Vikings 34 – Cardinals 26
Week 8 is in the books, and the Minnesota Vikings are 6-1 after defeating the Cardinals 34-26 today in Minneapolis. Here is the box score and stat sheet, courtesy of ESPN.
Offense:
The running game set the tone on offense, as Cook and Mattison both came out of the gate strong in the first half, and the Cardinals could do nothing to stop them. Cousins was off in the first half, he missed some wide open throws that he should have hit. He did make some plays with his arm, and even got into the run game with a nice 20 yard TD run on the first drive, but he missed some throws that he should have made.
Defense:
Well, the defense looked MUCH better than they had throughout the season. They were getting interior pressure, which is something we haven’t seen a lot of, and it paid off handsomely for them, as they were able to make plays against the run, and they were able to rattle Murray and help shut down the pass. The D allowed one drive to end the first half, but other than that, they looked really good in the first half. The defense seems to think that there’s a rule saying that you have to allow the other team back into a game. Someone should tell them that isn’t true. After a strong start, the defense faltered in the 3rd quarter and into the fourth. They stoppped applying pressure, and the Cardinals racked up lots of yards and points. The defense did manage to force some turnovers, which was huge in putting this game away.
Special Teams
In what has become a recurring theme, the special teams looked good, with the exception of Greg Joseph. Joseph once again missed an extra point that could have turned out to be crucial. When a touchdown gave the Vikings an opportunity to go up by 2 scores late in the fourth quarter, Joseph doinked the extra point off of the left upright, and kept the Vikings lead at 8.
Summary
The Vikings rushing offense looked stout against a very good run defense. Coming into the game, the Cardinals had the 7th-best run defense in the NFL, so kudos to the O-line, and to Cook and Mattison for setting the tone early. The defense looked better for most of the game, but then there’s that pesky third quarter again. The reffing was absolute garbage this entire game, and the bad calls went both ways. I won’t bother elaborating, but I expect more from Brad Allen’s crew, they’re normally one of the better crews in the NFL, but this week, they were horrible.
The Cardinals are not a bad team, yet the Vikings managed to keep this game in control for most of the game, and they came away with the W. Your Minnesota Vikings are now 6 and 1, and sit alone atop the NFC North. Enjoy this win, enjoy this season, and enjoy having your team sitting at 6-1. SKOL!!!!!

Definitely can see the improvement in the run D in the past few games. Honestly, the coverage looked better today, too.
Coverage was decent. Need to knock off the strip attempts (Kendricks) and focus on tackling the guy instead of giving up a 38 yard TD.
Yeah, I was disappointed with that effort from EK, but I do like to see that they’re making an effort to go for the turnovers more this year, and it’s paid off quite a few times.
True. Gotta make sure you get the stop, then make a play for the ball. Their actively looking for TOs, which they did not do under Zimmer.
Overall its a nice strategy that working.
I like our trajectory. The offense is improving each week, albeiit slowly. The defense is improving each week as well. If they can keep improving, I’m curious to see how well they’re playing in January.
I’d like to see a game like the pukers game where everything is clicking.

Even that game, we really only played one solid half. I think we only scored 2 field goals in the 2nd half, our offense mostly sputtered after halftime.

Oline looks great the first half, then looked tired in the 2nd. JJ Watt just dominated Ingram, but he can do that to anyone, can’t he? AZ brought pressure almost every down, but we did not react well to counter it. A few more play action could have helped. But we got the Big W, and we were the best team on the field. SKOL
JJ is old and not that good anymore. Fortunately they were down several starters and gave us the ball 3 times for 13 points. A win is a win even if we look bad doing it

O-line did pretty well. I mean, AZ was doing their best to apply pressure, so there will be guys who get through, but the O-line did a pretty good job of handling the blitzes and at least giving Cousins time to get rid of the ball. O-line was also doing a hell of a job creating running lanes for Cook & Mattison (and Cousins).

They outplayed the Cards most of the game, yet still found a way to keep it closer than it should have been. As always, there’s lots to not like in that win, but picking apart a win is better than bemoaning a loss.
Winning is more fun than losing, but I’m not excited about this team like I was in 2017
