Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Now that Kyler Murray has officially been released he is reportedly going to meet with the Vikings immediately. It seems likely he will sign with them as they have the best situation for a QB with the skill position players they have. I guess the only question is if they guarantee him the starting position, which I assume they would, I don’t think he’d sign to be a backup to McCarthy. Murray reportedly would sign to be a backup for the rams according to this article. Aaron Jones is coming back to MN after agreeing to a paycut. That is good, though I do think Mason will get more carries than he will next season. I also think Jones will get pretty much all third down snaps as he’s a great blocker and receiver. Hopefully he stays healthy.

Assuming they sign Muray, the Vikings still have some needs at this point, where they need to make some decisions are at the interior of offensive and defensive lines, shocking I know. I’d assume Redmond will be a starter on the dline, but what do they with the other two spots? Rodriguez was pretty good in a backup role last year, playing around 50% of defensive snaps, they also have Ingram-Dawkins who they drafted last year, he played mostly ST but did play around 25% of defensive snaps. I don’t expect they’ll go into next season with them as the starters, maybe Rodriguez is penciled in but they are definitely going to need depth, I think there is only one other dlineman on the roster, my guess is they sign and draft a couple players.

They’ll need to decide what they’re going to do at Center. They have Jurgens and a couple young guys who haven’t sniffed the field, as well as Brandel, who isn’t a Center but played there out of necessity. Neither Brandel or Jurgens had performances you would consider above average but neither were Elflein level bad. I’ll be curious to see what they do there, my guess is they want someone more established at making protection calls and identifying blitzes considering the QB will either be someone completely new, or the young and inconsistent JJ.

The rest of the roster is probably mostly set other than depth, particularly at LB. We’ll see if the geriatric decides to retire at the safety position, but it seems as though the team likes Jay Ward’s development and they also have Metellus as a starter and Moreau as depth. They’ll need more though. Personally I’d like to see the Hitman back for one more year, even in a reduced role, plus the Wrenage meme’s are hilarious. At CB it seems they’ve settled on starters with the new guy Pierre, Rodgers, and Murphy, but if a high end corner should drop to them in the draft I think they’d take him, other than that they could use some depth with playing experience. The rest is all just depth needs, could use a backup swing tackle, another edge rusher will be needed after they trade Greenard, draft a TE to take over for Hock after next season, figure out WR3 etc.

O’Connell said he had a “great conversation” with J.J. McCarthy this week about his offseason. As for the starting QB, he said, “I don’t believe we have to name one of those currently.”

So right now we don’t have a starting QB as I see it.

I parse it as ‘I am not going to NAME one right now, that doesn’t mean we don’t know who it will be come Sept’.

I’ve had a couple of beers so help me figure this out.
As I recall KOC has said several times the number one quality he values in a QB is accuracy. So we are about to start his fifth season as HC and we don’t have a QB on the roster that can throw the ball accurately.
And his second desirable trait, was for a QB who was willing to. stand in the pocket, wait for the play to develop, and then deliver an accurate throw knowing he is going to take a big hit. Don’t believe we have that either.
What is going on?

I think he said the number one trait he valued was decision making, but I could be wrong. Still, yes, he wants a guy who can deliver the ball on-target with regularity. He’s a pass first offense kind of a guy. If you don’t have a guy who can throw the ball well, that offense is gonna suffer.

Hey, according to some thats the ultimate end goal of a team is just make the play offs and then luck to the super bowl. And its better to try and do that then build a team that could be a steady conference contender to actually get to the Bowl. So we should be happy we win only 9-10 games and sneak in a WC game. Thats a fun season right?

I think he’s doing the best he can with what he’s got. The Vikings dug themselves a $43M cap hole last year, so now it’s time to pay the piper. That $1.3M contract is the reason Murray is here, and also it potentially turns into a long term deal. This year is a bit of transition year. That said, the offense is mature and full of talent. The table is set for Murray, just as it was set for McCarthy last year. We’ll see if Murray can take the reins and make the offense go.

