Beware the Ides of September. Happy Thorsday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us as we discuss the latest Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings updates, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the open thread, which is……open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here.

Whether you’re a bdoomer, a homer, or anywhere in between, we’re glad you’re on board with us here, because I have a feeling that this is going to be a FUN season for Vikings football. I really like the direction this team is heading in right now. It isn’t just because of one game, although that was a great game, but it just feels like they’ve finally got this franchise stabilized and moving in the right direction. Am I predicting anything? Nah, but I won’t be surprised if this team makes some noise later into January, and from there…………. Hell, let’s see how we do against the Eagles first. SKOL!!!!

Just curious how the insurrection was going to work? Can anyone explain it to me? Did they think Buffalo man (who is mnetally ill but is getting 4 years in Federal prison- good use of funds and he did nothing violent, hmm) would announce he is President and then they just all gave up? How does that work?

What will be Philadelphia’s approach to covering Justin Jefferson and Co? And will Minnesota have a countermove if needed.

If you haven’t watched the Kevin O’Connell Film Session this week, make sure to check it out.

O’Connell illustrates how everyone on the Vikings worked together to get Jefferson about 20 yards of space on his 36-yard touchdown reception.

K.J. Osborn ran a clear out route deep, and Adam Thielen set a legal moving pick with his route. Irv Smith, Jr., occupied rookie linebacker Quay Walker with an underneath route to increase the size of the throwing window.

Cousins felt pressure from his blindside and delivered the football in rhythm to allow Jefferson to catch it in stride.

Jefferson’s nine-catch, 184-yard, two-score game is the kind that might prompt increased emphasis on covering him.

If Philadelphia is able to cover Jefferson better than the Packers did, how will the Vikings react?

Thielen? Cook? TE du jour?

Long-term implications?

Repeat after me: “It’s way too early to think about playoff ramifications.”

But, you counter, this game is a contest between the Vikings, who missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record last season, and the Eagles. Philadelphia finished 9-8 last season, but the Eagles would have lost a tiebreaker to Minnesota.

So, the results of this one could have an increased magnitude at the end of the season.

Many have been high on the Eagles returning to the postseason; the Vikings will be considered underdogs by most for a second consecutive week.

It will be interesting to see how each team handles a taste of success from last week and moves on to try to stack another in the win column.

Depends on when it is, early in the game you just take the points, if Denver had simply kicked two chipshot FGs on MNF they’d be 1-0.

sure, so long as the different scoring doesn’t affect the other team’s play-calling, etc.

I do hear what you’re saying, but remember when the Vikings lost to the Colts 21-18? I believe it was 18-0 in the Vikings’ favor at one point (6 field goals)

Are they ready for some prime-time football?

The Vikings haven’t had the best showing in prime-time games in recent years.

Aside from wins at Soldier Field on Monday Night Football in 2020 and 2021, the previous Vikings MNF victory was Oct. 6, 2008, at New Orleans.

Minnesota hasn’t won on a Sunday night since 2019 at Dallas, but the Vikings did

record a victory at Philadelphia on a Tuesday night in 2010 after a blizzard delayed a Sunday Night Football game for two days.

Cousins has drawn some ire when prime-time performances haven’t matched his Sunday afternoon showings, but this is another opportunity for this team to move past prior narratives and build on the momentum from Sunday’s crisp game.

Matchup to watch: Vikings offensive line vs. Eagles defensive line

The Vikings offensive line helped Minnesota average 4.5 yards per carry and protected to allow Kirk Cousins to pass for 277 yards and two scores while taking just one sack.

The group is set to face a strong challenge across the line this week.

Beyond the difficulties of it being hard to hear in road venues, Philadelphia is stacked with talent on its defensive line. All four starters have at least one Pro Bowl to their credit, and the players have combined for 162 sacks over the course of their career.

