The snow is still flying up here in the Bismarck area, and it sounds like Mick & the gang up in Duluth are getting hit even harder than we are. I’m very grateful to Redline Motorsports in Bismarck for getting my snowblower repaired quickly, I gave it a workout yesterday and again today. Good times!
Tomorrow is football day already! The Colts travel to Minneapolis to take on the Vikings tomorrow, kickoff is at noon, and the game will be aired on the NFL Network. I hope the Vikings can respond well to Sunday’s loss as well as they’ve responded to their other two losses this season: by getting a win to wash off the stench of the loss. On paper, the Vikings SHOULD beat the Colts. One thing we Vikings fans know is to NEVER be too confident heading into a game, so I won’t be comfortable until the final gun sounds. One more day. Seems like every case I’ve seen (not specifically mini M&Ms tube) the patient has waited a little too long to seek medical care.

This tree at the end of our driveway has been shedding branches since the heavy snow hit. I moved branches off from the driveway 3 time yesterday (plus a large one off the road) before we headed to our DIL’s nursing graduation. Then when we got home at midnight we had to move a couple of more to get in the driveway.
My inappropriate joke was that if this tree keeps shedding branches at this rate it will be more nude than a showgirl in Vegas. I think I’ve been watching to much CSI.
Snowmeggon claims another victim in my yard. This one took out the power line between us and our neighbor. That happened sometime in the middle of the night and they are still without power.

Yes we do. The power line snapped after the power pole in our yard, so the power to our house is fine. The neighbor figures that it will be awhile before the power company comes out to fix it because they are the very last residence on this line. The next house up the hill gets power from a different company.

Our power company is a coop and they are very good about getting out and getting power back quickly. However there are about 400 other families without power in our relatively small service area. They are going to be busy today.
When I lived in the Seattle area, our house was toward the top of a large hill and it seemed like every November/early December we would get these storms with 70-80 mph straight-winds that would knock down pine trees all over the place due to their shallow roots and soft soil (from all the constant precipitation in the area).
It wasn’t uncommon for us to lose power for a week or more after these storms. Fortunately, we had a good generator (not whole house but enough power to run essentials), but it still sucked.
Like a chicken coop? No wonder you are having problems.

Your hashtag reminded me of a funny (I think) story about my personal indoctrination into fan blogs. Like many around here, I started on the DN several years ago and initially focused on the articles. I eventually started checking out the OT and pretty quickly jumped from lurker to commenter (this was around 2015/2016, IIRC).
A week or so into my experience, I dropped in on the OT and see all these people commenting about “Lifer” and I thought, “wow, that didn’t take me long to become part of the group”. And then I realized, they weren’t talking about me.
Some time later, same thing happens with all these people talking about “Skolly” and I’m like, “yes, now I’m finally part of the ‘in crowd'”, until I realize they’re talking about Skoldiers.
It was at this point I really wished I would have spent more time lurking before picking my user name, because I’ll never have a nickname and will live in the shadows of Skolly and Lifer for eternity.

My family played a new game last night called Mind the Gap. It’s basically a trivia game with categories similar to Trivial Pursuit but they’re organized by different generations (i.e. Boomer, Gen X, Gen Y and Millennial). It was pretty fun.

Tuck is six and a half. I think they’ll get along great. Tuck has been heavily socialized in doggie daycare and gets along with other dogs very well. Kane lived with another dog, a Golden. They wanted us to take both Kane and “Tommy” but the Golden being more mellow is an easier adoption than the ball of energy Kane. Plus I love chocos, am used to the daily coat care, which with Goldens is a next level process.
Yeah, actually doing coat care on a golden is lots more work.
Sounds like it will work great! I love chocos, neighbor growing up had one – the sweetest dog I’ve ever known.

Doctor called on Wednesday. Final pathology report.
Small amount of minimally invasive endometrial adenocarcinoma, no invasion beyond the muscularis mucosae. Ovaries were normal and sentinel pelvic lymph nodes were negative for metastatic disease.
TL;DR version my wife’s harvesting of female bits was curative, and no further therapy such as chemo or radiation is needed.

The one point I remember most was that he pointed out a man could rape and murder a 12 year old who was a devoted Hindu, Muslim etc., and she would burn for eternity in a lake of fire.
But this rapist could repent on his deathbed and spend eternity in heaven.
He found no love or justice in the fact that a 12 year old would burn just because she was born into the wrong culture.
Basically, he pointed out that you better hope your parents indoctrinated you into the right religion, or you were going to burn….and where is the justice and love in that?

