Alright, it’s been much more calm since all the excitement of Tuesday’s trade deadline. I’m excited to see how this offense looks with a solid tight end on the roster. If nothing else, it’ll give Cousins a check-down option to go to when the pressure is on. Also, having another play maker that teams have to account for should help take some of the pressure off of JJ. They can’t double-team everyone.

The math doesn’t add up. I can see with my eyes that people are not working, yet unemployment claims go down. Restaurants are still closing due to staff shortages, businesses are laying off people, we can’t hire the people we need, yet there are supposedly less unemployed people? It just doesn’t add up.

The only thing I’ve come to is a change in the psyche of people. I think less high school kids are getting jobs and a lot of people feel entitled to a job that will allow them to work from home. We can’t even get people that are half way qualified to apply for our positions, much less to accept them and then stick around. We have nearly doubled the starting pay since I started with the company less than 10 years ago and it’s positions with very good opportunity for advancement.

In my day, you could go a long way before you found a high-schooler who didn’t work part time, and usually full-time during the summer.

Now they have to do volunteer and other crap to get into college to pump their resume, or if they’re on a club sports team, fugggedaboutthetime to work.

I just don’t see the people struggling to get jobs around where I live.
I can’t hire enough people.
All the upper managers have or will retire and I have a great career path laid out. Even if you get out of healthcare, I know college kids are making a killing right now at crappy jobs.

For Example, my college age kid is now a part time manager at Chipolte since they can’t find enough people. He switched jobs like this 3 times in the last 2 years.
Chipotle pays a 19 year old college student $16.25, and they also pay around 4K into a college scholarship for him.

I get that not everyone is going to have the same experiences as myself. But I’ve never made more money, and the future is looking very bright for me and my family.
Its’ also why I keep telling everyone to be happy and that things aren’t that bad. Maybe they are bad for some on here.

I just don’t see it myself.

Hadn’t had lunch, so was going to go in and nose around for something to chomp on.

Same thing that happened in every skilled position. Covid got all the boomers to retire. The genexers all got promoted to take their place. The millennials are spoiled useless shits, as a generation and are living off trust funds and welfare and have not put in the time to be skilled enough to replace the genexers. The gen zee is even worse and won’t fill the entry level positions.

Bad parenting and democrats are what happened to create the shortage. Nobody wants to work and nobody is qualified for most jobs because they have been useless pieces of shit their whole life.

As I told my sons several years ago, you have it made because your competition is so bad.

MT Viking

I get that, but speaking specifically of anesthesiologists I understand there is a carefully controlled supply and demand for all specialties. I get that some boomers took the pandemic as a sign to retire. I get that surgical business is booming with the aging population and post pandemic.

However, the numbers still don’t add up. And ours is a uniquely specialized and nontransferable skill set that cost us huge amounts in student loans and many years of our lives.

AMA fucked up bad. They specifically limit who can do what and they underestimated the need for that position 10-15 years ago. Medical schools are controlled by the AMA, which you for sure already know. If there were 300,000 extra radiologists in the country, your pay would be 50% what it is.

I’m going to be flamed for this but I think a cadre of the old timers quit. Although male dominated, a rising proportion of anesthesiologists are women. Many women in medicine are demanding work life balance and also often have a spouse in medicine who can offset their decreased work hours.

Old timers quit…fewer people to take call work evenings and weekends. Newcomers don’t want to work 11 hour days six days a week so seek out better hours. Hospitals become desperate to keep positive overhead on surgical budgets. Wages go up, hourly demands drop. Anesthesiologists on the positive side of the supply and demand curve can afford to be choosy.

They redefine what unemployment is.
Not sure what they are using today, but it used to be you were only counted as unemployed if you were looking for work. Of course, so many people don’t want to work, so they are likely not counted as unemployed.

Unemployment is based off of people “actively working for a job”. Once they quit, they statistically fall out of the labor force. So unemployment is not a measure of the % of people working, it is a measure of the % of people who want to work, who are working

I found a bunch of interesting charts in the link below.
They have the civilian labor force participation rate.
The participation rate measures the percentage of Americans who are in the labor force, while the unemployment rate measures the percentage within the labor force that is currently without a job.

It was around 62% 20 years ago.
It drop to 58% in late 2009
Rose to 61% Feb 2020
Crashed to 51% april 2020
Now is at 60%.

Click around on the graphs. There’s a lot of info here.

I was struck when freeze listed all the Vikings QBs, and stated that all that information was a cut and paste away on his computer.

