Happy Thursday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

It’s my dad’s birthday today, he would be 101 years old if he were still here. He was a paratrooper, a veteran of WWII and Korea, and a great man. Happy birthday, dad!

I see Rick Spielman chimed in on the Vikings’ situation with Sam Darnold. He makes some valid points, but it’s still Rick Spielman. I do agree that it seems foolish to release a QB playing at Darnold’s current level when his replacement is a guy who hasn’t played a down of NFL regular season football, especially knowing the Vikings’ luck with drafting franchise QBs. Sitting & learning may be helpful for McCarthy like it was for Rodgers, Mahomes, etc. It’s something to Ponder.

Vikings News

Sam Darnold was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his masterpiece performance against the Falcons on Sunday, per Vikings.com.

Vikings.com has Vikings @ Bears week 15 preview, also listen to Kevin O’Connell’s Wednesday presser where he stresses that the team’s best football is yet to come.

Former Vikings GM Rick Spielman thinks the Vikings should re-sign Sam Darnold to a “bridge deal”, around 3 years/$100 million, from The Viking Age. I’d consider the argument if it wasn’t Rick making the argument.

NFL News

Bill Bilichick finalized a deal to become the new head coach of the University of North Carolina, from NFL.com. I kinda thought he’d go the college route, he’s already accomplished everything there is to accomplish in the NFL, and then some.

Also at NFL.com, facemask penalties could be subject to replay assistance in 2025. And Sam Darnold said “Hallelujah!”.

CBS Sports provides an update from the NFL owner’s meetings.

Browns owner, Jimmy Haslam, is non-committal on Deshaun Watson’s future with the Browns, per CBS Sports. The contract that he signed with Deshaun Watson is not non-commital, though. The Browns will pay him regardless of whether he plays for them or not. Dummies.

Media Selection

I found this one interesting, enjoy!

I’m gonna bring down the price of groceries very simply. He says.

Shortly later: ““Look, they got them up, I’d like to bring them down,” he said, “It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up. You know, it’s very hard.”

My response:
I mean the headline of the news article could have also been, “Donald Trump said, “I vehemently disagreed with, and I thought it was inappropriate” about Project 2025.” He said both things. Either one doesn’t tell the whole story of what he actually said and is misleading.

Careful anytime someone points out anything damning of Trump around here the folks go into, “oh yeah well the other guy did this.” Mode, instead of just being able to admit basic facts. It’s the same thing Biden supporters do… then both sides wonder why the other side can’t see the issues at hand and why nothing changes… look in the mirror.

You do not trade McCarthy, even if you decide to keep Darnold around for a year or two since there is a greater than zero chance he turns back into a pumpkin. Plus, even if they get to the SB, I don’t see where there is enough time to decide that Darnold is “elite”. He is a product of the system. I’d rather re-sign him and then trade him if KOC thinks JJ is better. Otherwise just play it out for a couple years and go from there.

If the team wins the SuperBowl, I would be more than a bit upset that my Daughters trip to vegas was cancelled due to the crowdstrike issue and I had given her $20 to put on the Vikings to win. I would have won thousands, on a twenty dollar bet.

Other than that, sure. Sign Sam, but I would keep JJ and eventually trade him or Sam if the value was there. Maybe JJ is better than Sam. Could be.

Speaking of investments, I chuckled at this little anecdote.

So imagine you have a son (or stepson in my case) whose best friend lives down the block, they’re always hanging out, you take them fishing or hiking or what not during their pre teen and teenage years. The best friend and stepson, through some quirk of fate, end up starting college the same time you go to gouger school. Best friend gets a bizness degree from Notre Dame, about the time you have the opportunity to make some side gouger bucks during gouger school decade he leaves a big Chi-town financial firm and does a startup on his own. Since you trust the kid, you and your wife decide to help him out by investing a bunch of side gouging cash in his investment firm. Since it is a limited partnership S-corps, you have to absorb the tax implications etc of dividends, stock sales, etc. (which sucks). Over the next twenty years, kid does really really well, like the ROI curve compared to the Russell index is like climbing Mt. Everest vs climbing North Dakota’s highest point.

