Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

The Ravens are very busy in free agency this year. However, as the Vikings found out last year, winning free agency doesn’t guarantee success on the field.

The Vikings have been fairly quiet, which is okay. I was happy to see that they brought back Eric Wilson, as he vastly outperformed expectations last year and seems to be thriving in Flores’ defense. I could still see the Vikes pulling off a trade or two, maybe try to acquire more day one and two picks for this year, or even accumulate more picks for next year since next year’s draft is supposed to be stacked with talent.

Also, this Linderbaum deal, wowza.

The Raiders are in the mood to spend money, apparently. All the best to Nailor as he moves on, he always gave 100% and was fun to watch. I hope he succeeds (unless he’s playing against us, of course).

Vikings and NFL News

From Sports Illustrated, the Vikings are to sign former Steelers CB James Pierre in free agency. The deal is rumored to be two years for $8.5 million, $3.7 million of that is guaranteed. Reading some of the Steelers’ sites, the fans seem upset that the Steelers let Pierre go. I looked on PFF, and they have Pierre graded as the 2nd best cornerback in the overall category, and the NFL’s best in the coverage category. It’s PFF, so grain of salt, but it’s encouraging.

From Vikings.com, the team was awarded one compensatory pick in this year’s draft. The Vikings received a pick at the end of the third round, the 97th overall pick. This pick brings them up to 9 total picks, according to the site, which means that I was off yesterday when I thought they had 11 picks. Whichever site I got the information from was wrong, I blame them…..and Ponder.

A list of Minnesota Vikings 2026 draft selections, from Vikings.com (so I assume this is correct). Also, a 2026 Vikings free agency tracker where you can see the latest free agency moves the Vikings make.

Tua Tagovailoa to the………Falcons?

The Dolphins released QB Tua Tagovailoa, and there is lots of talk that the Falcons will sign him, per the Sun Sentinel. This came as a surprise to no one, the Dolphins have been telling everyone that they were going to release Tua. This was a dumb move, in my opinion, it eliminated the 0.5% chance of someone trading for Tua and his ugly contract.

The Dolphins will eat a league record $99.2 million in dead cap. Since they’re designating this as a post June 1 release, they can move some of the dead cap hit to 2027 and they’ll ONLY have to eat $67.4 million of that dead cap this year. Some dumb moves by the Dolphins, but what about the Falcons? They sign Kirk to a massive contract, then a few weeks later, they draft Penix in the first round. They eventually release Kirk and his contract (eating a ton of dead cap), presumptively allowing Penix to settle into the lead role, but now they bring in Tua. Huh?? Weird. The Falcons should probably look at getting rid of the GM.

I guess it doesn’t cost them much to sign him, likely only the vet minimum, but why would Tua want to go somewhere where he may not start? I’m guessing they told him that he had a legit shot to be the starter, but I’m not sure that I’d believe anything they say.

Media Selection

I thought I’d play something more serious down here.

The ravens welching on the Crosby trade could have significant impact far beyond just the raiders getting screwed, it could effect agreements already made across the league

Might/could be the case.

Philly, Dallas, Chiraq and Buffalo were allegedly all interested in Mad Maxx.

Philly let Phillips go to Carolina and were rumored to like Greenard.

Trey Hendrickson out there still as well.

More than that, raiders may have to back out of deals they’ve agreed to, sending players back into the market that potentially are higher priorities for teams that signed others, or said players may have to take less money from other teams now that most deals are done. Ravens welching may have a butterfly effect on the whole league

They’re a clown show, fired one of the best coaches in the nfl and now this Mickey Mouse bullshit. You don’t agree to a trade and announce it then default on it, reminds me of the draft day trade where the ravens didn’t do what they were supposed to and the Vikings got skipped, still ended up with Kevin Williams, but still, what a shitshow, how can any other franchise trust them at this point after this fiasco?

I read that the cardinals are holding out to try to get a pick for Murray, like the raiders did for geno where they agreed to eat all contract except for vet minimum for some sort of draft compensation. OK Bow… time for a reality check here. McCarthy is the worst passing QB in the league. He has a 59% on-target pass rate. The league average is 74.5% and Cousins averaged nearly 80% in his six seasons here. Also he has a league worst 24.1% bad pass rate, which is HORRIBLE. You want to just look at the few good plays he makes and ignore all the bad plays he makes. He is more bad than any other QB in the league. Stop gaslighting us. We see with our own eyes that he’s not good.