Have you watched Murray play ( I’m sure you have so don’t mean that negatively), he plays sandlot football
KOC runs an offense that the scheme gets the receivers open, he just needs the QB to read and then throw it. He doesn’t need sandlot.
Like putting a drag racer into and Indy car.

Rickie Fowler bogeyed the 14th hole to fall to 1 over par, and losing ground to the leaders. Looked like he was ready for the fork. Then he birdied 3 of his last 4 holes to finish the round at 2 under par. He missed several birdie putts including one from 7 feet, then on the next hole from 3 and half feet. All said and done he’s 3 shots out of the lead playing very ordinary golf. Tees off at 8:40 a.m. tomorrow. He needs to shoot 5 under to be in the mix in my opinion. We’ll see if he can up his game a little.

So the least surprising signing of the start of the season. Murray now has to hit the books hard. Has to learn the offense and also be able to spit out the plays confidently. This is the hard part for him. Skull sessions learning the scheme, and the intent of every play. What are we trying to do here? Who are we trying to influence? What defensive alignment is optimum. What adjustments are built in? Hot reads? Protections? Sight adjustments? Possible route adjustment options by the receivers? Lots to learn.

Murray now has to hit the books hard’

But that is not who he is. I wonder if the Vikings included that in the contract like Zona tried to do but didn’t work out too well.
Supposedly Murray insisted on a ‘No Tag’ clause so they couldn’t use a ‘tag’ on him if he had a decent season.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  SoCalMinnFan

Well, he is signing with a team that has all the ingredients necessary for him to cook. it’s smart demanding a no tag clause. If he plays really well, I’d expect there will be some suitors for him in 2027. Vikings will have spend some money to keep him.

I have heard all the stuff about the clause that required so many hours of film study per week in his contract (which was eventually removed) because the word on the street was he was playing video games more than preparing to play. I don’t know if he has grown up, and realized that he can never stop investing in his growth. I also don’t know how much mentally he can handle.

Is he QB1? Will anyone ask KOC about that?

From ESPN:

EAGAN, Minn. — Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced Thursday.
The deal is for one season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Murray now will become part of a QB room that includes former No. 10 pick J.J. McCarthy.
The Vikings will pay $1.3 million of the $36.8 million Murray had already been guaranteed via his contract with the Cardinals, who agreed March 3 to release him. The move was not official until Wednesday, but the Vikings had decided weeks prior that Murray would be near the top of their priority list in seeking competition for McCarthy.
They were also interested in veteran quarterback Geno Smith, but the Las Vegas Raiders traded Smith to the New York Jets before he had a chance to reach the open market.

yeah, I guess the deal needed to include a no Franchise Tag clause so the QB can pull a Kirko and make bank next season.

if it is league minimum, I do not hate it.

But I see Murray doing just enough that the vikings are afraid of a Sam Darnold thing, overpay for Kyler, trade JJ, and JJ wins a SuperBowl before the Vikings even get to another NFCCG failure.

So that’s hard to say, since wins are a team stat, which you seem to have a hard time accepting/understanding. What Murray “can” do is improve our level of QB play. I think he will do that. Not monumentally, but certainly he’ll provide better play under center for us.

Crying people make me uncomfortable, especially if it is a woman and even worse, when it is your female boss. Someone asked an innocent question at lunch the other day about what her boyfriend thought about something. That led to her saying that he was gone and started to cry.

The dude had no class at all. They had been dating for 4.5 years and had lived together for at least a year. She came home from work one day last week and he was gone with all of his stuff. He left a note saying that it wasn’t working and not to call or text him, just email. She had no clue. He had made no indication that they were having problems. They had just gone on a trip to Mexico with his step-brother and sister-in-law last month. He just gave her a commitment ring about 5 month ago. She watched her Ring camera footage and she saw him walk up to the cameras and put tape over them. Once he got all of his stuff out, he took the tape off the cameras.

I feel like I should start a reality show called Breakroom Drama. I hear so much gossip in the break room.

think it was in the nineties cowboys drafted a linebacker ( Coakley I think) and he wasn’t very big.

