My dad served during WWII. He was a pilot trainer stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He went on a blind date in April of ’45 and married her in October ’45. Good job mom and dad. One of my dad’s brothers served. If I remember correctly, at least one of my mom’s brother’s served. My son is currently active and is stationed at JBLM near Seattle/Tacoma.
Also my brother’s SIL is a drill sergeant at Fort Benning in Georgia.

I have since read about the horrors they went thru. I remember this one Vet talking about getting a Turkey leg at Thanksgiving, putting it in his pocket and nibbling/sucking on the frozen meat until they were finally back safe after New Years.
Thats right they were moving in frozen conditions for more than 6 weeks. At one point they were even declared ‘wiped out’ in the US media reports.

Just got back to work from attending my sons’ school Veterans Day celebration. Older boy is in JH band, they played the songs of each branch (veterans had to stand during their song), and my 1st grader (along with the rest of the elementary kids, dressed by class in red or white or blue shirts) sang us a cool song about how good they feel knowing we protect them, complete with arm movements and all that stuff that brings a glisten to the eyes.
I miss the school things. Our kids were in a lot (bands, sports, etc) so we always had something going on.
Sounds like a great time/thing for them to do.
You obviously don’t live in Calif/other Blue area.

We have places like that in Calif.
Actually 60-70% of Calif has great people, just have to avoid the rest (usually cities).

Oh well it is one of those stories where there’s a lot of buildup and different characters, basically Peewee gets crabs from the base sloot then gets sent for some duty with others in the company to far north…Peewee sits on Dopey’s bed wrapped up in his blanket while they play cards, more people join the game, blankets get tossed in footlockers, arctic suits donned and doffed, things get wet and it is freezing cold even inside so everyone huddles close around a naphtha heater, no one’s showering, people getting rank and a little itchy, then all of a sudden everyone starts finding crabs under their fingernails when they scratch their balls, mayhem and panic ensue, Peewee gets tossed out in the snow balls naked, etc…

My vocabulary was improved by my habit of reading a lot, and I always had the Webster pocket dictionary with me (5th grade teacher suggested that). Every time I saw a word I did not know, I looked it up and re read the sentence in the book

So I am getting a new car for the first time in quite a while, once the dealer allocation and order number etc get filled in 2028 by my reckoning.
Last two times we purchased a new vehicle the salesman encouraged us to finance a small part of the vehicle through dealer financing. Interest free loan and if you still hold it in 90 days the dealership and salesperson get a kickback of like $500. Works for me.
However, now I am hearing about forced dealer financing. They won’t sell you the car unless you finance some or all of the purchase through the dealer. This is legal BTW.
No more zero interest loans – that changes things up.
I see three ways to deal with this should it happen the day 960 days in the future when I pick up my Bronco:
What would you do?
Option 3. Dealer isn’t going to hold it against you in the future. And if they do, who cares? They want to sell cars.
There are other dealerships, and cars are interchangeable for the most part.
Very quickly – believe it is very much illegal to require you to take financing, And, even if a customer requires financing, they cannot make you take theirs.
When I bought my Altima (commuter car) I ‘financed it’, got the discount, paid off the purchase price when receiving the first statement ignoring all fees and interest. I got the title a few weeks later.
I never once worried about if the dealership would get their kickback.
Yeah I’m leaning #3. I doubt the local dealer that we ordered the Bronco from would pull that on me (we own three Ford pickups already) but best to be prepared. There is quite a little black market thriving on these hard to find models.
#4. Bring my wife. She is a shameless negotiator. I am actually embarrassed to be in the room with her when she does it. She is absolutely merciless and relentless.
My dad is like this. More than once I was left speechless as a kid watching him negotiate price on things, in particular cars/trucks. He’s gifted.
They are a different breed, for sure.
I watched him balk at signing a $199 document fee – looked the salesman in the eye and said ‘I’ve agreed to pay $26k for this pickup and I’m doing so right now, the only way I’m paying a ‘document’ fee is if you knock the price down to $25,801’ or I can walk across the street and find someone who wants to sell me a truck….’

