Wow, what a day yesterday! The Vikings front office is taking some major steps in the right direction, as they are finally making some moves that were honestly years overdue in some cases. It’s hard to see our favorite players being released or waived, or potentially traded. I get it. We also have to face the facts that the team was aging, and the defense was horrible. There will be growing pains, as there always is with young talent, but it will be exciting to see a defensive unit who can keep up with opposing offenses. Last year, the Vikings defense was simply overmatched and overcoached. Those days should be over. Let’s hope!

Minnesota Vikings News:

The Vikings released Cam Dantzler yesterday.

Is Harrison Smith the next domino to fall?

Adam Thielen was also released yesterday. All the best to Adam and his family, he’s been a treat to cheer for this past decade.

WR Odell Beckham held a workout in Arizona for numerous teams, per NFL.com. The Vikings were one of the teams in attendance.

Way too much football talk today. My wife had a school trip this weekend so I made goulash. She won’t eat it, so I make it when she is away.

Hamburger, elbow macaroni, dark red kidney beans, fire roasted diced tomatoes, onion and tomato sauce. Seasoned with seasoned salt, black pepper, chili pepper and garlic powder. I ate it for 3 meals this weekend. Yum.

Cousins has bet on himself his whole career. Bruce Allen low-balled him twice, and he played on the franchise tag twice. He played well and put up big numbers. Allen couldn’t afford to franchise him a third time and had to let Cousins walk. KAM wants a contract where the team is in control. We’ll see what happens. Remember, most of what you hear from “sources” is just a load of crap.

I am the source.

I think it makes a ton of sense for all parties involved.

kirk could sign a huge deal with the Jets on a team that’s real close except at QB.

he’s not a douche like Rodgers.

he’d be going to the AFC.

only so much time left in his career and i cant imagine hed want to hang out for a rebuild if thats what they are doing.

It’s true all of this could change in an instant once FA starts playing out. It does sound like through conversations with other teams gm’s, likely at the combine, KAM got a lay of the land and realizes best course of action is to purge assets, get the cap straight and plan for the future.

So I shot 87 today (44-43). The course was not in great shape as I had been told. I hit the ball solid, kept it in play but on the first hole I had a double because I hit a nice drive that ended up in a hidden bunker off the tee. The two guys I played with had never played the course before, so none of knew it was there. The ball was half plugged. Just had to take a sand wedge and advance it about 20 yards. Hit my third on the green and rolled off the back side of the green. Hit a decent chip but missed the 6 footer for bogey. C’est la vie. I DID have a great moment on a 130 yard par 3 with an island green. Pin was tucked down in front about 5 feet on the green and about 15 feet from the water. Hit a great shot to 15 feet and rolled in the birdie. Meanwhile my playing partners went through 3 balls each and dumped them all in the water.

I was happy with it. The course was tricked up pretty good. Several holes had a big deep bunker directly in front of the green, and the pin tucked behind them. Water in play left and right on a number of fairways too. Just super demanding from an accuracy perspective. I laid up on 175 yard par 3. That’s a 5 wood or 3 wood for me. The green was surrounded by woods. I hit a 6 iron off the tee about 135 yards, pitched a sand wedge to about 20 feet, and two putted for bogey. Meanwhile my playing partners each hit balls off the tee into the woods and ended up with doubles.

Gotta respect them not just bending over for Cousins. Seems Kirk and his agent are playing hardball in negotiations. Damn that agent is a ball busting tight son of a bitch. Let Kirk go..hell trade him now for a 1st would be even better. We would be in the drivers seat in 24 with cap space.

I wouldnt offer it to him regardless.

There is 0 benefit to doing so.

If they push all the chips in to win in ’23 and makes some moves and he doesn’t lead them there… then don’t re-sign him.

If you want a new qb then again.. don’t re-sign.

If he DOES make it to a SB or have an MVP year… pay the man his 3 year fully guaranteed deal he wants.

it isn’t a hard concept and everyone is freaking out over nothing.

Thats where most of us differ from you is that you’re a Cousins fan and we’re Vikings fans.

Watching the spielman era for the last….15ish years keep trying the same stupid shit over and over again and expecting a different result got real old. And then KAM did basically the same thing last year.