Brandon Graham (59.5 sacks since 2010) sets one edge, and Josh Sweat (17.5 since 2018) mans the other. Fletcher Cox (58.5 since 2012) is a six-time Pro Bowler who has wrecked games from the 3-technique position for years. Javon Hargrave joined the Eagles in 2020. He has 26.5 career sacks.

Minnesota handled a strong group from Green Bay last week and will need to do the same this week.

Wow, Fletcher Cox is still there?

CEOTTK, ROTLA, Flash Gordon and Stargate were all novelizations of the movies, yes.

The others were books first, I believe. Was surprised to find The Beast Within. I’ve heard it is fairly trashy, though. I’m only out a $1 if I don’t like it.

Ghost Story was only a quarter, so I got that, even though I’m not sure I’ve ever been able to make it through a Peter Straub book. Maybe Koko.

It’s weird that part of my memory is dedicated to this movie. But it was/is terrible. Regardless of what I remember as a kid. He’s sitting there in a walker, but surrounded by cool Viking weapons. Lost most of his gut, so not sure if he’s healthier or not.

He wanted to talk basic Viking knowledge, like the fact that Viking helmets didn’t have horns and stuff.

I mentioned “the other Vikings” and he just about wanted to get up and fight me, lol

That was many moons ago so maybe I got that all mixed around.

I hardly ever buy new release games, but this winter I’m looking at Dead Space Remake, Callisto Protocol and System Shock.

And I just got the Cowabunga Collection.

Yet, when I actually play, I often still go to Fallout 4. I play survival mode permadeath, and that never gets boring to me, just frustrating when I die.

It is an amazing game. I still remember first hearing about it and then eventually getting it. Great experience to play through. I’ve never topped experiencing some of those original NES games in video gaming.

Dead Space is basically Resident Evil 4 mechanics in space but more immersive, with a cool limb-cutting feature rather than simply blasting enemies.

No HUD either. Weapon and health display on character.

Great horror survival game.

Dead Space 2 on hardcore difficulty was the most stressful, yet exciting time I ever had playing a video game. Really had to be on my toes to complete it. I wanted to get the prize for it, which was a foam finger gun, and the character would go “pew! pew!” when he shot it…

Point is, I don’t see how the OT and NT are incompatible. When progressive revelation occurs, some accept the new revelation, some don’t. Those groups contradict each other, sure, but it the former group is correct, then the two revelations are reconciliatory.

There are many contradictory points made things like the old testament fire and brimstone eye for an eye stuff in the OT that Jesus was like, “nah” lol. I don’t know man, Jews have over 600 Mitzvah’s/commandments. Christians have 10 lol. It’s a cute saying but it still doesn’t negate the fact that there is much contradiction in that infallible book. I always, even when I was little and first learned humans are flawed and God didn’t write the Bible but rather told man what to write… I was like OK, so this is a warning that this book was written by people who make mistakes, get things wrong etc…

5) The Eagles kick/punt coverage units vs. the Vikings’ returners

The Vikings’ punt returner Week 1 was Jalen Reagor. In case you had forgotten, when Reagor was the Eagles’ punt returner, actually fielding punts could be a bit of an adventure. The Eagles’ gunners have to be alert for muffed punts, and Arryn Siposs must be sure to make Reagor catch his punts. (Don’t kick it out of bounds.)

On kickoffs, however, Jake Elliott should be looking for touchbacks. You do not want to kick off to Kene Nwangwu, who had 2 return TDs on 18 kick returns in 2021. You can watch those here and here. He’s fast.

Sounds like they want to kick it to Reagor and hope for mistakes – could be a good opportunity for Jalen to get some revenge? Or maybe he’ll muff one. They’re afraid of Nwangwu, though.

I’d say this article had some pretty good observations overall. The author (Jimmy Kempski) seems to know the Vikings reasonably well – the only notable mistake was assuming Bradbury > Ingram.

peterplaysbass
Reply to  Mick

that’d be a great way to start. if he drops it and we still win, that’ll be a hilarious talking point against the puker fans saying the game would’ve been totally different if Watson caught it.

peterplaysbass
15 September 2022 7:56 am

Oh, and the Vikings also have a deadly duo at running back in Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, who combined for 126 yards on 28 carries against a very good Packers defense Week 1. Meanwhile, PFF had the Eagles down for 15 missed tackles in Week, most in the NFL.

