Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It’s the peak of the week, it’s all downhill from here into another fun-filled weekend. Too bad there’s no Vikings football to make it even more fun. This is gonna be a LONG offseason. 3 more months until the draft, that’s 1/4 of a year, and that’s a long time to wait. Thank God for ice fishing.

In football news, I was shocked that the Ravens fired John Harbaugh. Harbaugh is a very good coach, and will have zero trouble finding a new head coaching position. Maybe the change will help both the Ravens and Harbaugh, but I think the Ravens are going to regret that decision.

Vikings and NFL News

Tom Brady is doing his best to coax Brian Flores to Las Vegas to coach the Raiders, per Yahoo Sports. Don’t do it, Flores, stay in Minnesota.

Vikings.com takes a look at where the Vikings ranked among the major power rankings. They’re at or very near the middle in all of them.

Sports Illustrated looks at who would replace Brian Flores as defensive coordinator, if he were to happen to leave for a head coaching gig.

Keep up with the latest NFL coaching and GM changes and rumors at CBS Sports.

As was mentioned above, the Ravens fired John Harbaugh, who had served as the team’s head coach for the past 18 years, details from NFL.com.

The Lions fired their offensive coordinator, John Morton, after only one season, per NFL.com. Wow, that was quick. I’m guessing that he and Campbell didn’t mesh very well, and the offense DID take a gigantic step back this year, which most smart folks knew would happen after Ben Johnson left.

Irresponsible, vitriolic, and reckless rhetoric from political leaders attacking law enforcement has real and dangerous consequences for officers on the street. When officers are vilified, demonized, or used as political props, it fuels hostility, emboldens bad actors, and puts lives directly at risk. This despicable, insidious conduct must have consequences, and I submit qualifies for prosecution for sedition.

So true.
What I find so strange about all of this, if you get even a little mouthy with a TSA agent at an airport, you’ll get arrested. And that crowd is the lowest of the low when it comes to federal agents.
Ice are big time federal agents.
This is flat out crazy.

To move a society from one Governmental state, to another, one must first establish that one group of people is being oppressed by another. This is why we are seeing an ever growing condemnation of whites as oppressors to people of color. Focusing on the tools of oppression like law enforcement is standard operating procedure. Keep messaging that the status quo is evil, and they are actively hunting down the oppressed, and disappearing them. Keep saying over and over it’s horrific, it’s unfair, and indeed it’s evil. Convince the populace that only “your” side can save the country.

Ok, your in the military and get new orders. Put your house on the market, oops can’t sell it to a corporation who plans to rent it. Boy, I’d love that.
You and I have a small business, we buy crap homes, fix them up and then rent them. Oops, folks can’t sell to us.
And in the larger sense, you take potential buyers oout of the market so there is more supply and less consumption – what happens to prices. ALL homeowners lose equity in their homes.
I could go on,but this is socialism much like what Mandani is trying to do in N Y.
Free markets are just that, free.

But normal consumers can’t compete with huge corporations. You want to buy a house that is $350K but a big Corp comes in and buys it for $400K. Sorry, you don’t get a chance to buy the house. Corporations have much deeper pockets than you. This is happening in the country. Corporations are making it impossible for citizens to buy a home. They are buying out entire communities as they’re being built, so consumers don’t get any chance to buy. That is reality.

The market determines the “value” or price of a home, or all commodities for that matter. The only time this get f’d up is when gov’t puts some rule in place that serves to distort the market.
If the market say my house is worth 500k and someone pays that, anyone or any institution, that is the way it should work. If we say well this group of buyers can’t buy, so there’s less buyers available. That happens, and now can only get 450 for the house. I got screwed as a seller.
Bernie would say corporations are screwing over people.
Since this used to be my business area, you know what the two biggest reasons are that people can’t afford a house (set aside interest rates) – student debt, and overall huge installment debt. Or, living beyond their means.
What have Americans done throughout history. They lived modestly, sometimes worked several jobs and saved their money to get a down payment.
And, how many people do you see nowadays willing to buy a ‘fixer upper’ and then work their asses off into making it a nice place.
Government regulation is not the answer, at least in my mind.

I assume you own your home, so this doesn’t affect you at the moment. But wait till you want to buy a new home and you can’t because corporations are buying them all, and all you can do is rent a house. Oh by the way, they can monopolize the rent market and charge whatever they want.

I remember quite well buying my first home, And I remember working two jobs, as did my wife, so we could save and get a DP.
And in the last year, just had all my three kids buy their first homes – and I didn’t give them one cent.
Tough sure for them, but I still don’t want the government into regulating the real estate market.
And I believe you have rents backwards. So a corp buys up a bunch of houses in a market, What are they going to do with them – rent them. What happens to prices when supply goes up? Prices go down. That’s just basic supply and demand.
So let’s run this out in a macro sense, Rent prices go down (naturally). And people have a choice to rent or buy. Rents down, what does that do to the market of buyers looking for houses – there’s less, So if home sellers want to sell their house and induce a market with less buyers, what must they do – ask less for their house.
Let the market work – it will.

