I hope everyone’s work week is going well. I’m getting a great deal of joy out of my transition back into self-employment, and I enjoy it more the longer I do it. The property management gig is taking off and becoming a better opportunity than we first realized. I’m getting more efficieint as I go, so I’ll have more time to do productive things, like hang out here. I have to finish the business plan for my sober living home loan, then that’ll be ready to take off, too. Exciting times.
Speaking of exciting times, I’m still very optimistic about this season. We only have one real game to look at, but from what we can tell so far, the defense is improved from last year (that’s not saying much). The Vikings have a metric a** load of talent on offense, with the offensive line being the perennial question mark. I still think the team will post between 10 & 12 wins this year.

You also have to remember I am posting coming from the camp where I believe Cousins cant win a NFCCG, let alone get to and win a bowl. So until he does that, he will never be enough in my eyes. And im man enough to admit that. So no im not going to shoot fireworks off every time he makes a good throw in a small time game.

Tonight’s game will be telling IMO. We should not have lost to Tampa at home. Period. The offense didn’t score enough, and I don’t know if it was poor planning, poor execution, poor play calling, or all three combined that caused it.
All I know is, if the offense can’t score points, this team is in deep trouble. KOC better have some answers tonight. I know this is a tough defense, on a short week, and an away game. You had all off-season to get the offense ready, and you blew it last week completely.
If we can’t run the ball tonight, and can’t do more than throw TE screens that get blown up, it’s gonna be a long season.

Now, the Eagles present a different challenge – like or guards against Carter and Cox. This would be a big task even if we were hitting on all cylinders. Just saying, we may not completely put it together tonight, and still be OK in longer run.
The things is yes it’s a tough defense on a short week but DAMNIT, we should be looked at as an issue as an offense to play for as well. I hate that there isn’t that narrative.

Little factoid here for all… last week the two most blitzed QB’s in the league were Kirk Cousins… and Baker Mayfield. Cousins was blitzed 21 times and Mayfield was blitzed 19. Mayfield was sacked once and hit twice. Cousins was sacked twice and hit 9 times.

Exactly…call plays that the rules are in your favor, passing downfield with JJ and inexperienced corners you may get a catch / big play, a PI or worse case a incompletion. INT’s are not a killer if you throw deep enough it’s more or less a short punt.

I know its hard to be a bummer before game one but, you can look forward to football and the games and still view things realistically. Also I cant get excited until we have a new rookie QB. Because I know where our ceiling will always be at until then.

Here is a good summary of what happened on the Cousins strip sack turnover play that has been heavily debated here today. This is from Andrew Krammer at the Star Tribune.
AK: Nobody has publicly put the Antoine Winfield Jr. sack-fumble on right guard Ed Ingram, but Tampa’s pre-snap look clearly duped the Vikings’ protection plan. Winfield disguised his intentions and made it look like he was dropping into coverage before blitzing.
This could be on center Austin Schlottmann, who was replacing the injured Garrett Bradbury. Minnesota’s protection schemes aren’t a simple “slide left” or “slide right,” rather a “sort side” or a “man side,” as offensive coordinator Wes Phillips explained during training camp. When four linemen slide left, they’re sorting out who to block based on the pre-snap identification of rushers. Fullback C.J. Ham fills in the middle, and RBs are generally coached to pick up the blitzer closest to center/quarterback.
In the clip below, watch how the Bucs show five rushers to the “sort” or left side. Tampa Bay duped the Vikings because they drop the left tackle’s edge rusher into coverage and blitz Winfield from the right side. The Vikings think they’re sorting through the five rushers on the left, when they end up moving five blockers to pick up four rushers.
With all that said, the Vikings need Ingram and Schlottmann to be better on Thursday night in Philadelphia. On the opening third down, Ingram appeared to blow a twist pickup that surrendered immediate pressure. He had the “freak accident,” as he said, of punching the ball out of Cousins’ hands. Some of Ingram’s problems appear to be vision and communication, which in theory should be fixable. But those issues compound when facing a blitz-heavy team like the Buccaneers (and when on the road in a loud environment).
whoever wrote this is CLEARLY a kirk homer, as he obviously doesn’t know that EVERYTHING is kirks fault.
So at the end of the day…the oline blocked to the left, Bucs dropped the left end in to coverage and blitzed from the right. Ingram should have picked up the MLB, Ham should have waited a tick before blocking the middle and waited for a delayed blitz from the left. Cousins was right the oline fucked it up, center and RG blocked the same guy leaving the MLB a clear path to the QB and forced the FB to save the day thus leaving Cousins wide open to get blasted.
TL;DR version…..
The OL got beat on that play and Kirk failed to secure the ball when sacked.

