Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Happy hump day, everyone! The Vikings didn’t make a splash prior to the trade deadline, which is not surprising. The Jets were selling like crazy, collectingb draft picks like the kid & I collect baseball cards. Fortunately, it’s the Jets & they’ll likely screw up the picks anyway. The Colts made a huge deal, sending two first round picks to the Jets to acquire Sauce Gardner. There were a few other deals as well, I’ll put links down in the news section.

Only a few more short days until Vikings football! The purple and gold take on the Ravens at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, kickoff is at noon. I’m excited to see if McCarthy and the offense can build on the game they put together against the Lions. I like that the offense was more balanced, so let’s hope they continue to lean on the run when it’s effective. The Vikings will need a strong offense if they want to get a W against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Lamar is not an easy guy to contain, so the Ravens will likely put some points on the board, the Vikings will need to put up more if they want a win, according to John Madden. Let’s hope they do!

Vikings and NFL News

The Vikings moved up the power rankings after their big win in Detroit, Vikings.com has the details.

The Sporting News claims there was lots of activity surrounding a T.J. Hockenson trade prior to the deadline. I don’t buy it, it would have screwed the Vikings, salary cap-wise. No, the soonest Hock will be moved will be in the off-season, likely after June 1.

The latest trade deadline news from around the league, courtesy of ESPN.

Jacoby Brissett is the new starting QB in Arizona as Kyler Murray recovers from a foot injury, per NFL.com. Rumors about a ‘soft benching’ abound, but you never know. Brissett did look sharp last night, but it was against the Cowboys, so take it with a salt block.

Trade dealine highlights from CBS Sports: The Jets trade CB Sauce Gardner to the Colts, the Cowboys acquired Logan Wilson from the Bengals, and the Dolphins sent edge rusher Jaelen Phillips to the Eagles.

Media Selection

This guy is pretty funny, even though I think he’s a Packers fan. This one summarizes the upper midwest very well. Enjoy!

There will be no need for a tiebreaker.

The way too early playoff rankings show the Vikings in 10 currently. One game behind both the Loin and the Bores, both of which they have the tie-breaker on currently.

It at least helps us with our ‘voting guides’ going forward.

If we are fixing English, you shouldn’t end a sentence with a preposition or a preposition/adverb combination. Therefore, you might consider

“One game behind both the Lions and the Bores, and we currently hold the tiebreaker over both of them.”

I’ll be honest… I didn’t think McCarthy would be on the list. I didn’t notice till people started commenting. I was actually focused on Lamar. McCarthy’s only thrown the ball 65 times this year, and these lists usually have like a minimum of 100 throws. I guess it’s all the current starters though.

Laughing the LIV tour was created by a bunch of people that paid PGA Tour players to come play on that tour. Lots of top players took the money and changed tours. The LIV tour got its name because instead of four rounds (72 holes) their tournaments were 3 rounds (54 holes) LIV is 54 in Roman Numerals. This week, the LIV tour announced this coming season they would be playing four rounds like the PGA so their golfers could then qualify for the OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings). So now that they’re playing 72 holes I decided they needed to be the LXXII tour (72 in Roman Numerals).

The Ravens have the 28th ranked pass defense in the NFL, allowing 250 YPG and 14 passing TDs. They allow opposing QB’s an average passer rating of 99.2.

McCarthy averages less than 150 yards a game, and has a 73.0 passer rating.

In looking forward to the Vikings game against the Ravens, obviously the running game is going to be a key factor. Honestly I think whichever team does the better job of stopping the run will win Sunday. Lamar is not the running threat he used to be, but he can still make plays with his legs. Henry has also not been as big a threat running the ball as in the past, with several teams shutting him down this year.

I think if we stop Henry, we win.

It would be good if Jones can go too. Mason is a fine runner, but Jones is for sure a better pass blocking RB and a better pass receiving RB – that has become fairly evident.

If Jones can’t go it would help if Ham can. Ham is a more than adequate pass blocking RB.

I think having Hamm back in the line-up would be huge actually. Jones has an AC sprain, but I heard they think he can still play. Dunno about that. Guess the injury report today will give us a clue. Jones is definitely the best RB on the team though, for sure.

Little more worried about our secondary. You have to contain Lamar in the pocket or he will kill you. But to do so, requires a lot of asserts upfront which puts big pressure on the backend guys. You watch more Ravens than I do, but can recall defenses trying so hard to keep him contained, he actually has five or six seconds ro throw.

