I TOLD you that we’d know about Donatell by Friday! Actually, that was just a bad joke that turned out to be correct, but I’ll take it. I had a feeling that this was going to happen, the writing was on the wall. I always feel bad when someone gets fired. I’m sure the decision was difficult, but for many reasons, this seems to be the right move. Donatell inherited a poor defense, but even though they had fairly good luck with injuries, he was not able to generate improvement in the defense as the year progressed. As a matter of fact, the defense seemed to worsen throughout the year, and we all know how poorly they played in the playoffs. That playoff performance, in my opinion, was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Regardless, now we can begin to discuss potential defensive coordinator candidates. The most logical starting place is Mike Pettine, who is currently on staff, but you never know, they may clean house altogether.

“Today I informed Ed Donatell we will be going in a different direction at defensive coordinator in 2023. While this was a difficult decision because of the tremendous respect I have for Ed as a person and a coach, I believe it is the right move for the future of our football team.
“I want to thank Ed for his commitment to the Vikings this past season, for the positive impact he had on our players and coaches and for his role in helping me as a first-year head coach lay this foundation. We all wish Ed and his wife, Shari, only the best in the future.
“We will immediately begin our search to fill this critical role as we continue to build a championship standard for the Minnesota Vikings.”

He said in his police interview that they did firearm safety training for the movie. The firearm safety person also told police that Baldwin was very distracted and did not pay attention during the safety training (on his phone a lot).
The armourer is being charged with the same charge as Baldwin too. I think the actors are supposed to watch the armourer check the gun before handling it. As Producer, Badwin is responsible for the safety rules not being followed. I also read that it ticked off the prosecutors that Baldwin lied about not pulling the trigger.

Hard to say, probably not cheating but could be used to cheat…they could probably easily subsitute a marker thats maybe an 8th to a quarter inch think and the refs may not notice…and that probably would make a difference…not saying it has happened.

So, IF, and it’s a big IF, Kwesi extends Cousins and Jefferson, the Vikings will have about $65 million locked up in cap space out of the $225 team cap. That’s about 30% of the cap with 2 players. (I assume Cousins is a friendly $35m and Jefferson is $30)

Cleveland & Watson negotiated to choose to structure the contract that way. It helped Watson out since his suspension didn’t cost much, only lost a little bit of salary.

I think to add money to this year outside of signing bonus (and maybe that wouldn’t even count), you would have to void the current contract. Maybe that happens, but I’m pretty sure extension are just that typically, an extension of the contract under agreed to terms that begins at the conclusion of the current contract. They could give JJ a pretty fat deal and see no cap implications this year. Some extensions do rework the current terms, especially unguaranteed money to give the team more cap space, but there you are moving money around and its more of a renegotiated contract than what I would consider an outright extension.

I have read this in several different places.
JJ can re-negotiate his contract in 2023.
But I can’t find the NFL lingo to be 100% on this.
I guess it comes down to the semantics of re-negotiate, extend, etc.
Looking at a couple recent rookie deal extensions JJ would play on his current contracts base salary through year 5 I think. Here are a couple from the 2018 draft (side note- holy crap was that a horrible first round. These are almost the only players that have received extensions from the team that drafted them.)
Josh Allen for example was drafted in 2018. He signed an extension in 2022 (year 5 of his rookie deal). His base salary was $4 million this year but the prorated signing bonus began. In 2023, his base salary bumps up to 27.5 mill.
Frank Ragnow’s current deal began in 2022 as well. His base salary was 2.7 mill and the proration of his $6 million signing bonus started.
Jaire Alexander signed an extension in 2022 with a $30 mill signing bonus that began prorating against the cap in 2022. His base salary remained $1 mill in 2022 and will only be $1.2 mill in 2023. In 2024 his base salary jumps to $16 mill. This one seems to be an outlier on the base salary side as there is also a $12 mill roster bonus they built in, likely to allow them to restructure some of that to signing bonus this year if so desired to gain some cap room.
I think the Vikings can exercise the 5th year option and then JJ’s base salary will remain $2.4 mill this year, whatever the rookie structure is next year and then his base salary and/or roster bonus will increase in 2025 as negotiated. Where he gains money now is in the signing bonus that will be prorated through the deal (I think there is a 5 year max on that, but I’m not 100% sure). If they’re smart they’ll put as much money as possible that isn’t signing bonus into roster bonus.

Basically Fangio style takes away the deep passes and makes you dink and dunk down the field. Plus, it allows you to stop the run with th 4 LBs that can run down to the play.

Donatell was very passive. Just sit back in zone and let the play develop around you. It doesn’t have to be that way.
You can have guys jump routes and attack in any scheme. One of the benefits of having two high safeties ins the CB can go for the pick knowing someone is behind if he misses.
So all is not lost.
