Merry Monday, everyone!
I hope all of your weekends were fun and relaxing. Temps were over 100 here…..my kind of weather. We did have a fun weekend, too. Kiddo and I went to the dirt track races on Thursday, then I had my 30 year class reunion on Friday. It was fun to see old classmates again. I did get a chuckle out of the fact that back in high school, most of my classmates thought I was a bit too wild and crazy (they were right), most of my friends were a couple years older than me back then. Now, we get to the 30th reunion, and all of them are getting drunk while I’m the sober one who went home at 8:00, I htought it was amusing. We had a great time, though. The fam and I also decorated a float and were in a parade in my hometown on Saturday. I pulled my boat in the parade in memory of my uncle (it was his boat, he bought it new in 1979), and we all sat in the back & played pinochle & blasted some polka music. We had a good time.

From CBS Sports, Ben Leber said that Mike Zimmer did not like Kirk Cousins. This isn’t really the bombshell that it’s being made out to be, Leber is basically saying what most of us already assumed.

Soon the Vikings will be in training camp in 5 days. We all know how this year is shaping up. KAM brought in some defensive players in the off season, most notably Z Smith and Jordan Hicks. So they could be components that make the defense better. He also drafted several defensive players who could contribute. Time will tell if the new defensive scheme, DC, and players actually pan out. On offense, KOC is is the biggest question mark, followed by the offensive line. Can the rookie head coach take the ingredients of a pretty good offense last year (plus Irv Smith Jr) and turn them into a dominant scoring machine? We’ll see.

I’m excited for the new situation Cousins and the team find themselves in this season. It’s much better, head coach who isn’t on a power trip and doesn’t hate him and diminish his skill set by putting him in high pressure situations. A renewed focus on offensive football and creating optimal situations for the QB to execute. Everything is better across the board, still likely need a few offseasons to round out and fine tune the roster but heading in the right direction.
I like Five and have no problem with our sparring other than his child state comments and grade school labeling. I accept that as just par for the course on the internet though. People are either in parent state (even me sometimes) or child state most of the time.

Beyond that, Cousins owns an NFL record. He is the only QB in NFL history to complete 80% or more of his passes in 5 games in a season. At one time (with the Redskins) he owned the NFL record for completion percentage in home games for a season. I think in 2016 he completed over 78% of his passes in home games.

The statistics on Cousins seem endless. He has just played at a high level ever since becoming a starter in 2015. In 2017 he had 26 different O-line combinations in front of him by week 13 due to so many injuries. The Redskins were signing O-linemen mid week who started in front of Cousins on Sunday. Cousins called it his best season, because despite having this morass of an O-line in front of him he still threw for over 4,000 yards and 27 TD’s and the team went 7-9 entirely on Cousins arm.

Cousins wore teams out with Jordan Reed back in the day. Reed ended up getting injured and missed basically the whole 2017 season though. I was shocked when the Vikings basically took the TE out of the offense when Cousins arrived. Maybe the single dumbest move I’ve ever seen.

The Bears will be worse than the Lions. Conklin is gone, though all the Viking Hoopleheads are “sure” that Irv Smith will be better. The offense last year was explosive but inefficient.
Smith was supposed to be the #1 TE last year not Conklin and the comments coming out of camp indicated Smith was going to be heavily featured in the offense. I’d say that’s a strong indicator that Smith is better than Conklin.

Well no one knows what will happen this year. Smith could pull up lame in the first game and be out for the season again. Or he could take some time to actually learn the offense and come out of the gates slowly. Or he could come out of the gates like a shot and put up big numbers. Obviously we all hope for the latter.

We had a lot of 3 and outs by design though. Zimmer wanted to run clock and/or force the opponents to take their timeouts. Also kneel downs at the end of a game or half count as a 3 and out.
They only had one game end in what would count as a 3 and out, designing your team to lead the league in 3 and outs hardly seems like a recipe for success, especially when your defense isn’t particularly good.
I totally agree yet in the 4th quarter, with the lead we saw Zim repeatedly run the ball 3 times usually for negative yards, and punt. I got sick of that.

Kubiak Jr was in a little over his head in my opinion. Gotta make the jump sometime though. He got the opportunity and was an OC of an NFL team. Seemed like the first drive scripts went pretty well and I think the Vikings led the league in first drive scoring. After that he seemed to not know what to do if we had a “sudden change” and the Vikings got the ball off a turnover deep in the opponents territory. Drives also stalled simply because of Zimmer ball. Zim wanted long, time consuming drives of 10 or more plays and 6 or more minutes to protect his defense. Unfortunately that made the offense immensely predictable. Putting long drives like that together doesn’t help the offense, it limits it.

