Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day
It’s the weekend, let’s talk smoker recipes! Grilling and/or side dish recipes and desserts are also acceptable.

Minnesota Vikings News:
SI.com asks if the Vikings should give Ty Chandler a bigger role than Alexander Mattison. The correct answer is yes.
From Vikings.com, Justin Jefferson provided an update on his injury status and shared his thoughts about social media.
Here are all of your week 12 scores and highlights so far, courtesy of ESPN.
Thread Guidelines
- Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
- Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
- Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
- All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.
Game Day!
SKOL!
The Vikings would have to activate Jefferson to their 53-man roster by 3 p.m. (CT) today in order for him to play against Chicago tonight. I don’t see it happening. They have to activate him by 29 Nov for him to be eligible to play the rest of the season. I do see that happening.
They already stated he is not playing. Again, late to the show.
Have to say, there were some interesting games yesterday and in the end, kickers had their fair share of drama.
We have one of the most “uneven” kickers in the league. Will our game come down to a Joseph kick tonight?
Are QB OT wins a thing?
Also, when I post Tweets, can you guys see them?
I see this one.
It is pictures I seem to have an issue with.
I can’t seem to click on it.
Funny that Allen is 0-6 in OT.
You’re right.
I can See it, but it isn’t Clickable.
That sucks.
Wonder what happened?
No. Keep doing it
The Bills really are the AFC Vikings.
As in ‘Destined To Fail’?
That feels sad but true.
Both teams 0 – 4 in SBs to boot.
Watching the Bills slowly lose a winnable game for a million different reasons feels much like watching the Vikings do the same
Snake bit is the term that seems most apt to me.
Each has had some good teams but couldn’t finish due to ….reasons.
DRAT!!! I REALLY wanted the Eagles to lose. Sweet sister and I are already exhausted from the emotions of that game, and the Ravens game hasn’t even started yet. She would normally watch that with me, but she said she’ll have to record it and go to bed.
Not your weekend for football it seems Ms Kathy.
It’s been terrible. It will help if the Ravens win tonight and the Vikings win tomorrow night.
Will Josh Allen cock it up?
He ‘only’ as one interception today.
I could see another in his near future.
Me too
Down goes Buffalo.
Josh Allen is an elite QB…
Is there such a thing as an ‘Error Prone Elite QB’?
Potentially…
Bills retake the lead from the Poopeaters.
Up by 3, 1:52 left in the game.
Tied, going to OT.
Kicker made a 59 yarder in the rain to tie it up…
Maybe we could kidnap him?
Never mind, he would have missed that kick if he was wearing a Viking uniform.
What was I thinking??
Even though they only won 5 games, the Gophers are going bowling, apparently because they are smrt.
https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-gophers-wisconsin-hawaii-bowl-eligible-losing-record/600322394/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=sports_alert
I mentioned yesterday the possibility of ‘fill ins’ for bowls.
As I had no idea who would be ‘chosen’ to fill in those slots. I am sorry your Gopher Pain will continue.
Jake Browning, not crapping the bed for Cincinnati.
I liked Browning coming out of college, I guess nobody else really did since he wasn’t drafted…and of course with the Vikes he had Zim the QB whisperer, so that probably didn’t help him out much.
Refs must not like Lawrence, INT should have been negated, but they didn’t throw the flag.
Believe the refs just returned the favor.
Actually, just did it agains. Weak calls.
And another crap call against Houston.
Indeed, refs did throw a few questionable flags in favor of the Jags. They overcompensate, it seems.
Stroud makes plays all over the field.
He’s been really fun to watch. A little jealous the Vikings didn’t get him. Panthers, lol. Maybe Young will eventually earn that #1 pick, who knows.
No No No Kathy, Vikes shouldn’t draft a first round projected QB, they are all busts and we should forever be over paying for Mid tier QBs that are steady but uninspiring. Agreed, CJ is REALLY fun.
92yd Pick Six by Atlanta.
Poor ‘Aints.
Saw a Saints Fan Blog after he attended the Game in Minn.
He asked why they were so hated by Minn Fans.
‘We gave you the Minneapolis Miracle doesn’t that make us even’.