Now, they’re shedding old contracts and starting anew.

What remains to be seen if its just cap clearing so they can bring in better fitting, younger talent that fits what they want to do…or if its a tear it down rebuild.

You don’t do a tear it down rebuild and pay a WR 30m+

It leaves a lot to be decided in the next few days and thats what’s exciting. It can go both ways.

Whether they build a great team once they have money is another thing all together.

You’ve been very vocal and condescending regarding the moves of the FO from the get go but as more moves happen its showing that there is a bigger picture involved. Instead oflooking at each move individually, when you start to pile them up together you get a better look at the bigger picture.

You became a Vikings fan because of Kirk correct? That was all I said in regards to Cousins and by that I meant we are fans of the team as a whole and not just one player where you’re a fan of the player and by extension the team.

Not knocking you but theres a reason we see some of this stuff differently.

Difference is… Rick had 15 years and KAM is in year 2 and making moves in a positive direction.

I like McIntosh from GA and Roschon Johnson from Texas.

Those two are my favorite.

I think Chandler may be the “Cook” replacement due to the very similar size but we need a back who can punch it through and in on 3rd and short or goal.

Johnson is a bigger back who behind Bijan hasn’t had much use through college and should have very fresh legs.
I have a video on that pre free agency plan I did yesterday.

Makes sense. I just want KAM to be sensible in this draft. Even with our lack of picks we can easily come out with a great haul he has patience and doesn’t try to be a shaker & mover like he was last year.

I like this draft a lot. Would go a long way to addressing our needs and building for the future.

And yet according to NOAA, the earth has actually cooled slightly since its high in 2016. This despite roughly 450 billion metric tons of CO2 entering the atmosphere during that time..I don’t know what to make of that because I am just a rube from North Dakota….BUT SHUT UP and DON”T QUESTION the SCIENCE YOU SCIENCE DENIER. The concern with CO2 is “it’s a greenhouse gas”. CO2 does get scrubbed from the atmosphere though by forests. Also we have deployed hundreds of thousands of CO2 scrubbers around the world to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. Finally you might note that 95% of all greenhouse gases in our atmosphere are naturally occurring water vapor, i.e. clouds. Of that remaining 5%, only 2% is made up of CO2. Thus the total atmospheric load from CO2 is .1%. This fact has been known for decades, but here we are being told by a child that the world is going to end and we’re taxing people who own cows for their ethane emissions.

I remember the Bud Grant show as a kid. (Early teens)
I remember KSTP’s Tom Ryther hosting the show.
Grants signature features were the coaches clicker and “no real injuries other than the standard bumps and bruises” He would usually have one player come on as a guest at some point. Here is a clip from a show with Jim Marshall.

Chris Reed already agreed to a renegotiated deal for 2023 that reduces his cap charge by about $1M. So currently it looks like the Vikes are at – $5.6M in cap compliance.

Also post 1 June cut for H. Smith saves $15.2M against the cap.

Getting in cap compliance is basically done…they’re just at the stage of figuring out who wants to agree to stay at the amount they’re willing to pay. My guess Harrison walks, knows the run is over time for a change. I’d get rid of Hicks, extend O’Neal / Cousins / Hock, cut Cook and try and trade Z’Darius.

That would put us around $25 in the black not including what Cousins and O’Neils restructures would add.

Sign Bradbury, Hargrave and Edmonds in FA.

Me too. The run it back overhaul is two years late already the time is now. Harrison needs to move on, send Hicks packing, Ezra sucks at pass blocking theres $3 mill we can realize, are we really believing Ham’s $3.8 mill is worth it??? No. Trade Zadarius, Trade or release Cook, extend Kirkanator and potato and we can go on a serious shopping spree add some legit team improvers and be flush with cap space in 24.

There’s some other guys like Mundt, Nwangwu, Dye, and Bynum who have almost no dead cap if cut but over a mil in savings if thats what they feel is necessary.

Its going to be interesting next couple of days to see who gets the axe and who doesn’t.

Lots of TE’s in this draft…Wang is a one trick pony. Is Dye ready for the big time? And Bynum has been meh. Nothing crazy to write home about with plenty of mistakes on tape.

Are any of those guys people you’re itching to sign after their contracts are up this season?