You’re missing the point completely here JR. There are Corporations formed to buy up and own all the Real Estate. Your working two jobs, and saving money doesn’t matter, because the housing is being bought up by Corporations with much deeper pockets than you’ll ever have, and the only option for you will be to rent a property from them. This is happening today, and it needs to be reined in, OR ELSE no citizen will ever be able to buy property. BTW some of the Corporations are Chinese owned, and other countries.

JRobert
JRobert

But while corporations have deep pockets, they also need to make money. They simply can’t buy up a bunch of houses and. then jack up rent prices. The opposite will happen and their ROI will tank.
A real world example that happened to me as I was retiring. We contracted to build our retirement home down here in a respect golf community. All was great.
But over time the community changed. As you note, a bunch of big investors bought up many houses and established rentals. So what happened next was a bit tragic to us. Found out no one wants to live in a rental community. Owners starting selling their homes and prices took a huge hit. We lost a lot of money before we moved in. We didn’t want to live there either so we sold and lost money as prices crashed. Then rental rates crashed and all the big investors lost too and sold..
As I learned, the market works quite well.
And if you look around in MLS, there is no shortage of houses to purchase. In fact, just read a recent real estate report in this area, there are far more homes for sell than there are buyers.

Amen.

What really resonates is how few young people are willing to buy a place that needs real work and fix it up with their own blood sweat and tears. Probably what the boomers said about this early gen x-er back in the day. Nevertheless, all the way through our early years through school internship residency fellowship and beyond my wife and I have progressed through a series of homes with the first one at what would be considered ghetto-ish by current college grads all the way to the present day where I am still swinging sledge hammers, pulling wire, and replacing toilets in the “Love Shack”.

Have you guys looked at the side by side of wage growth compared to home prices over the last 70 years? I am pretty confident saying that I make more than most people (outside of gougers), and if I didn’t own the house we are currently in, I would have a hard time affording anything. We do not have a fancy house, it was built in the 50s, on a very small lot and I don’t know if I could afford it at the current market prices. We do not live lavishly either. We have two vehicles, the newest is 10 years old. We don’t go out to eat very often and I buy very little “recreational” items, yet somehow, at what the internet says is above middle class, we’re not sitting here rolling in the dough. The housing market has gotten stupid. If I had this same job 15 years ago, I would be living on 100 acres with a 3000 sq foot newer built home. Now I could barely afford to buy something on the south side.

JRobert

That is true and I have thought about that. Especially with three kids that just recently bought homes.
Real Estate prices have clearly out paced wages by a very large margin.
But what’s the answer? I don’t know – really.
But also know, if the government gets involved it will get totally f’d up in the long run.
And it’s not just real estate but many other large ticket items. Hell, look at the price of a new car – more than a house used to cost.
Would love to hear some reasonable answers – but not the socialist stuff.

I came into being in the late 60’s. Median home prices tracked about 3-4x average income in the 70’s…now it is getting close to 6x. I would submit that the average median home of 2026 is significantly more lavish than the average median home of 1974, just comparing what is sitting in the middle of the market in Billings vs what was middle of the market in Edmonton back then (we lived in that home between postings until 1981 so I definitely remember it well when I was in junior high). Pretty standard now to have multiple bathrooms, big kitchen, finished basement, etc. However, I am conceding that the average home is about twice what it used to cost 50 years ago.

Interest rates tracked about 10% back then, that has an inverse relationship with home prices.

What does Zillow say your home is worth?

You also live in a very desirable (by Montana standards) location that caused inventory to drop dramatically during the pandemic thanks to in migration. That population growth has continued to spur economic and commercial growth in the regional hub you live in. Affordability would improve if you moved to a less desirable location in Montana.

My house has more than doubled in “value” in less than 8 years. There is no way a 1956 built, 2300 square foot home with very little yard and a garage that barely fits 2 four wheelers with a half finished basement should be worth 400k. I’m working on the moving part. The problem is I have a good job here so I’m just trying to convince my wife that living 30-45 minutes out of town is worth it.

The bullet hole was in the windshield. The agent was directly in front of the car and she hit the gas. He fired to protect himself. You can spin it in your head any way you want. He was in front of the car, she was ordered to stop and get out of the car, and instead she chose to run over the ICE agent. That’s the facts.

It looked like she panicked.
She was virtue signaling by blocking the road, ICE told her to move, she refused so they went to move her. When an agent reached in the car to unlock the driver door she hit the gas. An other agent was standing in front, and he shot her.
She probably meant to drive away but in the one second the agent had he saw a SUV coming toward him. He had been injured in a similar pervious incident. Her wheels were initially were pointed straight and she turned to the right just as he fired. She might not have known the agent was in front of her when she hit the gas as she was focused on the agent trying to open her door.
I don’t think it was murder or domestic terrorism, more virtue signaling gone wrong. She FAFO the hard way.

Contracts are getting to the point of lip service.

GMs get the player to sign a contract, then a couple years later they force the player to restructure or get released, whether they are playing well or sucking.

