Happy Tuesday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us as we discuss the latest Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings updates, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the open thread, which is……open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

What an exciting evening I had last night! My wife called me in the middle of the afternoon to tell me that she’d gotten two tickets to a banquet for Cross Training, a local ministry, and Dalvin Cook was the speaker. So, kiddo and I attended the event. Dalvin showed up a bit late, as the coaches called a last-minute practice for running backs only, but he did make it.

He shared some amazing insight about his faith, how he grew up, how football saved him, and about his journey to the NFL that led him to Minnesota. I’ll tell ya’, my respect for this man grew a LOT last night. What a great human being. Humble, reverant, and honest are the words that come to mind first.I took a video of the event, but it’s too large to share. I’ll have to play around (and talk to someone who knows what they’re doing), and try to share it with you here.

Minnesota Vikings News:

We want to have a talk about the Vikings defense.

Skoldiers posted his Week 12 Report Card: Vikings vs. Patriots.

Video of the Day:

Here’s a short segment of a video from last night’s banquet. Sorry about the shakiness & the audio quality, I took this with my phone, and this is after about 45 minutes of holding the damn thing. The other video is too long to upload, I’m still trying to get it done & will share once I do. For now, enjoy!

I think we are looking at 13 wins as the floor. 14 wins is very possible if both Rogers and Fields are out, and those 2 teams are just going through the motions. If we beat the Jets, I think we could go 14-3.
Our schedule is not difficult after the Jets game.

I think we will lose 2 more games.

If I had to guess I would include Detroit as a possible loss since they play us tough.
Bears and Packers will (hopefully) be looking forward to their offseason when we meet.
Indy? maybe if it was a road game.

if we lose to the Jets and beat the Colts and the Giants (both at home), then we only need to win one of the three remaining divisional games (all on the road)

GB is rated highest, but Rodgers is hurt, but that game is weeks away, so who knows.
Detroit plays tough and they’re better than people think. They’re an average team and divisional games are weird.
Chicago is the last game, and so it may be meaningless.

I think 12-5 is the most likely outcome (from my perspective) at this point.

peterplaysbass
29 November 2022 1:20 pm

The Minnesota Vikings had a slightly higher DVOA than New England for their Thanksgiving night win, 2.4% to -0.6%. What can I say, running into the kicker penalties don’t count in our ratings. The Vikings moved up slightly in DVOA and now rank 22nd. They are the first team to ever have a negative DVOA with a 9-2 record, more than 10 percentage points lower than any other 9-2 team since 1981.

Worst 9-2 team ever (yes, Brad, according to “one” metric), but at 9-2 is starts to not matter. Missing the playoffs is nearly impossible at this point, so now the focus should be on two things: getting better and maintaining/improving seeding

benjammin

I think they’ll continue to improve DVOA but probably drop a couple more games this season, definitely lose the Colts game because they beat the chefs

I’m not sure how much you chat with the FO folks, but here is my current take on their system.
I think the problem with DVOA is overstating a blow out loss, or a blow out win.
Dallas absolutely kick our butts, but it was one game. And that one game dropped them from 15ish (forget exactly) to 26.
It appears to be a complete fluke, that is now dropping them in way too much in their rankings.
I do like that they add in the kicker thing. Feels like they are trying hard to pretend that that it was a fluke the Vikings won that they don’t account for.
There is one big problem here though:
In football, you can’t just take out a drive and pretend all other plays remain the same. People love to do it, but its completely flawed logic.
This ignores that the Vikings last two drives were designed to burn clock or time outs, and protect the ball.
I doubt if we are losing or tied we go and run 6 plays for 10 yards and burn 3:46 off the clock on our 2nd to last drive if we were losing or tied.
Or we just run Cook 3 times for 1 yard when we were at the mid field on our last drive. We were about 25 yards away from an FG.
If you ignore the TD kick off return, we scored 26 points on 9 drives up to that point. So what are the chances that they stop us? Not good since they only forced 1 punt and had 1 INT until those last two drives.
So even if you take out that roughing the Kicker, there’s still a very good chance we win that game.
Me thinks their system is very flawed.