I replied ‘No it doesn’t, we still hate the ‘Aints and always will.’
I don’t hate the Saints like you all do. I understand the reasons. I’m shocked though at how bad Carr has been this season. He was never a super star, but he was at least decent. I liked how he handled the Gruden firing and that awful Ruggs car accident, so was wishing him well.
I didn’t hate Carr, had some Co-workers that were telling me he was better than Teddy and we should have drafted him instead, so I never wished him well.
I never root for anyone who goes to the ‘toilet at the end of the Mississippi’, not even Teddy while he was there.
Yes, that whole Teddy vs. Carr thing was annoying, so I never paid much attention to Carr at the time. I was impressed with how he handled that disaster with the Raiders though. You know me, I like the high character guys, so he kind of won me over with that. Can’t believe how awful he’s been this year, didn’t see that coming.
“I like the high character guys”
Which is why we hate the ‘Aints.
First Bountygate, deliberately trying to injure players.
And the denials afterwards by their QB and others.
The fact that they kept us from a SB is a bitter frosting on a cake of lard.
All of this. I despise that franchise.
Understood.
Good answer, FT*!
Wife made me some of her special chili mac for lunch. She uses rigatoni pasta, ground beef, tomatoes, etc, plus she throws in some Bush’s baked beans (original flavor). Hearty and super tasty. Made me some Texas toast garlic bread to go with it.
Ahhh Chili Mac. The ‘Go To’ for military cooks everywhere.
I loved SoS, aka Shit On a Shingle, aka Creamed Beef on Toast.
The Teacher can’t stand it and so I mostly do without.
SoS on a bed of fried potatoes (or biscuits) with three sunny side up eggs on top is tough to beat!
I preferred mine over a ham/cheese omelet.
Ahh the ‘good ol days’ when I could eat like that and still be healthy.
Me too! Ahhh….youth
Yum!
Gooooooose Morning Skolbronis!
Day after Thanksgiving was an absolute train wreck – there’s a reason I was estranged from my middle sister – because she’s awful.
Thankful to be home, have a full day of football ahead and an opportunity on MNF to right the ship.
Happy Sunday everyone!
SKOL!
Everyone has at least ‘one of those’ in their family.
I learned years ago that I am better off not having some people in my life. They may be ‘family’ but they add nothing good and cause strive and dissent whenever possible.
Cutting the cord was the best way to go for me, your results may vary.
I had cut the cord. Reunion was facilitated by my father, who’s desirous of a relationship with her and ironically he’s the one that told her to leave (She’s been estranged from all of us, including 6 of her 7 children – the oldest being an unwed, soon-to-be-mother of one) She’s chose a life of fast dollars, faster drugs, lowlife men and upscale tastes. She stole my baby sister’s identity and used it to procure pain pills in (no joke) 68 of Nebraska’s 93 counties. She’s stolen vehicles, committed multiple assaults and set my parents home to be robbed twice – the 2nd time my dad was home and held one of them at gunpoint while my mother called 911 – the other two bailed thru the cornfield. This is just the tip of the iceberg. It’d take a post worthy of MTViking to tell the rest of it.
Sounds worse than anything I went thru.
My SIL was my employer (with my brother) after I got out of the Army for 2yrs.
She wrecked the company so that allowed me to bail and end up working at the prison.
Found it funny after she passed how her friends/family posted what a wonderful person she was and how she would be missed.
My thought was ‘ding dong the witch is dead’.
Yikes….
Some people can’t see anything but themselves. At some point you have to set them free and hope for the best.
Oh wow. How awful. You’re right to protect your immediate family from her.
So sorry about how things went with your middle sister. Guess she didn’t mature after all, or maybe bi-polar or some such. I was always the go to problem solver when I was in HR, and everyone knew it. However, there isn’t always a solution to everything, in which case I would tell folks: sorry, I don’t have pixie dust.
I wish her well as she’s my family, and I don’t care to ever see her again. My wife was raised in absolute chaos as a child and Friday was exposure to a world she’s worked very hard to forget. She was the target of my sister’s vitriol at the end and that’s when I immediately stepped in, got her and the mutt loaded in the truck and hit the road. I should’ve left 3 hours prior when all the early warning signs began to rear their heads.
