The Vikings added an old friend to the roster, as they signed free agent LB Anthony Barr, according to twincities.com. Hey, if it gives us an upgrade at the position, I’m all for it. MSN reported that the Eagles were also interested in Barr. Barr hasn’t played for anyone in 2023, so I’m not sure how long it will take for him to get into football shape. Hopefully he hasn’t gotten too lazy.
The Vikings likely added Barr because Jordan Hicks underwent surgery after developing compartment syndrome in his right leg, according to ESPN.
From Yahoo Sports, Commanders QB Sam Howell is currently leading the NFL in passing yards and completions. Yes, you read that right.
From CBS Sports, the Giants are challenging the Bears for the first overall pick in 2024.
The game hasn’t even started yet, and I’m almost ready for bed. Yikes. Here’s a link to the stats and highlights from the game. I’m gonna guess the Bills win by 17, I’ll go with 30-13 Bills.

Not really. He signed a $13MM one-year deal. The 2023 base salary of $1.5MM is fully guaranteed along with his $8.5MM signing bonus which prorates across 2023 plus 4 void years. I don’t know how his $1MM workout bonus is structured but I’m assuming most if not all of that has already paid out. So, that just leaves his $2MM roster bonus, which I’m assuming they’ll get some of that back (I’m not sure how they define roster…whether it’s the active roster or the 53-man roster…either way I’m assuming his time on IR won’t count).
The $2m is a per game active bonus, so for every game he is inactive they get $117,647 in cap space next year.
Inactive doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not on the roster. He was on the roster early in the season, even though he wasn’t activated until week 3, IIRC. Once he was placed on IR, then I’m assuming he won’t get paid the per game roster bonus. So, yes, they’ll get something back but in the context of a $13MM contract, it’s peanuts.

My first comment was mostly sarcasm, but my point now is that at least they are getting something back and not just losing all 13 mill.
I agree something is better than nothing. I’m just saying that in the context of his full contract value, it’s not much. He’s been active 4 games already this season so nearly $0.5MM of the $2MM roster bonus is spent already. Bottom line, you’re technically correct…we’ll get something back…but I’m more frustrated by how much we spent for how little it looks like we’ll get.

Also, his cap hit is going from 18 to 47 million (2024) and 56 million (2025). So it’ll be hard to bring in fresh talent next year.

So they’re going from Dorsey to Joe Brady at OC, who was highly sought after back in 2019 when he was the OC of an historic LSU offense on a team that won the NC. He was 30 y/o and that season at LSU was his only experience as an OC. I’m not sure how much was him vs how much was having a top 5 NFL QB and two top 5 WRs on the team though. He was then hired as OC in Carolina but lasted a little under 2 seasons with an offense that was bottom 3rd in the league, though he didn’t have much to work with, CMC was injured most of that time and his QBs were Teddy and Darnold, they didn’t have much in the way of explosive skill position players either. It’ll be interesting to see how things go.
50/50 they implode and miss the playoffs IMO.

Yeah his cap hit is big next year, they do have flexibility in it though to adjust as needed, its not like those short term fully gtd contracts. It looks to me like since Daboll left he’s less and less confident in what he’s doing and seems unsure often from what I’ve seen. I don’t buy the self destruct at critical moments, against the Chefs in the playoffs he drove the team 75 yards for a game winning TD in less than 1 minute, only to see some horrible defensive playcalls allow the Chefs to go like 50 yards in 10 seconds to force OT and then easily score a TD in OT to win. It looks more to me like he isn’t recognizing things and is losing confidence.
And quite a few analysts say that Chief’s game was his high water mark, and it’s been down hill ever since. True – I don’t know.
Yeah, after that game Daboll got hired by the Giants and while still putting up similar stats and the team still winning, at least last year, he just hasn’t seemed the same.

I wasn’t sure what to think of Hurts other than he would not be successful in a traditional offense and would need it tailored to him, that Philly asshat coach seems pretty good at that.
Interesting to see how long he lasts taking on NFL LB’s.
He has a good physical build, but then again so did Cam Newton who he reminds me of. Once Cam stated breaking down with injuries and had to play a more traditional QB role he was pretty mediocre.
I just liked that the guy was extremely tough, strong (squatting 600+ pounds in college) and could elude pressure that could extend plays. Plus, he had the arm strength for deep shots (not great deep accuracy) and pretty decent short and intermediate accuracy.
I was quite excited to pair him with the correct coach and see what we could get.
My master plan was to fire Zimmer and hire Greg Roman to develop hurts.
That may not have been a terrible plan, wonder what Roman is doing these days.