Seems like running through the B gap (or further outside) for Cook could slow that interior pass rush – and perhaps hammering Mattison up the middle a few times will weaken the DTs’ resolve…?

peterplaysbass
15 September 2022 7:53 am

the Vikings ran slow-developing routes down the field against Green Bay, and the Vikings’ O-line protected well. On average, Kirk Cousins took 2.96 seconds from snap to throw, which was the eighth-slowest time in the NFL Week 1. If the Vikings are going to run Jefferson on crossers 20 yards down the field, the Eagles’ line is going to have to get to Cousins.

-phillyvoice

Sure, these are all good observations, but LOL at this:

The player the Eagles should be looking to expose is the rookie RG, Ingram, who many felt was a bit over-drafted by Minnesota.

Ha! They don’t know how well Ingram did in the preseason and at camp. They see a couple of struggles in week 1 and assume he’s the weak point. I wonder if the Eagles coaches are similarly fooled.

We Vikings fans know that Bradbury is the weak link here.

peterplaysbass
15 September 2022 7:50 am

Monday night will be the first time the Eagles will have to face Jefferson since that draft blunder, and it’ll be interesting to see what the plan is to try to slow him down. Darius Slay is the obvious candidate, but as Gannon mentioned, it’s hard to game plan for receivers that line up everywhere, particularly when trying to have a corner follow the best receiver without tipping coverages.

-phillyvoice(dot)com

Darius Slay? He was targeted 9 times in week 1 and allowed 3 catches. PFF score: 73.6

Other members of the secondary don’t score as highly. I’m not too worried about Slay locking down JJ, but even if he’s locking down whoever his assignment is play-to-play, there’s enough skill players to spread the ball around … IF the oline can do a decent job against the Eagles dline. That’s a big if.

95% of teachers are losers who took an easy path and they think they deserve 500K a year? Try teaching sometime, go substitute, see how easy it is. Then put on top of it having to create the lessons, and all the other things that go along with it. It’s far from easy. You’ve lost more of your metal faculties than Biden! (this is me assuming you had some at some point) (Also I haven’t been following what’s happening in Minnesota, I do know their teacher’s union is absolutely ridiculous and holds far too much power)

Teachers are glorified daycare. The unions have set it up to protect bad teachers like all unions do with bad employees at the expense of good ones. New teachers are at an extreme disadvantage and overall there’s this trend that more are bringing stuff into the clasroom
That doesn’t need to be there than needs to be.

as with any group… painting with a large brush isn’t right, but far too much “education” money is spent on admin and not the people in the trenches… students and teachers.

As far as unions go, they ARE NOT inherently a bad thing. But with much of life it’s about balance. Maybe this has changed but a teaching buddy of mine in Minnesota at one point said you have no say in that you HAVE to pay into the union. That’s wrong. I know in SD you have the choice but it’s like 6-700 bucks to be a member of the SD Teacher’s union… lolwut?

My bro and his wife are teachers. I have several other close family members who are teachers. These are their words. Some schools better than others but the tenure rules hurt new teachers and protect the older ones.

Parenting… as what was talked about is a huge problem kn schools today. Parents expect to drop kids off have the teachers do all the work and pick up kids after work and hand them an iPad so they don’t bother them.

this is not ALL teachers or ALL parents but far too many of both. My SIL for example teaches 2nd grade. She has students who don’t know the alphabet to start the year. These same kids she sees over the summer with kids twice their age smoking dope on the streets by the school.

my youngest? Is 4 can count into the hundreds, knows his alphabet, and is already reading. These aren’t super feats by any means but it takes work as a parent besides dropping them off at school.

