well this was KOC’s entire strategy…light camp and offseason save the body for the pounding in season. We’ll see how it works out for cotton. If we see guys getting hurt left and right throughout the game we’ll know they weren’t “contact ready”.

Lamar is a really good guy. He won’t let the contract thing affect his game or relationship with his team mates. I do think he should get an agent and take the deal. The Watson contract is an outlier.

i read the LOTR books and the Hobbit.
Loved the LOTR movies, hated the Hobbit.

Is this new series based on more book by Tolkien? if so, i highly doubt it is portrayed as the books. They definitely seem to be trying to push a strong female leaders, i’m not against it, if it seems to fit. some doesn’t seem to fit and feels very forced. others meh, it’s decent.

i have enjoyed seeing and hearing names of the worlds and regions that are long wasted away in LOTR, but in their glory in Rings of Power. And it’s fun to see characters in Rings of Power that we know or have heard about in LOTR.

it’s enjoyable IMO.

The one exception is the Reacher TV series on Amazon. Based on one book. That show was a lot better than the book.

MREs have heat tabs that require no stove. I can still get them at the Commissary (retirees are allowed in).
We used to take a handful camping for the first night, after driving, unloading, setting up, not cooking was a good thing. Family and I enjoyed them and they have some new, interesting options (even Vegan/Kosher options).
Don’t know the other options as we alway have some MREs on hand for when the power goes out, living in Granola State as we do (fruits/nuts/flakes).

Yeah these ones have the heater like an MRE. There are some of the Mountain House and Peak meals that are really good. Even when we are in the camper, especially in archery season, we just eat those. It’s much easier to just boil some water than have to cook something and clean up after it.

Adrenaline
Reply to  bowbunch
7 September 2022 1:57 pm

Yup, in the old skool days had to carry a camp cook kit out backpacking then take an hour finding a way to clean the goobers off.

So much easier to just MRE or water-in-a-bag it with a small backpacking stove.

I stocked up on WISE freeze-dried meals a while back, which taste pretty good. Just don’t look at the ingredients because there are fewer chemicals at a Texas refinery than in a bag of this stuff.

MT Viking

I’ve probably told this story before on here or the DN…the MREs I grew up with were not these kind mentioned with the heat tabs, you tossed them in a pot of boiling water. The two varieties were either a Canadianized version of the British MREs with French instructions added. FTMP they were vile, they had some hideous egg dish and a few other nasty things like Salisbury steak; however, you would not starve relying on them.

The other variety were the American ones. A couple of companies of US Army came to town (Wainwright) to use the exercise area and upon completion of their exercises buried all the leftover MREs (rather than ship them back to the States). The Canadian regulars promptly dug up the buried MREs and distributed them amongst themselves. I have to say there wasn’t a bad meal in the lot. The main course was yummy, they had nice sides and desserts, etc.

TL;DR Lucky Americans

I did not care for MRE. never had the store bought things.
C rations back in the day as well (not me, I did not serve. My father was in the Marines, and there were some times when C rations and oatmeal was all that was in the pantry)

I would get a stove to boil water. Or even a candle lantern.

Come one, come all!! Get your electric car here!!!

As I’ve mentioned, I don’t care either way if you have an electric car or not, but the current leaders of our great nation are just doing politics instead of facing reality.

I clipped this from a Yahoo article.

Climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act put the U.S. back on track toward significant emissions reductions, potentially reducing greenhouse gas output by 40% of 2005 levels.
But one miner warned that when it comes to the transportation sector, domestic resources for lithium, the most critical mineral used for electric vehicle production, may not be sufficient enough to meet some of the most ambitious targets. The Biden administration, for instance, aims to slash the sale of gas-powered vehicles to 50% of all new purchases by 2030.
“Yes, we’ll [eventually] have enough, but not by that time,” Keith Phillips, CEO of Piedmont Lithium (PLL), said in an interview with Yahoo Finance Live (video above). “There’s going to be a real crunch to get the material. We don’t have enough in the world to turn that much [lithium] production in the world by 2035.”

Northwoods
Reply to  VikingPhilip
7 September 2022 1:02 pm

Hence all the renewed interest in space exploration.