Players sign a contract and if they aren’t happy after a couple years they start posting cryptic things on social media hinting they could be happier on another team.

In college though, a QB who just signed an NIL for WA, then entered the portal.

I think this happened within weeks of each other.

So contracts are meant for an organization to take “ownership” of a player. Contracts ensure they own the rights to the player. Recently player representatives have been doing a more aggressive job of protecting the player with guaranteed money and no trade clauses. That’s the only defense a player has. Otherwise, teams can do whatever they want with a player and they are powerless to stop it.

Must have been Rumple Minze.

Many a time I would drink “Dead Nazi’s”. 1/2 Rumple Minze, 1/2 Jagermeister.

Another fun one that tasted better was Russian Quaalude. Stoli, Baileys, Frangelico and Khalua. Mmmmmm

Purple Hooters came around then as well (87 Vikings). Basic Kamikaze made with good vodka and Chambord.

Spent a few years tending bar, and learning what I liked. I like beer, but at times any one or three of those shots would be consumed.

Heh heh you should apply to medical school, then you could have all your questions answered during the male reproduction lecture.

True story, one of my classmates that was in our small group breakout for the first 8 weeks of school went on and on and on and on and on about how he had heard from prior grads that the school would show porn films for an afternoon so we could learn how stuff works. Keep in mind this was in 2000 so the internet existed and I doubt there were very many people in my class that didn’t have a good idea of how things worked.

His rabid enthusiasm for this afternoon of porn viewing culminated in his asking the head of anatomy during an awards ceremony when this was going to take place and which films would be aired. The prof said, and I quote, “we have never shown porn films at this medical school.”

Same classmate, strangely enough, was invited out to dinner with his wife by an attending physician in Bismarck and his wife, and the attending’s wife told classmate’s wife that “a lot of single attractive women will offer themselves to your husband during residency, and you just have to accept that’s what he needs during those stressful times.” Uh huh.

I think Cousins will likely retire. He is settled near his in-laws, and it might just be time. Let’s be real here. Name a team that needs a QB where he could go and reasonably expect to win with. Atlanta looked like that opportunity, but boy, talk about dysfunctional.

IDK about that, KIrk is a quirky guy but from everything I’ve ever heard from him he’s incredibly competitive and driven. He actually played pretty well down the stretch. Teams that could be interested in him as a starter would include Miami, LV, NYJ, NYG, AZ, NO, and there would be significant interest from most every team if he were willing to sign as a backup, including the Vikings. You may be right though, he might just retire and adjust his spreadsheet schedule for different activities, though I’m sure he’ll still have Tuesdays off for shagging Julie.

The Vikings burned their bridges with Cousins when he offered them a below market deal, and was summarily rejected by the front office. I don’t think this is in the cards.

Not that wild of a guess, there are reports that teams with current HCs are reaching out to Harbaugh’s agent.

I’d think Harbaugh would be pretty much the first choice as an interviewee for any potential HC position in the NFL.

Yeah. But Harbaugh has said no to Las Vegas.

But currently Miami doesn’t need a coach…..
Which job does Harbaugh want?

There have been a lot of folks saying Mike McDonald is on the hot seat, and the Dolphins are not opposed to moving on from him. I think they weren’t intending to pull that string yet, because let’s face it, the whole head coach search thing is a very difficult process, but with Harbaugh suddenly available, they might reconsider their position.

I think it depends on what they do at GM and who he wants as HC, I’m guessing whoever they hire will have the right to keep or get rid of McDaniels

Yeah because McDaniel is still the coach.
Miami could fire the coach to hire Harbaugh.

Thats what I said to start this convo.

That one tweet is funny. I would take Nacua over JJ in a second. JJ is dainty. Nacua is a monster. He is going to get PAID.

By the way, fire KOC and hire John Harbaurgh.

This being able to work from home kind of cuts both ways. I didn’t go into the office yesterday and I am not going in today as I have a nasty cold. I still worked 8 hours yesterday from home. I have a ton of sick time but can’t use it if I work.

I spent tbe last 5-6 yrs of my working career working from home. A double edge sword. Downsides were:

– ALWAYS expected to be available
– never really take sick time
– very hard to communicate always via phone and Zoom calls
– nowhere near as productive per hour worked

I love working remote and always have. for 25+ years I have worked 1 or 2 days per week from home. Software/DB developer mostly. Whenever I am in the office the “walk up” questions and many distractions make it very hard to focus. Here at my home office I can focus on writing code without needing the noise cancelling headphones that people in the office ignore and tap me on the shoulder to interrupt me.

I do agree that there are times when a group needs to meet face to face. I dispute the productivity part. At least in my job, I have always been much more productive working from home. And when I did have to be in office, I would start work at 6 am and get more done prior to 8:00 than I would the rest of the day….

I don’t miss fil – he was a woke jerk. I made a comment once about a game where the ref gave the ball to the opposite team of who came out of the pile with it, and I said I thought it was the new girl ref, and he went haywire on me calling me a sexist, etc. Hated him since then.