Kirk Cousins has never had a second year in a new system in his entire career as a starter. Yet since becoming a starter he is the only QB in the NFL to have thrown at least 25 TD’s every year. Only two QB’s have thrown for more yards, and only three have thrown more TD’s. One day he might actually have the same OC two seasons in a row. Right now he’s 0 for 8…. Brady had three OC’s in 20 years with New England.

Passer rating is an outdated garbage stat no credible source uses anymore. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Hurts sucks, especially when you add about 700 yards and 10 TDs rushing. He is nothing close to Kirk as a passer though and has a long way to go in that regard. I did not like his long term potential as a passer coming out and I still don’t as I think he’ll never develop into a consistently accurate passer, but if you design an offense around him to take advantage of his running ability like the Ravens have with Lamar, you can win some games and make the playoffs but likely struggle in the playoffs as have the Ravens with Lamar. Also, Mond is a less mobile shittier version of Hurts, just an FYI.

4000 yards passing in 20 starts isn’t all that impressive. It’s 200 yards a game. NFL average for passing yards per game is around 235 yards so he’s well below average. Cousins for his career has averaged 260 yards a game for comparison, so he is well above average. So Hurts thus far is below average in passing and above average in rushing which is pretty much the norm these days for young QB’s. They don’t know what to do with the ball, so they take off running.

I think Teddy would have been a slightly above average QB with us had the injury not happened. He was a great leader, and is a great person and he looked like he was just starting to figure things out that pre season, his connection with Diggs was evident. That being said, I dont think he could have done what Keenum did in 2017 and I dont think he can put up the stats (which I dont care about) that Kirk does. He had his weaknesses but I think in the proper system, the dude can win games. They wont be blow outs, but he can do it. Would we have won a SB with him healthy? No. I dont think so.
That’s fair a fair assessment. He’s an underwhelming QB on many teams, so I get it. But I think he had the perfect mix of caution and guts to combine with Zimmer’s best defenses to win a lot of games.
He needed a solid run game to help him out. You cant have an offensive thats build to go deep often with him. He got that in 2015. He would not have got that in 2016. Im curious how he would have looked in Shurmers offense but again, in the past and we will never know.

Had a great but brief visit to the fine state of North Dakota. Found a great out of the way place to kennel the doggo (Bed N Biscuit Ranch Bismarck) that we recommend. Headed over to Fargo and visited with some friends at a German themed restaurant downtown, got to see some of Fargo’s diversity AND watch a Roe V Wade protest. Found a little hidden gem of an RV park, only 7 sites quiet full hookups for $25 in Buffalo, ND. Spent a few of our hard earned tax exempt dollars in Bismarck on the return trip. Always enjoy ND. Only downside to the whole trip is that I-94 just west of Fargo looks like Bristol speedway with big chunks of concrete missing everywhere, and there is literally road construction every 5-10 miles all the way from Fargo to Bismarck.

Yep, on some super steep side street, not a tree around, about 30 minutes into it I was done but the kid not so much. Dinasaur Park out in Rapid City is like that too strangely enough, its also hard to get to and no trees around in the actual park despite it being in the mountains.
I’m guessing it was a paltry protest, but I haven’t been the Fargo in several years.
It was about a block east, we were on first ave n not far from river…just some drums beating and some indecipherable chants. Much of that area was blocked off for an upcoming street fair and at first I thought it had to do with the fair. Part of the local color was getting the red face gal screaming an obscenity at me while simultaneously flipping me off because I had the temerity to have to back my RV into a parking spot she wanted so I could turn around where the street was blocked. Must have been a very stressful day for her and then having to deal with such adversity.

Every once in a while in good ol’ Elk River MN we get 3 or 4 people standing in front of the government building holding homemade signs against ICE. One day I had the pleasure of visiting the govt building on the same day they were protesting and I was about 10 minutes ahead of schedule, so I had time to ask them why they were against the agency that arrests the most child sex traffickers. It was a fun convo. They were nice enough and the conversation was civil, but their only point was “separating families is evil” despite the fact that it happens to legal citizens all the time. I asked them if the children should not be separated from the father after a DUI or after CPS is called and abuse is confirmed.

I think the populace should all rise up and demand the President and his administration immediately return the country to the energy independence that we achieved under Donald Trump. This is a National Security issue. Dependence on any country for any commodity (like China for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for instance, or Russia, Saudi Arabia, or Venezuela for oil) that affects National Security is a terrible plan. Trump understood the serious mistakes politicians had made over the years, and he knew “America First” was the only way to secure the Nation.