29 November 2022 2:14 pm

all systems are flawed, some are useful

good thoughts here, though

I will point out that the Vikings moved down 7 spots after the Dallas game (from 17 to 24), not 15-ish as you thought

Also, FO has the Vikings outplaying the Patriots, but not by much (which makes sense from what I saw when watching the game)

In football, you can’t just take out a drive and pretend all other plays remain the same. People love to do it, but its completely flawed logic.

100% spot on. I totally agree. If one drive changes, the next drive will be different because the coaching will be responding to the new reality.

I do believe that plays like runs which don’t gain sufficient yardage to be considered “successful” from a down-and-distance perspective are counted as less detrimental when the running team is up by a score and very near the end of the game (or up by two scores and in the 4th quarter), but I don’t have access to that information. It’s something I have an impression of based on others’ dialogues with FO staff in the comments section during previous seasons.

My only note is that making this was the first time I wished I’d used gloves when chopping jalapenos. My hands were burning all night. But otherwise it’s pretty easy, which is nice.

Also made this a few weeks back, very yummy.

And I did wash my hands a bunch, but probably not thoroughly enough immediately after chopping/mincing the jalapenos.

Kirk Cousins was the #1 QB of week 12 (DYAR)

It certainly helps Cousins’ ranking that he gained a league-best 53 DYAR due to opponent adjustments, but he also played his best when it mattered most. He was the week’s best passer on third/fourth downs (9-of-13, 110 yards, seven conversions, two touchdowns, one interception) and in the red zone (6-of-8, 45 yards, three touchdowns, one sack).

I like our chances against the Jets (as of last week) better than I liked our chances against the Patriots, but Mike White’s performance last week (albeit against the Bears) is no joke:

[White] averaged 10.6 yards per dropback and 8.3 yards after the catch per completion, both the best marks among full-time starters. He was perfect on deep balls, completing each of his four attempts for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

Yup, we’ll have to see if Mike White is a one-hit wonder this year too. He did apparently lose feeling in his hand last year, and has the Vikings pass defense to go up against this week, but that’s a fairly large unknown.

Garrett Wilson is really good, though.

Healthcare sucks. I had a follow up appointment today from my retina tear laser repair procedure earlier this year. I was running late so was booking it to get there on time. I made it on time so I could sit in the waiting room for 25 minutes. Then after getting through the preliminaries, I sat in another waiting room for 10 minutes before I got to the exam room, where I sat for another 15 minutes. Also driving just after you had your eyes dilated and it is snowing is fun.

8. Minnesota Vikings (9-2)(Last week: 32)
DVOA
OFF. EPA/DRIVE
DEF. EPA/DRIVE
MIN220.01 (18)-0.11 (19)
The Vikings’ 27th-ranked pass defense by DVOA made Patriots quarterback Mac Jones look better than he has all season during the Thanksgiving prime-time game. No matter, because Minnesota has Justin Jefferson, who somehow passed Randy Moss for the most receiving yards in any player’s first three seasons in the league. Kirk Cousins rebounded from his first-half interception to fire the ball into tight windows against a good Patriots defense.
Even at 9-2, though, the objective measures still doubt the Vikings. They open as just three-point favorites at home for this week’s game against Mike White and the Jets.

Again, dont shoot the messenger. Just posting things from the interwebs that I find interesting.

Flawed Postseason Contenders7. Minnesota Vikings (9-2 | last week: 8)Minnesota beat the Patriots on Thanksgiving night, but a national audience got to see what is potentially a fatal flaw—a porous pass defense that allowed Pats QB Mac Jones, who entered Week 12 ranked 33rd in EPA per dropback, to throw for a career-high 382 passing yards, along with two touchdowns. Minnesota currently ranks last in passing yards allowed per attempt and 31st in completion percentage allowed—and that puts Kirk Cousins and the Vikings offense in a very difficult spot week after week.

Agreed. I am also worried about getting out muscled by more physical teams, has been this teams weakness for a decade and it still is this season. Ala Cowboys and 49ers. I’d rather play Philly again than either of those teams in the play offs. Their Defenses will feast on us and our current defense will not hold up.

What was interesting during the Dallas game is it seems both teams has the same gameplan which was to establish the run… we couldn’t and they sure did. We need to pass to open up the run rather than the other way around. Well maybe if Darrisaw was fully healthy that would have helped. Not sure, but we can’t think we are the team to pound teams into submission.

We need to pass to open up the run rather than the other way around.