It’s on Kirk. Vikes are in 6 man protection, Bucs sent 7. Who’s responsible for the 7th man? The QB.
I should elaborate, because the guy on Darrisaw comes off it is really a 6 man rush but at the time that the 7th guy triggers it appears 7 to the offense it’s not like the whole OL can trade, bounce whatever you want to call it at that point. It’s either on Kirk or the OC/WR for there not being any hot or escape route.
I literally posted a video yesterday were some WHO PLAYED IN THE NFL broke this sack down. And its on Kirk. All the linemen blocked left and matched up with their man. Ham blocked the DB coming up the middle WHICH he should do first, because they will get to the QB before the blitzing CB. The QBs job is to know that that CB is lined up with no help behind up (probably blitzing) and be prepared for him to blitz, and either throw the ball away, move out of the pocket, or throw to a hot route. There was no hot route (failed play design there, thats on KOC) but everything else after is ON KIRK

The problem is he thought (incorrectly) they were coming with a zero blitz and they brought Plus one. He assumed he had backside coverage from Ham but they brought two blitzers from that side instead of one.
A lot of teams and QB’s are going to have a problem on a blitz like that that is well executed. It also helps that QB reads from the play were away from the blitz.
Yeah I think it’s more of credit to the defense for right play, right time but at the end of the day what looked like 7 coming with 6 in protection, Kirk or play design are responsible for that perceived 7th guy.

That is a lot of it…Bowles watching a shit ton of tape and knows at that down and distance how the protection scheme will be executed and he took a gamble sending two blitzers and it paid off.
It was 6 on protection but Ingram and Schlott blocked the same guy, the LB came up the middle untouched. That is ultimately where the breakdown happened, Ingram should have peeled off watching that MLB who’s standing and delaying his blitz right in front of him and that allows Ham to hold and pick up any 7th blitzer. Kirk is tying to complete a pass so his eyes have to be downfield but the only fault I have on him is knowing how the defense was set if the safety comes off the right he could be in trouble.
They just beat us on that one plain and simple.
Bowles made a good call. But these calls can backfire.
If we had a play call where Kirks first read was to the right, JJ runs a hot route at the post and there’s no one there to stop him.
Justifies looking JJ’s way more often to catch an aggressive defense gambling. No instead Kirk is looking left at the Oliver 3 yrd dig route.
No, JJ would get too big of an ego. Need to make sure he remembers that he is nothing without Kirk.
Believe play call directs Kirk’s first read.
And, if I was dialing up plays, would have schemes where JJ is first read.
Ham picked up who he should have, the DB coming from the middle. They get to the QB quicker than CBs off the edge.
What should have happened was Ingram picks up the LB and ham picks up Winfield

Ummm I mentioned that Winfield presented a look that he was in coverage, not blitzing. Lifer said he was creeping up and Cousins should have hit a hot route.
This guy is wrong here though. The center indeed sets the protection as described, but there’s no way the center would adjust protection the way he describes. No center in the league is going to shift the protection to the right because the safety might blitz. That would leave the edge rusher with an open shot on the QB. No way a center could guess the edge rusher is going to drop into coverage and the safety rushes. It was a good defensive play by the Bucs.
KOC used the term “un-scouted” look. This is what he meant. There was no film history on this defensive rush pattern by the Bucs. Thus they did not have a plan for it. In the first few games of the season, teams can employ this tactic. Once it’s on film though, teams have it in their game plan.
My guess here is, the Bucs prepared for the Vikings watching last years offensive play calling and recognized an opportunity with this particular formation. When the Vikings lined up, Winfield took his position and executed on the snap.
Legit do believe that the defense has the speed to keep up with the Eagles, and I’m not overly worried about the WR’s tbh. Big issue will be D line manning up and not getting owned, pushed back into the LB’s. Going to be tough in LB’s get pushed out of the play and we rely on DB’s to tackle hurts.

Something is not adding up here. So if the Oline played protection fairly well as this indicates then either the play calling wasn’t good OR the QB did not execute. Not talking about why we won or lost…that was simply because of turnovers we know that but this points to the pass protection being acceptable.

Better than just one site’s opinions but my take away is offensive line protection across the board is bad or below average in the NFL and that aligns with not being able to find and field good Olinemen anymore.

Headed to Chicago this weekend with a buddy for Riotfest on Saturday. Bands I am hoping to see Sleep Token, Pennywise (they play the same time as Sleep Token ugh!), Queens of the Stone Age, ICP (I loved ICP in middle school haha), Bowling For Soup (they play early, might not make the 8-9 hour drive in time lol). The bands I found from just seeing the bands there that I hadn’t heard before that have been a fun listen are Frank Turner, PUP, and Rival Schools.
Sunday is Danzig and Behemoth!!!!! I get to go backstage after the show and get drunk on scotch with Behemoth’s drummer. We always get together when they tour the US and hang and share scotch. I’ve had a 30 year Bowmore saved for like 3.5 years because he told me about how 80s Bowmore is so different from other Bowmores. This one is from Single Cask Nation. I am ready to be a fan of a team that is lead by a QB who gives your team a chance every week.
