Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Jets Post-Game Wrap-Up

This game and last week’s game have some similarities. Strong start for the Vikings followed by costly turnovers and a stagnant offense which allowed the other team back into the game. The offense’s struggles wore on the defense, but they were strong enough to hold the lead, and secured the win once again via a turnover.

The Vikings offense did struggle, but we must not forget that they were playing against a very good defense. The Jets secondary is elite, and their defense overall is very good. Struggling against them is not optimal, but also not reason to panic. The Vikings committed some costly turnovers of their own that contributed to the “meltdown”, and the punt coverage unit did enough by itself to secure a loss for the team. Aaron Jones went down early, and the Vikings never really had a semblance of a running game. The passing game wasn’t a whole lot better. Let’s hope the Aaron Jones injury isn’t serious, but I have a bad feeling about it. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

The 2024 Vikings…..And Beyond

Getting out of that game with a win was an accomplishment. The Vikings are 5-0 and are the #1 or #2 team in the NFL, no question about it. This should be a fun day if you’re a Vikings fan, and I have a feeling that this season is going to be a very fun season of football for us. Even the future looks bright, as the team seems to have built a consistent winner & are being led by a young and talented coach who continues to get better at his job. The GM is also young, and after some first year mistakes, is becoming a very good general manager.

That being said, the offense can’t go to sleep for the last half of the football game. I hope that the coaching staff can figure out an answer to what the opposing defenses are throwing at them so that they can do a better job of building on a lead rather than just holding a lead.

The Vikings have the best record in the NFC at 5-0, are sitting alone atop the NFC North, which may be the best division in football, and are one of the best teams in football, if not the best team in football. The team is going into an early bye next week, and part of me wonders if Kwesi-Adofo Mensah will be busy behind the scenes trying to upgrade the inferior O-line. Oops, I meant interior O-line. Sorry. I hope the Jones injury isn’t serious, or he may be looking for a running back, although I think Adrian Peterson is currently available. We’ll see what happens. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!

For a long stretch, the “daily” thread would be full of the same 5-6 people arguing for or against Cousins. So we agreed that Tuesday has been deemed the only day we can discuss Kirk Cousins.

What in our history, especially recent history, makes you think politicians care about laws and rules? They have written vague pass the buck bills giving the administration agencies the power to allocate funds and write administrative rules that are treated as laws because there is a law that says such and such agency hereby has the power to make their own rules.

JRobert

I have hope that if Trump gets elected we will get back to being a normal democracy. President (chief executive) actually enforces the laws – not breaks them. The legislature rights laws and appropriates funding, and the judiciary determines the law.
This needs to start. For sure administrative nonelected agency heads should not be writing law thru regulation and spending non appropriated funds.

Why is everyone thinking that our run game went to crap just because Jones was out? I think it was a combination of lineman play (possibly getting tired) and playcalling (trying to run clock with a lead) versus just Jones being out. Chandler was getting blown up at or before line of scrimmage many plays. I think he’s about as good as Jones, he just needs to catch the ball on that toss. His 35+ yard run getting called back for the “illegal shift” which I didn’t see on replay I think was BS. He’s got the explosiveness.

Jones avoids a lot of that. There are a lot of times where it doesn’t look like there is anything there but he’ll find a crease and get 5 or 6.

One guy has never been good enough to be the starter and the other has made Pro Bowls, etc. It can’t simply be other factors when it starts immediately after he goes out. It’s not like Chandler has done anything prior to the Jones injury either. Does the O-line play worse for the plays that Chandler is out there so Jones can catch his breath?

Chandler does not have the patience or vision that Jones has. He ran right into his blockers several times when there was a hole opening to the right or left.

Chandler is about the same as Mattison, only a bit faster.

Because I played football at a high level (NAIA) I feel like I can offer an expert opinion…..there are several things that stand out to me regarding Jones vs. Chandler….

Jones has ELITE vision – understanding where a crease is developing before it develops…Chandler does not.

Jones has Above Average Balance and Strength – he can take a hit, maintain his balance and keep moving forward. Chandler is not above average.

Jones is an ELITE pass catcher out of the back field – you know it when you see it – the running backs that can effortlessly adjust to the ball in the air and consistently make the catches….Now, Chandler is no Adrian Peterson regarding the passing game – but he is not as good as Jones.

Chandler probably has higher end speed than Jones. I am not saying that Chandler can’t be an average NFL back…but Jones is clearly a step above.