I remember a time when there were no personal computers, no internet. Social studies teacher might give an assignment like how many prime ministers of Canada have served multiple terms or something equally esoteric like list all Vikings QBs from beginning to present. Subsequently, the student would visit the school library during and after school, paging through encyclopedias, maybe reading a couple of chapters in a political science book, etc…

I’m left to wonder if there were any tangible benefits to that exercise. My grandkids seem much less curious about the ways of the world, perhaps having instant access to information makes us as a species less curious about history? Any teachers on here that can weigh in?

We see lots of issues with truck drivers especially that are 100% reliant on GPS. They get lost and turn on roads they should not be on because the GPS said so. Complete ignorance and blind obedience. A large portion of the truck drivers I see now don’t belong driving a passenger car on the highway, much less an 18 wheeler.

I was thinking when I read this, I wonder if the average college graduate would be able to orient themselves on our place(s). As in, to find our home follow the dry creek bed until you come to the fence, follow the fenceline west until you come to a gate, follow that road north until you see the WAPA electrical lines, follow them northwest until you see our place in the valley below. Go!

How many people know the difference between avenues and streets anymore? Or realize that even numbered interstates run east and west? And I agree, females seem to navigate by landmarks more. I would say something genetic but apparently sex is not genetic anymore so I don’t know.

This reminds me of a funny occurrence this hunting season. I was hunting with a couple of friends, all military. I was with 2 other guys, and there were 2 guys that went a different way and ended up shooting a spike elk. He ended up bedding down so we waited awhile, we got in touch with them again and asked my buddy where he was. Mind you, we are in the mountains about a mile apart. Anyway, my buddy’s response is, he’s to the left of the wallow.

Yeah it seems at times a double edged sword that everyone can know anything very quickly. But it’s a tool like any tool it’s how you use it. Classrooms today still use books (at times) and internet at other times. Teachers will make kids use sources from multiple mediums, so like you have to cite a book, a webpage, and an article. The nice part now is you can use technology to help you find an article much quicker.

Well I was a nerd so I spent a lot of times in libraries. Thinking back to my premed days, circa late 80s, I remember looking for, say, a book on immunohistochemistry by looking in the card catalog and subsequently seeking it out. Sometimes you’d find a good book on breast augmentation across the aisle. Then there was the whole literature search, fire up a MedLine CD, write down a bunch of articles, go seek out the bound copies and make photocopies of same, sometimes pulling fiche. I guess it is a little nostalgic although it is definitely easier to pull an article these days. Shoot my subscription to an online radiology encyclopedia and differential diagnosis enumerator gives me faster and more accurate information than an entire bookshelf of textbooks.

Information is now a commodity that is accessible to everyone at home.

Just an aside… a person once asked Einstein if he knew how many feet are in a mile. His response was that he didn’t know, since information like that would just clog his brain up and he could look that up any time he wanted.

I use to read encyclopedias from cover to cover as a kid. If the internet were available I would have read everything about everything, and back in the day, remembered it all. I don’t see that in kids today. Nobody makes decisions and plans in advance because they don’t have to. It’s a huge swing in thought processes.

remember when Brady got hurt week 1 in 2008 and Matt Cassel led the Patriots to 11-5 and they missed the playoffs? stacked AFC that year. Division winners all had 11+ wins, and the wild card teams were Colts (12-4) and Ravens (11-5)

Not sure why Ravens had the tie-breaker over the Patriots.

Meanwhile the Cardinals won their division at 9-7.

I believe that’s the year the Vikings got beaten in Minnesota by the Eagles in the wildcard round and Birk’s last play as a Viking was a fumble. (sigh)

Last night my home workstation finally went live. Could be a blessing or a curse. I guess if I really wanted to I could demand to work from home every day and become a big fat turd.

So weird, there is a subset of the program (Centricity Universal Viewer) I use to view studies called the navigator pane, has all the sequences in a small window that lives (on my work computer) in a locked position in the upper left corner of my LH diagnostic monitor. I just “reach” up there to pull down sequences as needed. When I finished firing up my home workstation, the navigator was sitting right in the middle of the screen. Had to put in a ticket to IT, she remoted in on Bomgar about 6:30. We struggled with it for an hour. The problem as it turned out was that in display manager, the “5” screens I had needed to be aligned vertically across the top before the navigator would allow itself to be dropped at the top. The screens looked perfectly aligned just looking at them live. We adjusted and adjusted pixel by pixel each screen alignment and it wouldn’t work. Finally we just shuffled them and placed them all out of whack and then pulled them back into alignment. That worked.

Somewhere a Microsoft developer is laughing.

Is this at your shouse? Isn’t that out in the middle of nowhere? Do they run fiber out to lots of out-of-the-way places in that area…or is it wireless?

My workplace is starting fiber drops in a rural area, so that is why I was wondering.