Lamar has actually become more of a pocket passer than ever. He likes to take deep drops that gives him space to operate, so teams that can get immediate pressure on him are going to do better. He’s a good broken field runner, but he wants to throw the ball more now. He’s actually the highest rated passer in the league, with a 136.4 passer rating. He has 14 TD’s and 1 interception in his 5 games he’s played this year, with a 72.9% completion rate. I think teams do have to play Henry hard, and also “spy” Lamar, which makes it hard to play the pass. So yeah, we’ll have our hands full, but I still think stopping Henry up front will be a big factor.

I woke up to learn that my property taxes have increased over 1k per year over 10 years, thanks to the local school referendum passing. They got used to the “free” covid money, and since that dried up, and because the governor spent the entire billions surplus, they just steal more money from me.

My friend lives in Denver, and his home is worth double what mine is, and he pays less in property taxes.

I hate Minnesota…

North Dakota kind of sucks for property taxes as well….the legislature keeps trying to address it but never gets much done.

They need to just remove property tax for residential property and keep it for businesses. That was my big gripe with the proposal last year, Wal-Mart doesn’t need a break on property taxes.

The game against the Lions was definitely the best the team has played all season. The defense was great, the special teams were very good, and the offense ran the ball the best they have all year, setting up our passing game nicely. It all clicked for this game. This was what I was expecting the team to look like this year. Exactly.

Now we just have to keep doing it. Get the lead early, run the ball effectively, and force the other QB to play from behind so we can rush him and force bad throws.

Jayden Daniels sure has had a tough second year after being really good as a rookie. A lot like C.J. Stroud. I’m not really understanding it. Is it the pure progression based O, where it’s more about finding an open guy than reading a defense? Is the first guy covered more than last year forcing him to go deeper into reads? If so, is there enough time to let him do that? Last year I saw him make several very good progression reads and throws, but this year he looks slower on the draw. Is he trying to process more this year and it’s slowing down his play? Trying to take that next step in his evolution, and it’s a bit bigger than he thought it might be?

I don’t know, but he was beyond the pale good last year and maybe it’s just hard to achieve that same standard or something. Whatever it is, I have not seen the same guy I saw last year for sure.

Hoping this is just a learning curve thing and once he heals up from his injuries, he can settle back into being Jayden Daniels. He’s a good kid.

I think so to some extent. He is slower on getting the ball out, or not throwing it and taking off running a lot. Kliff Kingsbury has run some route concepts that I don’t like much too, so it’s never one thing in the NFL. McLaurin has missed a lot of games too. Still, I think Jayden is either trying to do too much, or he’s just not seeing the field as well this year. I’ve seen him not take throws that are there, while looking for something else. I’m like “it’s right there, just take the throw”. But he works a part of the field I’m thinking he has no business even looking at. Last year he seemed right on with his reads and progressions a lot, which really impressed me. I mean top tier reads. This year he seems to have regressed in that department, which makes no sense.

His number one receiver has been hurt just about all year and the number two has missed several games. Daniels himself has also been inured and missed several games. There’s been very little offensive continuity so far.
But clearly, Daniels has played enough that is plenty of film on him and defenses are makiing things tougher for him.

Maybe a coaching thing. Last year they allowed him to go by his natural instincts and athletic ability. This year they may be working on him actually learning the position of QB in the NFL.

Also teams have had all off season to review his film and pick up on his tendencies.

yes, republicans got beaten badly across the board. Its time for people to realize that Trump, although a great president, is an unpopular politician. Even though he won the last election, he barely scraped by against Biden and Kamala – who were both terrible candidates.

I expect the Republicans to get beaten badly in next years Mid-terms.

Two thoughts.
First, Virginia (lived there for 50years) and NJ are very blue states. In NJ alone, there are a million more registered democrats than republicans. Thus, even if Trump were very popular, doubt the outcome would be different.
Second, the big election issue was affordability and granted the Republicans and Trump have not addressed this well – have done some long range things but prices are still very high on most items. And people are upset with this. Trump ran on he was going “to bring the price of eggs down.”
But interestingly, talk from politicians is cheap, and I have yet to hear ONE solid idea from the democrat candidates that would actually work.

Agree the Democrats have no ideas that will work.

Regarding the first point, the losses were much worse than Trumps margin of defeat in the presidential election…Truth is Trump has gotten much less popular since he was elected, and he wasn’t that popular in the first place.

Might as well change the Filibuster Rule.
The Dems tried to eliminate it and kicked out the two Dims who sided with the GOP to keep it. Chucky stated with those two gone they would eliminate it but then DJT won and the Rep won the majority. The Dems will get rid of it as soon as they get the Senate Majority back.

Its a good rule as long as people are willing to act and behave in the best interests of the country….

But when you can no longer disagree with civility, and you block the majority on every front, then it is no longer a workable rule.