He calls me yesterday, said he is going to distribute some earnings, about 16% to be exact, to each partner proportional to their investment to keep the fund manageable and “nimble”. My share is paltry compared to what he said he currently holds in assets under management. $265 M! WTF! If I had 265 M in people’s money under management I told him I would die of an ulcer within a week. I’d be constantly checking the market. So I guess I have no problem diagnosing widely metastatic cancer and talking to patients about it, but I would freaking die to be responsible for someone else’s money.

Step 1. Play and win the lottery.
Step 2. Buy the NFL.
Step 3. Sell the broadcast rights to whatever service comes in best at your house.

I’ve been pretty happy with Hulu. There is definitely a lag compared to the over the air broadcast though. I get texts from people about plays I haven’t even seen yet. I play through a Fire Stick and it seems a little ahead on my phone typically but still behind by about 10 seconds.

I was required to have a Landline for my work at the Prison.
Kept it afterwards as we would get a useful call once a month or so (usually from my Mom who only uses cell phones in emergencies).

Have not gotten a landline since the move, and have not missed it at all.

We have a land line as part of the Comcast package.
It’s more expensive to just have cable by itself so we go with the triple play. (Cable, Internet, Landline)

But we haven’t used a landline for at least 10 years.
We watch cable and see the “phone” is ringing on the TV screen.

I’m sure we have hundreds of messages about getting rich from Nigeria.

We still have a landline. I’m not sure why. It used to be because cell reception was poor at our house since we are in a valley just below a ridge. Now the only people that call the landline are spammers, my mother-in-law (she may fit in category one also) and my wife when she is calling me. I’m not sure why she doesn’t just call my cell phone.

Was listening to NFL radio driving home from work. The hosts of the show were discussing how many teams are selling part ownership approx 10% (with no voting rights to new owners). Some are buying to eventually be evaluated as future majority owners, others are buying just as an investment. The host said returns on investment 30% year in year out. They said Wall Street is starting to strategize to get involved.

Also, I worry about letting Sam walk. Say we have a heartbreaking loss in NFCCG and we all say “next year is our year”. I think a new qb decreases our odds of continued success, unless of course KOC can take anyone at the position and turn them into a Pro Bowler. Are we set for sustained success or is this year lightening in a bottle?

MT Viking
Reply to  SkolfromMT

Clearly in the current KOC defined offense we need two things – a future HOF WR that “changes the weather” for the opposing defense, and a RB that is durable, can block, can catch, and can run (ball control debatable). We lose either of those pieces and the offense turns into a clunker because of the offensive line weaknesses.

The Flores defense depends heavily on pressuring the QB and presnap shenanigans. If Flores leaves we won’t know until the new D coordinator gets a few games under his/her belt.

I’m starting to go over nightmare scenarios…IF GB wins @SEA, @MIN, vCHI…and we lose @SEA, vGB, @DET…we’ll finish with with identical records and they will get the top wild card spot given our losses to LA and SEA.

Seattle is looking like a huge game for seeding in the wild card standings. Their defense has been improving significantly and Geno is playing well enough to beat us.

Not to look past MNF. We struggle with mobile QBs.

My point is if we end up tied with GB at the end of the season at 12-5, that would mean GB beat Seattle and we did not. Common record LA and SEA losses would put GB ahead of us in WC standings I believe. Ergo we would play Detroit in the divisional round assuming we win WC round. I would prefer traveling to Philadelphia than Detroit.

Minnesota has not won in Seattle since 2006. GB has had their struggles, as well. If we both lose all will be well in the world.

Well, if someone wants to offer him a big starting QB contract then we can’t match that. I’m assuming he doesn’t even dress for a game the rest of the 2024 season.

I can see him replacing Rypien at some point this season/playoffs once he is familiar enough with the system.

I could see the Vikings tagging him for 2025.
Gives us a year to insure JJ is fully healthy and read in.
We could also trade him for picks once we figure he is excess to needs.

Not sure what the cost would be but we have a lot of cap space for ’25.
The Kumbya Club would want Sam on board for this I expect.

Not for $40 million+ plus on the exclusive tag.

Might be able to non exclusive tag for $30 million and see if Sam stays or goes on a better offer.

Given SkolfromMT’s scenario above where we lose the NFCCG in a heartbreaker, and the braintrust figures we are one year away and they are nervous about JJ, his knee, and his experience they may figure we have the cap space to absorb Sams hit for the higher tag.