My son got screwed 2 years in a row by union rules as he was trying to become a teacher. Got a degree in history, had to add teacher classes, and then another year of credentialing. He was a huge expert on history and social studies, loved teaching kids those subjects.

He got hired, then a week before school starts an english teacher who got thrown out of their old school because they were a crap teacher but who managed to get a social studies credential, sniped the job out from my son due to union seniority. 2 years in a row.

That doesn’t stop the news media in cahoots with the Union putting out constant stories about “the teacher shortage” in Minnesota and every other state.

The only way to solve any supposed teacher shortage is to get rid of union and seniority rules so that newbies don’t get tossed around like a 3-week old salad.

It’s apparent to me that many teacher’s unions get their jollies in treating good teachers like crap.

See I actually only speak on what I know about, unlike you. But Unions in and of themselves are not inherently bad. I mean when people talk about the issue of deforestation and they want to attack logging companies etc… when the real issue is poor farmers clearing areas with fire so they can farm and survive another year… The hippies don’t want to attack those poor farmers but they need to attack someone so instead they attack the logging companies when those companies are planting more tress because without trees they have no company lol.

“Climate change” as in man made climate change is a money grab. A grab by all of those in power.

you can’t build X factor or divert water fro your farms Becuase of some bug… but the windmills can kill 1000s of endangered birds Becuase…. SCIENCE.

yes, the climate changes but thinking we have control over it is foolish. Think if “we” don’t pollute but China India Pakistan and other developing countries can without regard is foolish.

i see benefits to solar energy… on a personal scale… not on a scale that powers municipalities.

funneling trillions to feed the green machine instead of promoting things like regenerative farming practices… backyard gardens and flocks… products made WITHIN the borders of this country rather than overseas would be more beneficial to the climate than 1000 acre wind and solar farms.

let us, for the sake of argument, assume that climate change is real and human behavior is a significant factor and that it will become a problem/crisis in the not-to-distant future.

Are YOU ready to accept that the scientifically viable solutions exclude the ideas in things like the “Green New Deal” and include things like spreading capitalism to third-world countries so they stop burning so much wood, dung, and trash?

Nuclear is the lowest hanging fruit in the US. Capitalism and free markets are the lowest hanging fruit in developing nations.

That’s what this is about same as scamdemic. The reason the greenies don’t like nuclear (by far the best solution ) is b/c they don’t gaf about climate change, it’s culture change and communism.

You´ll find this one hilarious, five: our local green commies over here in the EUSSR (and the leaders of this abomination) are now declaring nuclear and gas “environmentally safe” while at the same time wanting to outlaw burning wood as “bad for the environment”.

It´s not about climate change, it´s about the deconstruction and destruction of Western society. But that is known.

Alright I was wrong, wasn’t paying close enough attention Sunday watching multi games at the same time…rewatched the Eagles / Lions highlights (below) and yeah…Eagles are legit good. Power run game, Hurts looks to be in full control and comfortable, AJ Brown the Lions never did stop once he just physically dominated them. Doesn’t feel like a game where we go to Philly and have things go our way. There’s definitely some opportunities against their defense but this is going to be a TOUGH game to pull out a victory. I’d personally put the spread Vikings +6.

Watch out for the running games
The Eagles have arguably the most dangerous ground game in the NFL, in large part because quarterback Jalen Hurts is such a threat in that area. They led the league with 159.7 rushing yards per game in 2021 and picked up right where they left off. They ran for 216 yards and four touchdowns against the Lions, with Hurts (17-90-1) and running back Miles Sanders (13-96-1) leading the way. This will be a major test for the Vikings’ run defense, which allowed the Packers to gain 6.6 yards per carry.

He collected more smaller stuff. Like he had Lugers and daggers, but he also had stuff like a plate of Himmler’s from Wewelsburg.

I found Himmler fascinating. There’s a beta-male who was given power. Society-supported psychopath. One of my favorite stories of him was how SS candidates had to complete an obstacle course in a certain amount of time, and he tried it himself. He was out there fumbling through it, waddling with his lady hips, totally failed, but when he finished, everyone is like, “Great time! You nailed it, sir!”