Step 1 – discover a planet made entirely of lithium.
Step 2 – build a rocketship that can travel there and back with huge lithium payloads
Step 3 – reap the rewards.

It’s rather simple if you think about it.

They want no industrial caused haze in wilderness areas within like 40 years. If you were to go to 0 from current levels tomorrow, the difference would literally not be noticeable to the human eye (at least here and the “affected” wilderness areas). For Billings area wilderness areas they considered the haze impact from NOx in North Dakota. A comment one industry made in western Montana pointed out that the National Park Service has a water treatment (I think) facility in Glacier and that should be considered. After going at and nit picking every affected facility in Montana, the NPS replied to that comment and said “we don’t think we have any impact so you shouldn’t bring it up again.” Basically, we are part of the fed so F off.

They need to start logging more. It doesn’t have to be clear cutting even. One of the biggest issues with the increased size and intensity of fires now is that for the last 100 years they have managed wildfires with a total suppression objective. This has allowed undergrowth to get out of control. The forests and prairies need fire. Lodgepole will not reseed without fire. Sage grouse need a habitat mosaic (different ages of sage brush that they don’t get with all old growth sage). Fire should be a tool but it is not possible anymore with the overgrown forests. Without controlled logging, fires will continue to get worse and worse “climate change” be damned. Do you notice a difference in the intensity of your campfire between 60 and 70 degrees? No, so why does less than 1 degree supposedly make such a difference? I bet if you put a bunch of dry paper in the fire you’ll notice a difference though.

All coal plants in the US have advanced scrubbing systems on their silos. All that comes out of those plants is water vapor. Period. There’s also 1000 sensors in those scrubbers that warn the plant if anything close to toxic is leaving the plant via silo. Anyone who says coal in the US is polluting anything is mentally deficient. Now…coal plants in other, shittier parts of the world, thats another story.

Coincidentally, I also briefly considered taking a job in South Bend as a lab tech at the same time. It was the newness of our long distance relationship that gave me pause, as I thought she would think I was moving closer just to be a little too clingy. The consideration of the move actually preceded her as I was looking to establish residency in a state with at least one medical school. Ultimately I declined the offered job mainly because it was further from my “home” in Alberta but secondarily because I thought our blossoming relationship would wither on the vine…which it did anyhow about a month later.

Met my wife about eight months later, at which point I was considering a move to Cali for the same reason. Funny how life works out.

Interestingly enough, my pay per se has not changed since I started working in 2010. To qualify that, I should mention I am paid purely on production in that I receive a flat fee per volume of studies I read or perform. My analogy is that in the beginning I was paid to fold all of the clothes in the laundry basket, I folded y and I made x. Later, I was asked to fold socks and only socks and because I was good at folding socks and never had to figure out how to fold shirts (except on evenings and weekends), I folded 2y and made 2x. Then it became 3y and 3x. Complicating that was the way we pooled everything, such that half of 3x got put into a pool that was evenly distributed. Essentially my increasing production meant little change in compensation to myself. Couple that with the fact that after ten years of that the actual money you make starts to be less important than staying sane, not burning out, spending time with family.

As a result, I am now back to folding the whole laundry basket, and no longer pool and split resources. However, I am still a victim of my own success as people “love” my customer service and reads, which leads to more referrals and studies, etc…

I’m about ready to cut back on the number of sites I read for, stick to the eastern end of the state – Glendive, Miles City, Scobey, Plentywood, Ekalaka, Terry, Circle, Colstrip. That will easily cover my base salary with a little reconciliation payment every quarter.

I love playing the passive aggressive game with family.

Got the whole family dynamic putting the fun in dysfunctional. Stepson not getting along with his dad, us, sister, etc…Stepson preg tested cows last weekend and instead of doing it in a batch with his dad’s (my wife’s ex) cows and using his dad’s beautiful corrals had to do a scabbed together version. Oh well.