That kid from Boise State is sure putting on a show so far this year. I think he’s at something like 90 carries for 1050 yards and 16 TDs in 16 quarters (he sat the second half of two of their 5 games so far due to them destroying the other team). Even if you chalk some of that up to playing lesser schools, I saw that the last 3 Heisman winning RBs, who also played crummy schools while also playing for powerhouse schools, had no where close to those stats.

I watched the replay of the fair catch interference by Evans, I still say the punt returner stuck his leg out at the last second to get hit by Evans. I don’t know if that would constitute a penalty on the returner, if the refs seen it, but it should be a fine, since he could have injured Evans.

Once I retired I took over the majority of the cooking we went from multiple fast food meals a week to a couple a month.

Cooking is a pretty healthy and money saving hobby.

Not saying I buy this but here’s the claim.
Someone who makes 25k has to spend every dime just to get by and thus entire income is taxed.
A guy making a million a year, need really only need to spend 100k to get by. thus 900k is not taxed. Now, even if the person spends another 400k on boats etc ( not required spending) they still are getting by with 500k untaxed.
That’s the claim.

But they could very well end up paying more on the sales tax than they did with income tax and all of it’s loopholes.

As always, the devil is in the details.

Without studying it too closely, I would think a national sales tax would be more fair, because rich people overall would pay more because they buy more. It takes a lot of money to furnish those huge mansions versus the tiny hovel that I have. And I assume caviar cost more than generic brand fish sticks. The cost of a meal at a fancy New York restaurant cost more than buying the basics at Aldi and cooking yourself.

It would depend how it is set up. I don’t know if any states now have a sales tax on grocery food or not, but I would think that should be exempt. However, I think most states tax restaurant food, which makes sense, since you don’t have to go out to eat. Minnesota doesn’t tax clothing, however it does tax sports, recreational and protective wear. Wisconsin however does charge sales tax on clothing. Like any other law that goes through Washington DC, I’m sure if a national sales tax was put into place, it would be a lot of mud slinging and there would be a bunch of weird exemptions attached such as people that live within 5 miles of the Wabash River would be exempt from paying sales tax on bee honey that was grown in hives that are produced by ABC Company since the CEO of ABC Company is a nephew of the senior Senator of Indiana.

If clothing and grocery store food was not taxable, that would limit part of the taxable spending on kids. Let the grandparents buy all the kid’s toys.

Bye week now is good for a number of reasons:

Jones injury a chance to heal – KOC after the game said he believed the injury was short-term.

Hock practice window is opened already – likely he returns 10/20 and is full speed ahead.

Everyone else who’s been dinged up (Addison, Darnold, Pace, Turner) now has time to completely heal without risking further injury in game action – Addison still looks like he’s favoring his ankle a bit, the time off will help that.

this is crazy:

Prior to the London game, Aaron Rodgers is just 1-47 in games where he trailed in the fourth quarter against winning teams. Now he is 1-48. There were some older stats out there from 2018 (he was 0-37 at that point), and from 2021 when he was 0-42. But adding his 2022 season (he missed last season), updated it to 1-47, now 1-48. A surprising blemish on Rodgers’ HoF resume.

Have returned from the great (well moderately good) waterfowl shoot of 2024. Final tally 94 ducks and only one goose, we just couldn’t pick the right fields for geese.

Watched from afar my 90 yo dad shoot and miss 3 times at a flock of ducks, moments later another flock came in and he didn’t shoot. When I walked over a while later and asked why he didn’t shoot he replied he didn’t know how to load his shotgun. He’s loaded that thing at least 5000 times literally. Sigh.

In my absence we almost blew it with FTP and I was convinced Rogers would score on the final drive yesterday. Thought Darnold looked Darnold esque yesterday.

Want our kicker to get a meaningless miss before the playoffs.

Was trying to leave Bottineau NoDak Friday morning at 5:30 am, however had a near flat, limped to the tire shop and waited in the parking lot until 8 guy got to it at 9. Have a spare but is only rated to 50 mph. Note to self, put a real tire on spare.

I’m sure they ended up in BozAngeles or Missoula. When the time comes, we’ll have the high ground in the mountains that surround em, we’ll take out their coffee shops from long range and they’ll be lost.

Doesn’t seem to be mounted on that windowsill, that would be an odd place for it.
Looks like it is just resting there for the photo but even that would help brace it for the first shot or two.