I have learned that getting up to walk out is the best/final tactic.
It will often get you their best/final offer.
My niece is a 28yr old attorney and she helps her ‘friends’ buy cars.
She says that Salesmen see two 20something females and don’t take them seriously to the point that deals they agreed to over the internet will suddenly become ‘unavailable’.
She said my ‘walk away’ tactic’ almost always works and they few times it doesn’t they just go to another dealer.
To my grave I will feel bad about a deal I brokered entirely over the phone…
I wanted to trade my M3 for an LS460. The M3 is a sports car; not a touring car. The LS is a touring car. Called all the dealers within 1000 miles of Billings to see the availability of used LS’s. Had a great rapport with a salesman at the stealership out in the west ‘burbs of MSP.
Couple of months go by, no one has had one come in, the salesman from the ‘burb stayed in much closer contact than anyone else.
I spot one on the lot of the main downtown dealership in MSP that meets my specifications. I call and end up speaking to the main sales manager, I tell him I’ve actually been working a lot with the guy at your satellite lot, we do the deal. Next day the guy from the satellite calls all excited, guess what I think we have your car it is on the main lot. Told him the deal was done…kinda ruined his afternoon I’m sure losing the commish.
I have little respect for ‘car salesmen/persons’.
They do all they can to squeeze every dime from the buyer.
Had one tell me ‘So you are balking at getting an extra Nickel for your trade-in’. I guess $500 is a Nickel in their parlance.
I got my Nickel and never went back.
What would I do?
First off, I would not buy a Ford. However the new Bronco does look super cool
Secondly, I would pay cash, or finance through my credit union. It is absolutely against the law for them to force you to finance through Ford motor credit.
There are incentives that are only available IF you finance through ford (rebates, low APR or a combo), however you can usually do better on your own. usually, not always.
We got 0% on our Mazda and 1.9% on the shitty Kia. those were two cases where we were better off taking the Dealer financing vs our own.
So, order the truck you want, when it arrives, I would show up with a check, or take Option 3
Based on the articles I’ve read from frustrated consumers, auto dealers absolutely have the right to refuse outside financing. In addition, unless I misunderstand the meaning of a cash offer, they have the right to refuse a full cash/cheque offer, and some have indeed done so. Some have gotten greedy in the post supply chain issue landscape, undoubtedly have a buyer lined up willing to pay more or finance for the same vehicle.
I’m always willing to just pay cash.
I’m personally not willing to stumble through state law, but if there is a lawyer on here that can weigh in…I bet there is no law prohibiting dealerships from selling a car they own under their own terms, and the consumer can choose to meet those terms or walk.
Interesting. Times have changed. Google tells me you are correct, and dealerships can and do refuse cash offers or outside financing.
I know that service departments are the #1 source of dealership income, and finance / insurance is second.
I would for sure take option 3. Finance the shiny new truck and pay it off within 30 days.

Wife sent this to me this morning…. I missed it, but I guess Bears fans broke out a ‘PACKERS SUCK’ chant during the postgame last night. Twice.
If the Vikings beat the aints, and both Seahags and Cowpies lose, the Vikings will be the fifth seed. If one of those two lose, the Vikings become the sixth seed.
Unfortunately the Cowboys get to play the Giants. Now, the Seahawks seem to be rocking and we may game some ground there. Even sixth is good at this point.
LOTS of football left to be played. Not focused on what anyone else is doing – gotta keep stacking wins. Do that, and our playoff hopes lie in the outcome of the Detroit games at the end of the year. Division still up for grabs. Gotta beat N.O. this weekend. Tough task – good defense that leads the league in takeaways. Pretty sure we lead the league in giveaways. Must. Protect. The. Damn. Ball.

And the stupid thing was, we actually probably could have been great friends in high school because it turns out we had the same interest in movies and stuff.
But, anyway, I came across his Facebook and sent a friend request.
Better late than never, I guess. But, yeah, Facebook is a weird thing to offer closure on that sort of stuff. Like I still think about that guy to this day periodically, most notably is one day where he followed me through the whole length of the school and kept stepping on the back of my shoes with a stupid grin on his face and repeatedly asking, “What are you going to do about it?” like a giant hairy goon from the Popeye cartoon.
I think I could take him now. My how the turntables…