Remember people with drug problems (and people with alcohol problems) are often driven to do really bad things to support their addictions…I have seen it several times in my not so young life. I try to view these broken souls through a lens of mercy and grace, though I am not always successful since their stealing, cheating, and lying are hard to put up with. You have my sympathy, it is a difficult situation to be in.
Being the son of an alcoholic I have little sympathy for ‘self inflicted illnesses’.
Watching functional drunks in the Army and then all the inmates from prison hardened me even more.
Something like 80+% of inmates are there for Drug or Alcohol related crimes.
Sympathy for the Victims, yes.
Good job of getting your wife out of there. Agree, she doesn’t need to be around chaos and vitriol. You can’t make adults do anything. They have to want to change.
Both of controlling sister’s 2nd husband’s kids (so her step kids) were addicts (one was drugs, the other was alcohol). They both died within a year of each other in separate car accidents. At least they didn’t take any innocent people with them. Sister tried to get them help, rehab, etc. Finally had to give up on them. That sister’s two natural kids are both fine and healthy.
I’m going to watch Jax – Hou.
Havent seen Houston at all this year.
In for a treat – Stroud has been impressive. Texans D is better than expected.
Yep
I’ve enjoyed watching Stroud this year. Stuck with red zone right now. Crappy games on here.
BTW… for all the praise our O-line was getting, and PFF scores, Cousins remains the 3rd most knocked down QB in the league after 11 weeks.
I think you are missing one very important stat regarding the praise for the O-line and the Cousins hits.
If you click on the link below, they have a pocket time (pkttime). This is the time a QB has in the pocket before it collapses or a throw. Cousins is 6th.
That’s why the line is ranked well.
Now Cousins is also ranked 6th in pressure percentage.
So our line is giving him the 6th most pocket time, but he is also the 6th most pressured.
So the bad line = Cousins pressure is not correlating in this case.
I would look to some other issues beyond the line play here.
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2023/passing_advanced.htm
After the SF game I am willing to admit that the O-line is not a bad as believed.
I know that play calling that allowed for quicker throws accounted for some of that ‘no sack’ game.
But the line had a big part of that and I believe it turned the Vikings season around.
Lose that game and we are looking at 2-5, winning it and suddenly the rest of the schedule appears much easier.
Any of this oline and Cousins throw time is a snake pit.
For sure line has been better. Going back to even the Eagles game, he may have gotten hit a lot, but protection was good enough that our offense out up big numbers. that’s what counts.
Now, our run blocking is a whole other matter and it is not good.
Pocket time is not the same as time to throw.
I’m ignorant here – seems like splitting hairs to me.
To me, do you have enough time to execute the play.
Whichever stat you use, if you are running a deep drag to JJ and it takes 3.5 seconds, that’s what you need.
On the other hand, a quick slant – 1.9 seconds – that’s what you need.
Our pass blocking seems good enough to me.
The whole point of pocket time is to account for time in a clean pocket. Its not perfect.
But it explains why Kirk can get hit and the O line can get good marks.
That was my point. The O-line is giving Kirk longer than most O-line with a clean pocket to get the play off. Either play design or WRs not getting open etc. is playing into Kirk getting hit.
The line is doing their part.
Asking them to block longer than other lines and then complaining about how the O-line sucks is not really fair IMO.
That wa my point. I was getting tired of people complaining about the line and using QB hits, pressures, sacks as proof that the line sucks.
They don’t.
Well. OK. I thought things have been good WRT passing game this year.
Now, here’s something that I think helped. As you know, there’s a thing called “feed the stud in the NFL” and I think both KOC in his play calling and kirk trying to get the ball to JJ would do this.
After the adjustment to being without JJ, like SF and GB, passing game seemed quicker and pretty damn effective.
Now, why is our run blocking so poor?
I’ve seen quite a bit of replays on Twitter with what is wrong with our run game.
The running game issues are many.
Overall they block well against 7 man fronts with nothing fancy going on.