Someone called a gay guy a groomer.
He pointed out that they were the ones that forced their children to go to church, threaten them with hell, and shame them if they strayed from their religion.
Then he pointed out the outrage that would happen if gay people started telling children that they would burn in hell if they didn’t turn gay, and asking who the groomers were.
Could you imagine if gay made a church, and started teaching kids this? Yeah.
One thing that’s always left me confused is that (sometimes) with Christianity if you don’t believe in Jesus it doesn’t matter what you do – you’re going to hell.
So, a mass murderer could repent before dying and he’s all good but if I live a life devoted to the Golden Rule and rest of the influence teachings of the Bible but don’t believe in Jesus I’m out? Something there doesn’t add up for me. Be a good person, help others, improve the life around you should be far more important than any other aspect with a truly benevolent God.
You are lumping too many beliefs into one pot. There is just as much if not more variance within “Christianity” as there is between Christianity and say Muslims. Compare the beliefs of Catholics to those of Baptists or Mormons for example. Too many things are assumed by the uneducated/unfamiliar and to lump all Christians into the same pot will lead to more confusion than understanding.
That’s why I put ‘sometimes’ in there. And you’re skirting around the point.
Is believing in Jesus more important than living a good life?
truly believing in Jesus, and having a relationship with Him would make you live a good life because we, as believers, are called to be like Christ, so our life, best we can, would represent Him.
it’s called the process of sanctification. we are being sanctified our entire life.
Ok, so say there are two people who live identical ‘good’ lives as best they can (outside of going to church/praying).
One of them believes, one of them doesn’t.
Does the belief matter at the end? If so, why?
And I am aware that this isn’t a flawless hypothetical because someone who goes to church and is involved would have access to different kinds of good works/volunteering, but I just want to drill down on the specific point of whether or not truly believing matters if you were to follow Jesus’ teachings when it comes to treatment of others – the things someone is in control of in our world.
If you truly follow, your actions will show it. If you say you believe, but continue to be a horrible person, I doubt you truly believe.
If that makes sense.
Right. I get that, and I think many many people are simply hiding behind Christianity to cover up their actions.
But I am curious what happens to a person that lives a life as if they follow His teachings but do not believe. Is that person not worthy of anything, even if they lived such a life?
Good question, one I have pondered myself.

The strength of my faith has changed many times.
I’ve ultimately just settled on that I believe because I want to, and it is comforting.
I also realized also that different churches have completely different takes on this.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

“Words without deeds are dead”, at least what I was taught. This is what I mean on the difference of some Christian religions. To an extent some believe that as long as you proclaim that you believe in God/Jesus you are good to go. The road to heaven is narrow.
That reminds me of a guy I met once. For all of their extensive rules and disqualifications the Mormon church seems to have a bit of a double standard if you or your family are a prominent member of the church. I lived in an area that was about 50/50 Catholic/Mormon for awhile. My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) lived with me and we were apparently some of the worst people because of it as relayed to me by a coworker. I end up meeting a rancher’s kid (in his 50s or so at the time). Turns out he murdered multiple people in some pretty gruesome ways, but his family was pretty high in the Mormon church so all was forgiven.
A friend of mine said something similar when we were freshmen in college and it gave me this question I have not been able to answer.
Quite true. I’m not a huge fan of churches and denominations, although I am a devoted Christian. When the Bible speaks of the church, it isn’t speaking of a brick and mortar building, it’s speaking of Christianity.
My mom is Catholic and my Dad goes to an ELCA church.
I specifically asked our priest if non-catholics could be saved.
I was told that yes, but that it was not for sure.
I’m not sure if that’s official catholic policy, but I liked the teachings of the ELCA church.
I was the same, mom was Catholic & dad was Lutheran. I miss the potlucks.
As far as Christian religions go, Lutherans and Catholics are some of the closest. I know a lot of Lutherans that turned Catholic. Pretty much all of what the Lutherans had issues with when they split from the Catholic church is non-existent or a moot point now. I don’t remember the specifics anymore but I do remember learning about it.
If I go to my Mom’s church, I’m not allowed communion by the Catholics.
At the ELCA church I could go through the line twice.

That’s because of the difference in belief of what communion is. If you did go to communion, nobody would know but you and your mom but that’s a different story. Faith then clothes a person in Christ’s righteousness so they can exist in God’s presence. If a person tries to stand before an all-powerful, perfectly holy God based on their own works, it won’t work. That person would have to have never lied, never stole, never committed adultery even in their thoughts once in their life, not have one single sin on their record.

Again, this is basically creating a strawman Christian God. This strawman Christian God says if a person does nice things God should be merciful to that person. That is not a true representation of Christianity’s God.

No, I’m not atheist, I grew up catholic but quit in HS, then was not involved in anything for like 20 years before I met my wife, we went to a Pentecostal church for quite a while, but now go to a Baptist church. I must be missing something after reading it though because I just don’t see what’s worth thinking about, and I don’t know why an atheist even cares.

I even had to write down the names of the people in my house on a paper, laminate it, and tape it inside the mailbox for the dumb fuck but of course he just keeps putting their stuff in there and some of it is important, like W-2s. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for about 3 years because the previous owners have the same last name as I and my family but at this point I’m pretty sure this guy is just fucking with me.

I love my Cub Cadet. Deere is solid, too. Toro is also acceptable.
My first snowblower was a toro, it was solid but it was a single stage. We have an ariens brand one at work and it seems pretty good, though I’ve been researching those big brushroll type snowblowers and might get one for work.
This Cub Cadet works great for our place. Anything more and I’d get a bigger machine. I think this one cuts a 28 inch swath & is a 2 stage. It’ll fling the snow about 40 feet.
Just got a two stage poulan pro.

Whew boy….Niners are legit by far the best team I’ve seem easily the best defense and it’s not really close. A month ago we were talking about how dynamic their offense is with CMC and thats not even the strength of their team, the defense is by far. Purdy looks fantastic, calm composed and in no way is the offense or moment to big for him he’s dictating to defenses with ease. Vikings in no way are beating this team.
So you look at the NFC contenders, Philly, Dallas, Niners…we’ll face minimally one of them if not two and there just isn’t a way unless it’s Dallas and we somehow see Niners and Philly lose we get through that gauntlet.