I’m not gas lighting anything. You hate anybody who isn’t your nephew. I’m saying this entire fan base needs to chill and realize that to have a franchise QB you have to have patience. Maybe JJ will fail, but I don’t see it. Gil Brandt, who has slightly more nfl credential than you says you can’t judge a QB until they have 30 starts. A

McCarthy isn’t going anywhere unless Minny wants him to. Has no leverage. You tell Kyler ‘We want you to do what Sam did – revive your career and earn another payday and this time we won’t make the same mistake and let you walk’

McCarthy takes the demotion or doesn’t – bad look for future suitors if he throws a pity party.

Then….

Kyler throws for 3800 yds, 35 scores and adds another 500 yds and 8 scores on the ground and revives his career and becomes our QB1 and we ship Nine off for pennies.

Or….

McCarthy steps up and takes the job – either in camp or from a Kyler injury (which he’s got a history of) and he becomes the guy many of us wanted him to be – a legit franchise QB….

Or…..

Both shit the bed. Kyler doesn’t make it out of camp. Nine tosses 4 picks in his first game and gets pulled for whoever we’ve got left. KOC gets fired. Jets gets traded. Viktor the Viking hangs himself from the US Bank rafters. Murray gets a job as a live cake topper.

but I’m probably wrong

We want you to come in and be our QB1 for a year at vet minimum since you’ll get paid a shit ton anyway and you get to throw to Jefferson and Addison, we’ll sign you to big money if things work out, or you can cash in with another team if you don’t like the cold.

The Vikings situation is definitely the best available for any QB looking to be a starter, pending the oline being healthy. Outside of center they are decent, darrisaw is good, O’Neill is good, fries is good and the only one to not miss games last year, Jackson was decent for a rookie but also missed time with injury. They have a hole at center, neither Brandel or jurgens were what you would call good, Brandel was better but still mediocre at best.

A couple comments:

First, I don’t think all those signings will do much for the Raiders. They will still be bad this year. Better than last, but still bottom 8. Side comment: Quay Walker is a little b****.

Not a Kyler Murray fan, but the price is right, so I see the appeal. Just don’t think he’ll be a great fit, but who knows. Don’t have many other options – they’ve hitched their wagon to a currently bad QB in McCarthy (he could improve, but my optimism is low). My Michigan-hating instincts and comments about him have proven good to this point.

And finally, I think it’s hilarious how we still talk about Cousins at this point. So polarizing, it’s funny. I, for one, was happy when we had generally reliable and consistent accuracy with our QB – just wish we had a serviceable line at the time. That being said, I would find it really funny if Kirk checked out our discussions weekly about him. I bet he would be laughing all the way to the bank (literally).

I think Vegas really overpaid for the center, but the rest of the deals were in line with market value. Quay Walker is a crybaby bitch, but he is also a good football player, like you said they’ll be better but not great, I think their new rookie starting QB will have his ups and downs but I like him as a prospect. I hope Nailor does well, he seemed a good dude when here.

Also, Kirk laughs at everyone on his way to the bank, especially the Wilfs and Arthur Blank.

I posted this last night as we had an ‘Interesting Evening’.

Just got back from the emergency room.
Friday The Teacher thought she had an infection, went to Urgent Care, culture was negative but started antibiotics.
Sunday she had ‘Stomach Flu/Norovirus Symptoms’.
Today I got back from the gym and she was laying on the bed after her shower in tears because the pain was so bad.
Rushed her to the emergency room (2 miles away), no waiting, checked right in, did blood and urine test, negative. They said Cat Scan, machine was literally across the hallway.
Results come back, kidney stone, (.5cm). Gave her a gang of orders for drugs, send orders to pharmacy. 5 min away, it closes at 7 pm.
We leave the hospital at 6:30, I leave The Teacher in car and run in. The pharmacist says ‘we just got these, they are not ready yet’. I tell the lady, ‘Ma’am she is in the parking lot passing a kidney stone’. She replies ‘Oh crap, we will prioritize this, please just stand to the side’. At 6:50 meds are ready.
Have I mentioned I love this place, 1 hour and 40 min from arrival at the emergency room to meds in hand headed home. The process would have taken all evening, maybe all night in SoCal, maybe longer waiting for Cat Scan.
Went from thinking she was dying to just painful (extremely) to in bed with good drugs and napping. I am emotionally spent and I was just the support animal.