Honestly, Murray can probably achieve decent success here. I’ll say what I said regarding McCarthy last year. The offense is mature, and we have all the skill position players in the world. The O-line remains a bit of a question mark, but Murray has plenty to work with, and he can of course, make plays with his legs. He has the table set for him. All he has to do is not muck it up.

Yeah… that was bad. But I think Murray has the talent to make the offense go well enough. It’s his brain I worry about. Not sure he can process everything he needs to quick enough. That’s my only real concern.

He will ad lib it up, Dobbs style, which could be fun to watch.

I wonder if KOC will learn his lesson and just let KM play that way instead of trying to make him a system QB.

I think Kyler just has to play his game at this point. A tiger isn’t going to change its spots as they say. That said, KOC can run a scheme that takes advantage of his strengths.

First, I don’t think he moves the needle in KOC offense and has a history of being lazy.

Second, I don’t think he helps JJ one bit, other than letting McFragile watch another year, and Murray is already talking with other teams about 2027. He’s just looking for a stop gap.

I think taking Murray is a bad thing for JJ.
He will more than likely be the starter, and there’s already a fair amount of chatter that with him we are now a serious contender (who knows).
Now, if instead we took someone like Jimmy G, even Cousins, they might win a QB competition, but won’t be here all that long. JJ can then still learn and be like Love was behind Rogers. Take over later.
But with Murray, if he does well and given his age, JJ is gone.

Cousins is a far better starter in this offense than any other QB out there. He was having an MVP season in it, before his Achilles injury, with 18 TD’s in 8 games. He is the one guy with a fast enough brain, and an accurate enough arm, to actually execute that adaptive route running scheme KOC wants to run.

I don’t think Cousins will be back though, because the Vikings have signaled they are getting their fiscal house in order, and they are looking a few years down the road, more than trying to win the Super Bowl this year.

So you agree he would be better than Murray. For once, we are on the same page here. I doubt he will accept what he’s going to be offered though from any team. If he wants a legit chance at a run, Minnesota makes the most sense for Kirk and Kirk makes the most sense for Minnesota, at the right price anyway. If Kirk simply wants more money, then he can go play for the Raiders.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  bowbunch

Cousins wants to be recognized for being the QB he is, rather than accepting minimal offers for his services, while the team looks for someone else. He knows how good he is. If the right situation isn’t out there, he’ll just sit it out and wait. No reason to uproot his family and start over somewhere else, if the team isn’t committed to him.

Yes, we agree that Cousins is a way better fit for KOC’s offense than Murray. Murray is still a very talented player though. If he starts here, the offense will be pretty good IMO.

Not really. Would just hedge bets, and try to get my cake and eat it too.
First, if Murray comes in and plays well, JJ is done here.
But if someone comes in like Cousins who knows the offense and even if he wins a competition and starts, he will only be here for a year or so. Thus, JJ still has time to further develop and start like next year.

Two thought.
One, and this is from my baseball days, if you are having control problems ( like QB’s with accuracy issues) you learn to correct it by throwing hundreds or more pitches in practice – not in games. JJ has control issues.
Second, and this is something KOC said in 23 following Cousins injury. I paraphrase – we need for Kirk to get back in the QB room (even on crutches) as he’s the only one who really knows what the offense looks like standing 8yards behind the LOC with lineman chasing you and defenders flying all over in the secondary. None of the coaches can do that.
He would be a great mentor for JJ.

Well, there was a lot of “upper level” hype for McCarthy. Harbaugh said he was the best QB he ever coached, and Brady said he was the best Michigan QB ever. Whether they just wanted to give McCarthy a leg up, or they really felt that way I don’t know. I thought Nix was the most NFL ready QB in that draft class. I said that several times leading up to the draft. He is still developing, but he’s shown he can play in the NFL.