Run blitzes, 8 man fronts and stunts seem to get through a lot more than they should.
Also some is on the RBs. Mattison has made it through a couple of 8 man fronts with only one man between him and a TD. He has yet to win that match up.
Luke Braun was showing quite a few times where there were cut back lanes that our RBs completely missed.
Lots of problems with the run game.
I haven’t watched all that many replays. But from the eyeball test they allow too much penetration at or near the point of attack. This cassues the back to adjust, added time, allowing the defense to react.
Vision be backs is also another thing.
i was just at the gym, and watched some run footage off Twitter again.
A lot of guys come free like #20 below.
twitter.com/BrandonThornNFL/status/1724487011124285697?s=20

Non-broken link
Always take the running back with vision, even if a tick slower.
Time to throw is a BS stat. Cousins runs a lot of play action passes that extend the “time to throw” artificially. Also, Cousins is often forced to hold the ball on long developing route concepts which I have criticized KOC for running at Cousins expense. When you’re the most knocked down QB in the league, you’re hanging in there to the last possible millisecond to get the ball out. That is really Cousins stock in trade. Hanging in a collapsing pocket and delivering the ball.
Just watch the games and see how often Cousins is hit as he throws the ball.
‘Just watch the games and see how often Cousins is hit as he throws the ball’
The eye test??
NFL offenses are very complicated, watching the QB School and other such YouTube ‘experts’ have enlightened me to how ignorant I am.
I subscribe to the ‘If it is stupid and it works than it is not stupid’ school of thought I learned in the Army.
‘Figures do not lie but liars figure’ and ‘Stats will tell you whatever you want if you torture them enough’ both are part of the equation as well.
This is all true…
When you watch the games, notice how packed and tight our pocket is and how little room the QB has to operate. Then watch the opposing QB and note how much space he has. Tells you all you need to know.
I have seen way to much of KC hanging in and taking a shot while just getting the pass off.
I understand that KOCs scheme requires more time and that Ds try to key in on ‘hot routes’ to allow the rush to get home.
When a play works it is a beautiful thing, when it doesn’t their is plenty of blame to go around. QB/Coach/line/RBs/receivers/and The Defense all have a say in the outcome. Lots of ‘failure points’.
I am at the point where I seldom believe the ‘simple answers’ are sufficient.
Simple sometimes works though.
Take the Cowboys/Commanders game. DAK looked great and Howell not so much. Yet, put Howell on the Cowboys and DAK on the Commanders, think resultsof the game would be able the same, but which QB played well would drastically change.
Correct.
The QB is part of the equation but not the ‘simple answer’.
One terrible piece can change the whole. For example One O Lineman getting beat by a better player or blitz can make the entire O look bad.
Yep. Michigan/Ohio State. Last Ohio State play, guard whiffs on block, QB can’t step into throw, ball is short and intercepted.
Everybody needs to do their job.
So many moving pieces.
Military operations are similar. Coordinations galore, staff has to be on the ball to make sure fuel points are in place and everyone knows it for example.
This stat is not the same as time to throw.
Its POCKET TIME.
The line keeps the pocket clean for the 6th most amount of time in the league.
That’s why they are ranked well.
Dobbs is getting his 4th start with the Vikings on Monday night. There is no way he “owns” the offense yet. He’ll just be getting to the point of knowing it sorta well in the playoffs. He’s still going to rely on his legs more than his arm at times to make plays, like a rookie. Favre said early in his career that people thought he was a running QB. He said “I ran because I didn’t know what I was doing”.
KOC wants to run his adaptive passing offense (where the receivers read the defense and adapt their routes to it) but with Dobbs in there, he can’t do that too much. Receivers can run choice routes, because they are are a norm in the NFL, and Dobbs should be able to read those out. But the rest of it, takes a lot of time on task to master.
Thus my expectation is we’ll see Josh running a lot through the end of the season.
A question out of ignorance – what’s the difference between “receivers read the defense and adapt their routes” and receivers “can run choice routes’?
Just trying to understand.
A choice route is run based on the leverage of the defender (inside or outside). TE’s run a lot of choice routes because they are being defended by safeties and linebackers. They take off and run an in route or an out route based on the defenders alignment.