When asked her pain level in the ER she said it was a 9. They finally gave her some morphine and she relaxed, 5 minutes later she had another spasm and the pain rocketed back up despite the morphine.
Yeah, I hope I never have the ‘pleasure’ of dealing with one of those.

Odd she didn’t have hematuria.

The classic description of a patient with ureterolithiasis is they have the appearance of a “cat on a hot tin roof”. While I’ve never seen a cat on a hot tin roof, the description is apt for the patients I’ve encountered. BTW 5 mm is at the upper limits for a stone that will pass spontaneously so I shall pass along my best wishes that it squirts outa there into the bladder.

She was shivering in the ER (and at home) they asked her if she was cold and she replied ‘not really, not sure why I am shivering.’
I don’t know if that is an example of ‘hematuria’ or not?

They did say that it was ‘borderline’ but as it had almost completed it’s path there is hope. They did get her a referral to a urologist in case it didn’t work it’s way thru.

MT Viking
Reply to  SoCalMinnFan
10 March 2026 11:09 am

Hematuria is blood in urine, would be picked up on a urine dipstick. Typically the stone will irritate the ureter lining causing bleeding.

Shivering is non specific, but I would always worry about sepsis. Urosepsis in the setting of an obstructing stone is an indication for stone retrieval. Have her take her temperature 2-3x/day, especially when shivering.

She didn’t have a fever and she went thru Sepsis a couple years ago so we were glad when that was ruled out.
They did mention that she had ‘trace amounts’ of blood in her urine sample, that pointed them toward kidney stone.

Her apple watch monitors her temp constantly, among other things. She has a ‘filter’ to use whenever she pees so she can catch the kidney stone. They said the urologist can determine what it is made of and advise how to keep any more from forming.

We/they were focused on the UTI that she thought she had when she went to urgent care on Friday. I believe they were talking about infection when they said it was negative.
The trace of blood was kind of a side note at that point, they did not mention it till later.

Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or Arizona, I can’t see him in freak show central playing for the jets and I doubt he’d agree to play for that circus of a franchise in Cleveland but who knows, those are the only really guaranteed starters jobs. None of those situations would be appealing enough for Cousins to move from Atlanta, uproot the family, etc. He’s close to the in-laws there, and it’s a good place for him. He isn’t signing with a team just to sign, and there just isn’t a viable situation out there for him IMO.

I think he only takes a deal where he thinks the team can contend for a Super Bowl. Otherwise, I think he moves on to broadcasting. Depends what you mean by “that good” he’s named after Archie manning, nephew of Peyton and Eli. The expectations coming out of high school were pretty immense. I don’t think he’s the best QB in college football or anything, but his first year as a starter was about what you’d expect, some ups and downs but decent overall, we’ll see what he does this year but most likely he’ll go into the draft for’27

I didn’t really see anything special about him either, good arm, decent mobility, ok in most areas, but he’ll be overrated and have higher expectations because of his name. Perhaps he’s better next season but he’ll likely be overdrafted because of his name, not being able to beat out Ewers is kind of telling too. I don’t think he sucks but he isn’t bad either.

Agreed. I have said that for some time. People probably would never/will never know his name if he wasn’t related to the other Mannings.

The Darnold thing will haunt us for years, if not decades (if the planet survives that long, that is).

We had Darnold and Daniel Jones in the QB room, and ended up with McCarthy, Brosmer, and Wentz. Yeah… not a good plan there.

I have serious doubts about McCarthy at this point… honestly. I know the “sample size” is small, but damn… he’s literally the worst passing QB in the league.

I was over it when we let him go a year ago. I will not opine for ex’s. Vikes offered him the same amount and he chose not to stay. Is what it is. Crying about it just gets old at this point.

Been dealing with most of it since 2007ish when I ran Cross Country/Track in college.

I think I fudged it up worse in Paris in October. Tried shockwave therapy and a growth hormone injection. Nothing worked.

Have you tried Dr Alfredson’s Protocol for Achilles Tendinopoly.
It has become the gold standard for just about all tendon rehab programs.