Very interesting crew, and Goebbels, Heydrich…everyone should learn about those guys so that stuff is never repeated.

I’ll never forget being at the top and there was a hang glider at the same level as me. The Italians built that for him for his 50th birthday. They have a car that is on rails. It goes in one direction and out the same (so you go backwards one way) and then an elevator to the top. Hitler rarely went as he was afraid of heights. I wish I had taken more pictures but was a kid still sort of.

That is awesome stuff your dad got to see and collect. I want a Luger. Lots of guys sent shit back (like in Band of Brothers) during or right after the war too.

Goebbels was a cripple as well. Heydrich got smoked which was good

I always wanted a Mauser Broomhandle. I don’t know why dad didn’t get one of those. He had the Luger and P38.

Heydrich was crazy. Got taken down by horse hair from the car seat getting into his wounds and causing sepsis. Nazis wiped out Lidice in retaliation, though. Creeps, all of them.

One of my dad’s friends, after the War, was in a newly-developing special ops of some kind.

In training, had to go 200 miles in Germany in X amount of time on foot without getting detected.

One late night, he saw a tiny opening in a hill and thought he could bed down. Crawled into it and found a huge cache of new German small arms. Brought 2 Lugers back and gave one to my dad. Went back a while later and could never find the cave again.

Luger, never fired, was stolen out of dad’s house in Texas 30 years later. Would be worth a boatload now.

That’s pretty awesome. German equipment is pretty neat stuff. There’s probably modern guns that evolved from it. I think the Beretta 92 borrowed from the P38 design.

I have one of those Mausers. I’ve never shot it. I should do that this fall.

I recently got a Walther 99 AS that I haven’t shot either. I don’t know if I will on that one. It’s never been shot. I got it because it is a James Bond gun, and I like James Bond.

Usually, when I shoot, I plink with a .22. Simple pleasures…

You should. Walther PPK was the orignal Bond?

I picked up a Walther PPQ a while ago. Fits my hand better than any other handgun I’ve owned.

They do have nice ergonomics. The P99 AS came with different size backstraps. If I put the biggest one on, I bet I would like it.

For me, the Beretta 92 is maybe most comfortable. I like the fatness of it.

Got myself a Walther Creed some time ago, I like it a lot.

Basically, yes.

Bond started off with a Beretta in Dr. No and was given the PPK fairly quickly into the movie, and that was his signature gun. He used the P5 a bit in the 80s. Then I think he went to the P99 in Goldeneye. He still had the P99 in Casino Royale, which is why I kind of wanted one. Casino Royale is “maybe” my favorite Bond. It changes, though.

I have a PPK but never shot it. I shot a Makarov once, which is kind of similar, and it was so snappy, that I said, “That’s enough of that.”

Honestly Mick, do it no matter what. I’ll never ever forget holding that Omaha Beach sand in my hands or reading a lot of the headstones at the cemetery. These were just boys, mostly 18 or even 17. Just babies. They gave all and they are heroes.

I have some pix with the big guns too somewhere. Plus, I met an actual Rudder Ranger at Point Du Hoc.

Flase, Det scored a TD on like the first or second play of the 4th qtr to make it a 10 point game, then scored another td with like 4 mins left to make it a 3 pt game. Det def coudn’t get a stop on the last possession though and Phi ran out the 4 mins for the 3 point win. It was not decided until the last possession.

not a guaranteed win by any means.

Jalen hurts is the eagles offense. I’m putting asamoah as a spy on him.

Last year Big Ed held hurts to 55 yards rushing and 178 passing but lost.

TB was the QB and went 22/36 for 226 and no TDs while the Den RBs combined for just under 100 yards.

This is why I rule in NFL. Last year doesn’t mean shit as he had a rookie as top wr, 3 OL out all year, all 3 rb’s out large chunks, was a first time starter, didn’t have Brown.
