I would argue the “second contract” criteria does not equate to being good or a “hit”. I think there are plenty of teams that hold hope too long or keep an average QB because they’re a 1st rounder. So it’s probably like 25% at best IMO.

JJ at 11, Sweat at 23. Penix will be end of the first with a trade up or 2nd round and Nix won’t go until at least the 3rd, more likely the 4th or later. The trade up for QBs is always overblown. Couple off the top of my head: Teddy, Carr, Mac, Mettenberger, Levis, Hooker.

i have this crazy story….
so this morning, i woke up, showered, went downstairs, had coffee, did some devotions with my wife, my youngest came down and looked at his picture bible, went and took my vitamins, said by the the family that was awake, headed to the gas station. filled up. grabbed a breakfast sammy. started on my normal way to work, road construction pushed me onto the main freeways which i hated. jamming to music. wishing people knew how to drive. got to work. parked. unlocked the front door. went out back to the shop, unlocked that door, turned the lights on, to get the mechanics ready for their day.
went and sat down. got situated at my desk. turned my computer on. got caught up on my emails. checked the systems. quoted a few caterpillar parts. logged into skol. 12 comments so far. perused. notice that jacksonvike wished me a happy birthday. smiled. thought that was kind of him. decided i better make it very obvious to everyone on skoloholics that it’s my bday as i like to make everything about me. knowing everyone loves my charm, witt, and sparkling personality, they didn’t disappoint by serenading me with happy birthdays, fun gifs, etc. i decide i should use my birthday powers to try to bring peace to the blog. but alas nothing works. disunity, anger, and madness ensues. everyone freaks out on everyone. pansies are being tossed around like sand on the seashore when Top Gun 2: Maverick has a weird random football on the beach scene.

I would agree with this to an extent. But I also think he has a point – where is the breakeven for the cost of one man on the team, where he is overpaid? Like most people can agree KC was/is a very good QB, but maybe didn’t justify his contract price. Where is that line for a WR (or JJ specifically)?
JJ is the best player at his position in the league and according to the players themselves, the best player in the league at all positions in 2022. Plus he hasn’t turned into a diva, spends time in the community and is seemingly a good dude. Pay the man.
$50 million a year? Again, where’s the line? I’m not saying he’s not worth a lot, but diminishing returns and hamstringing other positions of need, like the argument against someone else who plays QB. Don’t get me wrong – I want him on the team. Just might be problematic at too high of a price, particularly if injuries start piling up, which is a risk with any player.
Id guess JJ’s deal surpasses the latest one by a wide margin. To me that’s like $2 million plus per year.

It wouldn’t surprise me if JJ’s deal gets announced tomorrow before the draft – but I also believe that Minny is absolutely fielding calls regarding JJ’s availability via trade. I don’t think they’ll trade him – deep WR class this year kind of drives his price down a bit regarding draft pick compensation, but it’d be foolish for them to not at least listen to offers up until draft day.

AJ Brown’s deal with Philadelphia was announced the same night he was traded. Presumably the sides had been talking for a while and a deal got done on draft night.
I could see a scenario where Minny fields calls regarding JJ’s availability up to a certain point – say 4 pm on draft day – while also having an offer they think will be accepted by JJ ready to be signed, and announced, shortly thereafter.
Framework and talks of these deals can and do go on for months but as NVF has pointed out the actual presentation of the offer and signing of the deal can happen in mere minutes. Especially if the framework is already in place.
I could see a scenario where JJ’s deal (if there is one) gets announced within a few minutes of the Vikings drafting a QB, assuming they do. I’m not saying his deal is contingent upon them drafting a QB. I just think all signs point to them doing so at 11 or 23 and once that’s done I don’t think it’s a stretch to envision some television pundit saying something to the effect of:
‘Vikings newly drafted QB will have the best in the business to throw to as Justin Jefferson has agreed to a 4 year, 79 bajillion dollar deal…’
I also think announcing the deal on draft day in that scenario (post drafted QBOTF) would go a long way to appease JJ. He’s the best in the game, wants to be paid like it – and also wants the recognition that he’s paid like it. He wants the title of highest paid WR and a public spectacle and all of social media reacting to ‘that man gettin that bag’ is good way to go about it.

That year the top six QBs went in this order.
John Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O’Brien, and Dan Marino
Hope we draft smart with some common sense, which would be nice.
Two sucked, one was ok for a while, the rest are HOF, pretty good draft class.

I certainly read about it after the fact but there wasn’t the pre-draft build up like there is now.
I do remember that we got Joey Browner CB, in the first round that year, so pretty decent.

O’Brien and Eason both looked early in their careers like they would develop into good starting QBs, but for various reasons including poor coaching, injuries, etc. both regressed after around their 4th seasons
O’Brien did make a few pro bowls and had one legendary shootout with Dan Marino.
Eason started the aforementioned 85 Super Bowl – and was murdered.
So I guess they both were noteworthy in that regard.
Nothing compared to Elway (who still has the strongest arm that I have ever seen.
Or Marino (maybe the best pure passer in history)
Or Kelly – just a gunslinger and probably the 2nd greatest QB to never win a SB (behind Marino)
All 1st Rounders by the way.

