmore?
I’d lean towards swapping Moss for Carter, but I can see Carter included.
All he ever did though, was catch touchdown passes.
Barr deserves consideration for that sack on Rodgers.
Who would you replace to put Barr on ?
But that was epic.
I don’t know that I would, I just wanted to make sure that play is not forgotten. I guess just a plaque at the viewing area. Maybe next to the bronze statue of the Moss moon.
Yep.
Also a picture of Tommy’s Hail Mary to Rashaad TD to get into the playoffs.
Peterson does not belong on it. Total physical specimen but a fumbler with a 10-cent head. Dude couldn’t even stay on the field on third downs because he couldn’t block.
I’d put Foreman or Robert Smith on before Peterson. Probably Ted Brown, too. Heck, probably Terry Allen…
That is my spicy take for today…
Harrison Smith over Adrian.
Pretty sure Harrison Smith helped build Mount Rushmore in the 1930s, so I am open to that.
Then Bill Brown – a tough, tough runner from an era when runners were valuable.
Yeah, I can see no AP.
I’d lean towards John Randle if you are going to replace AP.
I could see John Randle.
I was just trying to stick with RBs that I would put in before AP.
I would be tempted to put Moss on instead of Carter, but I can see why Carter is there instead, so it is not a hill I would die on.
YESSSSSSSSS!
COMPLETELY AGREE!
sorry I yelled
Alan Page, Fran Tarkenton, Randy Moss, Randall Mcdaniel.
Feel free to disagree, but you would be wrong…possibly Cousins over Tark….(I kid, I kid)
Blair Walsh, Troy Williamson, Christian Ponder, Herschel Walker
Now that would be more representative of the franchise we all love.
Don’t forget Bob Lurtsema
I like Bob. I got to meet him when I was a kid.
https://www.startribune.com/bob-lurtsema-s-penalty-the-play-that-changed-the-course-of-the-1972-season/492262251/
If AP is not on it, I was between Randle or McDaniel.
‘Randle or McDaniel’
Or Randall McDaniel?
Marshall, Page, Larsen, Eller. Purple people eaters!
Kirk is overpaid, sucks in prime time, and will never win the big one! Did I cover all the bases?
He doesn’t know how to grill.
well he’s religious, conservative, good family man – none of those things are in vogue anymore.
He likes to go for long walks while his competitors are working on getting better at football.
Oh I don’t mind that. Made my best business decisions when I’d go for long runs.
It just shows his lack of dedication to football.
Says who?
Mahomes doesn’t take days off because he’s a winner.
Says who?
Oh my hero – a great Senator.
.
And a pervert too! At least that’s a girl – I think.
No way to know from a picture. You have to ask her, it, they.
What a loser
He’s also a bad driver and can’t even back a half ton pickup out of a driveway.
I decided to watch the college world series over the hockey game (still caught the last 8ish minutes of the hockey game)..
college sports are REALLY fun to watch.
There has been some great baseball – fun to watch.
I’ve been paying attention to girls college running because of Parker Valby. She dominated at the D1 level. Last night she ran the Olympic trials, and it was interesting to see that next level of separation in talent. The pros buried Valby on the last lap like it was nothing to them.
What is more impressive is that the Africans would bury the ladies who won our Olympic trials even easier. I think the Africans are running 5Ks about 40 seconds faster than our best female athletes, so that means they would win by about 300 meters.
That is total domination.
It’s like the local parents who think their child is a wunderkind destined for the NBA or NFL based on their play in the MT class A league. Take those premier basketball skills to Rucker Park in Harlem.
Reminds me when I moved here 30+ years ago, people asked me if I played hockey. Where I come from, everyone “plays” hockey, but if you are a hockey player, those are the guys that come up to a rink where a dozen guys are playing pickup hockey, ask if they can join, skating in old torn leather Bauers and a stick with duct tape on the blade. You think you’re going to make a break down the right side, new player flips around and pulls in front of you skating backwards, stabs the puck off your stick, and immediately reverses direction going in for a seeing eye wrist shot. Turns out they were the points leader for the St. Albert Saints, played three seasons with the Kamloops Blazers. Hahahaaa…nope I don’t play hockey.
The woman that left Valby in the dust is a dairy farmer’s daughter from Vermont. I hadn’t heard of her before because I didn’t pay attention to the pro level until now.
She is only 5’3, but she is STOUT.
Elle St. Pierre.
Valby was 4th and met the Olympic Qualifying Time so I guess she is now an ‘alternate’. Pretty good for a college Jr.
St. Pierre held off a late run and it was a photo finish. Between Parker pushing the pace and the mad finish they set a record.
It would not surprise me if Valby ends up at the Olympics somehow, someway.
She has got a ton of marketing potential.
Yeah, like you said, she is only 21. St. Pierre is 28.
Valby is used to just grinding people down a the college level. Now she is facing people that have the grind AND kick. She needs to develop a better kick.
Is kicking allowed in running now? That doesn’t seem fair and seems like you would slow yourself down.

That’s a classic!
I was watching both the MCWS and Stanley Cup. A good night of sports!
Just another day in water world…
Found out a buddy lost a good portion of his comic book collection to the flood.
Made me think of MT’s comic book collection…
*sheds tear*
I am hearing that some of my relatives have flooded homes up there. Tough times. Hope everyone is safe.
“Randy Moss Moons the Packers”
And Joe *uck loses his mind.
Glorious !
Yes he did, LOL!
Good morning, SKOL!
FTP!
Sorry to see the Oilers did not win last night.
I stuck to my guns and watched a documentary instead of hockey.
I was rooting for the Oilers, as well.
and Fuck Norm Green!
FloridaSKOL – there’s a pretty good hockey team in southern Florida I hear.
Yep, the Panthers are very good. Over the past few years, I have kinda started following the Tampa Bay Lightning, but, I will forever be a North Stars fan. Fuck Norm Green!
Still strikes me as strange Florida has two really good hockey teams – no ice anywhere.
A lot of northerners have moved down here and they love hockey.
Came that close…just ran out of gas at the end. Full credit to Florida, they have a well coached team and deserve the Cup.
Oilers will go one of two ways, either develop steely resolve and be right back there next year, or…the roster will be decimated this summer and it’ll be another couple of decades before they get back. I favor the latter.
Oh well, not many things will have me watching hockey on June 24th…it was great while it lasted!
Go Oilers Go!
‘I favor the latter’
You would rather ‘the roster will be decimated this summer and it’ll be another couple of decades before they get back’??
That’s what happened in 2006. Both McDavid and Draisaitl are on the last years of their contract. Bouchard will want to get paid.
I think the roster will look very different in September when the new season starts.