I have been saying this for 2 years now! I get, an established run really helps the play action pass, but we seem to do less of that this year anyway. Establish the pass, get the LBs holding back a bit, then move to the run? But what do I know

You can be a run first offense if you’re build to be a run first offense… we are not built that way. We have so many weapons in the passing game and a OL built on getting to the 2nd level but struggles bigly with big physical DLs.

The gameplans were not the same, The Vikings were running the well but throwing much more than Dallas, their gameplan sucked and called for a bunch of deep drops on throws. Several times the Vikings had 3rd and 3 or less and passed instead of running when they were getting 5 yards a carry, like the FG drive early in the game. Cook gets 8 yards on 1st and then two consecutive incompletions. Dallas did not fuck around throwing on those 3rd and shorts and converted a ton running the ball. My guess is if they play again the Vikings gameplan is to actually run the ball.

You are correct on that, the Vikings were running effectively but didn’t run nearly as much as Dallas, I want to say Dallas had like 25 more attempts than the Vikings, part of that was the game got out of hand but even in the first half MN was throwing more than running despite success on the ground and zero success throwing.

Teams defensive plans for the last few years are to stack the box and dare us to pass.
100% agree that we generally have been put into the spot where we have to pass to open up the run.
I have really liked the games where Kirk is calling plays at the line depending on the defense. We’ve had some good success with this.

The Pats game we had some issues running the ball. IIRC, we had slightly less than 30 carries for 55ish yards. I think we averaged less than 2 per carry. I don’t think anyone ran for more than 6 yards too. But our overall play selection was about 60% pass and 40 run, which seems to be the sweet spot these days.

Yesterday was my lucky day. I had to return some boots that were too large to Amerzon, I had a choice between dropping at the UPS service center in town or paying $8 for the UPS driver to pick it up at whatever random time he came to the shouse. My wife and stepdaughter thought I was nuts for not paying the $8, “that service center is a nightmare, you’ll be there for an hour”. Drove the whopping three miles on the interstate to get to the UPS center, walked in the door, no one but a worker there, takes my package and scans it and hands me a receipt. 30 seconds. SKOL!

I think different tools have different levels of danger and should be handled/regulated accordingly.

If you can clearly see the effect of a tool on society as a whole and you fail to take action to limit the negative effects, that’s a part of the problem that the individual person isn’t responsible for. Just saying it’s not a situation where you are only allowed to blame 1 thing.

IIRC it was the immediate trolling on the GDT that started this off. And it was trolling after a win. And not a few hours or days after, but immediately after. So instead of celebrating a hard-fought victory it devolved into those two taking turns pissing in everyone’s Cheerios. Certainly feels as if those two aren’t Vikings fans – and I’m not saying that because they were critical. I’m saying that because they were critical IMMEDIATELY after a win and it feels like they’re very much enjoying the losses. I don’t get that. Is it because they’ve been lifelong ‘fans’ for a 125 years and they think they’re entitled to a SB win? The universe owes us nothing and it’s unfolding exactly as it should.

People don’t understand that both sides have freedoms. It’s like when someone says something inflammatory that loses the company they are working for a lot of money and they get fried and people go, “THE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH!” You are right, they had every right to say what they said and no one is arguing that… The company also has the right to protect their business and bottom line. Here’s my personal analogy, FWIW.

I liken message boards, like Skoloholics, to a never ending house party, where the owner, in this case Brad (you, obviously) and his team, have put out an open invitation for anyone to attend.

Over time, the crowd grows because they throw a mean party but there’s one or two guests, that every time they show up, shit on the floor, piss in the yard and go out of their way to upset many (most?) of the other guests. Sure, they have a few supporters in the crowd but as their behavior gets worse, some of the “good guests” stop showing up and any new guests barely get inside the door before they turn around and leave.

The owner repeatedly and respectfully asks them to adjust their behavior, because he’s a welcoming guy and wants to continue his “open invitation” approach to his parties. And he’s also sensitive to the fact that some of his friends won’t attend the party if he stops letting these guys into his house (which is insane to me because who enables others to shit/piss on their friend’s property?).

But despite these attempts, they keep shitting and pissing, shitting and pissing (all the while denying that they’re shitting and pissing, even though they and every other guest knows damn well they are because they do it in front of everyone) and the owner is left to clean up their mess as his house parties begin to stagnate and decline.

