Training camp in full swing. No major injuries to report and that is great news. Lots of useless hype. I do no need to be hyped up. I have already consumed the purple kool-aid. While I still feel 2026 is the season this team breaks through and wins it all, I think they are primed to make a run this season. At the very least, I expect a playoff team with at least 10 wins, and the hopium that comes with a talented young QB on a rookie deal. Gotta win at least 1 before he is on a silly-money contract and the team is again handcuffed.

HOF game is on tonight. I will watch the first half if I can tolerate the terrible play and worse announcing. At least it is football.

When I go to the NFL app to watch the game, it tells me I have to watch it on DAZN. I’m assuming that is because I’m in Canada. Stupid Canada.

At least 72 people have been arrested and 29 human trafficking victims have been rescued following a two-week statewide joint law enforcement operation.
According to Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R-Miss.), the effort, called Operation Guardian Force, was led by the Attorney General’s Office’s Human Trafficking Task Force, the Fentanyl Strike Force, and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.
Clearly it is time to defund law enforcement.
Over 200 Illegals who have committed crimes against children have been arrested in Houston since DJT has been in office. That is more than all of 2024 totals.

I perused a number of the daily training camp reports, and I have to say pundits write for effect. So and so had an “uneven” day today, so and so is looking a little slow, so and so is lighting it up… etc. Clearly the reports are more fire for effect and get as many clicks as you can, these days.

98 and max humidity here today. Just got back from nine holes – two bottles of water, one gatorade and three golf gloves.
Now it’s time for a cold brew.
I can relate JR. Same here. Last time I played, I went through two large Gatorade bottles, and two 16 oz waters for 9 holes. I only carry two gloves, but both were soaked. Got home, and my wife had to help me strip down since my clothes were soaking wet. Took a shower, put a robe on and had a tomato sandwich with ice tea.
The Vikings on Thursday announced the signing of veteran offensive lineman Matt Nelson.
To make room for Nelson, the Vikings waived rookie defensive lineman Alexander Williams with an injury designation.
Nelson originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions following the 2019 NFL Draft out of Iowa. He appeared in 43 games, including 14 starts, with the Lions from 2020-23.

They weren’t going to keep a guy on a 1 year expiring deal, and a top 12 prospect from another organization is a good deal. This isn’t Phlad pocket protecting, this is a good move that sets the team up for the hopeful next owners. And I saw that while also saying fuck the Pohlads. Cant lose the forest through the trees.
Endless mediocrity with Pohlads. That’s a given.
You assume they’ll actually sell. Guarantee they’re still making money. What do they care if the team loses? It would be sweet if the Wilfs bought em though.

Eh… we have one of the best D lines in the league now (IMO) and they are farther along in Flores scheme. Our O-line will catch up.
The Defense should be ahead at this point.
They have great athletes, many have more time in the system, defenses are normally ahead of offenses early in camp. The O-line has 3 new starters and one coming off of a serious of injury.
Context is key.
Yeah, Fries and Darrisaw coming off injury. Sure there is chemistry issues also.
defense is always ahead of the offense at this point. Plus, we have a couple of new lineman to get used to the system.
Ill give it a month before I start worrying about the O line. This is training camp.
I prefer to think our D has improved that much. It’s preseason, so I can allow myself some optimism!
Last PGA tournament of the season before the FedEx Cup playoffs is underway today. The course is playing soft and relatively easy. Gonna have to shoot 66 to be remotely close to the top of the leaderboard. Adam Scott is at 5 under with two holes left on his round. Hopefully he can make at least one more birdie.
I just have nightmarish visons of him getting killed when he uses his legs…
Just use judiciously. Guys with surgically repaired knees don’t need to push fate.
I expect to see McCarthy doing this a lot. He can clearly run, and the pocket isn’t gonna last very long. If it’s not there, he can do one of three things. Take a sack, throw it away, or take off running. I think he’ll take off which will be productive. Just has to be judicious as you said, and slide or get out of bounds.
The one thing that will almost guarantee a screwed up season – he gets hurt. Be smart like Brady, throw the ball away and get it done the next play. Once in a while OK and slide. But with a steady diet, there will be some hits.
Yep. That is the whole conundrum. Do I stay or do I go? Early in their careers, most QB’s aren’t hanging in the pocket for long. If they don’t see it, they take off. Mahomes epitomized this, as did Russell Wilson, Hurts, Allen, etc. Eventually, they all get to a point where they figure out that, in general, running is a bad plan. The sooner they get to that point, the longer their careers will be.
Of course, it also depends on their ability to read defenses, go through progressions quickly, and deliver the ball under pressure.

Using his legs is good, but folks have to understand. The easiest thing in the world for a QB to do is run the ball.

There are QB’s who can’t run very well and it’s easier to throw the ball away.
There are varying levels of talent when it comes to running the ball. Lamar is at one end of the spectrum and Peyton Manning is at the other. But running is very, very easy. See open space, run to it. No brainer, no problem, just simple.
Not if you can’t run.
It’s easier to throw it away then run it, for some.
All young QB’s can run. There isn’t single one who can’t run.
Still some are better than others.

Stafford, Burrow, Rodgers, Goff, Cousins (if he plays), Flacco, would be ill-advised to take off running.
But there’s a good side. These guys avoid “run at pressure” instinct, hang in the pocket longer and at times hit throws down the field.
All pocket passers and with the exception of Burrow, all old school. Both Rodgers and Stafford were mobile QB’s when they were young.
Good to know that he can run when needed.

Yeah, but there’s not much room to “move around” in a collapsing pocket, and the decision has to be made in milliseconds. Hang in, take off, take a sack, throw it away. A lot to consider in one or two seconds.
They don’t have to stay in the pocket when it is collapsing, They can move outside the pocket as JJ (QB) did in this video.
Once outside he can reset, look downfield, and either throw to an open receiver or throw it away. Obviously down and distance plays a role.
The pocket didn’t collapse on him. It was very scattered. He had an immense amount of room to escape. This was super simple. Super easy. Moving around in a crowded, actually collapsing pocket is what I’m referring to.

I’m shocked not shocked they traded Johan Duran. He was literally a big time fan favorite, and a VERY rare pitcher that has RARE stuff. it kind of sucks we traded him
Dude have you seen the state of this team? If you want to get top 10 prospects back you have to trade your talent, there’s no point in keeping Duran on a sinking ship, I hope they get rid of more by the end of the day. When an organization is in this big of a state of disarray and apathy, you have to cut sentimental ties with players. 2023 might as well have been 10 years ago. Sell the players, sell management and coaches and sell the team.

Agreed, but also you need GOOD players to actually get trade value. Jax will be our new closer, and bull pen pieces are always moving around every year. I have a feeling all of these moves are things that were discussed with a potential new owner that may already have a deal in place that is waiting for the last game of the year to announce purchase.

I predicted their record awhile back, but I forgot what I predicted.
If they truly boosted the OL and DL, JJ is the only thing that can stop them from getting to 9, I think. 9 is a realistic starting point for predictions.
It’s hard to go over 9 right now because they play some truly tough teams, which is fine. Beat the best to be the best.
Sometimes the Eagles go to sleep. Maybe they will be bored when the Vikes play them and give us a W-that-should-be-an-L game.
I like 9 as a reasonable win total prediction as well.