When I walked over a while later and asked why he didn’t shoot he replied he didn’t know how to load his shotgun. He’s loaded that thing at least 5000 times literally. Sigh.”

Hopefully the offensive weapons come week 7:

JJ
Addison
Nailor
Hock
Jones

That’s a good supporting cast.

The defenses we’ll be facing for the next five games (yds/game allowed):

DET (23rd)
LAR (29th)
IND (32nd)
JAX (31st)
TEN (1st)

I’m surprised Detroit is so low, I thought they had a pretty solid Defense.

depends on where you’re looking.

DVOA has Detroit defense ranked 15th
LAR 31
IND 21
JAC 32
TEN 9

(Minnesota has the #1 defense)

I listened to some of an Edelman podcast where he talked about playing with Vrabel. He said Bellicek would show the Patriots linebackers film of the Giants linebackers to show them how to play.

So one day Vrabel came out to the practice field in a Giants uniform and yelled to Bellicek, “You happy now!?”

That’s quality trolling.

I think these weird 2nd half offensive sleep fests are why KOC is a GOOD coach, but not Elite (YET). This isn’t a new thing and it has happened before.

He can get a little too cute sometimes. And i hope he learns from that.

I am VERY excited to be going into the bye 5-0 and SHOULD have a fully healthy team that includes HOCK….we have been desperately missing TE play and he will be a breath of fresh air for sure.

Things are looking up for the Vikings. the Lions will be a tough matchup, but the next few games after that seem to be the “soft” part of our schedule. this could be getting fun, guys

I think the second half vanishing offense yesterday was because Jones was hurt and without him there is no decent running game. Sam also threw a few bad passes and took two sacks vs throwing the ball away.

Coach could have made some different calls, but the guys downfield were open enough to take those chances imo. With a decent run game, the safeties would be up closer to the line. That went away as soon as Jones was out.

Future is bright for this team. No idea how far they will go this season, but this is an absolute blast compared to the last 6 years.

AMEN

also, the Jets have a very good defense.

I’m ready to start playing teams that don’t have stellar front lines and overall very good defenses…

Great start to the season, and now we have a bye to get rested up, and heal a little. KOC says he kept throwing the ball deep because they were playing tight coverage at the line, and he wanted to take advantage of it. Except we couldn’t. Which bugged me. Seeing Sam slinging the ball 40 yards downfield with no chance of completing it, over and over, just irritated me. We’ve clearly demonstrated over the first 4 weeks we can move the ball effectively, then KOC does that. Set Sam up to fail in my opinion.

yes, I agree. the lack of adjusting by KOC was surprising, and disturbing. With no running game, and a QB who was off, we needed to try something different. i only recall 2 screen passes by the Vikes. Darnold and Chandler had poor games. Ever JJ was les than his usual “stellar”. Let’s hope the Offense rebounds

I think the offense will be fine. KOC needs to pull his head out.though.

Did you want them to throw screens to the guy that couldn’t catch a toss?

Well, better to drop a forward pass than a lateral. Or we could Target a TE or WR. bottom line is let’s keep mixing it up!

Yeah, you got me there. At least it would just fall harmlessly to the ground. At least we’re squabbling about how they could win by more and not complaining about why they got blown out.

Jets defense had something to do with it. They play tight press coverage and it’s tough to get open on short routes. and, for the most part, Sam had good time to throw. They just didn’t hit on them.
Just happens sometimes. And our running game seemed to dry up.

Aaron Jones cannot get injured. He just cannot. Full stop. Not allowed.

Otherwise, I saw the last Jets drive. I figured there was about a 95 percent chance Rodgers would get the go-ahead TD, but it didn’t happen.

Offense needs to stop going to sleep in the second half. Beyond that…London games can take a long walk off a short pier. They are weird and should feel weird.

If Jones is out for a while, maybe it’s time to ride with McBride.

“The initial expectation is that Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hip) will be ready to return after the Week 6 bye,” Pro Football Talk posted on X on October 6. “Which is good, because the offense isn’t the same without him.”

Good game. Tough win….better than a tough loss.

I think the rain affected the passing game of both teams with a slick ball. Jets defense though is also very good, and every catch was contested.

Will Reichard is the man.

Hopefully Aaron Jones only has a hip pointer, and hopefully Sam’s ribs are ok. Good timing on the bye week there.

Been a fun, unexpected season already! Skol!

There were some issues that need to be fixed, and Aaron Jones is a beast the team needs. Huge drop off in the run game once he left.
Still, 5-0 feels damned good!