So, what does the owner do? What would you do if it were your house?

When he woke up we made him clean the shit.

Only other option is banning. I do remember the auto mod, he would be the first person to post on the daily thread by it didn’t show up on the thread until the afternoon. If I were an owner or site administrator, which I would never have interest in, and users’ conduct was retarding site traffic and revenue growth they’d be banned immediately, but I have a very money grubbing attitude when it comes to such things.

Mine’s a 2016 but I’ve seen some things that they extended the warranty on the DEF system because of issues. The only problem I’ve seen is that what I have found says 10 years/120,000 miles and I am at 124,000 miles so I am likely relying on the extended warranty I purchased or forking out some cash.

Thought of you freeze while I was patting my back on Saturday. The snow blade I have on my Polaris Ranger (not to be confused with my Ford Ranger which is banished to the back of the shop) wouldn’t angle side to side with the power joystick thingy, would only move up and down. I did some fancy diagnostics with a multimeter (I struggle with those things) and realized power was getting to the ram thingy that pivots the blade. Ordered a new ram thingy, showed up last week. I told my wife it should only take a few minutes – most of my time was spent figuring out how to reverse engineer the install process. Loosened some bolts on the blade springs, pulled two cotter pins, yanked on the top of the blade for all I was worth (like lifting the bar on a bench press) while my wife popped the retaining pins out, installed the new ram, plugged it into the vehicle power, and voila, it worked!

Yup, lots of OEMs in all industries are doing this. You used to be able to replace phone batteries to, and now it’s actually impossible.

Now that makes me think, I bet a lot of the people who are into or getting into repair/restoration on older stuff are doing it just because you can actually work on that kind of stuff.

BTW I drove a RWD 1980 4 cyl Mustang 120 miles between Edmonton and Wainwright in a few too many snow and ice storms…plus one of my two girlfriends I dated for 4 years in college had a 5.0 Mustang…standard transmission…she didn’t even try driving it in snow, left it to me. But that Ranger is a certain kind of special…even with trac control and VSC it is a nightmare. I’m with Brad, 18 gram rear end and like a 4.35:1 rear diff.

I’d say that’s an upgrade from the Ranger as far as driving in the Winter. When I was in HS I drove a RWD f-150 with the standard H, or 3 on the tree as some call it, manual transmission. Later I drove a RWD Gran Torino with the 350 v-8 Windsor engine. Getting around in snow storms was the worst.

Zimmer made me loathe watching football the last two seasons. I can separate the person from the coach, so I wouldn’t actually spit on Zimmer in public or anything, but I watched less football in the last few years than ever. Even this year, I’ve only seen one complete Vikings game. Zimmer, plus all of the politics, really make me check out.

I am a doomer at heart, but I have some optimism that the Vikings are on a better track. I can see a possible playoff win. It depends how the chips fall. Lots of things can happen yet, and you never know how injuries can affect us and other teams. If the right variables come together, things can still get more interesting.

That too. It’s crazy to me how little the NFL understands how to train the mental side of kickers and how little effort most teams put into that.

Justin Tucker is by far the best kicker in the history of the NFL and he’s been pretty open about how he got to that point.

Even that 67 yarder he doinked on Sunday was essentially perfect. Started on the right hash and he kicked it straight to not make it any longer than he needed to by adding lateral distance.

…and this illustrates my nightmare come to life. FTP picking in the top 10, with a good QB class. Please, Odin, I beg you. Do not let them trip and fall into yet another HOF QB.

I think this QB class is not as good as everyone thinks, Ohio has yet to produce a good QB in forever and most completely suck so I doubt Stroud ends up being elite, he just shit the bed in a huge game against Michigan. The kid from Alabama is a stick and short and runs a lot, I don’t see him playing 17 games a season. Levis from Kentucky is inconsistent but has size, arm talent, and running ability, closest thing to a Josh Allen type in the draft. The super awesome allegedly generational QB group from 2020 is pretty underwhelming, Lawrence looks much improved this year and like he’ll be good, but not super close to the highest graded QB since Luck that he’s supposed to be. Wilson just got benched because he sucks, Lance sucked before getting injured. Fields is a running back playing QB because he sucks throwing and of course got injured. Jones is pretty meh, though he did just drop about 400 yards on the terrible Vikings secondary.