The altering of a route by the WR’s can be something like instead of running a 9 route (Go) he cuts it short because there’s a safety over the top and instead runs a 9 stop route to isolate himself between the CB and the safety.
Thanks – very informative.
Agree, but I sure would enjoy a win Monday night after Louisville losing to that blue team down the road, UGH.
At least they have a chance to take out FSU in the ACC title game.
That would definitely help.
Good morning, SKOL!
FTP!!
Well the Packers did us a favor beating the Lions. We control our own destiny now to win the Division. We’re still in it to win it.
Very odd Sunday. Pretty much don’t care about any of the games today. My wife is a Ravens fan so she’ll be watching that game, but other than that, pretty dull line-up.
Given the rivalry, Steelers/Bengals should be interesting – but probable old school football. Now, can’t imagine watching Pats/Giants. Atleast the Jets aren’t in a primetime game.
Bengals without Burrow aren’t really a contender anymore. Gotta score points to win games. Jake Browning is gonna get a chance today, but I think the Steelers defense will find a way to keep points off the board.
Well, the Steelers offense is nothing to write home about. Not sure, but believe it’s worst in the league, certainly close to it.
Yeah, they just fired their OC…
Buffalo taking out Poop Eaters would be nice of course.
NO taking a L is aways welcome.
Is Denver good enough to take out Detroit for us in a few weeks?
No ‘Must Watch TV’ but somethings to keep an eye on.
I do think the Buffalo vs the Eagles game has some interest. Kinda want the Bills to lose so Diggs can get all upset again, but on the other hand I hate the Eagles. What a conundrum!
Buffalo certainly has more to lose, they are currently on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.
Same. We’ll be watching the Ravens game too. Not that interested in Bengals without Burrow. So many starters injured takes the fun out of those games.
Yep. Burrow is a true talent, and fundamental reason the Bengals have been competitive. He was just snakebit with injuries this year.
Since there were no major upsets in college football over the weekend, this should be the top four playoff spots….
1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. Washington
4. Florida St
FSU got hosed last week by losing their starting QB but still crushed their opponent.
The next four:
Ohio st
Oregon
Texas
Alabama
I feel better now.
None of the 8 are guaranteed to be in the playoff and none of them are ruled out of them either.
Next week it is:
Georgia vs Alabama
Michigan vs Iowa
Washington vs Oregon
Florida St vs Louisville
Ohio St vs No One
Texas vs Oklahoma St.
Well, no one team in particular is guaranteed to be in the playoff, but all 4 are coming from the eight I listed.
Yes two loss teams have been basically eliminated at this point.
Not sure Alabama gets in even if they beat Georgia.
They sure had a horseshoe yesterday!
It depends on who else loses.
Ohio St won’t play next week so they need lots of help.
We could possibly see 8 One Loss Teams afterwards in fact.
That would make things interesting.
The Gophers suck.
But if they win this game they will be ‘bowl eligible’ so there must be other teams that suck even worse.
Not that there was really much actual chance of them winning that game.
Agree.
At least the season is over. They are not “bowl eligible” even with the 50 + bowl games.
I had heard that there were more ‘bowl slots’ then there were Bowl Eligible teams.
If that is true they will have to stick some ‘less eligible’ teams into them.
Tired of the goofers
Justin Jefferson, deleted his social media accounts this week. Apparently the butt of severe criticism from “fans”.
He told reporters on Friday, “Y’all have no idea. It’s honestly crazy, the amount of people that really criticize you and talk very, very bad about you, calling you different names. You’re just trying to be healthy and trying to be your best on the field.”
Part of the new sports reality.
Social Media is evil IMHO.
I refuse to get involved in/with it. My Daughter tries to talk me into BookFace but I tell her The Teacher is on it so anything you will post I will hear about. Don’t need to be soiling my own hands with that stuff.
I saw several officers at the Prison fired over posting stuff, Swore off of it then and have never regretted it.
Yeah, you see the absolute worst of “humanity” on social media and sports blogs… grin.
People live in an echo chamber by choice these days.