Before either stepson or dad can run cows in our near pastures, we need to redo fencing around the new shop, extending out to the new cattle guard. Now you would think this would be a relatively easy task for multigeneration ranchers with fencing up the wazzoo covering multiple sections. Oh no. Stepson says I’m not asking dad for help. Meanwhile, I gave a nice Dewalt impact driver and drill to 13 yo grandson and told grandson and granddad (stepson’s dad) that he could work it off helping fence out the cows, which both were excited about (grandson spent much of the summer fixing fence with him, really enjoyed it). Ex is like if son wants it done he needs to ask me, I’m like FFS I can’t fence myself and it’s for both of your benefits vis a vis cattle. Finally talked him off the ledge, he acknowledged he has 30 grand of fencing equipment for the skid steer and enjoys teaching the grandson, etc.

Stepson came down last night and we staked out the new fence line. We need three more “corner” posts to anchor the fence lines, which will get driven into the soil by the pole driving attachment, plus about 25 new steel posts, 2 rolls of barbed wire. The skinny metal posts and the wire are easy, but the big two inch pipe that makes the anchor posts is above my paygrade. He tells my wife and I we need to let his dad know the date we are doing it and that we need three posts from his pile of steel pipe.

My wife called today and he agreed to supply the posts, but said we need to talk to stepson and come down and tell him how long they need to be cut and help cut them. I’m okay with helping cut the posts (they are about 200 pounds uncut) but really, you don’t know how long they need to be? There’s only approximately 200 such posts scattered around the ranches.

Good times.

Reply to  MT Viking

I’m just going to assume you need the posts long and tall enough to keep family out.

That’s what I try to do since my family is nothing but drama with my 4 siblings.

It’s like Yellowstone around here but with more vitriol and backstabbing.

I couldn’t pass up the easy lob over the plate.

Yeah, my stepson is an enigma. I’m still annoyed that his girlfriend is basically alienating his kids…and he is letting this happen. The first weekend my wife and I had to ourselves after we started dating (dad always had something going on that meant he couldn’t take them for his every other weekend stint) the stepdaughter called sobbing because he had come home drunk and bleeding etc etc stepkids came back home to mom’s place. I feel very strongly that the kids come first and the exes need to get along. A girlfriend coming in and deciding after five years that we are all supposed to pretend the grandkids don’t have a mother? Fuck that.

One of my sisters had a kid who was trouble from day one.

My sister, being the micro-managing control freak always saying something judgemental ultimately drove him away at a young age.

He ended up getting married, having a kid, the wife was a boozer and druggie even through the pregnancy, kid has some definite cognitive issues, my nephew commits suicide after another prison stint, my sister spends most of her husbands retirement money to get full custody, and now pretends the kid never had a biological mother.

The best week I ever had in a pickem league was the first week, when I had no idea what the confidence points were and just left them in their preordained order. I slaughtered my opponents that week. Once I started monkeying with the points I never rose to such exalted levels again.

Thoughts on tomorrow’s game. I am trying a “Loser Pool” this year. It is like the survival pool we are doing on Yahoo but you have to pick losers. It will be interesting to see if Brady considers him his new Gronk Junior, since he only pulled in 1 TD each of the last 2 seasons with other teams.

But if I had to pick just one cereal to eat every day, it would be raisin bran, followed by Captain Crunch.

It depends on what age I am. For now, low carb is the way, so no cereal. Eggs are my cereal.

non child Surly says Raisin Bran is a very strong choice.

Child Surly wants Cocoa Pebbles, Frankenberry, Quisp and Quake and captain crunch and Frosted Flakes on a steady rotation. With Pop tarts in the mix.

Older Surly wants Oatmeal.

I can’t eat any of the sweet cereals. I would love to but sugar is my downfall and my wife, who wants me around for a long time, only purchases healthy cereal for me. Of the choices I have I probably like raisin bran the most.

I pretty much eat cereal every morning. When I was a bachelor, I had a large rotation of the kiddo cereals in my cupboard.

I think the older generation went overboard on wins, so guys with mediocre stats like Terry Bradshaw got MVP’s, while the younger generation which grew up in fantasy goes overboard on stats, so guys like Aaron Rodgers and his completion rate gets MVP.

Viking MVP’s (AP voting):

Alan Page 1971
Fran Tarkenton 1975, almost 50 years ago, we’ve sucked since