Hey CMy, hope you can get that fixed and you’re back on your feet in no time. Management of the partially torn Achilles tendon would typically be non-operative but the Haglund deformity may weigh in the orthopod’s decision to consider operative management. Peroneus longus splits is pretty common and definitely non operative. Here is a blurb from radsource on Achilles tendon tear management…

The treatment of Achilles tendon tears varies by location and is influenced by the patient’s clinical status. High-grade or persistent insertional tears are primarily treated with resection of any Haglund process and re-attachment of Achilles, but can also be allowed to heal without surgery if the tear is not retracted in poor operative candidates. Management of distal avulsions depends on the size of the fracture fragment with both open reduction, internal fixation and tenodesis employed. Tears at the myotendinous junction are typically treated conservatively outside of high-level athletes. If a myotendinous tear does undergo operative repair, an open procedure is usually needed. Options for treating mid-substance tears include non-operative management, open surgery, minimally invasive (mini-open) and percutaneous repairs.

Nonoperative management traditionally involved 6-8 weeks of cast immobilization in plantarflexion followed by gradual loading; current protocols emphasize early controlled motion and progressive weight-bearing to reduce re-rupture risk. Open surgery involves a 10 cm incision medial to the Achilles allowing excellent visualization of the tendon and is most useful in managing large defects. But open surgery comes with a greater risk of wound complications compared to procedures with a smaller incision, and wound complications can be particularly debilitating given the minimal soft tissue envelop surrounding the tendon. A variety of mini-open procedures, such as the percutaneous Achilles repair system (PARS) or Mini-SpeedBridge technique (which places anchors at the calcaneus), utilize a 3 cm incision located medial to the tendon at the level of rupture and can be used for smaller defects where primary end-to-end repair is possible, with resultant reduction in post-operative complications but comparable outcomes to open procedures. Percutaneous approaches have evolved over the past 3 decades with similar functional outcomes compared to open and mini-open procedures and decreased rates of infection compared to open procedures, but at the cost of greater sural nerve complications. A recently described percutaneous technique may reduce the risk of sural injury.

Both nonoperative and operative approaches can achieve favorable outcomes, although the optimal treatment strategy remains debated. A recent multicenter randomized trial of 526 patients found no significant differences in patient-reported outcomes (Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score) at 12 months between nonoperative treatment, open repair, and minimally invasive surgery. Meta-analyses consistently show higher re-rupture rates with nonoperative treatment (range 2–12%) compared to surgery (1–2%), though nonoperative management avoids surgical complications such as wound breakdown, infection, and sural nerve injury. Patient selection considers activity level, medical comorbidities, soft tissue quality, and the degree of tendon retraction. Active individuals and elite athletes often opt for surgery, whereas sedentary patients or those with significant comorbidities may favor non-operative treatment.

Meeting with the surgeon on Friday.

I’m leaning towards surgery to get the Haglund removed. It’s the size of a golf ball at this point.

The remaining questions are really

  • Detatch the Achilles to shave the deformity or cut into the bone and fold it over to keep the achilles intact.
  • I don’t know how much is partial is on the achilles yet. So, that obviously impacts the options. Sounds like Grade 2?

Vikings did good yesterday signing James Pierre IMO. The guy is 6’2″ which is very tall for a CB. His pass defense stats were great last year, so he looks like a guy we can use. Murray’s management team won’t talk to anyone until the Cardinals officially release him. That is supposed to happen tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET as I understand it. Everyone thinks he’s coming here. If he does what does that say about McCarthy? Bust?

McCarthy’s on-target pass rate was 59% last year. The worst in the NFL. The average in the league is 74.5% and Cousins averaged close to 80% over his six seasons here. So yeah, McCarthy has serious issues throwing the ball. People talk about a small sample size, but Cousins was never a guy who missed his receivers by a large margin, on the regular. He was always known as an accurate passer, even in High School. So I wonder how we’re supposed to have a lot of confidence in McCarthy?

BTW McCarthy also attained the worst bad pass rate in the NFL at 24.1%.

It says McCarthy won’t be the starter this upcoming season, they’re not signing midget clown unless he’s the starter. What it means for the rest of his career is up to JJ, if he develops he’ll be the starter here or somewhere else, if not he’ll likely be a journeyman backup

Murray is not guaranteed to be the starter if he signs with the vikes imo. It would be a very cheap one year deal, and I believe that there will be a legitimate competition between the two during training camp and pre-season.

It would be a one year deal at around 1.5 million. The Cardinals are on the hook for like 30 some million. So he’s gonna make good money either way this season, but his new team doesn’t have to pay much.