I read Liberal articles on-line and you can tell within a paragraph what the bias of the author is.
Saw a Senate Hearing where they were confirming judges, one nominee could only list ‘3 prior cases they oversaw’ and one was a traffic court case. All the Democrats voted to confirm them because that is what they were told to do. Now a Federal Judge with no practical experience but all the right social views.
This is in relation to idiots on insta ragging on him for not playing and affecting their fantasy teams. He stated himself in a previous tweet. Stop trying to be a sports reporter.
Khyiris Tonga was added to the injury report today with a knee issue and is questionable for the game Monday. Justin Jefferson was limited again in practice today and is also questionable. Akaleb Evans was a full participant in practice but is listed as questionable for the game.
Good football game – Michigan beats Ohio State 30-24. Turnovers again decide game. Two really good teams though.
Over on the Vikings Age, they did a ranking of all 27 QBs that have started for the Vikings since 1990. Ponder was not in the top 10 nor the bottom 10….I think they had him at 14.
They had Culpepper #1 and Cousins #2, I think I would switch those around, but otherwise I thought their list was pretty good.
Well folks can compare them statistically here:
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/min/career-passing.htm
Cousins has over 3K more yards and 36 more TD’s than Culpepper in just 7 more games.
Yeah, thanks for the link, that is how I see it as well.
Culpepper had Moss and Carter.
Cousins had JJ and recently Addison.
Michigan/Ohio St about to start, should be interesting.
Kathy good luck with the Cardinals against the Wildcats.
Down goes Ohio St.
And sorry Kathy.
I’m devastated to lose to that horrible blue team and their horrible fans. It’s like losing to the Packers. I had said previously that Brohm’s first season had wildly exceeded my expectations, but I would trade several of those other wins for a win in this game. Hopefully I can get back to that space eventually. You have to understand I lived in Lexington for 14 years and over half my family are UK fans. UK fans (not my family) post death threats to players and pics of Kevin Ware’s bone: “I hope this happens to you.” UGH!!!
My Dad was from Kentucky, Berea Area. In fact his Moms address was actually in ‘Paint Lick, Kentucky.
Can’t get any more ‘down home’ than that.
I’m sure he’s a UK fan from that area, but if he raised a son like you, I’m also sure he’s a decent person. Not all UK fans are horrible, but there’s a lot of them.
My dad wasn’t any kind of sports fan.
I assume some Kentucky residents are Louisville Fans,
Louisville is in Kentucky after all.
I have chosen my pronoun. It is One. Note that it is capitalized. I.e., One has spoken. Or, I am One.
Guess that’s better than “Two”…
The fact that we are making fun of this shows that there is a serious mental health issue going on in our country, especially amongst elected officials.
You aren’t wrong.
Good morning One!
That was improper useage
VP works hard in the salt mines all week, I hope One has a great weekend!
Good correction NoDak.

6 years for murder?
Yeah, that case has had more twists than a neurotic pretzel. If I was the victim’s family, I might have to send that guy a beaver for Christmas to chew his legs off.
a thought on pies.
The other day, in response to Bow, I said gotta have pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving.
GF responded later didn’t like pumpkin so much.
In general I agree. Would never go to a diner and order pumpkin pie most of the year.
but at Thanksgiving, it just seems right, especially with freshly made whip cream.
I’m pretty much the same. Gotta be in the mood for pumpkin pie. I love pecan pie and cherry pie pretty much any time though.
I can see that.
Good morning. Nice to see folks up and moving today. I’ve been watching lots of golfers coming by, even though it’s cool here. High 50’s to start the day, warmed up to 60 now.
Saw three gals with push carts come up and all of them hit nice shots over the lake to the green. They were jabbering away as they walked by, and waved to me. I raised my coffee cup to them and said “nice shots!”
The sun was coming up over the trees behind them, and it was a beautiful start to the day.
Yea, been cool here ever since Ben came down. WFH?
Actually, been nice having cooler weather over the holiday.
Yes it has, and our air conditioner motor went out the day before Thanksgiving, so we’re lucky it’s cool. Part isn’t available till Monday to fix it.
Think it’s supposed to be cool all next week.