There’s always a question if a player was used to his potential, or forced to play in a scheme that doesn’t highlight his skillset. Bynum signed a 4 year, $4,197,812 contract, including a $717,812 signing bonus, $717,812 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,049,453. In 2023, Bynum will earn a base salary of $940,000, while carrying a cap hit of $1,119,453 and a dead cap value of $358,906. He’s cheap and not terrible.

Correct, but the question is are these guys that the new regime wants to keep around as depth or do they have others in mind to bring in.

How in the world can we question if KJ Osborne is worth $2.8 this year? We should probably extend him tbh.

He’s played all 17 games each of the past two seasons.
50 rec then 60 rec the past two seasons.
12 td’s total the past two season and more than a few game winning td’s so he’s clutch.

I don’t know what’s not to like about this guy and why you wouldn’t expand his role. He absolutely is a solid #2 WR.

Yes, it’s Bynum’s rookie deal. Flores is coming in and maybe there was an understanding (speculation here) that the front office was going to dump the older, more expensive players so Flores would be more or less starting from scratch. Hitman is only a $3.9M cap hit and saves $15.2M against the cap in a post June first release. That’s a strong negotiating position for the team to be in with him. It’s downright attractive to the team. Flores can almost name his price if he thinks H. Smith fits his vision for this defense.

I’m lucky that I read Jack Nicklaus’ book “Golf My Way” when I first started playing. There was a passage early in the book where Jack said as a youth he was convinced if he practiced long enough and hard enough he could perfect a completely repeatable swing. After 30 years he said he realized he was wrong. Something like that. I also watched Jack miss a two foot putt that would have tied him with Lee Trevino to win a tournament. He missed it and I thought to myself “I could do that”.

True. Getting rid of folks past their prime but still very talented is one thing. Finding great talent to replace them is another. When people say “just get rid of him and bring in someone else” they’re being too simple.

He is a good QB. I think he can win a Super Bowl. I also know he cannot do it with a 31st rank defense or an IOL that lets pressure in like wind through a screen door.

I would not touch his deal. The ramifications of writing a new on next year vs. this year dont change very much by waiting. He’s not taking discounts and he’s not signing long term. Soo lets see how big of a step or leap happens in year 2 of KO as HC/OC.

This is a practical and prudent move in my opinion Mick. The Bucs are paying Brady $35M this year. Pretty big cap hit for a guy who’s not playing for you anymore. They were $55M in the hole to start the year, not sure where they are now but that $35M hit is significant.

What is? To redo his deal this year? Or to let it sit?

Regardless, I would say MN is the #1 spot Kirk wants to be. SO what does waiting a year matter unless they feel they absolutely need the cap space. His dead money for next year remains the same and will be factored into a new deal if that is the route that both parties want to go down.

His cap number is 12.5m next year for not being on the team.

I see no reason to inflate it.

And if he is there guy…which I’m assuming he will be… its easy enough to work into a deal.

I would see them work out an extension if they wanted to have control over trading him more than if they were just going to let his contract expire.

Well KAM mentioned he wanted a contract with “flexibility” in it. I assume that’s what they mean. I think this is practical from a team business perspective.

Sorry DE, I have spelled this out many times and yet you insist that the Redskins were/are a .500 team without Cousins. That is an absolute lie. The Redskins were 7-25 the two years before Cousins replaced RGIII as the starter in 2015. .500 my ass. Since Cousins left they are 32-49-1. So stop with the false narrative. BTW all the QB’s the Redskins have used to replace Cousins over the last 5 seasons have thrown 95 TD’s while Cousins has thrown 153. The fact is Cousins is way better than you profess. Way better.

I posted some winning % comparisons the other day that showed DE the same thing (my data comparison was a little different than yours but essentially supported the same conclusion). I thought about reposting the numbers but realized he’s either willfully blind, too stupid to understand real data or both. So it’s a waste of time trying to educate him with facts.

I’m neither a Kirk lover or hater…I’m somewhere in the middle. But it drives me nuts how so many people rely solely on their false perceptions to justify their position. If you want to love him or hate him, there’s enough factual support to debate either way without making shit up. It’s gotten really old.

No doubt about. I don’t know what exactly the end goal is for the KAM regime other than win championships.

