Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Caleb Banks is surely a bust according to some people because reasons, they’ll continue to piss and moan about it until he gets on the field, or if he has chronic issues they’ll complain forever.

Not much new since the draft, other than Jauan Jennings being in town for a free agent visit. According to Niners Nation, he is overpricing his value.

One of our ‘depth pieces’ is not so good?
We plan to lots and lots of rotations/swaping out to keep our DL fresh??
6-4, 320lb out of Missouri St.

A scapegrace is a reckless, mischievous, or unprincipled person—often described as a rascal, scamp, or ne’er-do-well’

I had never heard the term before, nor had The Teacher. Must be a eastern thing.

Well I have always understood it to mean a mean spirited person, so maybe I was slightly askew here. I read that in a book a long, long time ago (like in the early 70’s). Stuck with me.

ne’er-do-well’ certainly suggests an older term that is out of current main stream use.

I enjoy expanding my vocabulary but I honestly can’t see where I might get an opportunity to use it, other than here now.

I write off the top of my head, but sometimes things just seem to pop into my consciousness. I refer to one of our cats as a rapscallion because she gets up on the dresser and makes off with things. Then we have to search the house to find it. She likes cuff links, golf tees, pens, etc.

I have A set of cufflinks, not worn since my sons wedding some 15 years ago.
I of course own NO ‘golf tees’ which is utterly correct and logical.
Even more correct and logical is the absence of cats.

That playbook has worked for the Dem’s for a long time. Alarmist politics get you noticed as a champion of the crisis du jour. The Dem’s have lived on their reputation of being the Champions of the down-trodden, the underserved, the minorities, the threatened, and of course the disaster that will destroy the planet. They have exaggerated all of those and exploited them for decades. In the end they have never affected any positive change though. Ever. They can only exist as long as people are convinced these existential threats are real and will end them.

Al Gore is a friggin ding bat, this environmental hysteria is dumb and so old… but don’t pretend like the Redumblicans are against taking money. It’s just so hard to take people seriously on either side that can’t just call out a bad idea for being a bad idea no matter who says it. Quit giving stupid ideas and stupid people like Al Gore the excuse or out that it’s because he’s a Dem… Listen, he would be a turn no matter what side he is on. Hmmm… here’s a snippet from the Wilf’s statement:

“We have also engaged respected firm TurnkeyZRG to assist in conducting a wide-ranging search that includes experienced football executives, emerging candidates and individuals with diverse professional backgrounds. Our focus is to identify a decisive leader with a clear vision for team building, strong communication skills and the ability to build alignment across an organization.”

If I was hiring someone to run a multi billion dollar professional football organization, I’d be looking for a guy with a proven background in that regard. Someone with vast experience in the NFL working with other people who were highly successful in that endeavor. Someone who understands NFL contracts, cap management, player evaluation, and organizational structures. Someone who knows how to run things. Someone who has established relationships in the league, and is highly respected. Someone who has the requisite knowledge and understanding to ensure a team doesn’t do stupid things, and falter. Someone with a plan, and defined operational processes to achieve specific football excellence objectives. Someone who has an proven sense of horse trading who can bring in talent, in a reasonable way.

At one point in my career, I ran a large Government organization with a $15B budget and thousands of people stationed all over the world. The first day on the job I took the huge org chart picture on the wall in my office and turned it upside down. Nobody noticed it initially, but one morning a staff member came in and realized it was upside down. She looked at me and said “somebody flipped the org chart upside down”. I looked up at her and told her I had done that. Of course she had to ask why. I told her “because the way it was hanging gave people the wrong impression”. She wasn’t following me, so I explained it to her. I told her an org chart shows one entity at the top, then cascades down with all these other entities under that person. Visually it looks like all those folks are there to support one person. In my mind I was not there to be supported by thousands of people all over the world. Rather, I was there to support them. It was my singular job to do everything possible to make them successful. I never told another person that story, but somehow everyone knew about it within a week.

Honestly, this is about the money to Jennings. Right up front he’s not the #1 WR, so he’s not getting as many balls no matter who is under center. The Vikings are a good organization so coming here is palpable to him. He wants a multi year deal, and the 49ers weren’t giving him one. Honestly I think we could at best, offer a 3 year deal, with a void year or two attached to be able to afford him.

I’m not understanding why McCarthy should be getting a new contract in 2027. You aren’t the first.

He is on his rookie contract and per CBA rules he can’t change a thing.
Then, it’s up to the Vikings to exercise the fifth year option for 2028.

McFragile can’t do anything about it, unless he wants to holdout and get fined.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  DE Viking
29 April 2026 12:34 pm

He can renegotiate his rookie deal after three years per the CBA. He can also refuse to play in 2027 unless he gets a new deal. So if he says I want a new contract next year, the team will be forced to do something.

PA Viking Fan

We will be forced to call his bluff. Lets say, and i hope i am right, that he wins the starter job, stays healthy and has a good year. That means his NFL career is:

Year 1: injured all year
Year 2: injured for 1/3 of the season and very iffy in most games
Year 3: healthy and a decent year.

He would be out of his mind to hold out, because at that point in his career there are more questions than knowns

No longer New Vikings Fan

Striking while the iron is hot as they say, is a strategy agents support. If McCarthy were to have a good year then asking for a new contract right then would make sense. Agents aren’t dumb. They know you have get, while the gettin’s good. It’s business.

29 April 2026 1:27 pm

Well that’s if he didn’t show up. That’s called a holdout. Players now use the hold-in strategy which avoids those fines. They show up, but they don’t participate, and usually nurse some claimed injury. NFL teams under the CBA have some recourse for this behavior, including fines, but generally the better the player, the less likely a team will exercise their rights. Whether there is an ongoing attempt to negotiate a new contract with the player will also help determine how a team will proceed. Teams don’t want the publicity or the inherent disgruntlement of the player affecting them.

Pretending a player cannot hold-in as a ploy to garner a new contract, especially if they are doing so because they have proven they are the QBOTF as it were, is a little short sighted.

He was drafted to be the QBOTF, and lots of people want to be “right” about that IMO. If he has a good year, the “I told you so” crowd is going to be vociferous. The team will have to decide if he’s really that guy or not. Even if Murray starts all year, and McCarthy sits, there will be a group of folks next year saying it’s his time to take the reins.

It has become the modern standard that if your QB is “the guy” that he is signed to a LT deal end of year 3…Mahomes, Herbert, Allen, etc…price will only go up up up after that. As NVF points out, the player and his agent can always come up with ways to force the team’s hand.

This was predicated on Surly mentioning that he thinks McCarthy could be the 2027 starter. That implies a dominant performance in 2026.

Nothing.
If he does not suck this season, I would expect the team to start discussing an extension after or near the end of the 2027 season.

If he still sucks this year, none of this matters and the team is drafting his replacement next year.