But if history says anything, he may turn out just fine or be not so good. Only playing time will tell.
You can learn a lot about a QB even against scrubs.
He has top level ball placement and can hit a receiver in stride as good as any NFL starter. That sideline throw to Mattison was perfect. Many NFL QBs will loft that a little which gives the WR a shot to adjust to an off target ball. But that fraction of a second loft let’s a safety close. Overall arm strength might be an issue, but he really can deliver an accurate ball.
Pocket awareness and poise were decent.
It wasn’t mistake free, but there’s some real potential.
The safe bet is just to say they won’t make it. In the last decade over 10 QBs get drafted each year.
Most outside of the first rounders never play a snap.

Yeah, I think PFF sucks even when it fits my narrative, but we saw vigil for almost an entire season a couple years ago and he was just awful. The backups are either really inexperienced, not good at the game of football, or both.
Vigil is a classic guy that’s not good enough to start but seems to get special teams reps and sticks around as a backup.

Hopefully Barr will show enough to supplant him at the ILB4, or the ILB3 if Assmore is even worse.

this actually brings up a re-occuring bad dream i have from time to time….
about to graduate college only to remember i had ONE class i forgot about and never went to and i have to take all the tests in one day and pass in order to graduate.
I’ll knock two of them out tonight, 3 credits, each. Done.
I have a very similar dream. I am at college, and the semester is about to end, and I realize that I had multiple classes that I skipped so much, I forgot all about them. Then I try to remember what they were and where they were.
The other reoccurring dream I used to have was that something terrible was coming to get me, and I ran to a gun cabinet, got out a gun, and then I couldn’t get it loaded. Have not had that one in a long time.
I have these dreams as well about missing classes/tests at college.
The other one I have is I am back at college playing football and I am late to the locker room and can’t get my locker open and I miss the entire first half of the game so the coach benches me for the 2nd half…sucks.
i also have similar! get to the baseball field and forgot my glove or cleats and have to miss the game, or can’t play until i find replacements etc…

My brother was in Iraq, he was leading a 20 vehicle convoy out of the gate when he realized he had forgotten to take his weapon along, so all 20 vehicles had to turn around and follow him back to his tent so could get it…the general in the rear vehicle was not amused.
I may have told that story before.
What an idiot. Although once when I was in we were doing a community project building a road in the middle of summer, it was very hot and the road grader didn’t have a/c so the soldier operating it had the door secured open to get some air moving through the cab. Anyway, after a long day he realized at quitting time his weapon was no longer in the cab and we had to dig up miles of freshly graded dirt until sunset and all day the next day to find it, which we never did. I kind of hate him for that.

Have a similar dream on occasion, walk into class, there is a test I need to pass to graduate, and I didn’t know about the test let alone study for it. Last had it about a year ago. I love waking from that dream.

PFF is bullshit. Also, the grading scale for the NFL is below, with average starter being in the 60-70 range (yellow) so basically you’re saying that every season of his career he has been at least average until this season.

He’s been getting about 14 snaps per game in the last 5 games, which is about 25% of the D snaps. He’s moving up in the world. Which is nice to see.

Mahomes hasn’t really been tearing it up lately. His two weeks before the bye were anemic. He’s really only had a couple superlative scoring weeks this season.

I would probably start Mahomes based on matchups, Denver’s defense is terrible against the run but pretty good against the pass and have done quite well containing running QBs like Allen and Fields, this would seem a good time for the Vikings to rush the shit out of the ball. Philly is giving up an historically low ypg against the rush but they’re pretty bad in the passing game so I’d expect Mahomes to throw quite a bit.

I’m in the same boat. I was starting Cousins over Mahomes until the injury, then I picked up Dobbs. I’m starting him this weekend over Mahomes.
Denver may throw a wrench in passing yards, but Dobbs should add quite a bunch of yards on the ground as the pocket collapses.
I lost one big game because of Mahomes. He only netted like 7.40 points against Denver, which is interesting since that who is the Vikings play next. Dobbs will hopefully beat that. Mahomes was sick, though, I believe.

Playing a mile above sea level does make things a little more difficult for the road team. They are statistically the worst defense in the NFL, but I saw a stat that since giving up 70 points to Miami their defense is giving up an average of like 20 ppg. That game may not be the cakewalk the homers assume it to be. Their offense is still pretty meh though.
Defense has improved dramatically the last few weeks.
It will be a difficult game. I have faith that it will at least be entertaining.

Watching the game last night, their offense is horrible. As long as the Vikings don’t turn the ball over, they should win. The game last night was a clown show contest to see who could lose. It seemed like neither team wanted to win.

It was painful. Buffalo would have a good play, then say nah, Denver you have the ball. Denver takes it and their offense goes, no we really don’t want to score either. The shit show field goal to end the game was a microcosm of the entire game. Oh, I also heard that the 12th man on the missed FG was Hamlin and saw a pretty distasteful meme about it. Not a great showing for finally making it on the field this year if true.