The truth is these negative thoughts – we all have them. Think how long you have dwelled on those? For me it was proudly wearing some new sweater with an Oilers logo on it and someone saying, “have you always been a (bundle of sticks)?” The crap we hold on to, that our brain thought stream plays back. I work on transferring that into positive thoughts, imagine that the guy that said that was insecure with his own life and just speaking out his own negative thoughts.
Yep, I remember them all, but I try rephrase them nowadays. I actually think a lot of those experiences turned into motivation to better myself in various ways.
Those were weird times for everyone. Another one burned into my brain was my first dance. I was nervous as heck, no idea what I was doing. Got on the dance floor for my first dance, and the first thing I see is a girl pointing at me, laughing and then imitating my awkward dancing to the delight of her friends.
Man, that gave me a dance complex forever.
Still, I think the worst was when I got my pants pulled down in front of everyone in gym class. That was over the line!
When I was in junior high I had a kid pull my gym shorts down in front of the whole class playing dodgeball. I was mortified. He got detention for a day. For weeks I walked around embarrassed and the butt of jokes – then it reached a boiling point and I dumped a full bowl of chili on his head in the middle of the lunchroom that turned into a messy, sloppy fistfight that resulted in 3 day in-school suspensions for both of us.
He was ‘best man’ at my wedding.
Another failure of the zero tolerance rule. Sometime you just need to beat the crap out of one another to get pass the garbage and realize you have a lot in common. Now you would have been suspended and your parents would have had to find you a new school.
Zero tolerance rules are stupid…If Kid A initiates a brawl by dumping Chili on Kid B, and Kid B gets up and punches him in the face..Both Kids get kicked out. So a kid cannot stand up for himiself.
If Kid A sees Kids B and C physically bullying Kid D, and Kid A intervenes physically on Kid Ds behalf, Kid A is going to get suspended for doing the right thing…It just ridiculous.
It has bred a generation of people that only see black and white. Gray doesn’t exist. Personally I feel that is what has led to the cancel culture.
I was one of the ‘poor kids’ at a prep school.
Tolerated but not really accepted.
What few friends i had when I went off to Play Army none stayed in contact.
I was even told by some princess there that ‘no one even wants you here’ when i showed up at her Birthday party. Invite was required by her parents to all classmates is seems.
When they invited me back for a reunion I declined stating ‘none of the cool kids even want me there so no loss’.
No regrets but lesson learned.

Took me a few years to figure out the American military holidays. Remembrance Day is really both Veteran’s and Memorial wrapped up into one in the Commonwealth.
Similar but different.
Most Veterans I know are not so comfortable with Veterans Day.
A local restaurant has ‘Vets Eat Free’ for 11/11. I wanted to support that so i went and ordered off the regular menu not that ‘special free meal menu’.
After we ate the Manager came to my table and told me that he ‘comp-ed’ my meal. I said ‘why, I don’t need the free meal, just wanted to support the event.’ He replied that he was a Vet and was proud to work for a place that would do that for Vets’.
I got them back by leaving a $40 tip as they pool their tips for all the waitstaff. That will learn them for messing with me. Ha!!

Im sitting in my chair watching Hulu, reading and doing internet things.
That is where I will be after the 5K. It shouldn’t be too strenuous, but it won’t have a lot of senior citizens either, so I won’t have anyone to pass to create the illusion of success. I’m going to be the rear guard, for sure.

First week of job training in Innsbruck done, glad I get to go home for the weekend in a half hour. Sucks that I have to travel back on Sunday, will miss the game again.

I think we stopped in Innsbruck once on a field trip, is Tratzberg Castle near there? I know the castle was on the Austrian side of the Tyrols.
If I’m remembering correctly there was some big open square with a commanding view of the mountains, then again I’m describing every town and city in Bavaria and Tyrol.
It indeed is, located in Jenbach which is like 36 kilometers from Innsbruck (as google just told me), so pretty likely you guys went through Innsbruck on that field trip.
It is a nice enough city, surrounded by mountains, but as I’m not fond of mountains (the flat Puszta being my natural habitat as a Hungarian), I’m glad to get back to Linz in a few minutes (train is full as hell as well).
Looking forward to visiting the Christkindlmarkt in Innsbruck next week though, I was told those are really beautiful there.
I had to laugh, my town is doing a Grinch theme for the “Light Parade” done the day after American Thanksgiving…the 24th of this month…for the hospital float a couple of people want to have a Krampus. Ho ho nothing like scaring the shit out of little kinder with a freaking German Goblin beats kids with a birch stick or hauls them off to eat them.

When we were in Germany we hit up a couple of Christmas Markets. They were cool. Good food too. Before you ask, one was in Landstuhl and I don’t remember the town name of the other one.
What was the name of the other one?

Christmas markets are a treat, not just the food (which indeed is very good), but also Punsch and mulled wine. We have some beautiful ones in Budapest as well, but Innsbruck looks to have some special ones too. Will be fun next week.
I did a couple of weeks of training while in the army in Oberammergau in that region.
Went back for the Passion Play a few years later.
Absolutely gorgeous area.
Indeed, really beautiful part of the country. Job training is pretty relaxed, so I get to enjoy this seriously nice part of Austria.