All of the aforementioned QBs – but also HoFer’s in Darrell Green, Richard Dent, Eric Dickerson, Bruce Mathews, Jim Covert…

Williams won’t bust, he’s talented enough that even if he doesn’t live up to all the hype he’ll still be a good player. Daniels, who knows, one year wonder in his 6th season of playing and either sucked or was meh before that.
Regarding the Maye vs. McCarthy discussion, reports are that KOC LOVES Maye and that McCarthy they love at the right draft spot. Personally I want both.

I think so too. I think they might have tentative deals in place while potentially engaging in a disinformation campaign but ultimately they’ll see what falls on draft night. KAM has got to be aware of public perception of his horse trading abilities or lack thereof (not that awareness inspires change) and understands the opportunity in front of him and KOC to get this right. I think if he trades up it’ll be reasonable. I think there’s a 50/50 chance they just stay put.
Or he’ll pass over a high-quality player to trade with Detroit and get negative value. We’ll see – I’m certainly skeptical of him and the job he’s done.
I think passing on someone and trading back is a possibility, I don’t he suddenly changes his striped and gives in to another teams trade demands for a QB, he didn’t with Kirk so I don’t see him doing it in the draft.

I’ll ask again about Penix… is his evaluation lower only because of his injury history? I keep hearing about that but then I realized the last time he was injured was 3 years ago and played great and wasn’t injured the last 2 years so I don’t get the BIG worry.

However, Michigan then steamrolled Washington in the national championship, pushing Penix to a second-round consolation prize overnight. Now, he has started to climb back to that original assessment with reports that coaches are higher on him than scouts, as he is ranked as high as No. 2 by some.

Just my opinion, but to me McCarthy processes far better than Maye. Maye is a great big guy with a strong arm. Reminds me a lot of Cam Newton. Grew up always being the biggest guy on the field. Great athlete, may not be a great NFL QB, long term.

I saw an incredible summary yesterday of McCarthy’s “career” as a starting QB from high school through college. He was redshirted in both freshman seasons of HS varsity and at Michigan. In the 3 seasons he started in HS and 2 seasons in college, his overall record is 61-3.
He played in two-straight state championships in high school, winning 1 of them, transferred to IMG his senior year, won a national championship and then won a national championship in his 2nd year at Michigan. His worst season record over his 5 season span as a starting QB is 12-1, his sophomore year (and his first year as the starting QB) at Michigan.
His evaluations may be getting dinged because of limited stats but man, the dude is a winner.

Don’t know if its smoke or not but I think JJ has that killer instinct, similar to Jordan or Brady. I like that in a QB. Large QB’s are fun also Big Ben was tough to bring down. I am a medium rare guy with beef, rare with deer and elk which I eat much much more than beef. Bear is always well done or brined and smoked. Bears are not uncommonly infected with trichinella.

I’ve been on the McCarthy bandwagon since last year. I like his intangibles. I think the kid is a leader and will succeed at the next level.
Maye has all the physical skills. Gifted with size and athletic ability and a cannon arm. But I’m snake bit on QB’s from North Carolina because of Trubisky, which may be folly considering how CJ Stroud seems to have shattered the idea that ‘Ohio State QB’s don’t succeed in the NFL’ – maybe the same can be said about Maye.

The more I see of ‘Bubble-Screen Bo’ the more I like. Not the strongest arm in the class but he’s a good athlete, lots of experience, and seems to have the ‘between the ears’ trait that is so important.
RE: Trubinsky, have a BIL who is a yuuge bears fan. Occasionally I’ll ask him to remind me who the bears passed at QB in order to draft him. He usually doesn’t answer, just stares into space. Also he’s convinced Williams will be a bust. He is a bit gun-shy.
My buddy is also a huge Bears fan – he’ll be watching the draft over here on Thursday night. I also troll him about Chicago TRADING UP to take Trubisky when either Mahomes or Watson were there.
McCarthy may very well be better, but I have a hard time rooting for anyone from Michigan due to the fact that everyone I’ve ever met that has gone to that school is a conceited tool. And I’ve met dozens.

I think he did fairly well in FA with the cap space available. First draft was terrible, last draft looks decent, hopefully this one is good, but really it’ll come down to the QB they likely draft.

QOTD: Steak only has 2 ways to be cooked that are any good. Rare and chef’s suggestion. I’ve been to places where the Chef suggests medium rare, and when that happens I take their word for it, though I think that suggestion is usually to entice the numb nuts dumb dumbs who like it more done. I will say though my ex-wife’s grandpa who was the nicest, best shining example of a wonderful man… he liked his steak well done with ketchup… his only damning quality.
As far as the draft, is the only reason Penix isn’t a top 5 draft pick QB because of his injury history…? Wasn’t his last injury 3 years ago and has played pretty damn good the last 2 years without issues?
Penix has some issues with mid range passes, and with the NFL offense needing 5-15 yard outs and crossing routes, that is a big deal.
If Coach thinks he can fix that, I would be on board. Guy has a fantastic deep ball, and him throwing to JJ for years could be a lot of fun.
KOC talked about QB draft options with fixable issues vs those with unfixable ones.