I think KOC saw a lot of flaws in McCarthy last year that he knows aren’t going away anytime soon. He would have to become a completely different player. He may develop, he may not. RGIII didn’t. Lots of folks thought he would be a HoF QB. He just fizzled out, and never became anything. One thing is for sure. KOC knows exactly what he has with McCarthy, and he’s going out and getting another QB to replace him. That should tell you all you need to know.

eehhh, Minnesota fans, especially the local ones, are on par with Jets fans. Being somewhere that doesn’t have a local team means I am around multiple fanbases, and the Minnesota fans are quite frankly the worst.

95% of Minnesota fans are just differing levels of Kodiak. He’s the extreme, but the rest are still on the spectrum.

I am around plenty of actual people as well, and there is very little difference when it comes to Minnesotans/Minnesota fans.

I think to program the AI bots on social media that just try to cause problems and complain about everything they just upload recordings of Minnesota fans’ conversations and say, “be like this guy”.

So nice to see a teenagers doing good things, not destroying things and causing mayhem.

18 year old and his 16 year old brother were closing the car wash where they work when a Meth addict threatened them with an ax. Younger brother took the ax away while older brother (who is joining the military and training in MMA) took the perp down and held him for police. And of course the perp has a bunch of ‘priors’.

In Florida teens have a chance to do stuff like this while in Idaho there are not enough meth addicts to go around. #grin

It is interesting how the bad elements are filtering down to smaller and smaller towns.

The druggies are even taking root in rural areas now.

It seems down here in Florida we’re a little less kind to the criminals than many of the bluer states up North.

You routinely see our Sheriffs on TV telling folks that we’re not going to be kind to criminals here. I heard one say something like “if you attack one of our officers, we’ll contact your next of kin and let them know where they can collect your remains”. Not an exact quote there, but close enough. I love that our police forces are adamant about removing the criminal element, and protecting citizens.

I loved the quote from a Southern Sheriff when they asked why they had a shot a ‘Cop Killer’ more than 20 times. He replied ‘Because we didn’t have more bullets’.
Real rural southern justice right there.

Pretty much every other state in the union is ‘less kind to criminals’ than blue states.

In some states the teenagers would have been arrested for assault.

In Commifornia if you defend yourself you are pretty much guaranteed to be arrested in most counties, a few rural counties still have some common sense.

I think the Vikings should play this song at Murray’s press conference.

It also should be the new Skoloholics Official Cover Song.

My wife is pretty short and the first time she met my parents was on a road trip. This song came on and she had never heard it. Initially she got really excited that there was a song for her, and then the song continued and my dad and I got a pretty good laugh. That was almost 15 years ago and we still laugh about it.

At this point, I genuinely believe the Vikings have a spreadsheet that shows Harrison Smith is worth X amount of goodwill and dollars from the total rube fans and just keep bringing him back for PR purposes to mask the fact that they have no real Super Bowl aspirations.

He’s just a Greatest Hits Album.

I can see HS have coaching value, but he is cooked physically.

You may be right, but if they feel that way make him a coach! Hard to burn up one of your active roster position if he is totally cooked. But he played well at the end of last year

He can do spot duty here and there. He is best up around the line and directing things. Even when he was younger, his coverage was suspect and he genuinely sucked at open field tackling.

There were many times where he was directly in front of a receiver YACing to the endzone, and HS just ushered the guy down the field, running in front of him, looking over one shoulder, then the other shoulder. I would get so mad at him.

Like, just stop and try to tackle the guy, Harry! If you miss, you miss…

He’s great near the LOS. Still can blitz from anywhere, great at batting balls and in run support. I’d use him in a Joker role similar to how the Cards used Deone Buchannon or Denver used Brian Dawkins later in their careers.

I never liked it when they gave HS a $60 million contract. It boggled me. I mean, he was cool and all, but $60 million for a safety when we just went into prevent when leading anyway, with an offense that loved field goals more than touchdowns.

It was another PR move, I decided.

I also remember the shock when Bynum started playing. I hadn’t seen a safety move like that in so long, that I didn’t know how to process it.

Could it be that the Doomers are not as correct as they think they are??

This report comes from a story Pelissero put out saying Murray was talking to 3-5 teams via zoom calls, and this could be a situation he could be interested in. He said he spoke with Murray’s agent, and they are thinking about this.