We use StarLink for all our personal needs. Yes, the local ISP (MidRivers) is doing fiber install to all the rural sites, I believe it is a federal mandate to have fiber installed for rural usage. Helps that I have pestered my neighbor (US congress) and senators for months to get me access.

There are four homes included in this branch of the fiber network. My install was prioritized as it is a rural health access issue.

If I was working I would turn off the shop UFO lights that are creating that harsh glare on the right of the image. That “SoftGlow” wall lighting off the back of the monitor makes viewing studies much easier on the eyes.

Poor dental health can cause infections and/or inflammation of the gums. Cytokines (cell to cell signal molecules) associated with chronic inflammation are associated with lower life expectancy.

MT probably has seen CRP results, which is a broad range marker.
Basically tells you there’s inflammation somewhere.

The IL markers are more disease specific. These are often involved in cellular transformation, and this could potentially open up a pathway to cancer (more cells transforming more likely something goes a sideways).

TLDR:
Inflammation bad.

I have a specific problem, that not many dental hi! gene! schools recognize any more, but they used to.

That’s that in my day, a lot of dentists and stores gave out or sold hard-bristled toothbrushes.

That’s what I grew up on and I brushed and brushed and it thoroughly destroyed my gums. It’s a friggin struggle with my teef every day.

That’s why you only see soft and the occasional medium bristles now.

I got a paper route when 10 years old. Used the collection money for pinball and soda at the pharmacy after school each day. next dentist appointment I had 11 cavities.
Only change was more soda. Still brushed my teeth twice per day and we also had a water pick thing.

I remember one of those games with Johnson, though. We were playing the Panthers and somehow won despite all appearances to the contrary. Peppers was an absolute beast that day. Vikings were triple-teaming him and he was tearing us apart. He was on such another level that I wondered if they dosed him with horse hormones before the game.

Joseph wasn’t good to begin with. He was about league average last year, a little below avg with PATs and a little above average in FGs. It’s not like he’s some young developing player either. I have not noticed any issues with the holder like laces in, but I don’t pay that much attention either. Even when he had his poop in a group he was still missing PATs. Joseph just sucks.

The article is from a fantasy perspective, but some interesting stuff here anyway:

The Vikings have been somewhat quietly going about their business on their way to a 6-1 record, and Kirk Cousins has been a top-12 quarterback in four of his seven appearances this year. The Vikings are finding ways to win that they didn’t under Mike Zimmer, and whilst Cousins hasn’t had any true eruption games, he has been a steady force and had four games of 18 fantasy points or more. The Commanders allow the sixth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks and are far more stout against the run, where they rank second in defensive DVOA, as opposed to the pass where they rank 28th.

I think some politicians get elected because they think they can go to Washington and make some changes. Then they get there and their parties leadership tells them, tow the line or you will not get to be on any influential committees and when you come up for election next time, don’t expect any funding from us. It’s the system, not necessarily the individual politicians. When you are in that kind of system you either get jaded fast or you just try to do the best you can within the system.

If everyone stood together on that, that we wanted corruption and money out of politics and that’s it. For a few election cycles, they’d have to cater to there. But instead the Republicans will scream taxes and abortion and guns.. and the Dems will yell racists, my body my choice, environment… all the while the people “representing” those people don’t care about any of those ideals and just keep swindling the country.

Then tell me what it is that the Republican Party cares so much about. Again, don’t say less government that’s a lie, don’t say less taxes, that’s a lie, don’t say gun rights, that’s a lie. Just like the Dems, they say the words but don’t actually stand for anything. So we need to shake shit up.

And you are lying to yourself or in denial if you don’t think this is the case.

I mean what items are you so aligned with with the Republican party? They raise taxes, the NRA owns them and the NRA doesn’t give a shit about gun rights, they care about gun manufacturer’s bottom line. Is just an abortion thing? Because what do you think the Republican party actually stands for? They care about 1 thing… their party prospering to pay back their campaign donners. This is basic shit. I refuse to just accept and vote them back in.

I am actually excited at the notion of SD getting flipped from Red to Blue because of what a corrupt POS Krusty Gnome is. This is a salient point. Use to be as parents aged the children would care for them in their homes where they were raised. Now unfortunately it was typically put on the daughters to give up their career or personal aspirations to stay behind and care for the aging parents while the men went on to work and do what they wanted. Society and building families has changed as has the occupational workforce forcing or setting a social expectation for mothers to be active full time in the workplace even if they choose not to and or are raising children thus the aging parents are left without options. If social security needs revamped and hopefully not eliminated why not give incentives for children to stay behind and care for the aging and help eliminate multiple issues at the same time.