How much depth do you need? Do I need to do a whole article on it or can we just discuss possibilities?

Trading Cook, Hunter, and Z along with cutting Harry and restructuring O’Neill create 30m in cap space in 2023. 184m in 2024.

Thats more then enough flexibility to play in UFA and get the guys THEY want to bring in.

Would them gretting a Hargrove, Dre’mont Jones, or Payne be big addtions in the positive?

How about adding a guy like Shaw Lawson on the Edge?

LBs like Pratt or Edmunds?

Some CB Help like Ya-Sin or Sutton?

All of this is possible by freeing up the caps space and signing guys to better deals than what the last regime did struggling to hold on to relevance with that same old roster. We have seen the ceiling of those guys and on offense it is MUCH higher than D.

QB is one of the hardest positions to get someone good at so using the redskins and QB is kind of lame. I’m ok with our current QB

Same as every year.

Of course. Optimism ifs fine.

Some seem to get a little too enthusiastic though, so I say let´s wait a bit longer before we crown our new, improved, collaborative and inclusive dynamic duo´s asses as our purple saviors. Nobody can know if the moves they are making will be “the right ones”.

Edit: I´m in full on DOOMER mode, obviously.

You have to go buy new jersey’s. I get it.

Would have me bummed out too probably but I have never owned a jersey. I know they are not cheap.

Who ya going to pick now?

That too, but I won´t be buying a new one anytime soon. If I would it would be a Hock jersey, probably.

But it´s not about having to buy new jerseys as you very well know.

My point was that any decision will take time to see if it comes to fruition. Just because you don’t repeat the past doesn’t mean you made the right decision. I’m not pounding the table either way on their decisions, I’m just saying that we need to wait and see.

I think the Vikings may try and flip Hunter before the draft as well.

He’s their most valuable piece.. and he’s able to bring a similar return to Chubb.

Guy would need a new deal but they should be able to get another 1st for him.

What they do with that first is the question…do they use it to move up? OR

Use it to restock the defense.

They aren’t dumping both Z and Hunter. If they trade Hunter they’ll keep Z or vice versa

Why not both?

Z has been here 1 year and his deal is reasonable even if he doesn’t like it.

Hunter will more than likely not play under his current deal. And should fetch a 1st rd pick in a trade… something this team needs.

Z could also get a 3rd. Lots of possibilities especially if Flores is trying to rebuild/reshape the defense.

We’re just starting to get a picture now of a plan. Need some more moves to see where they really want to go in ‘23.

maybe that also means Flores signed up for 2 years minimum and some 3rd rd racial comp picks coming our way in the future.

lots of work left to be done. That’s for sure.

he thinks the new Vikings FO didn´t play fair with him

That certainly seems to be the case based on his comments and, in particular, the social media rants by his wife. He obviously has more “behind the scenes” insight into his perceived role (or lack thereof) this past season but the bottom line is that he had 107 targets which puts him in a group of about 6 receivers that had between 107-109 targets, which is about 30th in the league. To me, that seems about right for a WR #2. Especially one that’s lost much of his ability to gain separation.

AT was a RZ monsther the last few years… and with Hock.. I dont think they need two guys who do that especially when 1 of them is at 19m/year.

Sure, AT is from MN and thats cool and all but he doesn’t own MN.

Kind of being a little bitch if you ask me.

I agree the addition/emergence of Hock probably significantly shifted the landscape for AT. He’s the best receiving tight end the Vikings have had during AT’s tenure, and likely the biggest reason AT apparently feels he wasn’t given the “…chance or opportunities to prove himself”.

That said, entering the season it’s not like the front office had already locked in the trade for Hock and, given that opportunity, were they not supposed to make that move to improve the team just so they could give AT more attention?

I agree he (and his wife, especially) are being bitchy about the whole thing. He was given a chance to live out a dream, and deservedly became a local legend who got paid fairly during his prime. He’s got nothing to complain about. Ultimately, I think his ego is writing checks his body can no longer cash. Glad he’s gone.

Oh my bad. his whining must have clouded my judgemnt.

I think he was very well taken care of. Rick really had no reason to rewrite his deal like he did.. and if he didn’t he probably would’ve been gone a few years ago because he didn have such a huge dead cap hit.