The question is how long it takes to “phase out”. I do not think anyone is talking about cutting off seniors who need it. I have contributed to SS for 40 years now. I also aggressively contribute to my 401k as well. While the SS contributions have been higher than the 401K contributions, my 401K has much more money than My SS return will be. So government bureaucracy and waste, have made my SS contributions about 40% “less effective” than comparable 40K investments. That means if we did away with SS and that same contribution were funneled into a 401K-like investment, smart people would do much, much better

Lifer

SS was never suppose to compete with the returns of your 401k or other investments. It’s a social program we all pay in to as a society to ensure as we all age there are resources available for everyone to at least survive with the minimum and have a decent quality of life. Why are people so concerned with someone else not making as much or contributing as much having something to fallback on to survive?? Do you want people starving to death, living on the streets because that’s what would happen if we do not pay in to a social safety net. Without it theres a massive divide of have and have nots and our society would not survive or be nearly as harmonious as it currently is.

My point is that I paid more into SS than I have contributed to my own savings, yet, I will get more out of my own savings than SS. Any government program is filled with waste. The current rates for FICA-mandated taxes are 12.4% of your gross wages for Social Security and 2.9% of your gross wages for Medicare. But those rates are split between you and your employer.

12.4+2.9=15.3%

half is 6.2+1.45=7.65%

7.65% of 50k is $3,825 or $7,650 between you and your employer.

mover 40 years startinf at 0 with a 5% return you should be at almost 1million dollars.

and that’s only 20-60

18-66 is 48 years where you’d be at
1.5m.

So at 66 you could have 1.5m on a 50k salary to live out another… oh… let’s say 15 years to 81…. You’d get a check for about $8,300/month.

I expect that half of the transgenders and lgbtqweirdos will be on disability before the next 10 years expires. Uff duh.

I’d say sooner. Biden has 2 years to ram through orders as a dictator.

DE – that was my point exactly. If I were to have invested that 15% into my own plans, I would be significantly better off. In fact, that 15% alone would have given me more money now than my 401K contributions plus my SS. So we could save money and be better off.

The big problem is: The government has to fix it. When is the last time they did anything right?

Yep.
If you run the math on 15% of your average lifetime earnings of $35,000 a year at 5%, it equates to about $600,000 over 40 years. Not including what you are already doing.

Here is another way to look at it. My SS contributions account for 60% of my retirement money being socked away somewhere.

But they will only account for 40% of my return once I retire.

Biggest ponzi scheme the world has ever seen.

The crooks in our government should all be Madoff’d.

What makes it even worse, is the ponzi scheme worked because you had few people collecting and many people paying.

Now, the people who want to keep SS, undermine the very system they want by paying people not to work, abortions and encouraging low population growth. All the things required to keep it solvent are now actively being destroyed. And people support this nonsense.

(Not you…..)

That was what Paul Ryan was trying to do. Shift a portion into the stock market, with a few safe guards on it.
I was a big fan of this in 2008.
I also liked his plan for Medicare, but now its looking like the private health insurance market is a mess. So I’m not sure if that would have worked the way I thought it would have.
Anyways, he at least had some plans.
These days most politicians won’t put out a plan ahead of time since it gives the opp. a chance to beat it into the ground.
Its sad really.

Here are my major issues with social security. First off, I am 59 and the money would be nice when I retire around 70.

  1. When implemented, benefits kicked in 4 years after the average life expectancy for the now cancelled white man.
  2. the money you pay in should be yours, not just added to the general fund for politicians to spend as they see fit. The money is not yours. plain and simple.
  3. When I was younger, I was for changing things up. As I have paid in for more than 40 years, I now want my money.

There are a ton of things this government does that it specifically should not. However, once they entered the con game, may as well keep it up.

In other words, all you fucking millenials and Gen z , x, y and whatever… get to work.

I’ve heard some more libertarian folks among conservatives propose ideas like this – reducing or reworking or eliminating entitlement benefits. I think Americans benefit from a certain amount of a social safety net, but it’s been poorly managed and gotten out of hand.

I don’t like the idea of having paid into it for the past 25 years and not getting anything out when I hit retirement age, but I also didn’t like paying my mortgage when I was way upside down after the housing market collapse, and I did anyway. I also don’t like paying my student loans while others take the handout, but I did anyway.

If bearing this burden helps the future of the country I love which has given me so much opportunity and freedom, so be it. I could consider my payments as a tax for the benefit of being raised by my parents (and them being raised by theirs), which is some pretty impressive justification and rationalization on my part, but if I can’t change it I’d rather move on then spend the rest of my life angry about it. I’ll save my anger for Gregg Williams.
